Post-RSS... no more shut downs but fans are freaking out

Ever since I got my MacBook back from having the heatsink replaced, the fans have been unusually noisy. This morning, after starting my computer from sleep mode, I opened MS Word. Now the fans sound like a little jet engine and they've been running at (what sounds like a) high speed ever since. I closed down all the programs I was running which in the past would make the fans slow down. But this time, the fans have been running for over 45 minutes.
I wonder if this is related to the latest Office update. This is the first time I've opened Word since doing the Office update over the weekend.
Any clues?

Is it ur Macbook obviously hotter than before? Normally if your fan sounds like a jet engine that means ur CPU temp has exceeded the threshold value (the default threshold should be ~70C) so the fan cranks itself up to maximum, which is abnormal if you just got a new heatsink.
1st of all, check ur activity monitor to see if there is any process that's using a lot of CPU power constantly. If yes, just quit that process or uninstall the corresponding program, this should solve the problem. If none, you can download a program called "SMC fanControl":
http://81.169.182.62/~eidac/software/page5/page5.html
This program shows you the current fan speed and the CPU temperature. Run it after you boot into the OSX and then use the computer the way you always do but monitor the temperature and fan speed change in SMC fanControl. The average temp under regular use should not exceed 60C. If the temp climbs up too fast, it's not normal and u should call AppleCare.

  • Laptop shutting down? Fan overheating?

    Hi all.
I have read many topics on this forum about the fan on any laptop not working, the laptop overheating or the laptop seemingly randomly shutting down.
I have had this problem for about three months. I tried propping up the laptop so the fan (stupidly positioned on the middle of the base of the laptop!!) could get air. It didn't shut down, but it was ridiculous having to prop my laptop up everywhere I went, and fan was also ridiculously loud.
I took my laptop to a doctor and it turns out there was a fault with the chip on the motherboard that controls the fan. This caused the fan not to work properly, causing overheating, and the laptop shutting down.
I got it fixed and my laptop is now nice and quiet and I don't have to prop it up and it doesn't shut down.
Sorry if this is bad news! Hope you can get your laptops fixed!!

  • My macbook pro (late 2008) shuts down but battery is at 25-30%

My macbook pro (late 2008) shuts down but battery is at 25-30% and I don't get a low power warning box before this happens.  This only happens when the power chord is not connected, and it restarts with no problems once I put the power chord in. Does this mean I need a new battery, or is it an indication of something else? Using osx 10.5.8

Mine is Unibody 15" MBP late 2008, with the exact problem as yours. It can be a sudden shut down at 25-32%, or, after upgrading to OS 10.7.2, can be hang all of sudden on battery power.
Condition on, "Replace Soon". From 4.5 - 6 hours when new, goes down to 1 - 2 hours on discrete graphics.
But after 'abusing' it for the first year in the heat of Jakarta's climate in a non AC room when doing a video editing, before moving back to a comfort AC room at home sweet home, the battery performance is still top notch comparing to other kind than Apple. Also, it caused me to replace the right fan, after a lot of hard work on that first year. Oh, and by the way, I regularly done the battery calibration, at least once or twice between 3-6 months.

    Hello vina8sy,
After reviewing your post, it sounds like the iPhone will turn off after a sync but the iPad will not. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • My Firefox 20 seems to not shut down but only restart. Also, rather than my home page, the last pages visited appear.

It's as if Firefox 20.0 never shuts down but only restarts.
Even when I close Firefox 20.0 by clicking the X button on the top right or use "exit," when I open Firefox, it acts the same as if I'd used "restart," namely the tabs don't load until I click on them. Furthermore, the 4 pages I use as my home pages aren't there but rather whatever pages I had up when I last closed my browser.
I have tried creating a new profile, which worked ONE TIME. Then, it went back to my problem.
I have used "restore" to go back to a time before the problem started but that hasn't worked.
I removed the addon I had downloaded in that time period but that didn't help, either.
Thank you for any help you can give. I know you're all volunteers and your time is important.

Does it seem like that Firefox is crashing? Try checking if there are any crash reports by going to about:crashes in your browser. Alternatively you can try safe mode as outlined below:
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''

  • My computer shuts down but the restart feature will not work. It just hangs.

    Hello
    I have a MS6547 version 1 (645 Ultra Motherboard)
The problem I am having is that my computer will not restart. If I press the power off button in windows it will shut down but the restart windows function will not work it just hangs at (Windows is shutting down)
I zero'd my hard drive and installed a fresh copy of windows but the restart feature still doesn't work. Even when I was in the middle of installing windows when the computer says it will reboot in 15 second that hangs on restarting computer as well/
    Hope someone can help
    My spec is
    645 Ultra Motherboard
    2.2gb Pentium CPU
    256ddr2100 RAM
    ATI Radion Graphics Card
    60gb Hard Drive
    LG CDRW
    Please Help.

    Hello and welcome!
It sounds like it has a hard ware reason. I suggest you take the motherboard out, to see that there are no stand-offs/spacers/distanser left unused creating a short.
Also, remember to have as little hardware as possible when you install Windows. No extra PCI-cards, USB-devices and such.
If the system has worked well earlier, above still rules, but here are some many other reasons for the described symtoms:

  • Acts like it shuts down, but doesn't

ok, this is rather odd...i shut my PB down, to transport and such. i will give it a minute to make sure the screen goes black, fan stops, etc. then shut it and put it in it's case. when i come back to turn it on, the little white light at the bottom of the screen is doing it's dimming and brightening. and i move the mouse and the login screen pops up. i don't press the power button or anything, it's already on. could someone tell me why my computer won't turn completely off?

    Hi Alison,
Please describe the exact steps you take to "shut down" your PB. It sounds like it's merely sleeping, in which case it's behaving exactly as it should.
Two ways to completely shut down a PB are to press the power button or go to the Apple Menu and select shut down, and in both cases then follow the onscreen prompts. If you're already doing this and instead of shutting down it's going to sleep, troubleshooting is in order.

  • G4 shuts down but have to wait and manually restart

I suddenly have a problem where if I try to restart my G4 (running OSX 10.4 or OS9 - I have a dual boot with two hard drives) it shuts down but does not restart. If I try to start up immediately it just cuts out, and I need to wait about 5 min before I can get it to start up. I've replaced the battery and tried resetting the CHUD switch on the motherboard, but to no avail. Disc checks ok too.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A windows error message appears saying iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to shut down.
let's get a crash log from itunes, and send it to the Apple engineers for a look.
Typically, you'll need to configure Dr. Watson on your PC in order to generate crash logs. Windows start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return. At the prompt in the command line window that comes up, type in
    drwtsn32 -i
    And hit return.
This will create crash logs in Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\. There'll usually be a file in here called "drwtsn32.log"
prior to collecting the itunes crash log, delete any existing crash logs in there. (we want to make sure we send the correct crash log.)
Generate the crash, collect the crash log, and and send it as an attachment to this email address.
in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:
    - A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
    - The username you are using in the thread
    - The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
    - the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
    - A concise description of the issue you are seeing
    - The exact text of the error message you are seeing

  • Ipad mini is stuck on Apple Logo, have shut down but still won't reboot

Ipad mini is stuck on Apple Logo.  Have done a forced shut down, but when it starts up again its back to the apple logo - its not moving either

    Hi Bonney Fam,
Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
You mention that your iPad mini is stuck at the Apple logo after it shut down. If you haven't already, try resetting it again:
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
    From:
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If the iPad still doesn't start up past the Apple logo, try this method to reinstall iOS:
If your device gets stuck during startup
When starting up, you might see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen for a long time, or your device might restart again. Try these steps:
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
