Postfix Equivalent to qmail Alias Domains

Hey all,
I've been Googling, but can't find an answer to this one. Does postfix have the functionality equivalent to qmail's Alias Domains feature?
I want to have one mail server to handle mail for all my servers, but without ditching the hostname part of my servers when sending mail. That was confusing.
Example:
I have 3 servers:
earth.mydomain.com
venus.mydomain.com
mars.mydomain.com
I want mail sent from each of those servers to be sent as '[email protected]' and '[email protected]' or whatever user on whichever server it's being sent from.
I want to point the MX records for the above 3 servers, to the one server that handles mail for 'mydomain.com' and then have that server alias 'earth.mydomain.com' to 'mydomain.com'.
[email protected] - delivered to [email protected]
[email protected] - delivered to [email protected]
[email protected] - delivered to [email protected]
This way I don't have to maintain user tables on the mail server for every user on each server.
This is subtly different to a catch-all virtual mailbox alias in that:
1) I still only want to accept mail if the '[email protected]' exists (not catch all!).
2) The forward should keep the user the same, but 'catchall' the host part of the domain.

No, unfortunately not.

  • Postfix doesn't recognize my domain

    I'm setting up postfix so I can send mail from an SMF forum on a dedicated mac mini with a static IP address. Following the instructions in the postfix.org documentation I've set
    mydomain = <mydomainname>.com
    where <mydomainname> is as in www.<mydomainname>.com
    but when I reload postfix I get:
    $ sudo postfix reload
    postfix: fatal: file /etc/postfix/main.cf: parameter mail_owner: unknown user name value: _postfix mydomain = <mydomainname>.com
    How is postfix supposed to "know" my domain name?

    It's not complaining about your domain. It's complaining about the username that Postfix is instructed to run as.
    Given the specific message in the text it sounds like the mail_owner parameter is merging with the next line so it's seeing something like:
    mail_owner = _postfix mydomain = <mydomainname>.com
    the mydomainparameter should be on a separate line.
    Edit the file /etc/postfix/main.cf and check these lines.

  • SharePoint 2013 - Incoming email with smtp alias domain

    Hi All
    I have configured the following for SharePoint 2013 Incoming email.
    CA - Incoming email - enabled
    Automatic and received mail from all servers
    email server display address:
    [email protected]
    smtp installed on one SharePoint server and configured with
    defautl domain:  spservername.domain.net and alias domain:
    spmail.domainname.net
    emails are receiced in SharePoint lists / library are working when incoming email settings using the default local smtp domain (spservername.domainname.net) but not working when using the alias domain (spmail.domainname.net).
    Can anyone advice of what I have done wrong or missing in my configuration?
    Thanks in advance for your comments or advices

    I tried that but that did not work.  I got this error below.  Does that mean I need to create a DNS MX record for spmail.domainname.net to point it to the smtp server
    spservername.domain.net
    Thanks

    It looks like you have a DNS mis-configuration in this case with regards to how your MX record is configured (if it exists at all).

    Hi guys,
    Do you know how we can make work IM Convergence using "alias domain"
    if I use the main domain, it works fine but if I use one of the alias domain of the main domain IM Convergence keep saying "connecting"
    I already changes the iim.conf and the httpbind.conf files to include the main and alias domains...
    any ideas ?
    thanks a lot
    have a good day

  • Postfix "virtual alias domain" / "mydestination"

    In /var/log/mail.log I often find the following line:
    do not list domain starenterprise.com in BOTH mydestination and
    virtualmailboxdomains
    I reviewed the document http://www.postfix.org/VIRTUAL_README.html where it is stated that not do this, but without stating a reason why.
    All I found during a search engine research was that in some cases a loop can occur, but it was mentioned in connection with a different Postfix topic, not virtual aliases one. And I also think that this doesn't play a role. If a loop occured, I should notice this that a mail account grows largely, shouldn't ?
    My mail service works fine and before doing a change here, I would like to know where is the problem when leaving it as it is currently. Unfortunately I did not found any information about this topic.
    In /etc/postfix/main.cf I have these lines (if I should post others, please let me know):
    myhostname = starenterprise.com
    mydomain = starenterprise.com
    virtualmailboxdomains = hash:/etc/postfix/virtual_domains
    mydestination = $myhostname,localhost.$mydomain,localhost
    In /etc/postfix/virtual_domains file I have starenterprise.com; but there is also a comment not to edit this file.
    So if there is a solution required, I would need to remove starenterprise.com from myhostname (since mydestination refers to). Is this correct ? But what to add then ? starenterprise.com is a domain of mine (the main one of the server, by the way) and used for sending/receiving mail and for naming the mail server.
    But first of all why should I do that ? I really read the Postfix virtual readme carefully, but confessed have no glue what can go wrong. Furthermore I don't want to hurt my running mail service. Hope for some light

    The offence is becuasae you cannot list a domain name as local and virtual,
    one or the other but not both.
    Since it's the main domain name that you have listed in the virtual list,
    removing it from the virtual list will correct the faux-pas.
    Okay, okay, I have removed our main domain from the virtual domain list and luckily anything still works.
    What I not understand and the only thing I really want to know is... what can happen worst when keeping the local domain also listed at the virtual domain list... go I then right straight to **** or need I fear the revange of the Postfix daemon ?
    Confessed I have problems seeing the difference of local and virtual domains, maybe also because the German version of SA headlines the virtual domain list box with "Locally available, virtual domains".
    I'm aware that it seems not to be good practice (otherwise no error/warning would appear, logically). But it is also not good practice to cross a road when the traffic light is red. So I look forward to someone that can tell me more.

    my new alias should be in the form
    o=com-pany.net,dc=company,dc=com

    let's suppose my existing domain has the following dn
    dn: o=company.com,dc=company,dc=comIf you are using schema 2 then domain 'aliases' are set with the associatedDomain attribute.
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-4428/bgahk?a=view
    So to add an "alias" domain you add the appropriate associatedDomain e.g.
    dn: o=company.com,dc=company,dc=com
    associatedDomain: com-pany.netRegards,

  • Using maildir with Postfix

    MAILDIR : Qmail ---> Postfix
    I'm migrating from Qmail (on an eMac to Postfix on a MacPro.
    One thing I'm reluctant to leave behind is the use of maildir ("Two words: no locks").
    Is anyone here using maildir with Postfix on OS X Server (10.5.2)?
    How did you get it to work cleanly?
    Are there any caveats to using the Sys Admin tool afterwords?
    I love Qmail... but, I think I need to move to Postfix on the Pro for ease of ongoing maintenance and updates. Qmail is ROCK solid once set up, but is a bit of a pain to remember everything you need to get into place for updating a piece of the toaster. Though I love what daemontools provides, I'll also be able to use launchd now for more simplicity. The thought of setting up the complete qmail toaster again makes my brain hurt. That's the problem with a great setup that worked, you forget it!
    FYI - links of note:
    http://cr.yp.to/qmail.html -- DJBs qmail site
    http://cr.yp.to/proto/maildir.html -- info about maildir
    http://www.qmailrocks.org/ -- one of the best qmail toaster sites (close to the same tools as OS X)
    http://www.zippy6.net/osx/qmail.html -- adventures on OS X (& qmail)
    Virtual Domains & WGM Users
    An aside.. I'm using vpopmail for virtual domains... and I'm researching the virtual domain thing on 10.5.2+postfix... do I really need to use WGM? I don't want to create OS level users if I can help it... Maybe I just don't understand WGM -- I've been reading the forum on this issue, but there are lots of posts to weed through...! so if you also know about this issue... that'd be great!

    Luckily I skipped ever working with sendmail!
    The short answer to your question is: Yes. I'm sure the postfix mailbox default would be just fine especially in my light use case.... But I have (a little) extra time, and I really like maildir. I just think it is superior. So even though I am going leopard server to relieve me of extra work... I can't help tweaking it here or there for fun (cause it isn't for profit!). Asking for others experience in the the forum seems perfectly reasonable. After reading, I'm pretty sure setting for maildir would not be much extra work or break anything. I'm more worried about the virtual domain stuff.
    All things being equal, I would prefer to stay with qmail... however, I am a "light" sysadmin, not a pro one. I've managed a few boxes in the past and set up FreeBSD with qmail+tools etc... but I no longer manage those. I still manage my own server at home with a few domains and a small group of email accounts (family and friends).
    I'm a Mac guy from WAY back, but I also like Unix (OS X was a huge lump of cool beans for me!) So my computer of choice is a Mac. When I set up the eMac ~4 years ago, I wanted to run qmail on it and I didn't buy OSX server. But, the truth is that putting qmail together on the mac was a HUGE pain in the kiester! Obviously I got it working, but not without a fair amount of tweaking and re-compiling etc. etc. And as you know the eMac is PPC. So now I've got a Mac Pro and it's going to do a lot for me. Since I've got a student discount (MBA), I also got Leopard server.
    What I expect is a simpler administration experience, along with more confidence of options for putting things right when they go wrong, including being able to rapidly recreate the server from scratch if I need to. Frankly even with my copious notes, I'm not sure I could recreate the eMac server quickly! (BTW that **** eMac has run flawlessly 24x7 for 4 years straight (another reason to rotate it off.)
    So, no, I am not expecting Postfix to "wow" me over qmail. And I'm fine with using a single postfix alias file instead of the pretty cool .qmail-alias files. Though I could build the whole thing, I want all the pieces to pretty much be there for me. I got other fish to fry!
    Since I know my way around FreeBSD there just is a bit of a learning curve using Leopard server sys admin tools. Since I'm in no rush (I don't have a busted server), I'm taking my time learning how to get the postfix part of the puzzle set up right: maildir and virtual domains. I'm setting up a new server with OS X server.
    I had no intent to write this much LOL.. Your point on mailbox is entirely valid. I just want to use maildir if it isn't too much trouble. "Need?" Nope. I don't need. Incurable computer nut with foibles? Yep!

  • Postfix sacl_check

    I am testing mail service on a Lion Server, and am currently seeing several entries related to sacl_check in mail.log.
    More specifically, if I send a message to an external email address (ie:  "[email protected]"), I see the following entries:

    The messages are being delivered successfully, but I don't understand these sacl_check messages from smptd and cleanup. I've not seen them in versions of OS X server prior to Lion.
    Can anyone help?

    Thanks to those for giving the info above. It helped me find out what was going on. To add a bit to general knowledge on what I understand about postfix and mail adresses/users:
    Postfix uses at certain stages the $myorigin variable to add to addresses that have no @domain part attached. [1]. If you run a postfix server on a ML Server, that will normally work, because the default value for $myorigin is $myhostname and that $myhostname is normally where your network users (and local users) live (at least when you follow the default setup by Apple)
    But if you have configured postfix to use an alias when talking to the outside world, e.g. (default pattern by Apple Server.app setup)
    Your domain is server.foo.com
    Your server is called server.foo.com
    But your server uses an alias mail.foo.com ($myhostname) when talking to the outside world. As a result a name like bar will become [email protected] inside postfix at certain points.
    You server, however can only recognize the name without the @domain part or with the name of the server, so, for user bar, your server server.foo.com recognizes
    bar
    [email protected]
    but it does not recognize
    [email protected]
    and that leads to the sacl_check() error. (check with "dsmemberutil getuuid -U <user>") as explained by ckillian above
    When you empty $local_alias_maps, you in fact tell postfix it should not check if a local user exists at all, as this will be done downstream. That works to prevent the sasl_check() error, but it also stops postfix from filtering a lot of mail (spam) that is directed at non-existing users.
    So, the only true solution for the local part (I haven't looked into anything with aliases that translate to an external address yet) seems to be to set $myorigin to the hostname of the server (but beware!, see below)
    sudo serveradmin settings mail:postfix:myorigin = server.foo.com
    Note: if you set up ML Server and you choose a domain name, this becomes both the name of the machine and the name of the domain. E.g.
    Your domain is server.foo.com
    Your server is called server.foo.com
    I prefer to have those separated, so I have set up my domain as foo.com. That means that after ML setup is complete I need to change the machine name to server.foo.com. That effects the validity of your setup, so you have to run the following command after having done the basic setup:
    sudo changeip 192.168.x.x 192.168.x.x foo.com server.foo.com
    Where 192.168.x.x should be replaced by the IP address of your server (a local address, assuming your server is behind a NAT router). That leads to:
    Your domain is foo.com (also in DNS, you cover all of the foo.com domain in your own DNS)
    Your server is called server.foo.com
    That means that in using $mydomain for $myorigin does not work anymore, because the server does not recognize [email protected], it only recognizes bar and [email protected]. So, you set the $myorigin to server.foo.com.
    BUT THERE IS A NASTY CATCH: if bar is rewritten to [email protected], postfix does not know yet that server.foo.com is a local destination. So, it happily sends the mail for [email protected] to your outside relay (if you're lucky to have one) or to your own mail server creating and endless loop (if your luck runs out). The solution is to add $myorigin to $mydestinations.
    serveradmin won't let you change $mydestinations. Even with a simple argument it crashes:
    $ sudo serveradmin settings mail:postfix:mydestination = 'localhost'
    2013-04-06 12:50:47.913 serveradmin[22575:707] -[__NSCFString objectEnumerator]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x7fb92a41e3b0
    2013-04-06 12:50:47.914 serveradmin[22575:707] Exception in doCommand for module servermgr_mail on thread 0x7fb92a40c700: -[__NSCFString objectEnumerator]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x7fb92a41e3b0
    (seems a bug) so you need to edit /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/main.cf by hand and make sure $myorigin is added to $mydestinations.
    [1] If you use canonical names, e.g. user jonsmith inside becomes [email protected] on the outside you also have aliases that do the reverse [email protected] becomes jonsmith. But that latter name may get $myorigin added by postfix. If your aliases al are fqdn in the form of [email protected] this will not happen, but that is a bad solution (you won't catch all uses and it is hard to keep consistent).
    [2] http://www.postfix.org/LOCAL_RECIPIENT_README.html
    PS. I haven't tested a solution where you make $myorigin empty. It can work, but you need to have a canonical for all users, another consistency nightmare. The easiest solution would be if my Open Directory domain server.foo.com would accept mail.foo.com as an alias for password checking, uuid.

  • Changing personal domain from enom to .mac--what did I leave out?

    Help! I have been reading all of the great advice posted, but am still not having success. I'm sure I probably left something out, but this is what I have done so far:
    I am changing my domain name with enom to .mac and have made the following changes: I have changed the www to web.mac.com/mymembername/iweb/mysitename and chose url redirect. I also put web.mac.com for the cname alias, with mydomain.com (no www) in the address portion. Was I suppose to edit the dns server info by adding the numeric equivalent of my personal domain? Also, I have seen opposing opinions on whether or not to change the A address(s).
    I have also confirmed that .mac recognizes my domain name. However, when I type in my address, it turns into the web.mac....but an Apple error page shows error code #424 trouble syncing...etc. What does that mean?
    By the way, it has been 48 hours since my changes (above.) I would so appreciate some help. Thanks!

    I had already tried that one and got this...
    below is screen shot of what is on the new mac mini
    and what is on the external drive now connected to the new mac mini..
    There are no media files on the mac mini just the library files and on external just media files..
    Do I need to copy anything over from the old mac mini ? xml files ? .. the itunes folder on old mini is about 840mb in size which looks to have artwork ect ? .. I am fairly computer literate, but this one has me stumped.. ?

  • How can I send email from my yahoo alias account in iPhone5 mail?

    How can I send email from my yahoo alias account in iPhone5 mail?
    I have 2 email accounts: [email protected] is an alias of [email protected]
    In my old iPhone3 I had these accounts set up so that I could send and receive email from both accounts. I did this using the following settings:
    ‘Other’ POP account info:
    Name: xyz
    Address: [email protected]
    Description: alias
    Incoming mail server:
    Host name: pop.mail.yahoo.com
    User name: [email protected]
    Password: password for yahoo account
    Server port: 995
    Outgoing mail server:
    SMTP: smtp.o2.co.uk (o2 is the name of my phone network)
    Server port: 25
    ‘Yahoo!’ account info:

    Password: password for yahoo account
    Description: Yahoo!
    Outgoing mail server:
    Primary server: Yahoo! SMTP server
    Server port: 465
    I’ve tried using the same settings in my new iPhone5, but it doesn’t work. I can receive mail to both accounts, and can send from the Yahoo account, but I cannot send mail from the alias account. When I try, it displays the message: “Cannot send mail. A copy has been placed in your Outbox. The recipient ‘[email protected]’ was rejected by the server”.
    I’ve tried to configure the POP alias account using combinations of ‘pop.mail.yahoo.com’, ‘pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk’, ‘apple.pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk’ and ‘apple.pop.mail.yahoo.com’, for the incoming host, and ‘smtp.o2.co.uk’, ‘smtp.mail.yahoo.com’, ‘smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk’, ‘apple.smtp.mail.yahoo.com’ and ‘apple.smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk’ for the outgoing mail server. None of these have worked.
    I’ve also tried setting it up using IMAP instead of POP without success. I tried configuring it using combinations of ‘imap.mail.yahoo.com’, ‘apple.imap.mail.yahoo.com’, ‘imap.mail.yahoo.co.uk’ and ‘apple.imap.mail.yahoo.co.uk’ for the incoming mail server and ‘smtp.o2.co.uk’, ‘smtp.mail.yahoo.com’, ‘smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk’, ‘apple.smtp.mail.yahoo.com’ and ‘apple.smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk’ for the outgoing mail server.
    Yahoo say that if I can't send Yahoo! Mail from my mail program, I may be accessing the Internet through an ISP that is blocking the SMTP port, and that if this is the case, I should try setting the SMTP port number to 587 when sending email via Yahoo!'s SMTP server. I don't think that this is the problem, but I tried it just to make sure - without success.
    I’ve also heard that the problem might have something to do with the SPF settings of my alias domain provider. I’m not too sure exactly what SPF settings are, or how to change them, but from what I can gather it seems unlikely that this is the problem given that I was able to send mail from my alias account on my old iPhone3.
    Any help much appreciated: how can I get my alias account to send emails in iPhone5 mail?
    Many thanks,
    Patrick

    A new development: I've tried sending emails from the alias several times over the past 24 hours, but in general I've deleted them if they haven't sent within about half an hour.
    However, one of the messages I left sitting in the outbox did send successfully in the end, but this took about an hour.
    So: perhaps my problem is not in fact that I am completely unable to send mail from my alias, but that I can only do so intermittently and extremely slowly, and by ignoring the "cannot send" message.
    Any help appreciated.

  • Aliasing domain names

    I'm trying to create an alias of a domain name. That is <anyname>@a.com is the same mailbox as <anyname>@b.com. I was trying to use Delegated Administrator to set this up. In the DA interface, there is a box under root->a.com (menu)->organizations->Organization Properties->Domain Information there is a field called: "Alias Names for Domain". I set this to "b.com". I'm assuming this is supposed to be a domain alias.
    This seems to map into the ldap schema as: associateddomain: b.com
    However, when I send mail, it doesn't go through. Instead I get:
    05-Feb-2009 13:09:20.52 tcp_intranet JES 0 [email protected] rfc822; [email protected] 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: [email protected]
    My main question is the "Alias Names for Domain" supposed to work as I expect, or is it there to do something else.
    I am able to make it work if I set up a user alias in DA. That in, in DA, for user [email protected], I set 'Email Aliases:' to [email protected] Then mail to [email protected] works.
    Thanks!

    There is two methods to create a domain alias. The first is an MTA-level domain rewrite rule which rewrites the envelope recipient address from <something>@b.com => <something>@a.com. This approach is much quicker to implement in the short term but has the disadvantage of limited flexibility i.e. users are "forced" to have the email alias.
    To achieve this domain alias you add the following rewrite rule to your imta.cnf file:
    b.com      $E$F$U%a.com@localhostThe second method is the one that you already started to implement. That method is to assign the alias domain (b.com) to a specific user/group schema 2 branch by adding "associateddomain: b.com". Then for each user who needs to have the alias, add an entry to their Email Aliases (mailalternateaddress:).
    The advantage of the second method is that you only have to assign an email alias to those users who want/need it. Also if the user has [email protected], there is no reason why they have to have [email protected], you could assign them [email protected] instead.
    I recommend you continue with the second method.

    Shane.

  • Domain aliasing with iMS 5.2?

    We're testing iMS 5.2 with direct ldap to ds 5.1 and need to do a domain alias. We have our-name.com and ourname.com. We always use ourname.com but some still use the original our-name.com so we would like it to work as an alias. Vanity domain isn't viable.
    The provisioning guide has the ldif code for creating an aliased domain entry in the directory. This went without a problem. But what do I have to do to get IMS to recognize our-name.com is just an alias for ourname.com?
    THANKS!

    In 5.2 or even 5.1, you can simply create the domain alias in LDAP and let the MTA do the rest.
    dc=sample,dc=com,o=internet
    inetdomainbasedn: o=sample, o=hostings, o=isp.com
    dc=alias,dc=com,o=internet
    aliasedobjectname=dc=sample,dc=com,o=internet
    it used to work fine in 5.1 but I can't make it work in 5.2 (direct ldap) : I looked at the directory server logs and ims indeed follows "aliasedobjectname", then searches in the inetdomainbasedn. BUT it searches for the "alias domain" email address ([email protected]), not for the aliased one ([email protected])
    Adding [email protected] as a mailAlternate or mailSupplement attribute is NOT a workaround :<

  • Virtual domains and their installation

    Hello again Alex,
    and anyone else able to enlighten me.
    Thank you all for your help the last time I was in need.
    I'm setting up Postfix by editing the postfix files directly without using server admin due to it's limitations. Especially since I'm using an external GW in a DMZ along with an internal server delivering the mail.
    And now I would like to add virtual domains using "Postfix virtual MAILBOX example: separate domains, non-UNIX accounts". Is this possible with OS X?
    I have read what is on postfix.org, I have read what is in Alex's installation guide but there are a few things I'm not getting.
    I've created the virtual domains and all that stuff but I'm not getting the creation of user access. Do you mean I actually need to create each and every user acessing mail in Workgroup manager?
    Could you point me to some information that bypasses the use of server admin but is still usefull in setting up mail under OS X. I don't want to use SA since I do not want to ruin my manual setup of the Postfix files.
    Kind regards
    Hans

    Are you then saying it would be easier to define the
    users in workgroup manager and use a couple of
    aliases for each user acessing mail?
    Definitely easier, but with the limitations you already know.
    Is it possible, using this method to use names like
    [email protected], [email protected] etc. rather than
    [email protected], [email protected] etc.
    Sure, just follow my tutorial.
    And when
    logging into the mailservice do I then have to use
    the full [email protected] as a user login name to
    access the virtual mailboxes?
    Yes, full name with domain.
    And is it correct to assume that when using the
    server for more than one domain I need to define the
    first as a local domain and the rest as virtual
    domains?
    Yes (if you want to have "hans" as a different user in each domain).
    Alex
    P.S. Just make a backup fo main.cf so you can copy paste changes that might get hosed by Server Admin. Once your setup is complete, adding users through WGM or aliases through /etc/postfix/virtual will not touch main.cf
