Post-Modification Problems: Hard Freezes. Kernel Panic?

So, I bought a used Dual 867MHz MDD back in March and it appeared to be 100% functional. It even had gone through the PSU/fan exchange program (and was still slightly loud). Comparing it to a Dual 867MHz MDD I got just a week ago, it had a different PSU, all different fans, a different heatsink, different optical drive, and a better GPU (Radeon 9000 Pro 64MB as opposed to the "new" DP867 having a GeForce 4 MX 32MB).
About two weeks ago I overclocked the system bus on the first DP867 to 167MHz, thus bringing the CPUs to 1.08GHz. No problems there. I even changed the heatsink to a copper one from a DP1.42GHz FW800 model. Again, no problems. Pre-mod I had a 4x512MB config of PC2700 Crucial DDR memory at CL2.5. I replaced those with a 2x1GB config of PC3200 Princeton DDR memory at CL2 (2-3-2-5 to be exact) that have heatspreaders. I didn't change the GPU (though I have a Radeon 9800 Pro I'm going to put in once I resolve my problems... read on...).
Pre-mod and post-mod any RAM that is PC2700 or faster is showing up as PC2600 in System Profiler, which I find very odd. That same Crucial RAM is now in the un-modded DP867 which has a 133MHz bus and it, again, shows up as PC2600. I find this odd.
When I first got the now-modded MDD, I replaced the stock 60GB IBM HDD with a Maxtor 200GB drive that has a 16MB buffer. Works fine. All this time, though, it was on the ATA66 bus. Post-mod, I moved it to the ATA100 bus and then my problems began...
The machine would boot just fine. In fact, it would boot so fast I never saw the blue OS X loading screen. Kind of freaky. Then it would HARD crash in 1-5 minutes. The only solution was to hold in the power button until the machine turned off. Putting the drive back on the ATA66 bus didn't help. Back on the ATA100 bus, I could not re-install OS X from a 10.4.3 disc I have (guy who sold me the first MDD included that and iLife '06) because it couldn't verify the hard drive. Fortunately, I had so little on the drive, I backed it up to one of the spare 60GBs by putting them both in the second MDD and using Carbon Copy Cloner (great app!).
With the Maxtor on the ATA66 bus, I could re-install OS X, so I did. I did the Archive & Install so as not to have to deal with migrating user data. First thing I noticed when it rebooted into a fresh 10.4.3 was the CPU temperature at 60°C! As far as I know, these particular PPC chips max at 62. I freaked. I shut the machine down and let it sit for several hours before booting back up and patching to 10.4.7 and re-installing the Developer tools (and patching those to Xcode 2.4). This was a problematic process, interestingly.
My system is now back to the way it was pre-mod and though it's working a lot better, it will still occassionaly hard crash/freeze. Is this a kernel panic? When I shut it down and then boot back up it tells me I can send a report to Apple, but rarely does it show me the report.
Here're the things I think could be problematic or just some possible ideas:
1. I was under the impression that the 167MHz bus would recognize PC2700 speeds, but all my fast RAM shows as PC2600, which isn't even a real speed. This worries me a bit, as slower RAM doesn't play nicely with the faster bus.
2. The Acbel PSU doesn't have enough output. I believe it's 360W max (what an odd value). I changed all the fans to be quieter (and thus slower), but the 120mm main case fan had to run off of one of the 12V power leads since it uses too much power to go off the mobo's 2-pin lead meant for said 120mm fan. I also added two 60mm behinds the heatsink which are on a fan controller (also hooked up to one of the 12V leads - I only have one HDD and one optical drive, so there're lots of leads). I also plan on putting a Radeon 9800 Pro in, but now I wonder if this PSU just can't handle the added pull from the OCed bus (and CPUs) and extra fans (not to mention slightly more power-hungry 120mm fan).
3. The PC3200 RAM's 2-3-2-5 timings don't sit well with the system. The MDDs should be able to handle both CL2 memory and a 2x1GB config according to developer documentation for them.
4. I messed up the ATA100 bus during the modding, though with nothing attached to it, I don't see why this should be an issue.
5. Repeatedly opening and closing the case has weakened the thermal paste and I need to re-attach the heatsink. I doubt this is true, but you never know.
6. The PSU is over-heating? I know they get really hot and I'm in agreement with other modders that the MDD design is not thermally officient.
7. The CPUs are overheating. Temperature Monitor, post-mod and not including the post-OS X reinstall temp reading, has yet to show these CPUs hit 60°C. They get to the mid 50's no problem, and in fact, get to the high 40s very fast (and then VERY slowly rise to the mid 50s from there). Overall, then, the system is warmer than it was pre-mod, which I find odd considering the better heatsink and extra fans.
8. These processors just aren't 100% stable at 1.08GHz. It's possible if you consider the way processors are made and why they get clocked to the speeds they get clocked to. Or...
9. The whole CPU board needs more voltage, which would require some more soldering.
Lastly, this machine seems to, since the mod, be cursed by the PowerMac G4 "No Sleep For You!" Bug. No matter how you put it to sleep or wake it up, only the fans kick in on wake-up and none of the rest of the system. Holding the power button shuts it down, and after booting it tells me I can send an error report to Apple, and again it only occassionaly shows me said report. My father has a un-modded 733MHz Digital Audio G4 that can't sleep and my un-modded Dual 867 MDD can't sleep (it wakes up, then hard crashes about 5 seconds later).
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Not to knock the fine folks at MacMod.com, but I haven't been getting the kind of feedback on all of this I was hoping for there.
Here're my machine stats (pulled from an error log):

A few people out there have assured me that if I don't max out the system in terms of add-ons and things, the PSU should be more than adequate. I have 1x fan controller, 1x HDD, 1x optical drive, 1x graphics card in AGP slot that doesn't require an extra 12V power lead, no PCI cards, only two sticks of RAM, an overclocked system bus, and one fan hooked to a 12V lead rather than its 2-pin connection on the mobo (after discovering it doesn't run on said 2-pin connection). I've also taken out the case speaker to allow air to be pulled in through the top of the case.
I plan on adding two more fans to the fan controller (it can support 4). These fans will go at the bottom front of the case (under the face plate) and run at low speeds just to make sure the process of air flowing through the lower case starts off strong. So, two 60mm fans start it, the 120mm fan forces it past the heatsink (though as many probably know, not the whole heatsink - what a great design...), and then the two 60mm's behind the heatsink pull hot air out of the case.
Thanks for the info about System Profiler, Malcolm. I think you're right, though - if the CPUs were overheating, it would shut down. That's the whole point of the TAU's or whatever they're called.
I'm starting to think that either the 2-3-2-5 PC3200 RAM is suspect, or the processors are not stable at 1.08GHz. I'd downclock them back to 867MHz, but I think I need to buy some surface-mount resistors for that, and I really don't know what kind to get (as in, how many ohms).

  • MBP 2011 - Hard freezes, Kernel Panics & .kext errors??

What the ******* is up with the new models of MBP? I got mine in early May and tried to install Windows 7. After a successful installation the system was rebooting and I just got a hard freeze. A grey screen, much like the old blue screens on windows machines... What´s that about?
After a re-install I just got to installing some of my other software which I always used on all other macs I owned before. After 3-5 different programs I got an error message saying that a file called something like "...io... kext" could not be read and had to be re-installed??? Just as I was copying my stuff after the 3rd install this happened again, but this time with a completely different program. I have a new MBP with original DVD-install discs and everything...
Anyone had any similar things happen to them??
Seems to be a software error, since the same configuration has existed earlier with the i5 processor. Although this version is the 13"...
    Some things I already tried:
    1. Installing with no other partitions but a whole HFS+ (Journaled)
    2. Updated SMC and Boot-rom to latest versions using Apple automatic updates
    3. Updated all 3rd party applications to their latest versions
    4. Only original softwares installed
    Hardware Specs:

    Please help....

Some people report no problems using 1600MHz RAM on a system that is supposed to use 1333MHz RAM but you may be the exception to that as others have reported similar problems.
I would return the RAM and get the 1333MHz that is speced for your system. Even though it may pass memory tests, it's really not the right RAM for your computer.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

    so what
    greetings from berlin

    Greetings,
It appears to be a FW problem, possibly flaky case, or drive problem.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • IChat video problems are causing kernel panics, I think..

After experiencing some of the same freezing problems others have had with IChat after the 10.5.5 update, I started getting frequent kernel panics and OS X hang/freezes. I thought these were unrelated. After a full erase/format/reinstall/update, I had no problems for three days. Then I ran video IChat. Video froze...and 10 minutes later the OSX freezes/kernel panics are back. Coincidence?

Boomer, perhaps I'll give give a more detailed description of my problem. My MBP,is an 06 model, 2.4GHz Intel Core Duo/4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (original installed thru Apple @ purchase), running Mac OS X 10.5.5 (9F33). I've tested my RAM several times using memtest via an external boot drive in single-user mode with no errors. I've run AHT multiple times and encountered a single video error (-03). I sent it to Apple (yes, I have Apple Care), and was told it was void of warranty for a small dent in the back left corner resulting in logic board damage. (Complete and utter crap, considering the internal framework would protect the logic board from being damaged from such a superficial wound to the super-malleable tinfoil that surrounds this model of MBP). I believe that no testing took place at Apple. Faced with peril of paying $1200.00+ dollars to fix a undiagnosed problem, I thought I'd take a shot at self-diagnosis, with the help of experienced Apple owners. You, my friends, are my last line of defense.
    Truly,
    - Chris

  • IMac keeps freezing - kernel panics and other

My iMac keeps freezing on me. Sometimes I get a notice that my computer experience a kernel panic and upon restart have the option of sending the info to Apple, other times it just feezes and I have to do a hard restart but get no prompts about the improper shutdown. This usually happens when I'm working in Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects at the same time.
Am I just overloading the system? And if so, why would it allow me to do that? Shouldn't it just run really slowly or have one application freeze, not the entire system? This hasn't been a problem in the past, it just recently started happening more and more often. Do I need more Ram? That's pretty much the only thing I can upgrade. Here are my system specs, please let me know if you have any suggestions for things I can do to prevent this from happening again. Thank you!

Thanks for the replies. Baltwo I'll try running those test and see if they find anything.

  • MacBook Pro freeze/kernel panic while playing World of Warcraft

Hello, Is anyone else having a similar issue I'm having? I have not had a single problem with my macbook pro until I reinstalled World of Warcraft. When I login to the game, the system will freeze, screen goes black, sound jitters, no keyboard or mouse response, and I have to hard reboot the system by holding down the power button. To make matters more difficult sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. This only happens when I'm running WoW...I also have StarCraft 2 installed (another graphics/processor intensive game) and I never had this problem.
I read in the forums already about freezing issues and ran the Apple Hardware Test just to check the basics. Report came back clean (granted, I didn't run the full scan, just the quick test).
Below is my kernel panic report...any thoughts?

    Hi and Welcome!
It may help if we know the variant of your MBP. Some have serious video chipset issues that can complicate troubleshooting. Do "About this Mac..." from the Apple menu, then click "More Info..." in the resulting window. This opens System Profiler and, on its opening pane, is a complete description of your variant as "Hardware Overview." Copy/paste that info here, BEING SURE to omit your serial number. I'm on one of our older Macs now but the info should roughly parallel this format:
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: Power Mac G4
    Machine Model: PowerMac3,6
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 1.75 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.4.8f2
    Serial Number: /deleted/
The second line, which under Snow Leopard reads "Model Identifier" will uniquely call out your variant for us.
Those with the second line of Profiler stating "MacBookPro3,1" or "MacBookPro4,1" are subject to a Repair Extension Program for a defective video chipset.
If the identifier is 5,1 or greater, your computer is covered in the forums for newer MBPS here:

  • Black flickering, freezing, kernel panics

    Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me out.  My 2009 13" MBP seems to be having some issues and I can't fingure out what's going on.
Every now and then, the lower half of the screen will flash black repeatedly.  This has happened in Safari in full screen and in Sketchbook Pro.  While in SBP, the image will usually disappear, replaced with grey.  I can usually still save the image, quit the app and reload.  If it happens in Safari, the flashing will happen breifly, then the image will sort of stutter and spit and go crazy.  When this happens, I have to hard start my computer.
A sort of similar thing happens when I play StarCraft 2.  Once the game starts, at random intervals, the game will freeze.  Sometimes, this is preceded by the black flickering on the bottom half of the screen. Sometimes, it is not.  I spoke with Blizzard about it and, after having me trouble shoot a few things, they determined that I was having kernel panics.
Since updating today to 10.8.3, the Sarai issue seems to have fixed itself (so far).  I haven't tried SBP yet but StarCraft remains unplayable.  I had a full on kernel panic while the game was updating, and then a system freeze when I tried to play them game.  No log from the freeze but I have included the kernel log below.
Now, I did update both the HDD and the RAM not too long ago. I'm not certain if there is any relation but I bought PNY 8 GB (two 4 GB) 1333 MHz DDR3.  It shows up in my "About This Mac" and I did a hardware test that confirmed the RAM is OK.
I've searched the forum and I don't know if anyone is having this issue but I'm hoping someone can help me.  I'm outside the warrenty and I don't know what to do.  I don't know how to read the kernel panic log.
    Thanks

You're welcome - Macs are very picky about RAM, particularly the speed of the RAM. I'm surprised to learn that you 'got by' with no kp's for four months! Oh, and just as a buying suggestion... I would shop the Crucial, Corsair or OWC websites for RAM - they guarantee Mac compatibility. As a matter of fact, go to the Crucial site and click on the System Scanner tab and download the small app that will report back to Crucial your model and suggest a RAM upgrade path for you.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

What's the problem with this machine?
I've run the diagnostic software from apple. And it says that everything is allright.
    No errors.

    Question????
    where you running leopard???
if so that file should be there.
now for your problem and i hate to tell you this.
it might be a power supply issue the 1.8 ghz g5's where known for the capaciters going out on the power supply due to a cheap capaciter.
    first sign this is happening
    1. freezing/kernal panics
    2. the nasty black box of death that says please restart your computer.
    solution.
    new power supply
    problem
support cycle has ended for powerpc based macintoshes finding a power supply is not easy and expensive to boot

  • Apple's own ipad Photos app has hard crashed (kernel panic?) the iPad twice

Not so bad that it has to be reloaded from a backup, but bad enough that it takes forever to boot from the reset. All I did was flick through the photos super fast, and crash.. I have 433 photos BTW.. Others should try it..

There are a lot of things I could call Apple, but if I said them they'd surely remove me from the forums. There is no excuse for this, I'm a programmer, I know that there is no reason they can't give an account for every app I purchased or downloaded from their store.
You can get a listing of every App you purchased, downloaded for free, as well as each update to these Apps from the iTunes Store. Simply use iTunes to go to your account and then select "Purchase History". This will give you a list of all your activity by date with order number, invoice number, and content of each order with prices. The detail for each order shows the name, the creator, the type and the price for each item in a purchase. This applies to music and other purchases from iTunes as well.
You are also sent an e-mail invoice with this information shortly after you make a purchase.
And offer a support board so they don't have to hire technical support. This is probably how they reduce the cost of making the devices. But you'd think by now they would have the money to spend on some proper infrastructure.
Apple has a large technical support group both in-store and on-line. These forums are for users to help other users not to replace the need for Apple support.
It would help to investigate what you are talking about before posting a rant. For example, you could have asked the question about purchase history here and someone would have helped you.

  • All of a sudden I get artifacts, freezes, kernel panics program crashes. What happening

I have a 24"imac Intel running Lion. All of a sudden I am havin all sorts of problems and I can't find a solution. I have repaired disk and permissions using install disk, done a hardware test, reinstalled Lion and restored with Time Machine, reset pram etc. Everything checks out. Disk Utility syas MacHD apprears to be fine. ***? Sorry, just out of ideas. And I'm out of Applecare.  Help!

I was suggesting you run the test again. Sounds like it might the graphics chip going south. I think if you bring it in to Apple, there is no charge for diagnosis. But call ahead to confirm that. If it is the GPU, it will mean the logic board and that won't be cheap. But might not be that.

  • Kernel Panics, OS X exits, Sleep problems

After reading through ALOT of the posts here it seems that many of us are experiencing alot of the same problems. Unfortunately I seem to have had a lot of them together. My MBP is currently back the second time for repairs and is "waiting on parts". Apparently the motherboard is being replaced this time. I am very suspicious that this may all be tied to the airport wireless since thats always up and running and connected to my Linksys AP. This should be interesting when I finally get it back.
    Problems include:
    Several Kernel Panics a day
MBP not "automatically" going into sleep mode
When set to "automatically" go into sleep after a period of time, and approximately an hour passes, the MBP cannot be woken up...I don't believe its' really sleeping but the screen is blank, BUT the light is not strobing on the front indicating true sleep mode.
Shorter than expected battery life even though the battery is not on the recall list. (based on serial #).
This is my first experience with a Mac and I have to say I am a bit surprised at the type of issues I am having since Apple seems to tout the stability of their Macs.
    Thoughts anyone??
    MBP 15 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2GB 3rd party RAM

If you are getting several kernel panics a day, the machine or something about it is broken.
You can probably just call apple and get them to fix it, but there are a few troubleshooting steps you might want to take.
First off, disconnect any external FW or USB periphs, and take out any RAM that you may have added after market. See if it still dies.
You will probably want to try a system software re-install, because Apple will, and if you have tried it first, they will not waste the time. Further, a bad install can cause problems like this. Since that does take a few hours, though, you might want to see if the problems happen using just apple apps, and using just apple apps in a plain user account created from scratch. If they do, then you should try a system software re-install. Do an archive install, and do not move any of your old pref panes and startup software over just yet.
Assuming it still dies, then you are ready to call Apple and get them to fix it. MBPs should not crash several times a day with a kernel panic. I have run one of my machines for months without a CP. Another one does have this problem, and it is going to go in to AppleCare as soon as I can spare it for a few days.

  • Any screen problems or kernel panics on the new 2011 mac air? Help!

I want to buy a macbook air but i now that the old one (2010 late) has some problems - screen flickering, kernel panics and eventually death. I want the new ait but also i want a computer to work fine, not with problems. Thanks guys.

reinstalled the OS from the original CD with the wireless USB adapter attached and got a kernel panic, while booted from the original Mac install CD...
Apple states that no external devices are can be attached to the Macbook when doing an install. I suggest an SMC reset and then reinstall your system exactly according to Apple guidelines. When you get to the point of wanting to attach your wireless USB device - don't. It's entirely possible there are issues with the system and this USB product that have not been documented.

  • G3 ibook kernel panics in 10.3.9

Hi, I'm trying to revive my old G3 ibook dual usb - it had run fine in OS X (10.3.9) for a couple of years (after replacing the hard drive) - but suddenly started getting freezes/kernel panics etc. I changed the ram - did complete erase and installs and all the usual things - resetting the pram/vram etc. but without success - the display is fine - so I'm assuming the logic board is ok. The odd thing is that OS 9.2.2 works fine with no problems - so hardware doesn't seem to be an issue.
Any suggestions? It's a shame to dump it as it's still very useful - though using OS 9 is rather limiting.
    Barry S

    Hi Ronda,
It was your advice some years ago that saved this ibook from the trash by suggesting I replace the hard drive - so thanks for that. The original CDs - yes I do have (OS 9.1 - 4 CDs) - which I've used successfully to restore it.
In answer to your question - yes I believe the 3 x OS 10.3 install discs are the retail version. The ibook is 500MHz. Optical drive is a CD-RW CRX 700E - driver version 1.4.7.
It came with a 256MB ram module - which I replaced with a 512MB module - I have tried swapping these - as I know some kernel panics can be caused by bad ram - but still the same. When it's running on 10.3.9 it sometimes even freezes when booting from the start up disk.
This may just be my imagination but it does appear hotter running on 10.3.9 rather than OS 9.22.
As I said in my post, it did run fine for a couple of years - so these freezes and kernel panics are a bit of a mystery.

  • Help With Kernel Panic in Mid 2012 13" Macbook Pro

    I have a 13" Mid-2012 Macbook Pro.
    2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 / 8GB Memory
    OS X 10.9.5
Recently I have been getting kernel panics / grey screens of death.  From the Console logs, it appears I have had four kernel panics since September 22.
I am not aware of any particular thing I can do to produce the error.
    Some things I've tried:
Disk Utility (this generally returns no errors.  However, once it asked me to boot to recovery mode to run Disk Utility there)
Disk Utility in recovery mode (No errors)
single user mode fsck -fy (No errors)
Apple Hardware Test, extended mode (No errors)
Observed Console logs for kernel panics (I am not sure how to parse these)
    Other details about the setup/environment:
    No peripherals
I did see one update About the OS X Mavericks v10.9.5 Update that I had not installed until tonight.  Since September 22, I have installed 3 such updates.
    No anti-virus
    Hard drive is mostly empty
    File Vault is on
I hope this is not poor form but I thought I would post some snippets from my kernel panic logs here to help with assessment.    I removed some information that looked like it might include personal identifiers and also the "loaded kexts" portions because of their length.   If those are helpful I could post them.
Any help diagnosing this problem would be appreciated.

Thank you.  below I have included the full panic logs, including kernel extensions.
I did run and pass a memory test last night, but thank you for noting that this may not be conclusive.
Do you see anything else notable in the logs, that would suggest anything other than a memory problem?  What would be the best way to test it?  Last night I used Rember .  Assuming that you don't identify anything else, would the next step be simply memory replacement?
    Logs below.
    Thanks!

  • Kernel panics, crashes and other issues

    hi all -
i've been reading through tons of posts over the last week about my issue and trying to resolve it but can't seem to get my machine up and running consistently.
it started crashing consistently on jan 10 - suspiciously the day the itunes update came out - and i have since run the fixes people posted relating to that update to no avail.
i keep getting kernel panics - while i'm running photoshop, safari, word, textedit, ical, etc. i took it to a mac authorized repair shop, but they gave it back to me saying they couldn't duplicate the issue described. it started happening again right away - i unplugged everything except the keyboard and mouse. still got them. have run disk utility from the startup disks several times.
one thing i noticed was it seems to repair the same problem every time - "invalid extent entry". i found a post on this board that said only disk warrior can fix that problem in 10.3.9. disk utility says it fixes it, but it comes up every time...
also - after i downloaded and ran onyx it seemed to be better for the last two days. and then today i plugged my scanner in and tried using it. it crashed photoshop and then everything else started crashing even though i unplugged the scanner. i tried looking for a driver update for it, but os 10 couldn't open the file i downloaded from epson - which was:
TWAIN Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v2.65A
    Macintosh OS X (v10.2.x - 10.3.x)
    epson11385.sea.hqx - 34.2MB - posted on 04/18/05
a window popped up that said the file didn't appear to be compressed and i should get more information from the manufacturer. i read on this forum that bad drivers can cause kernel panics, but i can't seem to load the update. i also trashed my epson printer driver for good measure.
    1) so my first question is: could the invalid extent entry problem be causing kernel panics? or are the two unrelated? should i definitely download disk warrior to fix that?
    2) also something i haven't been clear about regarding repairing permissions - do you have to boot from another drive to repair permissions? my internal drive is my startup disk, and i don't have a bootable external drive. i tried repairing permissions with onyx, but it crashes every time. is this because i need to boot from another disk? how do you do that and run onyx?
    3) has anyone had the problem with panther not opening the epson 4870 driver update?
i've been trying to solve this for weeks...i'm about to swear off technology altogether and move to the mountains.
thanks for any suggestions you might have!

You are doing fine. Don't beat up on yourself (bad ram will do pleanty of that by itself).
Until you get the ram figured out there is no hope for a stable system. If you have bad ram then it will corrupt the system as fast as you can repair it.
If you have the hardware test disk it has a ram tester that can, depending on the system and disk, run in extended(on the menu) or looped mode(command l). It usually reports which stick of ram is bad. On a desktop this is a big deal.
On a laptop it is much easier. You usually have a limited number of ram slots. I don't know what mac you are running because you have not filled out any of the info for your profile.
Pull all but one stick of ram and run on the other to see if that helps. If no change, run on the other stick and see if that helps. If all the ram is non Apple then it could be either. Apple ram is usually, but not always, good ram that stays good. By the way, with the dry weather we are having it is important not to risk static zapping of your mac. The easiest way to ground yourself is to be bare foot then touch the power supply case or other metal interior surface of the computer before tackling the electronics.
I like Crucial Ram but OWC also has a lifetime guarantee and they stand behind the ram. If the vendor of replacement ram has a bench tester then that is the best you can do without putting the ram in your mac.
Once you get good ram in your mac then concentrate on the system. In my opinion, Disk Warrior is the only utility that one needs to purchase for X. It can keep fixing your directory but if the ram is bad X will keep getting corrupted again.
That the permissions are not running off of disk is, yes, a bad sign.
    When the ram is replaced;
If you have a backup hard drive I'd make sure that it has, at a minimum, all your user data. You can also do this with cd/dvd's.
Reformat the hard drive and zero it to map out bad blocks. The system and applications can be reloaded later and your user data can be imported to the clean, new system. That is what I would make my mind up on doing.
It may be possible to keep your current system running with good ram and Disk Warrior but the odds are that some files have been corrupted and will rear their ugly heads in the future.
    Just my 2 cents.
