Posted once, just making sure it's seen

So for my Networking Operating Systems class, we had to install Windows Server 2012 R2. Long story short, apparently I missed a crucial step and upgraded my Windows 8 to Windows Server smh. I have a Windows 8 disk and a hard drive to put my Windows.old
files on, but for some reason I can't see what's on or add anything to my external hard drive when it's plugged in. Is there a setting I need to change or something? All I'm trying to do is copy my old windows files so I can transfer it back on after I install
windows 8. Please advise

Hi,
Do you mean that you had reinstall the system on Windows 8 and upgraded it to Windows Server 2012 R2, then you cannot access the data on the external hard drive? If so, is there any error message when you open accee the date? Please also check if there is any
error on external hard drive in disk management.
Best Regards,
Mandy

What you are experiencing is 100% related to Malware.
Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

• 1.5 to 2.0: Just making sure

I have a licensed copy of 1.5 and my upgrade box of v2 sitting on my desk here. I did not download and run the v2 trial.
After I install v2, and I launch it for the first time it will automatically update my ENTIRE 1.5 library into v2. And that's it.
Is this correct? I have read the posts here but want to make sure.
Extra sure.
TIA

I just got my box. Looked around for the exact information you are. I couldn't find it so I did the following.
1)Updated my Vault. Backed it up.
2)Made a backup of my library.
3)Began the Ap2 install. I had a silly hang on putting in my system password. Ejected the install disk and installed the program.
4)restarted my computer. (old habbit after installs.)
5)Ap2 updated my library.
All in all seems almost perfect. Library is over 10,000 files. There were a few funny things with some smart albums acting odd but I just erased them and made new ones that worked fine. Some of my stacks seem to be acting funny. I have some that say 2of3 but when I open the stack there are only 2 versions. I haven't figured this one out yet.

• Just making sure...planning on upgrading to Leopard tomorrow......

I am planning on doing the upgrade. I have a Mac Pro Quad 3.0 Ghz...Logic 8, Motu 896HD, Waves Navtive Power Pack, Musicians Bundle, and SSL4000, Melodyne, and Auto Tune....I know my Autotune probably will not work, and probably Melodyne as well...thats fine. I think I read that if I upgrade my PACE then my Waves plugins will work and I am pretty sure my MOTU has Leopard drivers...wso it looks like I should be OK to do the upgrade....again, just double checking....anyone know a reason why I shouldnt?

Ableton Live does not suffer the same issues as Logic here, nor does Reason, Cubase I've not updated since SX2 so I can't tell.
I said that this issue has been seen with software I am testing which is not public yet, so all I'm trying to convey is that the same behavior will and does happen in other DAWs, whether you see it or not will depend on what you're running.
The buffer size makes zero difference to the CPU usage spikes, I'm pretty sure I explained all this already, I have the buffer at 1024 the project cuts out at the same point as at 64, any number of settings changes make no difference. Changing the "nice" setting for process priority only makes the issue worse to the point where the playhead wont even move before bringing up an error, there is plenty of memory and plenty of HD space the the drives it has access to are a 7k and 10k.
That's interesting about Nicing logic. I've noticed that while sometimes it can have a good effect, often it doesn't as it takes away from other plugs I use. For example if I am running BFD, Logic will choke quickly. I don't even have to play the track, I can just sit there and audition tracks and it will throw the system overload error. That very issue makes me think it's a threading issue. Now you might say that logic is not doing threading properly, and that may have some value, however, in Leopard developers don't have to write code to manage threads there is a feature in Leopard which takes care of that, and hence if that feature is buggy, it will make all threading apps have various issues. In our case with logic, it is heavily multi threaded and it becomes obvious... as it is with Ableton for example.
Make sense?
In fact I wonder if LOWERING the Nice in Logic doesn't help it more than hurt it But I now prefer to just let it do what it's gotta do.

• Best practice for lazy-loading collection once but making sure it's there?

I'm confused on the best practice to handle the 'setup' of a form, where I need a remote call to take place just once for the form, but I also need to make use of this collection for a combobox that will change when different rows in the datagrid or clicked. Easier if I just explain...
You click on a row in a datagrid to edit an object (for this example let's say it's an "Employee")
The form you go to needs to have a collection of "Department" objects loaded by a remote call. This collection of departments only should happen once, since it's not common for them to change. The collection of departments is used to populate a form combobox.
You need to figure out which department of the comboBox is the selectedIndex by iterating over the departments and finding the one that matches the employee.department.id
Individually, I know how I can do each of the above, but due to the asynch nature of Flex, I'm having trouble setting up things. Here are some issues...
My initial thought was just put the loading of the departments in an init() method on the employeeForm which would load as creationComplete() event on the form. Then, on the grid component page when the event handler for clicking on a row was fired, I call a setup() method on my employeeForm which will figure out which selectedIndex to set on the combobox by looking at the departments.
The problem is the resultHandler for the departments load might not have returned (so the departments might not be there when 'setUp' is called), yet I can't put my business logic to determine the correct combobox in the departmentResultHandler since that would mean I'd always have to fire the call to the remote server object every time which I don't want.
I have to be missing a simple best practice? Suggestions welcome.

Hi there rickcr
This is pretty rough and you'll need to do some tidying up but have a look below.
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute">
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import mx.controls.Alert;
import mx.collections.ArrayCollection;
private var comboData:ArrayCollection;
private function setUp():void {
if (comboData) {
Alert.show('Data Is Present')
populateForm()
} else {
Alert.show('Data Not')
getData();
private function getData():void {
comboData = new ArrayCollection();
// On the result of this call the setUp again
private function populateForm():void {
// populate your form
]]>
</mx:Script>
<mx:TabNavigator left="50" right="638" top="50" bottom="413" minWidth="500" minHeight="500">
<mx:Canvas label="Tab 1" width="100%" height="100%">
</mx:Canvas>
<mx:Canvas label="Tab 2" width="100%" height="100%" show="setUp()">
</mx:Canvas>
</mx:TabNavigator>
</mx:Application>
I think this example is kind of showing what you want. When you first click tab 2 there is no data. When you click tab 2 again there is. The data for your combo is going to be stored in comboData. When the component first gets created the comboData is not instansiated, just decalred. This allows you to say
if (comboData)
This means if the variable has your data in it you can populate the form. At first it doesn't so on the else condition you can call your data, and then on the result of your data coming back you can say
comboData = new ArrayCollection(), put the data in it and recall the setUp procedure again. This time comboData is populayed and exists so it will run the populate form method and you can decide which selected Item to set.
If this is on a bigger scale you'll want to look into creating a proper manager class to handle this, but this demo simple shows you can test to see if the data is tthere.
Hope it helps and gives you some ideas.

• Mac mini with Acer H223HQ (Just making sure)

Hi,
I going to buy the new Mac mini (the cheap one) and I'd like to be sure that the *Acer H223HQ* (1920 * 1080) is going to work well with it . I'll have to use the Mini-DVI -> DIV Adapter to connect the Mac mini to the screen right ?
Thanks!

I too am considering purchasing the Acer H233HQ monitor. I was ready to purchase it from Buy.com but then noted the review below. I don't quite understand what the review is talking about, but I wanted to make sure that this would not be an issue for me with my new mac mini if I purchase this particular monitor. Shouldn't the DVI work with this monitor just like any other contemporary monitor? Can anyone confirm that the monitor and mini work optimally together?
"Just got this monitor in today and hooked up to my trusty mac mini. I had to remote in to the mac mini in order to get the monitor to stay on for me to get the sys prefs to a lower resolution size. It won't accept the native resolution as it is set at a 60 mhz refresh rate.. Cant move it to 75mhz. Monitors with DVI look crisp and clear. This one looks like I am using junk Microsoft PC with a VGA cable. Acer's website doesn't list this monitor at all in their system. A big waste of time and I blew a coupon that I cant use again. If you are a MAC USER pick something else..."

• Just Making Sure

Hi,
I know this is being killed to death on this forum, there is like 4 on the front page already, but i just wanted to make sure that this Ram would work. I'm about 99% sure that it will but why not ask right? This is in canadian currency, from a local store, is this a good price? And is Kingston a a semi-decent name? Thanks for all the help.
Troy

While Kingston is a good brand, their Value RAM series is not approved for use in Macs. They have a different line of RAM for use in Macs.
Macs are more sensitive to variation of quality in RAM than PCs are. I have read of many users buying Kingston VR and working, but others have reported kernel panics and general system instability that was traced back to the RAM itself.
I would avoid KVR for that reason. Save the headaches and buy RAM from a place that guarantees Mac compatibility and has a lifetime replacement warrantee like CanadaRAM.

• Is anyone else seeing the connect to itunes thingy when you update your device? Im just making sure im doing things Correctly Lol

I tried to update my ipod touch, and it said to connect to itunes. Does this update like delete everything? I havent seen this since i first bought my ipod.

Some users have experienced a glitch when updating via wifi and have had to connect the iPod to their computer and restore via iTunes.
You iPod is erased as part of the restore. You can restore from backup See:
iOS: How to back up
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

• Does your iTunes do this? Just making sure

If you have 2 artists, let's say "John" and "John Mayer". In plain list view, it lists John before John Mayer, but when switching to the thumbnail view for Artists, iTunes sorts them so that "John Mayer" is listed BEFORE "John". Why does it do that?
Is that how it's supposed to be or am I missing something in the artist field?
Thanks

Well!
If you have ThunderBolt, I would go with such for an External Working Drive, spinning platter or SSD depending on your budget
This does not have to be huge just big enough to house your most current Jobs
Once the Current Job is put to rest I would move it to a larger multi bay hard drive unit, USB or FireWire nothing fancy, no RAID, set up as one single Disk
This would only be accessed when something is needed from a past Job so the connection does not have to be speedy
The Drobo would be relegated to Vaults and backups
You can set up a Vault on the Drobo to back up the External Working Library and then Reconnect it when you have moved the Library over to the other Enclosure
This has worked for me pretty smoothly for a long while, but I have found over the years that one can not assume all people work in the same manner! :-)

• I created a ringtone successfully and assigned it to a contact, but the default ring always answers, I've tried deleting the contact, and also shutting the phone down completely, but neither has worked. One tip mentioned making sure format was correct??

I assigned a ringtone to a contact but the default answers. I've tried deleting the contact and reinstalling it and shutting the phone down (holding the home button in and the top button until apple icon appears), One tip mentioned making sure the format was correct. ??? Any suggestions? The ringtone itself works if used as a default, but when I assign it to this contact, no dice.

First thing to always do is write a Certified Return Receipt letter or just copy the post you made and send it to Verizon Wireless and dispute it in writing.
Then walk down to your local court and file a small claims court case against Verizon for all the fraudulent charges. Verizon will call you before that court case and then it may be possible to get this wiped off your account.
Also file a BBB complaint http://www.bbb.org
Again Verizon will contact you to offer to settle. Get the settlement in writing not verbal. Or proceed to court.
Sorry you are going through hell for something you should never have had to go through.
Good Luck

You have limited opportunity to attempt to create a backup of your created files.
That is what the SafeBoot or safemode appears to allow you -- at the moment.
Since the hard disk drive exhibits signs of failure or other major issues, plan
on a replacement in the near future. You may be able to get the computer to
start up in a regular full OS X (not safe mode) but consider its hours are limited.
An externally enclosed hard disk drive (with own power supply, not relying on
Mac ports to run it) is a good basic means of which to use a disk utility to make
a copy or a Clone of the current OS X. This may help retrieve an archive that
could be used along with a Time Machine backup, to restore your Mac once you
get a new hard drive installed inside.
Good luck & happy computing!

• Making sure I understand release/retain correctly

Let's say I do the following (foo starts out as some object):
[foo release];
// STUFF with foo
[foo retain];
As long as I'm not re-assigning foo, at the end of this I'll still have the same foo, right? I'm not risking losing foo during the //STUFF am I?
I guess I'm making sure that my understanding of release is correct. If I release foo, it doesn't actually go away until all handles on it are gone. In other words, foo would have to be assigned to some other object in the //STUFF, or foo would have to go out of scope in the //STUFF (and presumably have a new foo created) in order for the actual original foo object to be deleted, right?
Ok, edit for motivation, because that's kind of a dumb thing to want to do, right?
The reason I want to do this is that lets say I have the following switch statement:
switch (test)
case 1:
foo = [A alloc];
[foo inita];
break;
case 2:
foo = [B alloc];
[foo initb];
break;
case 3:
[foo setupc];
break;
case 4:
f = [D alloc];
[foo initd];
break;
It makes sense to release foo before the switch and retain it at then end. EXCEPT for case 3. So, I was thinking that if was safe to do what I proposed, it might make the code simpler.
Of course I can just put a release/retain pair around each alloc/init, but that's a lot of replicated code...
A [foo autorelease] and then the retain might just do the trick.

There is no way to tell. If the retain count of foo was one just before the release, then all bets are off.
I guess I'm making sure that my understanding of release is correct. If I release foo, it doesn't actually go away until all handles on it are gone.
I'm not sure I understand your understanding. I wouldn't use a term like "handle" since that has a specific meaning that is different than "retain count". If you replace "handle" with "retain count", then you are correct.
In other words, foo would have to be assigned to some other object in the //STUFF, or foo would have to go out of scope in the //STUFF (and presumably have a new foo created) in order for the actual original foo object to be deleted, right?
I'm not sure what you are saying. Objective-C is not C++. A variable going out of scope means nothing in Objective-C. It isn't that complex. It keeps track of the number of times "retain" is called on the object (including the original, implicit "retain"). When the number of releases matches the number of retains, then the object is deallocated.
Ok, edit for motivation, because that's kind of a dumb thing to want to do, right?
The reason I want to do this is that lets say I have the following switch statement:

break;
case 4:
f = [D alloc];
[foo initd];
break;
You don't want to do that. Alloc-init is a set of operations. You can't spit them up. The object that "alloc" returns may not necessarily be the same object that "init" returns. "Alloc" may just return a global proxy object to do something more clever during the init.

As long as you bought the current version of Aperture from the App Store you can download it as many time as you like without any additional cost.
You need to make sure you use the same Apple ID when you log into the App Store as you used when you first purchased Aperture.
