Post Install Issue - Command Not Recognised [NOW A NETWORK ISSUE]

After an apparently successful install, when I reboot and type 'ifconfig', I get 'command' not found. Looks like a path command is missing to where that program lives. How can I backtrack and set up paths to where stuff lives?

Following the beginners' guide, in the post-installation section, I try: '$ ping -c 3 example.com' but I get the response: 'ping: unknown host example.com'
When I run edit /etc/rc.conf, all I see is: "/etc/rc.conf" 119 lines, 3827 characters.
I did a fresh install following the beginners' guide as apposed to the one I found on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjTTl_9a … re=related) and got the same issues.
What am I doing wrong?

If you installed Leopard that is why you can't install Mt Lion. The system Must be running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to upgrade to Lion or Mt Lion.
If you only erased the Macintosh HD partition then you left the Mt Lion Recovery HD partition in tact on that system. At startup hold down the Command+r keys to boot to the Recovery HD Partition. From there erase the Macintosh HD partition and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. It should then download Mt Lion and ask you for the Apple ID that was used to purchase Mt Lion.
The Reason Snow Leopard might not be installing is because of the Recovery HD partition. To get rid of that you must First Re-Partition the drive As One Partition. Then install Leopard then SL (Or Snow Leopard from the start) and then update it to 10.6.8. Once that is done you should be able to log on to the Mac App Store and Re-Download Mt Lion.

I am trying to install a brand new WD 500 gb sata internal hd in my macbook pro. the original install dvd does not recognise the hd. all hardware is ok. any help?

For some reason OS X disks (whatever edition or flavors) that are supplied with Apple products only seem to contain a limited knowledge of available hard drives on the market at the time of thier publishing. This (rather opportunistically) creates a "Best Before" stale-OS X-software-copy situation where upgrading to or replacing a defective internal SATA hard drive with a newer, better or larger one is a largely hit and miss affair.
If you buy the latest and greatest disk drive available for any older Mac you are likely to run into unresolvable problems making a clean re-install of your own, old edition or flavor of OS X onto any newer or larger hard drive since the OEM (gray) "OS X Install Disks" that Apple supply with retail products seem to contain only time-sensitive lists/mapings of then-known target drives that the Drive Management Tool in the then-published old "Installer Software" will support.
Presumably new (colorful "X") retail versions of OS X (10.whatever.whatever) also contain time-limited Installers with limited knowledge of and adaptability to/compatability with a limited number of old hard drives then kicking-around on the market.
This is especially a problem nowadays since the countless "puny old" hard drives that have been on the market are largely obsolete in a few months time, as manufacturers continue to produce larger and cheaper units, discontinuing older puny products... So if your drive fails you need an exact old (or similar familial) replacement drive for your "backup copy of OS X" to do a fresh, clean OS X re-install. Otherwise you need to purchase a new retail version of OS X, since yours is now effectively obsolete. Purchasing an old, puny drive to re-install your version.flavor of OS X to avoid buying a new version of OS X is a rather false economy.
If you still have a working old hard drive with your old polluted 10.version.flavor of OS X still working on it you apparently must clone it with Time Machine or the newest version of Disk Utility (disk image copying) to most newer, larger drives, and a clean reinstall to such new hard drives is not possible.

  • My Mac Pro will not recognise my Wireless Network.

My Mac Pro will not recognise my wireless network. It is showing those around me but not mine. I have my iPhone connected to it and my friends laptop also. I have restarted my mac and also the router but still not appearing on my Mac. Help please??

It was working previously but suddenly dropped out

  • New Hard Disc Drive installed but is not recognised on reboot.

My Toshiba Satellite A200-1BW hard drive went (200gb, mk2035gss). I bought a new 500gb (mq01abd050) toshiba one and replaced it. After formatting it will not recognise the new drive. It goes through the formating process ok. on startup it says:-
"media test failure" then later:- "Windows could not complete the installation, To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation."
so far I have:- reinstalled/formatted many times. device manager in dos. disabled all network adapters and then restart. I do not have the option in BIOS to go from sata mode to compatability mode. Is this a Bios problem? mine is ISKAE BIOS VERSION V1.30 (26/32007). tried downloading new bios but appears not to work.
I have 2048mb of ram in the machine. windows vista ultimate.
I can boot up sometimes with the old drive which works for a while before freezing. I can attach the 500gb hdd externally via usb and it works fine. It has two partitions. 1.46gb WinRE and Vista. The old hdd 200gb has the same1.46gb and Vista. however when i use computer management the old hdd says the 1.46gb partition is healthy(EISA Configuration) and the new 500gb 1.46gb partition says healthy (primary partition), and the old hdd vista says healthy (system, Boot, Page file, Active, Crash dump, Primary partition). The new vista just says healthy (Active, Primary partition).
Is this the problem or is this simple because it has not configured everything yet as it has never booted from the new drive? How do i get the new drive to say system, boot etc....... the old drives 1.46gb partion has no name and i cannot open it to see what's in there. the new one WinRE i can open. it has boot.sdi and a folder  "sources". in that folder is a file boot.wim The files installed on the new drive look the same as the old drive as far as I can see.
in computer management i have made the new hdd default OS. If I reboot and go into system recovery options it lists the 2 drives. the old one says "microsoft windows vista"  the new drive says" windows vista (tm) ultimate (recovered)
CD drive may need replacing so if I need to use the recovery disc again I will need help making a USB flash drive to boot up as the one i tried did nothing. what other info do you need?

Hi! I'm not much help, but I seem to be the only one replying. I don't know Norton ghost 10. I use Macrium Reflect and I have always been able to restore my drive to just like the day I made the image. I have done it many times. Macriuum Reflect is my best friend. I just boot with the Linux based CD that you make on day one. I plug in my external USB. Macrium finds all my images and I just chose the date I want and in less than two hours I'm back up and running. I have never lost on bite of data and it has never let me down. I have no use for any thing Norton makes.
    Dokie!!
PS The screen shot shows all three partitions of my HD. I can chose any one partition or all three if I'm restoring to a new drive. This is all I know. I can also mount any partition and see what is on it with Macrium.
PS Here is all the files that are on my recovery partition.

  • TS1363 My 5th Gen ipod is not recognised now on my itunes when i plug it in via usb, what should i do having tried all the troubleshooting advice? It works ok on another laptop.

Tried TS1 363 still not recognised.

Your USB ports do not supply enough power to charge the iPad. That is normal and expected behavior. The iPod does not require nearly the same amount of power to recharge so it will work from your computer. Use the power adapter and plug into a wall socket to charge the iPad.
Are you sure that iTunes doesn't see the iPad? If you are running iTunes 11, from the menu at the top go to View>Show Sidebar. After the sidebar is enabled - do you see the iPad under the Devices heading in the sidebar?

  • Issue with LDAP Connection becuase of Network issue

    Hello All,
We have some network issues going on which is causing the NIC (Network interface card) to failover to another NIC. Due to this failover SUN access manager's LDAP connection pool fills up and we see errors in logs "Directory is down". We have to restart the Access manager to resolve this issue which refresh the connection pool of LDAP.
Now we have set the setting as recommended in admin guide/tuning guide. Like
    1. Set event connection idle timeout to less that firewall or loadbalancer idle timeout value.
    2. event connection retry count and interval on perticular error code.
Despite of above settings its not working out. Is there other way to get all the stale connections back to the LDAP pool without restarting the server?
Or something which handles the network failover or failback?
    Regards
    Chetan Kulshrestha

The user search name is the value you should be looking at in the LDAP attributes, that's the one that it will send to LDAP on a logon attempt. If you changed this value after mapping a group, I'm not sure but you may have to remap the group to get the change.
So on the LDAP side verify the user search attribute = the username you expect to login with (i.e. cn, samaccountname, uid, etc)
    Regards,
    Tim

  • Ipod 'charging' issues & ipod not recognised by itunes/laptop

    Hi
My ipod was working fine until last week when it appeared to have no battery. Now whenever it is being charged it is always in a 'charging' status despite the fact that it can have been charging for hours and should be fully charged. Also when I unplug it, the screen constantly displays the charging or charged symbols despite not being connected to any power - it does not seem to switch off completely anymore. Sometimes I will charge my ipod for hours and my ipod screen says it is charging but then as soon as I unplug it from the power my ipod suddenly has not battery. Also, my ipod is now not being recognised by my computer or itunes. I have installed itunes 10 so I am not sure if this is an ipod classic compatibility issue.
I hope that my post makes sense!! Has anybody else had any of the above problems??
    allie

First thing to try is a reset of your iPod.
Turn the Hold switch on then off again and then press-and-hold the Menu and Select (centre) buttons until the Apple logo appears. This can take about ten seconds for the logo to appear. The iPod will then reset (which can take a couple of minutes or so).
Has a reset corrected the problem? If not, perhaps the battery has reached the end of its useful life. How old is the iPod?
After a few years (there is no exact number) the battery will wear out and not accept charging any more. Whn it gets to this point, the option is to replace the battery using either Apple ioor a third party, or consider buying a new iPod.

  • Error in Archive & Install and PB not booting now.

    I have a PB G4 with OSX Tiger 10.4.11.
After doing an auto-update of QT, there was a "shared library error" that prevented me from opening word, excel....I decided to perform Archive & Install.
The installation process was going well until a message appeared saying "Please try installing again".
I restarted my computer and got to "Select a destination volume to install the Mac OS X software" screen only to find that there was no destination listed to select. Earlier there was "Macintosh HD" but now there was nothing.
On opening Disk Utility I got to a window that had four discs listed in the left-hand column of the window. These were:
    a)74.5 GB TOSHIBA MK8026GAX
b)Macintosh HD (in light grey colour which shows that it is inactive)
    c)4.0 GB MATSHITA DVD-R Uj-845E Media
    d)Mac OS X Install Disc 1
Under the "First Aid" tab in the main column I selected 74.5 GB TOSHIBA MK8026GAX and clicked "verify". It gave an error message: "Invalid node structure. The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired. The underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 HFS Checked Volume needs repair."
Then I selected Macintosh HD & selected "repair" & got the following error message:
Invaild node structure. Rebuilding Catalogue B-tree. The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 HFS volume checked. 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error. Repair attempted on 1 volume. 1 volume could not be repaired.
The other two tabs, "Verify disk permissios" & "Repair disk permissions" were inactive all the time.
I even clicked on "Mount" when the "Macintosh HD" was selected. That gave the following message: "The disk Macintosh HD could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting."
Now when I switch on my PB:
a)If I DON'T have the installation disc1 inside the mac…it just gets to the grey screen with apple in the centre and after 2-3 minutes it switches off automatically.
b)If I HAVE the installation disc1 inside the mac then it gets to the basic installation screen telling me to select language and continue which further leads to the select destination screen with no destination to select.
Does anyone have any idea what’s going on with my mac? All I did was an auto-update of QT 7.2 to 7.3.1.
    Please help.

    unmo:
Let's begin with HDD space. A too full HDD is an invitation to disaster. As I noted previously, you should have a mimimum of 5 GB free space for virtual memory, swap files and whatever you are working on for OS X to function efficiently. A too full HDD can lead to directory issues, as you learned, data loss and an eventual HDD crash. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space gives more info on this. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk has excellent suggestions to clear some of the clutter. In addition, you may be well advised to consider a larger internal HDD, and, if you do not already have one, to initiate a backup strategy. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery offers helpful suggestions. If you have questions about any of these please do post back.
Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance and Macintosh OS X Routine Maintenance are excellent resources of OS maintenance. Look them over and post back with any questions that arise.
    Good luck.

  • Cuda installed but application not recognising it

I have a MacPro 3,1 with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 2Gb graphic card. I've installed the Cuda driver and the necessary command line tools according to these instructions.
I have run the tests to see if installation was complete and got positive results. (See below.) When I open sorenson Squeezepro (9.0.3.11) and check the GPU preference panel I'm told Cuda drive is not installed on this computer.  Can anyone tell me if there is a sure fire way to check that Cuda is properly installed? If it is installed properly, why won't Squeeze recognise it/

I'll try to help you, Lars. H. According to sorenson, your card does support CUDA
here are the drivers for snow Leopard
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/MacOSX-CUDA-3.0.html
here are minimum requirements for cuda in Sorenson Squeeze
nvida CUDA driver 3.1 or better, GPU driver 19.5.9f02, whatever that means, 512 meg of video memory
and here you will find latest  CUDA
    drivers for your nVidia card
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/mac-driver-archive.html
see if that helps you out. CUDA 6.5.18 adds support for 10.9.5. You're supposed to be also able to download it by going to system prefences, then "other" , then CUDA, but I don't have that installed on my Pro, so I can't help you much more than this .
    John B
sorry-quick note here. If you go into Sorenson Squeeze, then Menu, then Preferences, then go to the GPU tab. your card should be recognized after you update the CUDA, then go to the GPU tab. Also, 10.9.5 may require that video memory for itself, leaving nothing for Sorenson Squeeze. You may have to buy a better video card, maybe
whew ! hopefully this fixes it for now

  • Some installed applications are not recognised by App Store

    Hi,
I have a few apps installed on my mac book pro. Trouble is that some are not being recognised by App store hence it does not check if an update is available for them. One of them is disturbingly FaceTime. It is part of Lion OS and I have no idea why it shows up as a purchase in my mac app store. The others such as Garageband, iMovie and iPhoto are showing as installed though..
    can this be resolved?

Nohing wrong with what you see.
App Store usualy only shows updates for Apps that were bought/downloaded from the App Store.
The Facetime app in the App Store is only for OSX Snow Leopard but not for OSX Lion since it became a part of OSX with Lion.
Garageband, iMovie and iPhoto ar shown as installed in the App Store since they were part of the iLife suite that was preinstalled on your Mac when you bought it together with OSX Lion.

  • VM Tools install fails: "command not found"

    Hi guys,
I'm running a Linux Mint guest on Win7 x32 using VMWare Player 6.0.5. It's basically going well, but I'm unable to install Tools. I open a terminal in the directory of the extracted files, then run the command under SUDO, but the command is not found. I'm attaching a shot of the command line and the target directory.
I re-extracted the Tools package, which is why the folder has " (2) appended to it, but that made no difference. Any help would be appreciated.

Please put your script between "code" format delimiters.

You can add the line "set -x" at the beginning of your script to see at which line it fails? I suspect the . ./env line.

  • Error message: apps installed on ipad not recognised when trying to sync

I am getting an error message when trying to sync saying itunes cannot sync apps to my ipad because the apps installed could not be determined. Does anybody know how to fix this?

were these bought with the same applie id?  when you are in the store, scroll to the bottom and confirm that you are logged in as the user you need to be.
Otherwise, do a reboot.  That sometimes clears stuff like this up.  Press and hold both the home and sleep buttons until the apple logo appears.  ignore the red slider.

  • How do I find the address of my usb ports so that I can connect a telescope to the macbook. I have tried various commands on terminal and all I get is 'directory or command not recognised'.

The telescope instruction says open a Terminal and put in ls/dev/* and other such things and all I get back is that none of them are recognised.
    JeffersE

Why don't you call the telescope company for support and let them explain it to you.  Usually there is software involved with those types of telescopes and if that software doesn't support Mac, it won't matter how or what USB port you plug it into because no drivers or anything will load for it.
