Poster Frames in iWeb?

When I set poster frames in iweb or quick time pro or even compressor they do not appear in browser? May be a bug in iWeb. Or yet a long standing problem? Thank you for you help all.
David

Having same problem. Use IWeb 08 Inspector to set poster frame, looks correct in IWeb, “publish all” to MobileMe and poster frame does not work. Purchased quicktime Pro to enable the set poster frame option, but $30.00 later still could not find a way to maintain IPod touch .m4v compatible format. Save would change to .mov format which Touch could not read. New to mac so may be a way to use QuickTime Pro to save .m4v format, but as work around used the following steps in IMovie HD v6 on Ibook:
1) Slide to desired poster frame
2) File/ Save Frame
3) Drag frame to front of timeline
4) Insert Fade In transition between picture frame and movie
5) Drag picture down to 0.01 seconds (which now acts as poster frame)
Can’t load IMovie 08 so not sure if has same Save Frame option, but if not IMovie HD 6 can be downloaded for free if ILife 08 installed.

  • How do I change a Quicktime poster frame in iweb?

I have a quicktime movie on my iweb page that starts in black. I set a different poster frame in quicktime but it still displays as black until you play it in iweb and when it's published.
Is there a way to change this poster frame in iweb so that it doesn't display a black frame before you play it?
I guess I could edit one frame at the very beginning of the original movie but I would rather not have to do it that way.

  • Imporing QT movies but set poster frame doesn't remain in iWeb

I've "set poster frames" in the Quicktime movies that I am importing into iWeb. They appear properly in my working iWeb file but the poster frame I've set doesn't remain after the site is published. The Quicktime poster frame goes back to black. Anyway to fix this?

you can of course set the QT background to any color, I use white, in the Export window. Blends into the background of my page which is also white.

  • IWeb - Poster Frame

I just launched a new website and have had no problems except for getting the poster frame to work properly. I don't like the poster frame (frame of video to freeze) on three of the video, so I adjusted to the desired frame using the poster frame in the inspector. It saves and shows the adjusted shot that I just made in iWeb, but once I publish site changes (done this many, many times) it never shows on my web page. I reopen iWeb and it still shows the change I made, but I can't get it to change on my webpage. Any suggestions?

Although I don't display movies this way due its severe limitations, it seems that there has been a problem with poster frames in the last two versions of iWeb. Does anybody report this?
I spent a little time looking into other ways of displaying movies with a poster frame. This one calls up the QT plugin and loads a poster movie. It has the advantage that the "real" movie doesn't have to load with the page but is more complicated than most users would wish.....
    http://web.me.com/roddymckay/Movies-New/Poster-Movie.html
It looks like HTML5 is going to be able to do this very simply someday. Unfortunately, in this example, the poster image only displays while the movie is loading and disappears when it is ready to play.....

Most of the new players that use HTML5 and fallback to flash for browsers that don't support it have provision for a poster image - like this one...

  • IWeb losing Quicktime poster frames upon publish

I have pages with many videos published, and have to painstakingly set the poster frame on every video.
Then if I make any changes and re-publish, ALL the poster frames are lost and I have to do it all again.
THIS IS AN AGONIZINGLY IRRITATING BUG and I may switch platforms just because of this one idiotic bug.
Any suggestions? Or are we just yelling into the Apple support cave?

This is a royal PITA. I have battled this for a long time and have created my own workaround. I too have a lot of videos. I create a video album in IPhoto. Then I create aan album page in IWeb and drag the Album into IWeb album page. I click the album and all of the videos show in the matrix. I set the poster frame like normal in each video. BTW, when you republish, all of the poster frames are reset to the actual 1st frame of video, which is usually black for me.
When you publish the first time, the poster frame gets renamed thumb.jpg. If you publish to a folder, the thumb.jpg resides in the same folder as the movie file. When you publish again, the thumb.jpg in IWeb gets changed back to the first frame of the video. What I do is save the folders with the correct thumb files in them. When I publish the site again, I only ever upload the new pages. Even though there is a choice to only publish changes, It redoes all of the files and folders in the new site folder. I thentake out of the second site folder that I published, the additional pages and upload those additional pages. I do this as I add to the site. That way, the original poster frames never get changed once they are uploaded. And since I save the original published files , I can always upload in case I accidentally republish the page.
    Hope that's not too confusing.

  • Can't set Poster Frame for Movies on site

Hi - Any insight into this problem is much appreciated - I've built a simple site, a few pages have 2 or 3 compressed MPEG-4 movie files on the page (they are roughly 30MB each clip). I built the clips in FCP then exported them using Compressor and saved them as MPEG-4 files. I then dragged the files onto blank pages and built the site that way. I have set the Poster Frames for these clips in iWeb08, but after I publish the site the Poster Frames only save on a few files, most do not. Also, some of the clips stop playing mid-way through. Any simple fixes for this/these problem(s)? Thanks.

Part of your "monicker" best describes the issue.
You can edit your published pages using hundreds of tools but the are best edited with a plain text editing app like BBEdit (any plain text editor works).
You can use Safari to view your page and even "save" the source code (Command-Option-U) and then "save as". Edit this new page to make your changes and drag it back into the appropriate Web older of your iDisk (replacing the older version).
I did it to one of my pages to add a sound file to one of my slideshow pages:

just because others said it couldn't be done.

  • Can't set POSTER FRAME for .mp4 movies... can for most others

    I've got QTPro.
When I try to create a poster frame for a .mp4 movie I compressed it tells me I have to save and does one of the following two things:
    1) Tells me I can't save after I hit SAVE
    2) Tells me it wants to save as a .mov file... I don't WANT a .mov file.
    Any thoughts?

  • "poster frame" difficulties

I open iWeb, build a page, set the poster frame, save -- go away, come back and the poster frame is gone -- all I have is a black space where it once was. What am I doing wrong and how do I correct it?

That's been a problem for a while now. Be sure to report it to Apple via via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iweb.html. The more reports the better chance they'll work on a fix.
A common suggested fix is to paste a still image that you want to use as a poster frame at the very beginning of the movie with Quicktime Player 7. That's because the default frame is the first frame of the movie/video. Not very elegant but does work.
Another possible workaround is shown on this demo page: Opening Item in a New, Precisely Sized Window. There you can use any image you want as the "poster" frame.

  • Poster Frame Bug?

After creating a Photo Page and adding 3 movies. I set the Poster Frame on all 3 movies plus adjust some of the movies in's and out's. I publish and everything is great. If I quit iWeb and open it again to update my website, the photo pages with movies lose the poster frame and in and outs. So I have to manually set them again before publishing??? Anyone else having this issue? Thanks!

    Darren;
Are you adding the movies in the photo page area where photos usually go? A better option would be to add the three movies to a non photo page like shown on this demo page: Opening Item in a New, Precisely Sized Window. That way you can use any frame of the movie as the poster frame and the movies do not load until the play button or the thumbnail (example at bottom of page) is clicked on.

  • Set the thumbnail/poster frame?

I use iMovie to generate QuickTime files, which I embed in HTML web pages.
Is there a way to specify the frame which displays when the embedded movie is not being played? I.e. the image that appears in the QuickTime player in the webpage, prior to hitting play.
    Thanks for any help!

When I tried setting the poster frame in QT Pro and then saving the file, the format seemed to have mysteriously changed.
If you check the "Inspector" or "Properties" windows you should find that the audio and video compression formats have remained the same. What did change was the file container which I now assume is MOV.
When put online, the new files remain as giant quicktime logos, whereas the original versions would start to show video immediately. I think this may have been because I exported from iMovie as "streaming". Do you happen to know how to preserve this parameter when saving from QT Pro?
Not knowing how you are posting your files it is difficult to guess what is confusing the plug-in player. For instance, did you remember to change the file extensions in your references to match the new file container extension? Or, if you did, did you empty the download cache or force a page reload to refresh the page changes? As to setting the "Fast Start" option for auto playback while the movie is being cached to the local hard drive, this is normally re-set to "on" when you access the "Save As..." option in QT Pro. Of course, the file embedded setting is overridden if you embed an "AutoPlay" parameter with a value like "True", "False", or a specific cache load point that will automatically start playback when a cache download reaches that time reference. If you are using an application like iWeb to post your pages, then simply set the "Autoplay" option and let the application write the code for you. The hinted tracks are only needed if you are actually posting your files to a real time streaming server. The "Fast Start" content is what most users actually see/use here and are talking about whe the talk about streaming. In any case, until the logo problem is corrected, you won't know whether you file still capable of "Fast Start" auto playback.
As an alternative you can always "paste" a still frame of the same dimensions as your movie as the first display frame in your movie or create/code a separate "poster frame" still image to your web page. (I believe QT Kirk has covered this latter work flow a number of times in the QT Pro forum.)

  • QuickTime files not visible in Firefox (Mac) & poster frame not visible

I created a website with QuickTime samples and uploaded it to an ftp server.
I can see the QT files when I access via Safari (Mac + Win), Chrome (Win), IE (Win) and Firefox (Win), but for some reason, when I access via Firefox (Mac) they do not appear???????? Any ideas on that?
Also, I have tried setting a poster frame, both using QT Pro and iWeb's poster frame function, but it does not seem to be working. I still only see the first frame of the video which unfortunately is a black frame. I am getting a little frustrated with this...
    Please help.

There are alternative ways to add a QT file to a web page that might be of interest to you. Both ways do not require the movie to load with the page which speeds up the page load.
1 - Opening Item in New Window Sized for the Item.
2 - QT Movie Exported out of QT via Export for Web

  • Set poster frame not an option in View menu

Do you need QuickTime Pro just to be able to set a poster frame for a particular .MOV file?  I have read on the internet that other people find this option in the View menu, but it doesn't show up for me.  I have Lion installed.
    Thanks!

I have an amazingly simple solution that worked for me:
Open the video in quicktime and press cmd+c on the frame of your choice. Then right click the video file in he finder and choose "Get Info" press cmd+v and the poster frame will be fixed.
I do not have Quicktime Pro, so this will work on hopefully any version of Quicktime.
It appears that different people have different definitions of a "Poster Frame." This gentleman is referring to the icon image displayed at the Finder level rather than a true "Poster Frame" as can be designated by QT 7 Pro, iWeb, or iTunes apps. The icon display to which he is referring can be created by either by pasting a copied frame to the "Info" window as described above or by dragging and dropping an image file (of compatible dimensions and format) directly to the "Info" widow icon area.
As to the creation of a designated "Poster Frame," if you do not have QT 7 Pro or no longer use iWeb, then your can create a "Poster Frame" using iTunes. Simply open the file in the iTunes player, locate the frame you want designated as the "Poster Frame," control-click the player window to open the context menu, and select the "Set Poster Frame" option. If the video does not already have a "Cover Art" image associated with it, the designated poster frame will be used as the cover art image but not adopted as the file icon image. If the file already has an external image associated with it as cover art, then the cover art image is used for both the cover art and the file icon image but the "Poster Frame" will still be recognized by applications that recognize/use this designation.

  • Rotated Movie, Poster Frame is unrotated

I took a movie in portrait mode instead of the normal landscape mode.
Then I used QT Pro 7.0.3 to rotate it. Nice job!
Then I went to View > Set Poster Frame after selecting the desired frame.
Saved the file. Went to finder and the Poster Frame (or Icon) in the Finder is unrotated.
    Bug? Or feature?
    Any help appreciated.
    Roberto

I am seeing the same thing:
    !http://idisk.mac.com/charlie.whitfield/Public/Pictures/Skitch/iWeb-20080718-231 737.jpg!
I publish movies to .Mac/MM directly from iMovie '08. I add them to my iWeb pages using Insert/.Mac Web Gallery:
    !http://idisk.mac.com/charlie.whitfield/Public/Pictures/Skitch/Untitled1-2008072 2-185017.jpg!
There's no way to select the poster frame from within iWeb. However, I would expect that capability to exist within iMovie '08 but it doesn't.
I asked the same question over on the iMovie '08 forum and [didn't get very far besides determining that it can't be done without buying Quicktime Pro|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7683855#7683855].

  • Poster Frame will not work

After reviewing all of the suggestions here in the forum, I still cannot get Poster Frame to work.
Here is what I have done:
    - Published to a Desktop folder and ran the index.html page to see if functionality worked. Did not.
    - Trashed iWeb prefs, restarted, the repaired permissions. Still doesn't work.
    - Published ALL to Mobile Me. Again won't work.
All I see is the Black frame while the QT file preloads.
    Here is a website:
    http://www.raymondchase.com/Home/Portal.html
    Any ideas?
    -Ray

In your topic I said that I had managed to get it to work by doing a "Publish All to MobileMe".
That was true but the movie was on an Albums template.
I tried it every which way just now using a movie page and a blank page and using Publish and Publish All.
I can't get it to work.
I have emailed the iWeb development team about this.
