Posting a movie file other than Quicktime

I have a couple of QuickTime movies on my site that work really well for people who own macs, however there are many people logging onto our site with a pc. The PC users are unable to view the QuickTime movies and many of them are unwilling to download and use QuickTime software. My question is: Is there an alternate file type that I can use to post my movies that will work universally for mac and pc users without sacrificing the audio/video quality that QT offers? Do mp4s work?

iWeb writes page code that only uses QuickTime. You would have to hand edit the html page and javascript page code to use Flash or WMP formats.
The Windows users that have trouble need only download and install the free QuickTime software to view your files.

  • Quicktime Pro won't open an MPEG movie file with the Quicktime icon

What am I missing? Not getting? I have several MPEG movie files that proudly sport the Quicktime icon, but the Quicktime app tells me they're not movie files.
If Quicktime won't open them, is there conversion software I can use?
    So much for productivity.

Didn't even consider it. I thought that because the file displayed the Quicktime icon and because I have Quicktime Pro, that Quicktime would play the file.
Unfortunately, this is a common misconception. However, now that you understand the problem, you can work on a solution. Basically, if by MPEG your are referring to common MPEG-2/MP2 content 'multiplexed" to an MPEG container, these can be played in the QT Player (or Front Row or iTunes) if you install the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($19.99). However, be advised that this is a video only component, so it does not make "muxed" AC3 MPEG-2 files playback compatible with the QT player. Luckily, if you do decide to install this component, the free MPEG Streamclip application will allow you to play or convert such files to any QT compatible audio and video format for which you system is configured. Or, if all you want to do is play MPEG-2 video files without investing in the QT component, then you can view them with VLC but may have trouble converting them to a QT compatible format. HandBrake will also convert them without investing in the MPEG-2 component, but greatly limits your conversion possibilities. I personally would recommend buying the component as Neil recommended since it offers the greatest flexibility for playing without conversion, as well as, the most conversion options for all normal MPEP-2 Program and Transport Stream files you are likely to encounter using QT 7 Pro and/or MPEG Streamclip depending on the specific source content what you want to do with the final files.

  • I suddenly can't watch .mov files with the QuickTime Player x?

I suddenly can't watch .mov files with the QuickTime Player x? There is always the message, i should look after new software! Can you help me?

Handy-dandy cut and paste to the rescue!
you need to install some other stuff to get the full file functionality back.
    Here's the list.
    Start with QT 7.6.6. - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
Get Perian, and install it. - http://perian.org
    then VLC, - http://videolan.org
    DivX - http://divx.com - and the
    Flip4Mac package from Telestream - http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac/
A52/AC3 downloader: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/21875/a52codec - In this installer package there is an audio A52Codec.component. DO NOT USE IT! Throw it out and use the one that is linked below.
This is what I've put into my system and so far I've gotten every file to run fine, even my oldest videos.
These are codecs you should see.
    In System/Library/QuickTime
         AppleIntermediateCodec.component
AppleMPEG2Codec.component* (*optional if you've bought it)
         DivX Decoder.component
         Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component
         Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
         Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
    In your Home/Library/QuickTime/
AC3MovieImport.component (you may or may not want this component, in some instances it causes conflicts. In my system, it doesn't. Who knows why? I don't.)
         Perian.component
For AC3 sound that is in most .mkv files, you need the A52Codec.component, this is the one you want, here: https://code.google.com/p/subler/downloads/detail?name=A52Codec.component.zip - unzip the file and put the component into the System/Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components
Go back to your Perian settings and in the Audio Output button, set it to 'Multi Channel Sound' - Ignore the message Perian puts up and select it.
By doing a 'Get Info' on your files and where it says 'Open With' - default them to the QuickTime 7 program. Perian no longer will work with QuickTime Player so you must have QT 7.6.6 and set it so it is the default for all the filetypes you use.
It works perfectly with QT7. So far I've gotten ALL my old videos to play.
.avi, .mov (with the AC3 sound), .wmv, .flv, .mp4 and .m4v. all run fine as do all the older formats.
    Good luck!
    Deb.

  • Option to move files rather than to copy them in "consolidate Project"

The option to move files rather than to copy them in "consolidate Project" seems to be missing in LPX. Bummer. Am I missing something?

    Hello Darlene.
I don't know if this is what you want, but you may try configuring your applications screen to handle specific file types in a way you prefer:

  • The document contains no posting lines with value other than zero

    Hi!
We are having problems posting a invoice in MIRO. When entering the PO number we receive the error message "The document contains no posting lines with value other than zero".
    What could be the problem?
    /Anders

    Hi!
The GR_BASEDIV is set in the PO. The PO is replicated from SRM where this flag has been set for no reason. Only GR and IV are set and we have implemented a note 1155266 so that Confirmation-Related IV will not be set.
How come it is set anyway?
    Sincerely

  • GM MIDI Synth other than QuickTime?

    Hi~ guys~
    I'm just wondering
if we can find any GM MIDI Synths other than QuickTime synth to use in Logic Pro 8.
    (not the external hardware synths)
if there are some,,, could you let me know what they are??
    thanks~

You can use SoundFont libraries (they are free).
    Search for Airfont (76Mb), FluidR3 (141.5Mb), SGM-180 (175Mb).
Download them (or their updated versions), uncompress with SFarkXT (http://melodymachine.com/) and place them in:
    /Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks
Then you will be able to choose which one to use as a default QuickTime synth or to use into Logic.
    cheers

If it's not MobileMe, use Safari to access the server directly and delet from there. If it is MobileMe, do the same thing but from your computer as the iPad Safari won't connect to MobileMe mail.

    1. Go to the document.
    2. Tap on share button.
    3. There should be an option "Mail"
    4. Tap on it and attach.
    Note:
    1. If you are checking your mail in browswer - this does not work.
    2. You cannot attach it to the mail you are currently composing.

  • Time Capsule with files other than backups

I have installed a 3 TB Time Capsule. I use it for Time Machine backups from an iMac and a Macbook Air. The Time Capsule has a sparsebundle for each of the Time Machines.
Question 1. If the Time Capsule runs out of space due to backups from the two computers what will happen? Will the iMac Time Machine delete files from the laptop sparsebundle if it is the first to do a backup after the TC is full?
Question 2. If I store files other than the sparsebundle on the TC will they be deleted to make space for the sparsebundles to increase in size? If so, is there anyway to prevent the non-Time Machine files from being deleted?
    Thank you.
    Mike

Question 1. If the Time Capsule runs out of space due to backups from the two computers what will happen? Will the iMac Time Machine delete files from the laptop sparsebundle if it is the first to do a backup after the TC is full?
No, it will only delete files from its own sparsebundle.
Question 2. If I store files other than the sparsebundle on the TC will they be deleted to make space for the sparsebundles to increase in size? If so, is there anyway to prevent the non-Time Machine files from being deleted?
Again No.. the TM has no ability to do anything outside its own sparsebundle.. it will not affect your files.. mixing up data and TM backups is not necessarily a great idea though.

  • Is there a way to create a file other than mp4 with iMovie under Maverick

Since the installation of the last version of iMoviei I noticed that the creation of a sharing file is only in mp4 type. Is there a way to create, for ex a mov file??
    Thanks for reply
    Daniel Goyens

    It doesn't seem like it.
If you share to iTunes you get an .m4v. Maybe you can open this in Quicktime and convert to .mov.

  • Everytime I download a file other than a pdf, it gets automatically deleted when finished downloading.

I am using Firefox 7.0.1. Shortly after a Firefox update, I noticed that every time I download any type of file except for .pdf files, they automatically get deleted as soon as they finish.
I tried downloading to my c: drive, a flash drive even a CD with the same result. Why does this happen? I also can't open any downloaded attachments I get in e-mails.
I can download files and or e-mail attachments via Internet Explorer with no problems other than it (IE) randomly locks up. I even tried restoring my system to a previous configuration with no luck. Can you help?

You posted this with a computer running a Firefox 7.0.1 according to the system details.

  • Old mov files pixelate on Quicktime 7.6

Just updated to Quicktime 7.6 and found that old mov files (over 5 years old) now have a lot of pixel distortion over the video during playback. This did not happen on previous Quicktime version as I viewed some of these files within the last two weeks.
Can anyone help with a fix for this?
Can I install an old version of quicktime just to play these older files?

Cinepak is completely out of date, and from 18 years ago.
Cinepak is a video codec developed by Peter Barrett at SuperMac Technologies, and released in 1991 with the Video Spigot, and then in 1992 as part of Apple Computer's QuickTime video suite. It was designed to encode 320x240 resolution video at 1x (150 kbyte/s) CD-ROM transfer rates. The codec was ported to the Microsoft Windows platform in 1993. It was also used on first-generation and some second-generation CD-ROM game consoles, such as the Atari Jaguar CD, Sega CD, Sega Saturn, and 3DO.
It was the primary video codec of early versions of QuickTime and Microsoft Video for Windows, but was later superseded by Sorenson Video, Intel Indeo, and most recently MPEG-4 and H.264. However, movies compressed with Cinepak are generally still playable in most media players.
Cinepak is based on vector quantization, which is a significantly different algorithm from the discrete cosine transform (DCT) algorithm used by most current codecs (in particular the MPEG family, as well as JPEG). This permitted implementation on relatively slow CPUs, but tended to result in blocky artifacting at low bitrates, which explained the criticism levelled at the FMV-based video games.
