Posssible to redirect the content of SCREEN during init/userspace?

I went to IRC the other day and asked where the userspace errors are usually located, a lot of users pointed me in the /var/log direction. But I can't for the life of me find anything that's related to userspace, only kernel errors.
Example: (sorted by now) netcfg complains during init theres a profile error bla bla, naturally I try to grep "Profile x error" in every log from /var/log but the result gives me nothing.
Where do we locate standard userspace errors? if there's no way other than using scroll lock, can't we take the output and direct it to a log instead?
Thank You

I think it's the matter of each "userspace" program to allow and arrange for logging of its output, via the config file and/or by command line switches, or automatically. If you need to capture output of a particular program/daemon run during the startup, you can always restart it (sudo /etc/rc.d/<daemon_name> restart) to get its output again, or better, take a look at how is the program actually run by looking at the script /etc/rc.d/<daemon_name> and try to run it from command line manually (especially if it doesn't allow reasonably logging its output).
sorry for the delay guys, I guess you have to manually subscribe to each thread in order to recieve an update.
bender02 hmm I see, I guess that makes sence but still it's gonna be a whole mess going through the entire daemon path just to see which one is causing the errors, and those are just daemons, what about standard errors in userspace? Your idea is sound though, now I only need to find out exactly what process/daemon is causing my mess and write the output > file. Thanks dude!
@sjovan problem resolved, but most of the errors I get in userspace isn't visible with "dmesg" thanks anyways!

    Welcome to the Discussions!
The first thing to do would be to boot from your original Disk 1 by:
    1. Inserting the disc, pressing the power button, and immediately after the startup chime, press and hold the C key until you see the spinning gear icon appear on the grey splash screen.
    2. After the machine has booted, pick your language, and when the Installer window appears, do not press Continue, but go to the Utilities menu in the menubar and open Disk Utility.
    3. In Disk Utility, choose your normal startup volume in the pane on the left and then click Repair Disk. If any errors show in the window, run Repair Disk again until you see 'The volume appears to be OK' in green.
    4. Quit Disk Utility, quit the installer and attempt to restart into your regular startup volume.
Please update your profile so we have a clearer picture of your particular machine.

  • How can I get the info off the top of screen during slideshow playback on 7d

Subject says it all.  I have a 7d and want to play slideshow through the camera up on screens without the info across the top.  No the info buttin does not help.  My older rebel does this no problem.  YES I can shoot on 7d but playback through rebel but thats dumb.  Help please.

I have had the same problem. I solved it by disconnecting the the cable and then using the info button to clear the info from the rear screen. When I re-conneccted, the TV screen was clear during slideshow.
There might be an easier way, but I haven't found it.

  • The big black screen during install...

I've just installed Lion, after downloading it today to do an upgrade from Snow Leopard on my 3 1/2 yr old MBP.  When I got to the point of agreeing to the
license, the large "X" appeared on the screen and said that it would take 33 minutes to install. I turned away to do other things. About 20 minutes later the screen was black and there was no obvious sign of life. I wasn't sure what to do. I waited a while longer and still no change.  I was very concerned that the install had failed. After awhile it was suggested to me that I try touching the right or left arrow key to see if the screen would awaken. Yes, it did awaken, and the install was continuing. Eventually it did complete (albeit longer than the stated 33 minutes), did a reboot, and all appears to be well.
My point in writing this is to let others know that this is normal and not to be concerned. I did try to find out here in the forums what normal behavior during the upgrade was, but I couldn't. It would be so helpful if Apple explained what the typical install is like!

  • Finder window shifts content off screen to the left.

This is posted in the Finder discussion also. I post it here also in the chance this is a Retina display issue. I never experienced this problem with Lion on my old MacBook Pro, just on my new Retina display.
On several occasions the window in my Finder shifts the contents off screen to the left. For example, in column view, the left most edge of the Finder window might be displaying files listed in column 2 or 3. And even that is only the rightmost sliver of that column, showing maybe the last 6 to 10 characters of the file/fold names. There is no horizontal scroll bar and there appears to be no way to force the leftmost content (which is off screen to the left) to come back onto the screen. This appears to happen randomly; at least I've not noticed a pattern. I'm usually in Column view. When this happens switch between view options provides no solution. Minimizing and resizing also have no affect. Scrolling does not work, nor does using the arrow keys. The only solution is to close the window and open a new one.
Anyone have this happen? Any ideas as to cause or cure?
Closing the window and opening a new one is not a "major" crisis, but the fact such a bug is running around is undermining my confidence in the system.
    Thanks for your help.

Please post a screen shot of what you are seeing. If you mean to the left of the Finder Window, it goes under the Sidebar area this is normal if your focus is in the Next to right most column. Like this?
That is completely normal. The left hand side has to go somewhere when the focus in more to the right.
Although myh scroll bar does allow me to go back to the left.

My Mid 2011 MacBook Air (shipped with Lion) has been having this exact problem for some time now.
It started being really annoying when I placed the Dock to the right part of the screen. 'Drag and Drop' anything to the Dock would almost always reproduce the problem to all Finder windows.
The only solution I found was to force close the Finder. And, of course, moving the Dock back to the bottom part. It still happened, just less often.
This issue is still happening after upgrading to Mountain Lion. But now it happens to a single window and I can solve it simply closing it.
It is not something to drive me mad either, but I am surprised there are so few people discussing this bug. I would love to know if there is already a solution.
    Thanks.

  • Editing contents of screen font suitcases in OSX

I've received a number of fonts from clients in which the suitcase containing the screen fonts contains numerous additional screen fonts which I would like to remove.
For example, suppose a client has supplied a new font called "Obscurefont" which I need. The printer font for "Obscurefont" has been supplied as a separate file, as well as a screen font suitcase called "Bunchafonts". This screen font suitcase contains the needed screen font for "Obscurefont," but it also contains numerous other screen fonts for Helvetica, Times, etc. which are not necessary, and which often create font conflicts.
To fix this problem back in the old days, I would boot up my old G3 in OS9, double-click on the screen font suitcase, and drag out the offending extra screen fonts into the trash.
Is there any way, short of dusting off an old machine capable of booting in OS9, of editing the contents of a screen font suitcase?

I checked out a discussion on the OSX 10.4 forum which solved my problem, and made me feel a wee bit nostalgic... Turns out that the old "Font/DA Mover" app from years ago (System 6?) still runs in Classic mode, and it can still edit the contents of screen font suitcases. Painfully slow, but it works.

  • Toshiba M305D : blue windows screen during the install of Windows 7 / Vista, no Audio on Windows XP

    Dear Users
Last week I had a clean install of Windows 7 64bit on my M305D-S4830 laptop.
I've used this OS on this machine before, and it worked fine.
After installing Win7, the device manager showed 2 unknown devices. First I've installed the O2 multimedia card reader, and it went ok. Secondly I've installed for the unknown device "hdmi audio" a hdmi audio driver from ATi, since the notebook has AMD 780V chipset and a Radeon HD3100 (it hasn't any hdmi output, but I didn't want to have any unknown devices).
    And my nightmare begun.
While restarting after the driver upgrade, my brand new Win 7 boot hang on blue screen code: 0x00000124, which is common for many hardware and software faults. I ran safe mode to clean the system from the hdmi audio driver, but the catalyst install manager dind't let me to remove it. Since it was a fresh install on a formatted HDD, I took the time for another clean install (20 mins). But during the Win 7 install, the installer hang on blue screen, guess what, code: 0x00000124. I changed to the factory-backup Win Vista disks of my laptop, but Vista had the same problem, I couldn't install this OS either, blue screen during install, too.
I took a Win XP Prof SP3 as a last option, and I could finally install it. But after the install, I had problems with the Radeon HD3100, I couldn't install the driver from the .exe, I had to make it from the device manager via properties/I choose to/graphics adapters/own disk. So I don't have the control centre, but the display works in 1280x800.
The bigger problem is: no sound.
The device manager in Win XP shows only one unknown audio device: the hdmi audio. I can't install the conexant drivers, because it says I don't have the device for that. When I install the ATi hdmi driver for XP, I get the blue screen with the error 0x00000124. Nice.
I have updated bios, and made a proper format with the partititons deleted, but it didn't helped. I think the Vista/7 install crashes at the point, when it tries to install the audio driver during OS install, because the XP was running until I have tried to install it, too. But I can't configure the Vista/7 install not to try loading it.
So my laptop is only comnpatible with XP, the install of Vista or 7 crashes. And in XP, I have got no audio devices, therefore no sound. You can imagine, how glad I am looking at my Harman/Kardon speakers right now...
    Any ideas?

Alex, restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. If you didn't burn them, order the discs.
       Order Toshiba Recovery Media
If it doesn't run properly after that, you have a hardware malfunction.

You could try a reset and see if that fixes it : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If it doesn't then you could try restoring to your last backup and/or resetting back to factory defaults. But if it's a hardware issue then you will need to contact Apple.

  • How do you run to Drives on the same screen. I installed a ssd and a hhd to my mac but i can only view the content of the drive only if i boot of that drive. Im try to have my ssd for fast boots and hhd for my music, movies etc. Please help.

I installed a samsung 840 pro SSD to my primary slot and relocated my 1.5 TB HDD to a data double where my optical drive was. I transfered my apps and Mac OS X to my SSD for fast boots and all my itunes movies, music, Iphoto etc to my HDD. I rebooted off my SSD then seen all the data on my HHD itunes movies, music, iphotos etc i cannot view on my SSD. So my question is how do you view all the content on both the ssd and hdd on the same screen with having to boot off one or the other?

No, what I'm saying is that once you boot into OSX, you should be able to see both drives listed.  If you don't then either OSX is hiding the other drive because it sees it as a boot drive and is trying to protect the contents from novice users or there's another problem.  If it's the first thing (i.e. it's a protection thing), then your only option would be to boot into the old drive, copy off all your personal data to an external backup drive, then reboot into the SSD and go into Disk Utilities and wipe/reformat the second drive so that you can see it as a regular secondary drive.  Then when you see it as that, you can copy your data back to it.
Be carefull poking around in Disk Utility as you can easily lose your data.  It's possible the Mac just isn't mounting that second drive because it sees it as another boot drive.  Whatever you do, don't accidentally erase it without getting a copy of your data off of it because you obviously don't have that on your SSD now.

  • How do I do a split screen to show the contents of my Library and a playlist at the same time?

I’m using iTunes 11.3.1 on a current generation Mac running OSX 10.9.4.
I like to manually create playlists.  I want to be able to see the contents of a playlist and my library at the same time. Is there a way to do a split screen view in iTunes so the songs in my playlist show in one window and the library shows in another?
