Hi,
I have just got myself a new PC with Windows 7 (64bits). Using IE 8 (32 bit version), I am unable to download emails attachments from my normal Yahoo account ([email protected]). I have read somewhere that this could be due to the fact that Yahoo uses Norton as antivirus scan for email attachments, and that this could clash with BT NetProtectPlus (McAfee under the bonnet). Is there an option I need to switch off (and if so which one / how) in BT NetProtectPlus in order for me to be able to download attachments via Yahoo mail ?
Please note that this used to work on my previous PC (Windowx XP).
Thanks for your help. This is getting really frustrating !
Hi. Welcome to the forums.
To be honest, there would not really be a clash between the products you've mentioned, because the online system using Norton is a server system and actioned before any download. There is possibly an option in BTNetprotect for "email scanning" or similar. This option can be turned off in the general case, since disk writes are covered anyway,
Have you tried another browser (e.g. Firefox, Opera or Safari) to see if the same conditions exist ?
Is there any particular error message or delay you are seeing ?

• Why does Reader XI download email attachments to my Download folder before I am able to print them?

After last update my Reader XI automatically downloads email attachments (.pdf) to my Downloads folder. I then have to open that file in order to print it.  Before, the attachment would open in Reader and I could print from that direct.

Windows 8, Firefox email client.  What happens is that I click on attachment links in emails, which are .pdf files.  Instead of a menu allowing opening of the file with Reader, the file gets automatically downloaded to my Downloads folder.  I then have to open that folder, click on the file name... then Reader opens and I can view the file as well as print it from the Reader menu.

• VPN:  Unable to see server files, download Email attachments

I recently installed the Apani Contivity VPN client in order to connect my home iMac with my company's servers. The Apani product was the client specified by my company. I can access the company's servers, but cannot see individual files. According to my company's IT department, this is because my company uses Microsoft's Distributed File System, whick OS X is unable to access. Has anyone else had similar problems and know of a workaround? In what may be a related matter, when I connect through VPN to my company Email account, I am unable to open or download message attachments. I have used both Entourage and Thunderbird Email programs, again as recommended by my IT department. Can anyone offer any advice here?
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hmm.
I'm going to defer this to someone more adept at VPN's,
but it sure sounds like permissions that aren't set properly on the server.
Don't let your techies off the hook too easily.
And as far as the attachments...is this using an email client, after you've made the VPN connection...on the 'inside'?
(what kind of attachments, did you say? Word, pdf?)
If you can't see files in those folders, there's a probability that you don' t have "permissions" to run the programs associated with the attachments.
See why it sure looks like it's falling back on your network gurus.

• Automator workflow to download email attachments in a daily created folder

dear forum participants and apple experts: i have created an intelligent mailbox in apple mail in which mail from a certain sender which has been sent on a certain day (normally today) is filed. Would it be possible to create an automator/apple script file to download all attachments these files contain into a specific folder and to label that folder with the date (thus today's date).
I have succeeded in downloading attachments in a folder that was automatically labed with the date by using the email filter (without the detour of an intelligent mailbox) and despite the filter setting for a specific date, it always downloaded all attachments from all the dates the specfic sender has sent emails

First try to do the same tasks in Safe Mode:
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
* Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
;
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

• Name/type of downloaded email attachments is changed to attachment.ashx or something similar

I access an email account at the site below which provides Microsoft Outlook Web access. Since the last Firefox update to version 8.0, the true name/type of email attachments that I download is changed to attachment.ashx (or attachment1.ashx etc if there are several downloaded files. This is very inconvenient. Note that the problem does not exist when downloading attachments from aol.com. There is also no problem when I use IE as browser. Version/system details below are correct.

Outlook Web Access sends an illegal Content-Dispositon header to Firefox. This is no longer allowed in Firefox 8. Firefox 9 will have a workaround for this so that Microsoft has time to fix their software.<br>

• Unable to download emails

I have a G5 and a MacBook, both running OS 10.4.8 and both using Mail 2.1. I have a number of email accounts, and all work perfectly on the MacBook. However one of them recently refuses to download emails on the G5, in spite of the fact that the account details are identical on both computers. How can this be?
When I go to Get Mail on the G5, the Activity Viewer indicates that it is "Fetching New Mail" and that it is "Preparing to Retrieve Messages", but never gets further than that. Connection Doctor indicates green buttons on all the Accounts.
Account info shows 188 messages (all Sender unknown) and all with blue dot (unread).
I have tried Disk Uitility/Repair permissions. I have tried removing and re-instating the malevolent Account in Mail, dumping the Mail Preferences, clearing out unwanted old emails, even dumping the complete ~/Library/Mail folder.
I have checked System Preferences/Network/Network Port configurations/ (all in correct order), Mail/Accounts/Advanced/ (all boxes checked).
Any ideas?

I’ve seen something like this reported before and I couldn’t figure out what the problem was. Given that it has started recently, can you think of anything you did that could have a bearing on this?
Do you have any Mail plug-ins or system utilities that could interfere with Mail? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
/Library/StartupItems/
/Library/InputManagers/
~/Library/InputManagers/
/Library/Mail/Bundles/
~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
Also, open Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. What do you see there?
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

• Trouble downloading email attachments

Can anyone enlighten me as to why all of a sudden (about a couple of months ago) email attachments such as pictures, wmv files and slides won't open any more. It looks as if the files are downloading but instead of then opening and playing, nothing happens. The black slideshow box opens and indicates however many pictures there are, but it just goes round in circles and remains black. Grateful for any help.

No luck unfortunately
I turned off all the security preferences I could (Filevault, waking the computer with password etc), except for the master password, and I still am having the same problem of my email attachments not downloading.
While using Stellar Phoenix Demo to try and recover my deleted files,I had to create a new account, one for myself and one for the Root. Could creating either of these possibly have an effect? I know how stupid that sounds but the separate accounts and the master password being set are the only two options left that I can't change and I'm still having problems downloading attachements.

• Unable to download emails. No signon.remember line in prefs.js file

i have 4 email accounts in mozilla thunderbird. unable to download or send emails. looks as through the passwords for all 4 accounts are deleted.
Could not locate user_pref("signon.rememberSignons", false); in the prefs.js file.

Item 1. The ability to access gmail in a browser proves only one thing. You know the password. Nothing else.
Item 2. Your reference to the prefs.js file sounds like your reading instructions for Versions prior to 1 whewn the config editor was introduced.
Item 3. General internet browsing in done on ports 80 and 443 (SSL) Mail is done on Ports 110, 995, 143, 993, 25, 26,587 and 465. So being able to browse the internet does not mean that Thunderbird can get out there.
Item 4. Crist1 is correct that Thunderbird will ask for a password if it is required. The fact it is not indicates it is not even getting out to the internet.
Now the common reasons Gmail stops working are.
a) Two factor authentication is enabled at Googles behest but no application password is generated for Thunderbird. They forget to tell people that bit.
b) You do not have "access for less secure apps" enabled in your gmail profile.
c) IMAP or POP access has been disabled in the gmail profile.
d) Your anti virus is blocking mail because it has decided to. Disable email scanning or better still reboot into Windows safe mode with networking and see if it works then
e) Anti virus /Firewall is blocking Thunderbird or the ports needed to access mail.
f) New modem / Router / wifi extender that blocks ports that the old one did not.

• Having a Problem downloading Email Attachments

In the last month or so (probably late July early August), I have started having problems with email attachments and I have changed no settings.  I have them set to save to my card and the size is set to Maximum in the email settings on both of my email accounts AND there is plenty of room on both the phone memory and my card.  Most of them will not DOWNLOAD to the phone.  I get a list of the attachments with the attachment name and the download arrow with an exclamation point and when I try to re-download they still won't download.  This is becoming a major hinderance for my work because I am expected to be able to read these.  Simple text documents, word doc's, excel spreadsheets, pdf's.  On the same email from 9/12 I have a .doc and a .pdf that did download and another .pdf that did NOT.  HAS THERE BEEN SOME DOCUMENT SIZE CHANGE or some other change that is causing this???  I rarely if ever had this happen before.  Please help me...very frustrated.

dlcooper, that sounds frustrating!  I'd love to help.  What specific application are you using to download and view the email attachments?  Let me suggest resetting the application.  http://bit.ly/Rjsdjr  Retest and let me know how it works out for you.  Thanks!

• Cannot download email attachments windows 7 lion bootcamp MacBook Pro.

I cannot download or upload email attachments with windows 7 on lion bootcamp. Attached files such as xxx.doc,  yyyy.jpg, or zzz.txt  erroneously try to download as *icloud* and of course fail. By * I mean alphanumeric string. icloud mail tries to download perfectly good files as gibberish. On my mac lion side the mail function works fine. On the bootcamp side all non-icloud mail functions and browser functions work fine. I can easily send, forward, reply to and receive icloud mail. The only thing wrong is that I cannot sucessfully unload or download icloud email attachments.

• How it can download email attachments automatically?

I want to have my email attachments automatically downloaded from the server. Outlook does it.
please advice how it could be done?

If you enable View/Display Attachments Inline, picture, html and text attachments will automatically be downloaded and shown below the message body. For other file types, you have to do it manually, although it is possible to create a filter that saves attachments to an external folder.

Ok..So you mean still cannot accessing the website with Internet connection? Try to use nslookup in command prompt to check whether can resolve domain name correctly. Also make sure you can ping the router's LAN IP from computer.
If not, you can try to use the following DNS servers from OpenDNS.com:
208.67.220.220
208.67.222.222

• Am I the only one having difficulties with aol on my iPod touch? I can't download email attachments *videos n stuff* is this just me?

Like it will stop in the middle of extraction and say unable to download attachment server connection failed, I've reset my iPod multiple times, is there a bug in the servers or is this just me? Help I really need answers plz.....ps I just upgraded to ios 5, but is this me or mmain aol servers?

You need to reopen that case file for your initial problem and get that resolved. That's the first thing.
The second thing (the download times) can easily be checked out while you are at the Apple Store (as a test you do yourself). Find a couple of large apps (like maybe approaching 1 GB) in which you don't have any personal data in them, and delete them from your iPad. Then redownload them and see how long it takes at the Apple Store.
If it's quick and normal at the Apple Store, then you've got so,e problem with the iPad working right with your home WiFi, and you'll have to sort that out. If it's just as slow at the Apple Store, then you can open up case file on that issue while you are still in the Apple Store.
