Post-iTunes re-install file problem

After re-installing iTunes on my Sony laptop, I get this error: "The iTunes library .itl file is locked, on a locked disc, or you do not have write permission for this file".  What should I do?

  • Can't find iTunes binary install file after download

I am trying to download the most recent version of iTunes (11.1.3 for Windows (64-bit)) to my 64-bit Windows 7 machine. (I currently don't have any version of iTunes installed on this machine.) When I click the Download button, I get a dialog box for the itunes64Setup.exe binary file, with the options "Save" and "Cancel." When I click "Save," the dialog box closes, but I don't get any subsequent dialog asking me where I want to save it to or anything. I looked in my Downloads folder, but it wasn't there. I then searched my whole computer for that file, but it doesn't appear to be anywhere on my machine.
So, how can I get this file to actually download to my machine, so I can install iTunes from it? I have Administrator access for my machine, so I know that's not the problem....
Thanks, in advance, for any help!

I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:

If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

  • Itunes update install - new problem - help before I jump out a window :)

Okay, so I should have learned the first 2 times I had this problem when trying to update to the newest version of itunes, but I decided to upgrade to 6.0.5 and when I did, everything installs hunky dory, and itunes starts to open, shows me the TOCs and asks me to agree or decline. When I hit agree, the window closes and NOTHING happens. I then am unable to open internet explorer, or mozilla, or any browser window, and can't kill the process for either itunes or quicktime....I end up having to manually shut off my system. So I've tried uninstalling and completely cleaning out the reg...tried installing standalone QT (which is what worked for me in the past), and get this...I even tried going back to 6.0.4 (still had an install of it on my jump drive) and....IT STILL DOESN'T WORK (only with 6.0.4. it doesn't ask me to agree to the TOCs and just does nothing without that step involved).
SERIOUSLY!!! SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME BEFORE I TOSS MY MACHINE OUT OF THE WINDOW OR INTO THE POOL!!!
PLEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSE (I'm close to losing it (not really, but still))

    Wow...I can't believe I'm saying it...but I think I'm giving up....
so after exhausting every possible option, I decided to hunt for a good registry cleaner (which I found, which was the one silver lining in this dark cloud of an experience - this cleaner being regvac)
so I cleaned up a bunch of poop, and itunes, quicktime, ipod related poop just hanging out in the registry, uninstalled some other programms that I decided that I either installed or re-installed since the last working install of itunes.....still the same **** thing
I think decided to remove all and go back to square one and try 6.0.4...same thing, only no TOS that I have to agree to after it tries to load
then I try 6.0.3 (this one has a TOS, but does the same **** thing), then 6.0.2, then one more version after that
    NO LUCK!!!
so then I say screw it and decide to go for 6.0.5 one more time, with a standalone QT install to go with it
which I do...and I start to think that the TOS won't even load, as it took a second, as it's loading, I'm watching it's process, and I see it rise from 10k slowly up to 22k (which is usually where it hovers at with my problem I've been having)...well it then rises to 38K!!!!!
hmmmmm.....I've decided there's just a ghost in my machine that I can't exercise or send back to his/her peaceful rest (the ghost in the machine)
I mean I uninstalled norton, uninstalled nero, uninstalled limewire (again, wasn't used to pirate music), uninstalled some other stuff I can't remember...get this...I even disconnected from my wireless router (netgear with build in firewall and running WPA (I thought that HAD to have something to do with it) and plugged straight in to the cable modem......and guess what??? still no luck
unless a guardian angel comes to rescue me, I'm afraid I'm reduced to only running itunes from my laptop sigh (at least it works there) and then I'll have to use my desky as a file server for my music (my laptop HD isn't big enough to tackle my music library)
oh alas....a week or 2 of troubleshooting and stressing...wasted.....
the least apple could do for my troubles is send me a free ipod to add to my collection :P

  • IPod and iTunes - Duplicate song file problem

I have many songs on my iPod that are the same. Is there an easy way to do a search and delete of all duplicate songs in one easy step, either thru the iPod itself, or iTunes?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Keith in MI

You can delete songs through the iPod on the iPod.
Are these songs in your iTunes library as well? You can go to edit-->show duplicates and then delete one of each copy.
There is no automatic way of doing this on Windows.

  • TS5179 I've been bitten by the "Missing MSVCR.dll file" problem when downloading the latest iTunes update (PC w/ Win-7 & Outlook-2007#. 'Have followed Apple's instructions of un-installing all Apple software, and re-installing it. #out of space...??)

I've been bitten by the "Missing MSVCR.dll file" problem when downloading the latest iTunes update, 11.4.62 (on a PC w/ Win-7 & Outlook-2007#. 'Have followed Apple's instructions of un-installing all Apple software, and re-installing it (Ugh).  First result Outlook couldn't find my 1,385 item contact file in iCloud, although the outlook distribution lists were there.  Second result, upon installing iCloud again, I have two iCloud contact files shown in outlook - "iCloud" & iCloud, within iCloud".  1,332 & 1,385 contacts respectively.
Plus an iCloud installation error message saying iCloud moved 6,835 files to a "deleted items folder" somewhere.  This is NOT fun at 72-yrs old...!!
So, how do I make sure I haven't lost anythying from Outlook?   Russ-AZ

Interesting response, Kappy  -  Back to original post: "First result: Outlook couldn't find my 1,385 item contact file in iCloud, although the outlook distribution lists were there (therefore, initially I had lost my contact file from Outlook).  Second result, upon installing iCloud again, I now have two iCloud contact files shown in Outlook - "iCloud" & iCloud, within iCloud".  W/ 1,332 & 1,385 contacts respectively.
Plus an iCloud installation error message saying iCloud moved 6,835 files to a "deleted items folder" somewhere.  This is NOT fun at 72-yrs old...!!
So, how do I make sure I haven't lost anythying from Outlook?   Russ-AZ"
You can safely assume that I have tried using it!   So, to make things a little clearer:
         1)  I now have two iCloud "contacts files", w/ a different total count. What's the difference?  Why the different toatl count?
         2)  Since re-installing the Apple software (part of the MSVCR" recovery instructions) "couldn't possible affected Outlook", why am I getting an iCloud installation error message saying iCloud moved 6,835 files to a "deleted items folder" somewhere.  What's in those files? And where are they?
Probably more important questions get down to:
         3)  Why is a basic Apple product upgrade "screwing-up Outlook"?  This iTunes upgrade, failing to install properly forced Outlook 2007 into a 2-min start-up cycle.  Which was fixed with this "Goat-Rpdeo" of re-installing MSVCR80.dll.
         4)  And under the latest release of iOS-7.0.4 on our iPhones, why is Apple now forcing us to use the iCloud to back-up our contacts, calendars & tasks, vs. allowing these files to be backed-up directly on our PC's via the USB cable?
Thanks again for your interest and comments.  - Russ-AZ

  • I have installed iTunes on my new windows 7 dell laptop every time I start it it comes up with an error saying itunes has encountered a problem and it closes ? any answers have tried command prompt reset and it has not resolved it also un/reinstalled

I have installed iTunes on my new laptop OS Windows 7. I have two iphones, a 3rd gen nano and an ipod classic.
Since the install yesterday I keep getting an error message which itunes has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a soluion is available.
I have un and re installed and followed a command promt reset.
I still have the problem. Any ideas?

Ok. So I created a new account and iTunes did work. I went back into my original account and tried again and just to be more clear, after I open iTunes it asks me to accept or decline the agreement, I do that, then it says "updating library", and then one all the bars are full it closes and says "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close."
okay, let's start working through the user-account-specific causes of this message.
one possibility is damaged itunes preference files in the user account in which you're getting the crash. (there's a different set of those in each different user account, which is how we can get crashes limited to a single user account.)
if that is what is going on, we can often get past this by rebuilding the preference files in the account that is crashing. for the preference files rebuild technique, see my reply to kusma in this post:

I pulled my brains out trying to figure this bug out and I may have a solution for you.
All of it installed fine in my desktop, but a friend's laptop got the error you mentioned on quicktime, itunes, flash, officeXP and about anything else I tried to load for him.
If you look in: C:\documents and settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp there will be an iTunes install log...open it in Notepad and see if it isn't exiting with a 1619 error while running msiexec.exe
If this is the case, this fix should work for you.
Seems some configurations of XP (and possibly Vista) aren't allowing full administrator rights to the account you set up when you installed XP (even though User Editor says you do have those rights.)
I read 2 MS articles and turned off simple file sharing, then gave ownership of the entire C: drive to the administrator. Logged the admin account off, logged his "admin" account in, and then gave rights to his personal directory to his account (c:\docs and settings\<username>)
Once I did that, every install that had previously errored out performed flawlessly.
    The MS articles in question:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316309 (1619 error)
    and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308419 (how to set special permissions)
    Hope this helps!

A bit of repetition, mainly for the benefit of anyone else with the same issue. In your case the "for older video cards" version might be worth a try.
When cleaning folders you need to check both the Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders, which you may well have done but didn't mention in the detail above.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The section Install missing components has advice on breaking down the iTunes installer into the individual .msi files which might prove useful if Apple Mobile Device Support won't install normally.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for performance issues or compatibility with third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to close when adding movie files

So.. I haven't done anything recently with installing any new versions of itunes or anything of the such. Just one day whenever I tried to add .mp4 files (videos) on my ipod using Itunes, it crashes with the error message "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close." and it closes the application. I can add music files just fine.
anyone else having this issue? If so, can you let me know what you have done to fix this problem?
Also, I got fed up today and decided to uninstall Itunes and Quicktime and then downloaded the most recent off Apple's site and that still didn't work.
    Please help....
    Ipod Video 80GB   Windows XP

One other thing.. all the movies that I currently have in Itunes that once worked no longer work either. It crashes when I attempt to play them as well in Itunes.

  • Can't install iTunes, "Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I just got a new Dell. My old iTunes 5.0 wouldn't install, so I downloaded the new 7.0, and am having an issue. I have tried all of the support recommendations on this site, including deleting everything and reinstalling, changing the audo and speaker settings, QTime settings, etc (although when I try to uninstall Quicktime it won't let me). I even did the MSCONFIG and tried to do a selective start up with just iTunes. I initally was getting the Ipod Service error that people have posted about, but once I deleted my old Ipod Updater, that stopped, but now this is what happens: The install appears to go through just fine, and says it has completed. But when I try to click the icon, it says "Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close". Any ideas? This is very frustrating. My daughter just got an Ipod for Christmas and is terribly upset she can't use it.
    Thanks
    April

I finally got it to work. Uninstall quicktime and itunes. Go to quicktime and just install quicktime and then go to itunes and install itunes. This solved my problem. Yeh. After 3 days I finally got it. Good luck!

  • When trying to uninstall iTune (because the current install has problems), I get the error message 2324.  What should I do to reinstall the application?

When trying to uninstall iTune (because the current install has problems; iTune error message states it cannot sync and that I should reinstall the application; also, it fails when I tried to upgrade to the latest release), I get the error message 2324.  What should I do to reinstall the application?

That installer error is a "Can't open file" error
It suggest that you may have a corrupt file.
    Try running a disk check
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Check-a-drive-for-errors
If it fixes errors try uninstalling iTunes again.
If that doesn't work, is it possible for find out the name of the problem file, is further information available? Try looking in your Action center - that's on the control panel. Another place is in the Windows Error logs. From the start menu , right click on "Computer" and select manage, then Event viewer.
If nothing emerges, try a manual uninstall of iTunes and related programs according to this method:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Don't worry if an uninstall fails, that is expected. Go on to the part where you have to delete files (2. Verify iTunes etc completely deleted) . Hopefully you manage to find a file that can't be deleted, that is the one we will need to deal with.

  • ITunes 8.2 has problems handling larger music files

    Hi,
After upgrading to iTunes 8.2, I have begun to notice that the program is halted with larger mp3 files. I have quite a lot of music files with size 200MB and above and before opening them, iTunes stops for about 10-15 seconds (with "beach ball" on the screen), then the playback starts normally. This is not an actual problem, but pretty annoying though. iTunes 8.2 behaves in the same way both on my black MacBook, as well as on my oldie G4 iMac running Tiger. Never noticed such a behaviour with earlier 8.1 version of iTunes.
Has anyone encountered similar problem and could there be any remedy? Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Matt

    iso_omena,
I can't duplicate your problem here, so maybe there's something about your machine or the software installed on it. Do you have any iTunes plugins installed?
You can also take a sample of iTunes while it's hung and send it to our good buddy, Roy, who will forward it to the right Apple engineers. To sample iTunes:
    1. Open the terminal app in /Applications/Utilities
    2. Get iTunes into the state where you have the spinning cursor and the music's not playing.
    3. At the command prompt in the terminal window, type in "sample iTunes 10". This will sample iTunes for 10 seconds and then tell you where it put the output file.
    4. You need to send that file to <[email protected]>. Make sure that you include:
    (1) the sample file.
    (2) the link to this thread.
    (3) a one line description of your problem, i.e. "iTunes crashes on launch".
    (4) the username that you're using here in the discussion boards.
Roy is getting a little swamped with messages and needs to make sure he gets all the information. And if he doesn't get that information, the message is just going to get dropped on the floor.

When itunes is installed missing file -45075 appears, any suggestions

    Me too.
I have looked at 2-3 other posts, and they still fail to resolve this.
I have reinstalled iTunes; I have repaired every other Apple component and ......
    Same message every time.
I am running fully updated Windows 8 (not 8.1 yet though)
Looking at the number of posts in this discussion group, it does appear to be something that Apple could take a more proactive lead on.  Either a more meaningful error message, or ideally a fully loaded iTunes installation.
COME ON GUYS - help us out here.
If it wasn't that I NEED iTunes to manage and backup my phone, I'd uninstall the %^$*&^ lot.   That said, my 4G upgrade to the iPhone 5S is now in serious doubt ... maybe a time for a complete change.

  • Problem opening Itunes after installing

Recently, I had to run a system restore on my computer to get around a bunch of viruses. I had to install Itunes all over again and now it won't open. If I try to open Itunes, the error box just pops up to say "Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close". I've re-installed it and tried again but no luck. Help?

Uninstall QuickTime then download the file again and reinstall QuickTime. iTunes needs a functional QuickTime in order to operate properly. I had the same error, and iTunes has been working fine.
