Postfix Imap problem

I am using Postfix 2.5.5 running on a Mac Pro (Snow Leopard) as a mail server for my very small home network. I use Apple Mail on both the Mac Pro and on an old Powerbook (Leopard) to access my mailbox via Imap. This used to work just fine but in recent months, probably after some upgrade, mail that I have already read (or deleted or replied to) with one computer is not properly marked when I call up the mail queue on the other machine. For example, if I have just read 5 messages on the Powerbook they will show up later as unread on the Mac Pro, and vice versa. I'd be grateful for any advice on fixing this.
Thanks very much.

  • Remote IMAP problems

    We have recently started hosting our email on our 'in-house' server. We can send and receive email with the following caveats:
    1) Outgoing SMTP messages get lost so I am temporarily relaying all outgoing email through our old ISP SMTP address. How do I set up local SMTP so that it works?
    2) For remote email IMAP and SMTP sending / receiving I have opened the corresponding ports on our firewall so that we can sync home computers / mobile devices to our email. Things seemed to work fine but now I am having all sorts of connection issues. The SMTP log is showing authentication problems.
    Help would be appreciated.

  • OS X Lion postfix smtpd problems

    For the life of me I couldn't get smtpd running correctly on my iMac (brand new SL iMac upgraded to Lion).
    Looking at the syslog, I kept getting:
    postfix/smtpd[1001]: fatal: open /etc/postfix/submit.cred: No such file or directory
    postfix/master[971]: warning: process /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd pid 1001 exit status 1
    postfix/master[971]: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd: bad command startup -- throttling
    Upon checking, that /etc/postfix/submit.cred file was missing. Created a blank one. Syslog then showed:
    postfix/smtpd[1041]: fatal: unsafe ownership or permissions on /etc/postfix/submit.cred: uid/gid/mode are 0/0/644 should be 0/0/0600
    postfix/master[1035]: warning: process /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd pid 1041 exit status 1
    postfix/master[1035]: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd: bad command startup -- throttling
    Did the chmod 0600 on it.
    FINALLY smtpd started accepting connections!
    Syslog still showed a warning:
    postfix/smtpd[1420]: warning: no valid hostport|username|password entries in /etc/postfix/submit.cred
    So I just commented it out of /etc/postfix/main.cf:
    # (APPLE) Credentials for using URLAUTH with IMAP servers.
    #imap_submit_cred_file = /etc/postfix/submit.cred
    And now all looks good.
    Seems this is a new (broken?) option Apple have added to postfix.
    Hope this helps someone else avoid the frustration I've been having!!  :-)

    Hi, the submit.cred file is NOT a new (broken) Apple option. It has been introduced, instead, with the new versions of PostFix, so you could find it also on Linux or BSD installatios running the latest version of it.
    It has been introduced to match the MTA with the RFC4468 (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4468) which describes an extension of the IMAP protocol.
    In order to fix the problem your console is displaying, you should:
    Create a submit.cred file in /etc/postfix directory (sudo touch /etc/postfix/submit.cred will do).
    Create a header for that file: sudo echo "submitcred version 1" >> /etc/postfix/submit.cred
    Add as many lines as the number of users you want to enable to submit mail, in the form hostname|user|passwd sudo echo''hostname|username|password" >> /etc/postfix/submit.cred
    Give the file the appropriate permissions: sudo chmod 600 /etc/postfix/submit.cred
    Once you've done this you could restart postfix and everything sould run smoothly. You should also fine-tune your postfix configuration in order to prevent it to deliver spam or provide security breaches.
    Enjoy.

  • Massive IMAP problem, multiple iPhones - constant spinning wheel

    A friend has had problems using email on his iPhone since he got it, and now after a couple of months of no problems, mine has started doing the same thing.
    The problem started for him on a UK 1.1.2 firmware iPhone with an IMAP account. If you start from scratch, manually setup an IMAP account, it will connect and get your messages. However later, you will find that the iPhone email program is constantly showing the spinning wheel at the top of the screen (showing activity), not the symbol at the bottom of the screen. Worse, the battery rapidly runs down (because it is doing constant data transfers), and worse new emails do not reliably get through. This happens whether you are using GPRS, EDGE, or WiFi (does not make a difference). This problem still happens with 1.1.3 firmware. There is so much data transfer happening (or trying to happen) that the phone actually gets quite warm.
    This week after a couple of months of owning my own iPhone with 1.1.3 firmware has also started doing the same thing. My main IMAP account is on a totally different server, running a different server application to my friends. However it also seems to happen with GMail accounts (using IMAP).
    I am currently at home and I can see my WiFi (AirPort Extreme) base-station showing lots of activity and I know that no other WiFi devices are active so it is purely the iPhone. Turning off the email account stops the problem (and I can then see the WiFi activity stop as well) but that is hardly a solution. Also setting it to manual polling for email helps but again is not a proper solution. It is so bad that sending emails is very difficult as well.
    Even though at the iPhone end nothing seems to be coming through, one can see the iPhone as a connected user at the server end (I have access to the servers, obviously not for Gmail though).
    My friend has swapped his phone four times at the Apple Store and still has the problem, and as I said mine has started as well. Turning off and on does not help, resetting network settings does not help.
    Apple Mail on a Mac (running both Leopard and Tiger), and other IMAP clients have no problems with the same IMAP accounts (for both of us).
    Other Internet access like Web, Stock Widget, Weather Widget, even the iTunes WiFi store work fine. It is just email that is broken.

    Pdobry wrote:
    The problem is that Mail app in iPhone is trying to download message headers via FETCH command and does not handle properly response from IMAP server which does not support partial download of email headers. It starts asking for the headers in the infinite loop which quickly drains out the battery
    More recent testing by myself reveals it is getting stuck on some messages when doing the 'message peek' to get the summary of an email. It gets the subjects fine (as the first pass) but then gets stuck on some emails when doing the second pass to get the summary. Apple Mail on a Mac does not (as far as I am aware) do a message peek so does not have this problem.
    The two different makes of server I have seen this problem with do support this message peek command in that at least some of the time it is working with the iPhone.
    I was able to get a debug level log which shows entries like this
    \[02/Apr/2008 23:56:17\]\[48699904\] {imaps} Peek FETCH executed on message 0000ba58 in folder [email protected]/INBOX
    \[02/Apr/2008 23:56:17\]\[48699904\] {imaps} Sent 1 fetch responses
    \[02/Apr/2008 23:56:18\]\[48699904\] {imaps} Command 293 UID FETCH 47704 BODY.PEEK\[2.HEADER\]<1177.15207>
    \[02/Apr/2008 23:56:18\]\[48699904\] {imaps} Peek FETCH executed on message 0000ba58 in folder [email protected]/INBOX
    \[02/Apr/2008 23:56:18\]\[48699904\] {imaps} Sent 1 fetch responses
    \[02/Apr/2008 23:56:18\]\[48699904\] {imaps} Command 294 UID FETCH 47704 BODY.PEEK\[2.HEADER\]<1177.15207>
    The above shows two repetitions but it keeps on (and on, and on). Other occasions show this does work for other messages. If I deliberately arrange to get the iPhone to connect to get the latest messages I can see it get stuck on a particular message, and then even if I turn it off and back on and reconnect it will get stuck on the same message. If repeated on a later date then the contents of the inbox will have changed and the message it gets stuck on will be different.
    As it seems to be linked to specific messages it was not a surprise that when this is tried on a practically empty email account the problem does not occur.
    This has happened with multiple different makes of mail server (well at least two), multiple email accounts, multiple users, and multiple different iPhones (one person had his swapped four times). It does not happen with 'ordinary' IMAP client software, only with the iPhone.
    Even if one for arguments sake assumes the mail server is at fault and is sending the iPhone garbage, the iPhone should only try a single specific email a maximum number of times (for example five), and then give up. This would prevent it draining the battery so fast and trying to cook itself (by constantly running its transmitter).

  • Creating server based folder on mac/me IMAP- Problem!!!

    I'm having a problem creating an IMAP server based folder to sync with my iphone.
    I can create one for my personal domain email account, which, when sync via itunes appears in my mail app on the iphone.
    But when I try to create one for my .mac/.me account, it does not appear in my Mail app on my computer, let alone on my iphone.
    I click the '+' at the bottom of the left hand pane, click 'new mailbox' and then using location 'mac', with the nice picture of the cloud, enter the name I'd like it to have.
    Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, or do I have a bug?
    Thanks

  • GMAIL IMAP PROBLEM (can't duplicate mailbox in apple mail)

    I am seriously at my wits end! It has been about a week and I am still having huge problems with my gmail imap account in apple mail. At first, my sent messages were not being imported into apple mail (only about 30 days work). After a bunch of fiddling and trying to fix the problem (deleting the account in apple mail, rehooking up the account, rebuilding the mailbox, switching off IMAP enabling in gmail) the problem has only gotten worse.
    Now, only 1000 emails from gmail are sent into apple mail. I know there is a setting within the gmail prefs to limit the amount of messages in an imap folder 1000 but, I have that turned OFF.
    As of right now my apple mail shows about 1000 messages in my inbox and 250 or so in my sent mail. None of the mail is from before 12/7/10.
    The only thing that seems significant about that date is that I set up another IMAP account on a temporary macbook laptop at a temp job on that day in apple mail (the account has since been deleted when I stopped using the laptop).
    Ugh, this is so annoying and frustrating. I often need to look in my mail archive for old messages/attachments.
    I can't seem to find any help anywhere, but if you can offer me any advice I would really appreciate it!
    L

    Hi,
    I don't know if this is relevant... but…
    Last year, when I set up a second, temporary Gmail IMAP account, I found that all did not jell well together…
    I encountered quite a few problems… sending and receiving… transferring to and from the accounts… and lots of Hangs and Time Outs…
    When I had eventually finished with the second account, I not only deleted it from Mac Mail, but Completely Closed and Deleted it with Gmail.
    Since then I have had no such problems with my single Gmail IMAP account…
    As I said, not sure if this is relevant to your Problem, but thought it might be of interest to you.
    Cheers

  • BTYahoo! Email IMAP - Problem saving messages in S...

    I have been using BTYahoo! email with IMAP for several years now. One problem that I never used to have has become more and more regular over the last six months or so. It is now at the point where I get this problem 95% of the time when sending messages.
    When I send a message it seems to get sent ok, but there is then a problem with saving a copy in the Sent folder. Almost every time it will trigger an alert in my e-mail client (currently Thunderbird) saying that the message could not be saved in the Sent folder. This alert appears after a short time-out limit is reached. At this point clicking the option to retry usually works, but sometimes it will just fail repeatedly and I have to cancel the attempt to save a copy.
    I have tried a different e-mail client program but got a similar error alert about not being able to save a copy in the Sent folder. To me that implies it is a problem with either my BTYahoo! email client settings or the server-side system.
    I'm using the same IMAP settings that I had used without issue for a long time.
    imap.mail.yahoo.com  -  port 993  -  SSL/TLS (normal password)
    smtp.mail.yahoo.com  -  port 465  -  SSL/TLS (normal password)
    I have tried changing the outgoing server to that below but it doesn't solve the problem.
    mail.btinternet.com  -  port 465  -  SSL/TLS (normal password)
    My questions are:-
    Has anybody else experienced a similar problem?
    Is anybody aware of any recent IMAP settings change that I need to apply to solve this?

    Hi Keith,
    The problem started for me something like six months ago. Originally it was a rare occurrence so clicking retry once every now and then wasn't a big deal, but as I mentioned I now get the time-out virtually every time I send a message. I appreciate the message is successfully sent first, but I can't just ignore it as I need to have a copy retained in my Sent folder for my records.
    Possibly the BTYahoo! servers that handle that function are much slower to respond now? I'll see if I can increase the time-out limit in Thunderbird. There is no time-out problem sending messages, just when saving the copy.
    Once in a blue moon I don't get the error message but there is still no copy saved in the Sent folder. That is very annoying when it happens. Luckily that is still a very rare occurrence currently.
    I'm really trying to establish whether this is a problem caused by my PC set up, or whether it's a problem with BTYahoo! email and there is nothing I can do at my end to fix it.

  • Workaround for Hotmail IMAP problems in Mail

    Am a new Mac user, migrating from the windows world, and I would like to share my experience with solving the issue Hotmail has with IMAP.
    I've been using hotmail for years, migrating from hotmail really is not an option, have too many resumes/accounts et al established with that ID to consider switching to another web presence. Yet, the problems that Mail has with Hotmail/Outlook was making me crazy. Kept getting unsecured SSL errors, inability to connect errors, and having to fruitlessly retype my hotmail password while trying to connect.
    Called Applecare and the technician recommended a variety of fixes, which proved to be unsuccessful.
    What did work, was going into hotmail on the web, and having hotmail forward all of my mail to my iCloud email address, disabling my hotmail account from Mail on my Mac mini and my iPhone 5S. Only issue I had was that old mail stored on the hotmail account was stuck there, so I just forwarded that stuff back to myself on my hotmail account and it was automagically forwarded to my iCloud account.
    The iCloud to Mail on the Mac and the iPhone connection is flawless and transparent.
    There are a couple of potential issues with this workaround that I can forsee:
         a) If either iCloud OR Hotmail have a maintenance outage/denial of service attack I will be unable to send/receive mail until they both recover.
         b) Risk of having Hotmail account close due to inactivity
              1) Either sign up for Hotmail plus at $20/year
                                 ~or~
              2) Set a recurring calendar notification to log into hotmail on the web every 6 months to avoid the 8 1/2 month hotmail account deactivation.
    This solution is a kludge, but it works.
    Chuck

    sorry to bump this, I'm completely stumped though! Any ideas from anyone?
    Kind Regards
    Mark

  • Mail 3.2, Gmail and iPhone POP and IMAP Problems

    This is a Mail problem but I am pretty sure it has something to do with the iphone as well....
    Here's the deal:
    Up until a week ago I used this setup:
    1. My gmail account has had pop and imap enabled for all mail and it kept the email on the server
    2. My mail client on my MBP C2duo on Leopard 10.5.2 was setup to retrieve email from gmail using pop
    3. My 1.1.1 iPhone was setup to retrieve email from gmail using pop as well
    4. Gmail account was being also synchronised between MBP and iphone through the appropriate tab in itunes.
    RESULT: mail would pop to both clients as new mail and I would have to mark it as read in each client. I like that cause there are certain messages I read on my MBP and some others on my iphone.
    About a week ago I upgraded my iphone to 1.1.3 and that's when the problems started:
    a) It appears that the iphone is now setup to gmail's IMAP by default. So I delete the account and create one manually to work as pop
    1. So now I have an iphone setup to retrieve with pop.
    2. My MAil client on the MBP is still set to pop
    3. Gmail settings remain untouched
    PROBLEM: Everything is setup as pop but acts as IMAP ?!!?!
    Whichever client gets an email message first that message will not appear on the other client.
    Basically if my iphone catches an emai while my MBP is asleep i'll never get it in my inbox on the MBP and vice versa
    Please help me out... It's the first time an Apple product makes me feel like a good ol windows user again
    FAILED SOLUTIONS:
    1. I tried deleting the iphone account and creating it from scratch making sure it's setup correctly
    2. I tried disabling IMAP from gmail's settings
    3. I tried disabling and re-enabling pop from gmail's settings
    4. I tried using gmail's recent mode that forces a download of all recent (30 days) mail
    5. I have repaired permissions, rebooted etc etc
    Nothing changed
    I have now deleted the gmail account from the MBP, re-created it and await while it re-downloads al 6000 messages before I try re-creating the account on the iphone but sth tells me it wont change anything.
    Sorry for the extreme length of this post. Any help would be appreciated

    But I'm not using IMAP. I never used IMAP and I do not want to use IMAP. The reason being that I know all about the problems you speak of.
    I just can't get POP working as it did before the 1.1.3 update. It's really frustrating

  • IMAP Problem

    I finally realized that I can force the iPhone to use the server's Trash and Sent folder and am VERY pleased with this. Unfortunately, now I have extra folders on my iPhone--they don't show up on my IMAP server from what I see. It seems that the drafts folder initially got setup properly but Trash and Sent did not. They defaulted to storing on the device.
    So, I have a "Deleted Messages" and "Sent Messages" folder that I do not want. They do not show up on my IMAP server and I don't want them, obviously. They just make me have to scroll on the folder list so it would be nice to eliminate them from the list--also so I don't accidentally use them.
    So, is there a way to delete (or create) a folder on an IMAP server from the iPhone? This would probably let me fix the problem.

    I really need a way to delete the folders because, like I said, they are local to the iPhone so it isn't even a matter of deleting folders from the server--which I really don't need or want because it could be accidental.
    The strange thing is that the drafts folder WAS picked up and used initially. If I could figure out why it was chosen and somehow get the other two folders to be chosen first, then it would be able to pick Trash and Sent without having to create its own local folders that I would then be unable to delete.
    I wonder if I renamed my Sent and Trash folder to Deleted Messages and Sent Messages, as the iPhone names the local folders, then it might pick the folders up initially without creating folders locally.
    I may just wait a while and live with it because these different techniques could create other problems. I'll just wait and hope Apple adds some abilities in the next version...which I hope they release an update soon with even more amazingness!

    I've already fixed this once with adding the "compliance.dll" lines that was missing from the "..exe.config" files. After applying UR 6 the error is appearing again and i don't know how to fix it this time..
    please advise,
    Peter

    Hi Peter,
    Can you use Outlook (via IMAP) connect to Exchange Server?
    If this is the same issue as you fixed before, do you follow the old way to have a try? per my knowledge, when Exchange install the updates, the configure file will
    be restore( any changed manually will be removed) .
    Thanks,
    Evan

  • Mailman / Postfix aliases problem?

    Hello, all!
    I've got mailman running, finally, after many hours of fighting with it. It is now to the point where it will accept new subscribers through the listinfo page, send them their confirmation, and accept a confirmation action by the user on the html page to do so. The list currently only has 2 members - the moderator and one test email account. The server is hosting many virtual domains. The list in question is in one; it is currently the only virt-domain that is using a mailman list.
    However...
    Attempts to send from the moderator to the list result in the following:
    <[email protected]>: host
    /var/imap/socket/lmtp[/var/imap/socket/lmtp] said: 550-Mailbox unknown.
    Either there is no mailbox associated with this 550-name or you do not have
    authorization to see it. 550 5.1.1 User unknown (in reply to RCPT TO
    command)
    OK, so it seems to me that Postfix is not correctly figuring out that the listname is not a hosted mailbox, but is indeed a list name, and thus never bothers to send it off to mailman. I'm guessing this means I'm missing 1 little thing or other in postfix's main.cf but I can't figure out what. Help?
    here is my main.cf:
    smtpdtls_keyfile =
    myhostname = my.fqdnname.com
    mailbox_transport = cyrus
    enableserveroptions = yes
    mydomain = sysop.com
    messagesizelimit = 104857600
    spam_enabled = yes
    virtual_transport = lmtp:unix:/var/imap/socket/lmtp
    virtualmailboxdomains = hash:/etc/postfix/virtual_domains
    smtp_principal = smtp/[email protected]
    virusdb_lastupdate = 2006-01-05 14:54:45 -0600
    mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8,MY.CLASS.C.0/24
    mydestination = $myhostname,localhost.$mydomain,localhost,my.fqdnname.com
    smtpdsasl_authenable = yes
    smtpduse_pwserver = yes
    smtpdrecipientrestrictions = permitsasl_authenticated,permit_mynetworks,reject_unauthdestination,permit
    smtpdpw_server_securityoptions = plain,login,cram-md5
    content_filter = smtp-amavis:[127.0.0.1]:10024
    ownerrequestspecial = no
    recipient_delimiter = +
    smtpdhelorequired=yes
    disablevrfycommand=yes
    alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases,hash:/var/mailman/data/aliases
    Any help would be appreciated. I've Googled my eyes out and keep not finding what I need.

    Also, what's the output of

    Let me be sure I understand your situation.  You currently have postfix setup with virtual domains and mysql.  You are successfully able to send/receive emails from your virtual accounts, correct?
    Correct.

    Correct. My domain in question is ryla9810.org which has one alias that forwards to my gmail account (phil@), and I need one mail list with a dozen members (team@). The forward works, but the maillist is causing me grief
    Thanks for all your input so far

  • Mail & imap problem

    Hi,
    I've upgraded from panther to tiger and now Mail on my imap account is very slow. I can't get my mail even if I do multiple synchronise or "get all my mail" !
    If I use Thunderbird I have no problem : it gets all my mail quickly.
    I remark that on certain imap folder Mail see some mails twice or more (i think Mail is donwloading mail although is already downloaded) !
    Is Mail begining unusable ?
    thanks.

    There are known problems with Mail 2.0 when an IMAP or .Mac account is setup to keep local copies of all messages. The problem can be avoided by changing the settings in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced to reduce the amount of work Mail has to do to keep the local data synchronized with the server.
    Set Keep copies of messages for offline viewing to Only messages I've read or, if that doesn't work, to Don't keep copies of any messages. Also, Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes should be disabled.
    After making the changes, do Mailbox > Rebuild on any mailboxes that don't display the content properly.
