Post-Crash Login Dilemma

Hi there -
Here are my machine specs: MacBook Pro 17" 2.6 2GB RAM running 10.4.11
Here's my dilemma: I crashed working in Logic Pro 8 but was able to do a clean shutdown. Upon restarting my machine, this is what I encountered:
Machine boots to login window, but instead of list of users on machine (as was set in my System Preferences) I get a username/password entry and none of my accounts work including root (which was previously correctly configured in Net Info Mgr)
Here is what I have tried so far:
-- Repair disk permissions. For some reason I had to do this from a Leopard Install disk. When I tried to boot using the Tiger disk, I got the "top wipe" "Restart Your Computer" grey death screen each time. The first time I used the Leopard disk (an upgrade disk borrowed from one of my employees) it couldn't find a version of OS X. Second time it worked. Disk Utility fixed a lot of permissions but still not able to login. Strange thing is my first name appears in the login window, but my account (including the short name) is my full name.
-- Confirmed the disk is still intact in Target Mode. As far as I can tell, everything is in place.
-- Tried to delete /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist. Nothing doing.
-- Rebooted. Held down D for Hardware test. Passed with flying colors.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same thing happen to a number of new Aluminum iMacs in a lab, it was actually happening when the power was being turned off accidentally by the students. Fortunately it was a lab so we just re-imaged the computers and everything is back to normal. If I find anything more specific I will post. I sent a service request to Apple and they said they had never seen this issue. I looked in the discussions and didn't find anything previously so was surprised to find your post. I am surprised no one else has come across this issue.

  • FIREFOX 26 changed the 'post crash' page with the list of windows and pages. It was a real HTML page with links for each page. Now it isn't (and blows)

    * You changed the page that comes up after a crash - the one which shows the windows and pages that were up before the
    crash.
This used to be a real HTML page and it isn't any more. THis choice was pure isiocy consider how peopel used that page every day (try taking to your users for a change).
The pages listed on that 'post crash page' used to be actual LINKS (you could right click them &
manually open them in another tab - and most peope DID that every day). You could also (and I did this a lot) drag a second
copy of the page, into a new tab (to keep track of all the pages I had not wanted to open)
Now the pages are no longer links. You cannot right-click them.
The thing in the probser is no longer a page that I can drag into a new tab.
Roll the version back and throw this one in the bin...and have a good long talk with your developers about the definition of
    'STUPIDITIY'
Then I try to type anything in the addres bar it is suppose to repoond with the history of old things I have types in the past, or
search for what I type (and in some cases I think it tyes to convert it intoa URL). However it no longer does any of these
things. When I type in the ADDRESS BAR ONLY, I do not get all of my letters to appear. I have to type into a notepad or
into the search and to copy and paste to go to a URL. Nothing that is typed into the address bad responds normally at all
anymore, and I am fairly certain there are no new addons on this machine at all. It does not matter which things I disable. It
still does this. W of course points the finger back at a change to FIREFOX. I wich I could just sitct with one stable release
forever but the MOZILLA folk thing it is best to force peopel awy from a working broswer release to a horrible one (due to it
    being out of date).
FIREFOX 26.0 has 'issues' (ie new *features*/bugs)
    1) History is no longer accurate. My Proof? This machine is the primary one for the entire family (the only PC working). It is
logged in with same user every time and never has its history cleared. It now January 7 so I ought to have a list of all of last
    months browing available to me.
However, according to FIREFOX history, in all of December 2013, the entire family only went to 51 primary URL's. None of
the official TV sites I use to get episodes are listed. None of the official movie sites I use are listed. The primary URL for
ebay is not listed. Only 1 out of our 4 weather sites that I use (at least once a week) are listed. Only 1 of our 3 FINANCE
sites is listed. There ought to be several; hundred root URLs listed.
Please fix history as this change seriously "blows greasy chunks"
PROBLEM (a stupid change in the new FIREFOX version)
FOr a long time, after a crash you got a useful page (a real HTML page) which gave you a list of all of your last sessions
'winwos and tabs' that were open when the browser crashed. there were certain ways of using this page that are no longer
    able to be done.
The old method was wonderful as it had this behavior :
*** The old method for displaying your 'Recovered Tabs' allowed you to :
    a) right click an individual item and open it in a tab without getting rid of that lovely window of your previous session of
    'recovered windows and tabs '.
    2) drag the URL for the entire window of 'recovered windows and tabs ' to a new tab (to make a second copy) so that you
could select just a few of them to open as a group, and stil have the old list handy.
You can no longer do either of these things. The 'recovered windows and tabs ' page no longer has links in it and can no longer be dragged, so you cant select a few of them to use, and keep the rest around for later. NOW - once you choose which pages to open the window is gone forever (can can't get a second copy).
People used to make a copy of the page for later use (with a drag)
we also used to open pages with a right click (which no longer functions
This new method seriously blows big greasy chunks. A parge loss in function has occurred.
Put things back as they were. 26 is full of terrible changes that NOBODY likes. It also has a lot of bugs (history is not reliable at all)

    (1) Firefox's built-in post-crash page has not been a real HTML page for a long time (for example, from the time of Firefox 22, see: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/968212 Want to save LOTS of versions of "Restore Session.xht" from the "oops ..." page for later use]). If you had this working differently with Firefox 25, that might have been created by an extension.
You can check to see whether extensions are disabled or need an update on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. The disabled extensions cluster toward the bottom of the list. To poll for updates, use the "gear" button above the list and choose Check for Updates.
If you used the Reset feature (or Firefox automatically did a reset due to some problem during upgrading), you will need to reinstall missing extensions. The reset feature creates a folder on the desktop named Old Firefox Data. Do you have that folder? There may be data you can recover from it.
    (2) There are many ways for history to get cleared, both internal to Firefox and external. Could you double-check your Privacy settings?
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Privacy
    * The "Firefox will" drop-down says Remember History: Firefox shouldn't be clearing history, but an add-on or external software could do it
    * The "Firefox will" drop-down says Use custom settings for history: inspect the "Clear history when Firefox closes" setting to make Firefox isn't set to clear history. Also check your add-ons and consider external software.
Firefox normally accumulates months of history. However, some of Firefox's database sizes are based on disk space available. If your hard drive is very full, Firefox might reduce the amount of history stored.

I've been Googling for a few hours now and I've come across several forums that have similar topics. I recently bought 2 OWC SSD drives. You mentioned hibernate (wake machine from sleep screen is grey and there's a progress bar indication that OS X is loading your last session back into memory) I've experience the problem in both hibernate and wake from sleep.
When my machine goes to sleep and I wake it, I start using the machine maybe for about 30 seconds to a minute the whole machine then freezes sometimes with the exception of the cursor but the time is frozen and the blinking time separator : doesn't blink you can't click on any icons.
Only option is to hard reset. Sometimes the cursor is a spinning beach ball.
Some people have stated to turn off hibernate mode "sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0" I tried this about an hour ago haven't tested it yet by putting my MBP to sleep. But I'll post my results.

  • Posting crash report?

I wrote a nice question about a problem I'm having with Safari, which has decided that anything too challenging (or of interest to me) makes it "quit unexpectedly." As instructed in someone else's thread, I copied the latest crash report from the library folder on my hard drive, then pasted it onto my question and clicked "Post Message."
Suddenly, I was shown the following message: "500 Unable to insert thread into the database: Data truncation: Data too long for column 'body' at row 1."
I've seen others post miles-long crash reports, but mine apparently won't take. Did I post too much (i.e., all) of the crash report? If so, can someone please tell me how much of it is both postable and useful for those here more knowledgeable than I? Or did I likely do something else wrong?
Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hi Barry --
Thanks for your patience and for working with me on this. I suspected that my aging OS might have something to do with the problem; it appears you may suspect the same.
"Haxies/extenders?" I have no clue whether such things are installed on my Safari program, and can't figure out how to find out. If they are something that would have been installed by the user (me) after buying the computer, then no, I don't have them; I've never installed anything that didn't come with the machine. No games; no Firefox; nothing.
I went to the Utilities>Console and found the following:

It actually ran on much longer than that, but it kept repeating exactly the same info over and over again, so I copied/pasted only the first quarter or so. I hope it will not cause the same problem that got me into this thread in the first place.
I cliked on the support link you provided re archive and install. It definitely didn't look like something I should attempt myself; if anyone can screw it up, it's me. So maybe the best course of action is to bite the financial bullet and turn my machine over to the local professional Apple guru to figure out and do whatever is necessary without causing everything to go haywire. My wife knows a good one.
Maybe I'll try Firefox, too, although I notice on the Safari forum that a lot of people seem to have issues with Firefox as well.
Or maybe I need to face the fact that a five-year-old computer needs replacing. (Sigh) For a retired person, that's not quite such an automatic as it was back in working days.
Anyway, if you have any further ideas (or if you can tell me more about haxies), I'll be happy to listen and give them a try if they're not too complicated or dangerous.
    As always, thanks in advance!

  • Crashing/login problems

My MacBook pro, mid 2012 will not log in despite using the correct login. This problem started when I attempted to restart the computer after it had been running extremely slow, even with only one or two applications running. Additionally, I attempted to perform some software updates which failed. The computer has been having periodic problems with crashing and overheating. Any idea how I can get it to log into my user account?

Would you please clarify what site you are trying to log in to?
If the service is not a Mozilla service, it might be best to contact the customer support of that site instead of Mozilla Support, as they'll be better able to help resolve your problem.
    Thanks! :)

I had the exact same error/dump.
Here is what I did to fix it.
    1.  Get back to the last known good working verison.  Hopefully you have one or can delete enough artefacts to get back to the working copy.  When you have a version that exports properly, you can proceed to the next step.
    2.  Keep adding back items one at a time.  Do an export after each addition to make sure you are still ok.
    3.  It takes time but at some point you will find the item that caused the crash.
    4.  In my case it was a picture.  For me it was inserted about half-way through my project and that is roughly where it crashed during the export process (judging by the time remaining).
    5.  For me, I just added the picture back into the project.  Did not even have to create it or import it again.  Was worried it was corrupt, but was lucky.
    6.  The issue for me seemed to be the original addition of the picture to the project (again, nothing was wrong with the picture).
    Good luck.
p.s.Like most people, it tried different export sizes and methods (quicktime, export movie, publish to itunes).  All had the same issue.  None of these were causing the crash - it was the addition of the artefact.

  • Post Crash attempts to Get Back to OS X10.4.8 All Failing

I am so close yet so far away.
After 3 weeks of working on my Old Mac G4 (which was running 10.4.8 just fine before the crash), after running Disk Warrior (if you do have this Utility S/W on the self get it , it is the best $90 you will ever spend) to create a new directory to solve my B-Tree issues and after re-loading Tiger 10.4 from the Installation disk I am able to get the updates from Apple Support Downloads to update up to 10.4.11.  All others downloaded regardless of whether they are "Combo's" or "Incremental" will not install.  For example when I get past 10.4.2's S/W License Agreement and I see the drive mounted I want to load to it has a Red Exclamation Point on it and when I hit install I get the following message "Installing this software requires 125MB of space  (I have 8.7 GB and 1.25 GB SDRAM available). You can not install this Mac OS X Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." What requirements are being refered to?  Is it Firmware Update that is neeed, is do which one? Any thoughts??
The irony here is that the reason I know I was running up to 10.4.8 is that I have WD Backup Anywhere software loaded and it will not launch now as it requires a minimum of 10.4.8, so no access to my back-up files.  Yikes!
Thanks for you help and insights, Michael

I knew missing that day in 1st grade would come back to haunt me when the teacher covered number sequences!
Talk about a forest for the trees situation, it is just that I have hit so many error loops ect. in this re-build I was thinking that 10.4.2 had a ZERO after it so 20 is bigger than 11. Right?
OK, the Build # is 8S165 on my 10.4.11. What does that tell you?
So now that I know I at least exceed the Minimum OS S/W requirement of 10.4.8, I am beginning to think I will have to re-install the WD Backup Anywhere.  I say this because regardless of whether I double click on its icon in the APPLICATION folder or in the shortcut in DOCK, the icon pops, the margins of a page explode outward and then nothing.  I am a little fearful to do so as I do not want to lose my backup archives.  I will get in touch with them directly for advise on what to do.
Thanks so much for your response.  Michael

  • Itunes store bought music wont sync post crash of Iphone

Crash occurred due to last IOS update. One option on Itunes says it will erase all music on iphone and use everything in library. appreciate your help. Itunes seems more complex than necessary.

Were they bought in iTunes on the computer, or on the phone? If purchased on the computer, connect the phone to the computer, select Music tab, select what music you want to sync to the phone, click on Sync. See this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1351

  • Post-Crash Recovery Question

After a system crash, everything has been scrambled.  I'm now trying to
rebuild it.  I'm still on PSE 4.0, so perhaps my setup is too primitive for
my question -- but I'll try:
It does appear that I have been able to salvage most of the Tag and Collection
structures of the Catalog from an older backup, but there are a lot of
    pictures still missing.
So my question is: If I do a "GET" of a folder of pictures, (I have many such folders) is there some feature (or some way), within
Photoshop, to prevent it from accepting another copy of the same exact photo that it already has in its database"?  (My presumption is that there will be some pictures in that folder that have already been put into the Organizer, and some that have not -- I only want the ones that are not already in there.)  If there were just a few pictures, I could handle this manually.  But I have many hundreds, if not thousands.
Thank you very much for any guidance,

PSE has duplicate detection feature. While you import the photos if these are alredy there in database, these won't be reimported and the same would be prompted by a message.

  • IWeb restoration post-crash. Back up fine and ready to go. How??

Hi! My computer crashed but thankfully I had backup of everything. I want to update my website via iWeb, but my version doesn't show up. I have all of the files (backed up everything) including this one that contains everything: file:///Users/heidimoss/Desktop/My/My%20Documents/Music/Webpage/iWeb/Site/Home. html
But when I open iWeb I get a blank canvas to make a new one, and no option to get the former one, which is archived completely.
How can I get it back?
    Thanks-
    Heidi

iWeb cannot open the html files which make up the published site and which it creates on the fly when publishing. It keeps its data in a file called 'Domain' which by default lives in (user)/Library/Application Support/iWeb. If you can locate that and double-click it iWeb should open it an show your site - indeed it should have found it automatically on opening it. If it doesn't you may have moved the file and will need to locate it.
If you can't find the Domain file you will have to recreate your site from scratch, using the published version as a guide and a source for the images and text.
(Note: Apple have hidden the user’s Library folder in Lion and Mountain Lion to casual viewers, in an attempt to stop new Mac users messing their machines up. To access it, in the Finder go to the ‘Go’ menu and hold down the Option (Alt) key; the Library folder will appear as a choice.)

  • Post crash problems

Recently my computer crashed and we lost everything on it. now I can't download music from my library onto my ipod because "i am not authorized to play it on this computer." How can I fix this?

Do the songs play in iTunes ok, this might seem a very obvious question but did you reauthorise your computer after the crash? If your system crashes or you reinstall your operating system without deauthorising iTunes first you have to authorise it over again which uses up another of your allowances:
About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation
iPod does not play content purchased from the iTunes Music Store

  • Strategies for post-crash recovery?

After a freeze, forced reboot, and 48 hours with TechTool and DiskWarrior (worth every penny of the $80), I have my computer back. DiskWarrior was able to rescue files, but they're in a "rescued files folder." Some things aren't exactly working well. Spotlight can't find anything.
My question is what is the best strategy to recover full functionality after a crash like this? Should I wipe the disk and re-install. Or re-install over the current operating system?
Also, I have orphaned mail messages that I'd like to put back into mail. Is there an easy way to get them into a mailbox so I can sort them?
One of my iPhoto libraries disintegrated. I have the .jpgs, but am not sure how to put it all back together.
    Any tips or suggestions?

Personally I would back up my data and then format the HD and re-install. Also zero all data (which helps if you have bad sectors on the HD). Then re-import your data.

  • Recovering Purchased music post-crash

Following a hard drive crash, I re-installed iTunes on Windows XP. I then copied my iPod's music onto iTunes.
I then synced my iPod to the new iTunes library, but now, I can't play purchased music on the iPod. They appear in iTunes, but when I sync, I get the following message:
"Some of the items could not be copied to the iPod because you are not authorized to play them on this computer."
The songs are in my iTunes library, so any suggestions on how to get them back onto my iPod would be greatly appreciated.
Ancient Dell Dimension PC   Windows XP

I think I figured it out! In the iTunes library, go to File, then choose "transfer purchases from ipod". This will put all the songs from your ipod into your current iTunes library. Next, go to File, then choose "sync songs from ipod". It will give you the same message about deleting the existing stuff on your ipod. Choose the option to delete and sync. Since all your music is in your library, it will come back over to your ipod. Good luck!

  • How to DISABLE post-crash session restore?

I'm not sure whose idea it was to remove (or move) the configurable option that controls this.
HINT: when Firefox crashes with 40+ windows or tabs open, not only do I NOT want my computer to have an aneurysm trying to re-open them all simultaneously after a crash, BUT SURPRISINGLY ENOUGH, forcing the browser to re-open all of the pages it was browsing when it crashed seems to INVITE THE PROGRAM TO CRASH AGAIN.
("Oh, you crashed while loading that page? Well then let's automatically open the exact same page after you've recovered from the crash!")

Set the pref [http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes] to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first restart after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.
That will allow you to deselect the tab(s) that you do not want to reopen, but will allow to reopen the other tabs.
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Session_Restore#Restoring_a_session_after_a_crash
    Load Tabs Progressively: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/91919/
