Post-Lightning Strike: No Sound

I have a 5 year old 15" MacBook Pro (2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo).  We had a tree behind our house struck by lightning, and we were close enough that several things in our house got fried: TV, washing machine, my 23" monitor, the 85 watt power supply for my laptop, and curiously, it looks like my sound is dead.  Both the power supply and monitor were connected to the laptop in question which was asleep at the time.
The volume icon in the menu bar is grayed out.  If I do anything with the volume/mute buttons, it shows full volume and a circle with a slash through it.  If I open Preferences/Sound/Output, it doesn't show speakers, just optical digital-out port.
So my question is, for all you hardware experts, have you ever seen something like this where the sound is blown but the rest of the system seems OK?  Is the sound integrated into the system board, or can it be replaced seperately?  I haven't noticed any other problems with the system, and it has been rebooted since the surge.  Unfortunately my house is in major disarray and can't be lived in with a giant hole in the roof and water damage, so it's going to be several days before I can dig out my Tech Tools disc.
Any thoughts are appreciated, and thanks in advance!

One additional bit of info: I just did a Permissions repair and a Verify Disk, the Verify seemed fine.  The permisions repair showed something interesting, which I think is not related, but you never know:
Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”

Based on another post that I saw after I posted this, I'm going to do a PRAM and SMC reset shortly, we'll see what happens.

  • HDMI, Headphone Jack, Ethernet port doesn't work after lightning strike

I have a Mac Mini mid 2011 model. After a recent thunder storm/lightning strike the ports mentioned doesn't work anymore. Do I have to replace the whole logic board to get it working again?  What are my options in fixing the mini? Luckily, I'm currently using a Thunderport to HDMI, a USB adapter for sound, and USB to Ethernet for internet. The mini still starts up as well as everything else, but those three ports were hit and are no longer responsive.
Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately.   This is why I never leave my computer plugged in to power or electrical devices when I leave the house in any sort of unpredictable weather situation that may include lightning.   There is no surge protector that can protect against a direct lightning strike.

  • Lightning strikes fry PoE modules?

I have several production facilities that I oversee. One Friday one of these facilities had a series of thunderstorms during which roughly 20 IP phones quit working as well as the plants internet connection. The ports where my IP phones are connected were reporting:
"Apr 17 09:20:47.968 CST: %ILPOWER-3-CONTROLLER_PORT_ERR: Controller port error, Interface Gi0/41: Power given, but Power Controller does not report Power Good"
We moved the phones to different ports and they were all working fine once moved. We tried resetting two of the switches and reconnecting phones to their original locations to no avail.
While the phones were connected if I did a "show power inline" those ports were showing faulty. This locations ASA also lost its internet connection due to a port getting shorted out as well.
My question is this, is it possible that there was a lightning strike to the plant that backfed surplus electricity through my ethernet network that would cause this action? All of the affected devices were connected to a UPS that was also doing power conditioning and surge suppression.

I checked the error message and most of the times resulted to be hardware failure.
So to me it feels "yes" lightening could have caused some issue
Please get the switch replaced if reload did not help.
    Hope this helps

  • Lightning strike on G5 - need some advice!!!

Hi - had an electrical storm recently and a lightning strike on my house which terminated, amongst everything electrical, my beloved G4 and G5 PowerMac. The G4 is fried and doesn't even turn on. As for my G5 (which has all my info and pictures, etc - and yes my backup disk was fried too, and my surge protector!!!) - it still turns on, I get the chime, the hard drives spin etc. Once I changed the USB port connection, I got the keyboard and mouse working as well. The only problem is that I have no video signal. I have zapped the PRAM via the keyboard and the button (under the RAM modules) and tried starting up from a boot CD. Any ideas what I should do next/replace/etc?
    Many thanks
    Christian

2nd that would be on my list:

  • Lightning arrestor handle a direct lightning strike

can lightning arrestor handle a direct lightning strike and discharge this energy to a properly installed earth ground?

Yes, it can....A good ground must be attached to the Arrestor. This can be accomplished by use of a ground lug attached to the Arrestor, and a heavy wire (#6 solid copper) connecting the lug to a good earth ground.

  • IPod blamed for teenager's lightning strike

Could this really happen? Regardless of what the experts say?
"A 17-year-old Colorado teenager blames his iPod for being struck by lightning while mowing the lawn. Jason Bunch says the current from the strike traveled through the headphone wires of his iPod, burning his ears, cheeks and side. The Denver post reports: “The wounds follow the line of his iPod, from his ears down his right side to his hip, where he was carrying the device. The iPod has a hole in the back, and the earbuds dissolved into green threads. Bunch and his mother believe the iPod acted as an antenna, drawing the lightning to him. There were tall pine trees nearby that didn’t get hit.” Weather experts, however, say that is unlikely. “There is no scientific evidence to show that lightning is ‘attracted’ to items like an iPod. However, if someone wearing earbuds is struck, current may travel along the wires into the ears,” said Gregory Stewart of the Denver-based Lightning Reference Center. “There are documented cases of lightning traveling through wired telephones and killing the users."

    Could this really happen?
    It DID happen.
Regardless of what the experts say?
The experts didn't say this didn't happen. They did say the iPod is not what caused him to get hit by lightning.
However, since he was wearing it when he go hit, the electricity simply took the path of least resistance - the wires - which are made specifically to conduct electricity.

sounds like your Flash player is either not working or disabled. probably easiest to uninstall Adobe Flash Player, and then reinstall it.
go to start > control panel > add/remove programs (or Programs and Features if your on Vista/7). find Adobe Flash Player and uninstall it.
then, visit http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html to get the latest version.

  • When lightning strikes

Well I unplugged the power cable and forgot the modem line. The pop I heard verified it. Sounded like a firecracker.
Well my modem isnt working and my audio ins and outs are gone as well as my firewire ports.
Itunesplay button doesn't work guess it sees there is no audio out port now. FCP will not start up due to no firewire port either.
System profiler says there is a modem hmm...
It will not "restart" by itself so I have to shut down hard... but it will shutdown own its own with a command.
Well any thing to try to get my audio ports back ?
    Thanks
    Tony B

I would take it to an apple retail store and see what they say about applecare, and new motherboards. I don't think that lightning is covered because it is "an act of god". This is how the iBook manual puts it.

  • Ethernet failure:lightning strike

    hello
my first post...is there a pci slot ethernet card that will work with my G4.
lightning zapped my ethernet connection and also my partners PC,but she got a new card for £5.00
otherwise its a new logic board.
    regards

Get yourself a Surge supressor that has Ethernet dataline protection. I use an APC Back-Ups 750. Ever since I installed that between my cable modem and my broadband router, I haven't had a single piece of hardware die on me (Knock-on-wood...)
Of course all my PC's and my Cable Modem, Router, and Switch all are connected to APC battery back-ups for power as well.

  • Post Yosemite upgrade: crackling sound appears

    Hello All,
I have a Late 2013 13" Macbook Pro Retina. I just upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks and have noticed this crackling sound coming from the laptop even if nothing is running. I am quite positive it never made this noise before. Has anyone else noticed this; is this something I should be worried about?

I noticed the exact same thing. Sound comes from the left side, probably under the Caps Lock key.
I have nothing running except Chrome and it won't stop crackling, as if it were an old laptop struggling to run an application. I checked the activity monitor and my RAM usage seems fine (if I'm not mistaken, though the memory used at 5.77 GB seems a bit high?)

  • How to reset after a lightning strike?

Lightning struck near my mother's house (which is 2500 miles from my house.).
I'm going to try and help her get the airport running again (over the phone) but am wondering what the best steps are to troubleshoot.  I realize it may be done for, but what to help her give it a try....
    Thanks

Pull the round power connector from the back of the AirPort Extreme, then pull the AC plug from the AirPort Extreme's power cord from the AC wall jack.
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the wall AC jack, then plug the round power connector into the back of the AirPort Extreme
Allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart
If things are OK, you will either have a green light, or a slow, blinking amber light on the front of the AirPort Extreme.
Green indicates that things might work OK, assuming that the modem or other associated products were not damaged.
Blinking amber indicates a setup issue and AirPort Utility will be needed to identify and troubleshoot the issue.
Solid amber, or no light at all indicates that the AirPort Extreme is done for

  • Ethernet port fried by lightning strike?

My phone line and home was struck by lightning this weekend. All of the DSL filters in my home were fried and blown open simultaneously, the DSL modem was fried, and even with a new modem, I cannot connect. Is there any way (without taking it in) to test the ethernet port itself? Is there some sort of internal diagnostic that can detect a faulty port? The computer works fine otherwise. IF the port is dead, is it better to buy a new computer? (My insurance is covering all damages), or is the cost to repair something like this minor? I have read about using an airport as a go-around, but I'd rather fix the problem, not patch it. ANY and all info will be helpful. Thanks.

If the Ethernet port on an iMac is fried, you can replace that port only by _replacing the entire motherboard_. Depending on the kind of motherboard, the price could be several hundred dollars. It might be more cost-effective to get a new computer.

  • Why does my airport extreme have 2 of the LAN port on but not the main light after a lightning strike ??!

    pleasee help!!

Unfortunately, this is a symptom that a power surge has damaged the AirPort Extreme. There is likely nothing that can be done other than replacing the device.
If you have an Apple store or authorized servicer in your area, you should take it to them so they can have a look at the device to confirm. As user stinkybumbler mentions, it would be a good idea to have any of your sensitive electronic gear plugged into a high quality surge protection device.

  • Time capsule not working at all. Possible lightning strike ;(

Any ideas how to get the TC to work again? No light displayed in the TC and seems totally dead. Wireless not working either.
    Thanks

If not front LED then you should take it to your nearest Apple store for repair.
