Postscript file from InDesign

I'm trying to generate a postscript file from an ID file to then convert to PDF using Distiller. According to the instructions I have from an online POD service, I need to choose Adobe PDF as the PPD in the PS settings. All I have is Device Independent and a list of printers. Is Device Independent the same as PDF?
I'm completely new at this and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Printing to PS and Distilling is really old school - or some would say an archaic workflow, which suggests your print provider Priniting Workflow is years out of date.
Some will suggest that you find a new printers.
It's pretty standard in most modern workflows to use File>Export and choose your settings, the links above have the guide to making a pdf linked on the right of the web page.
if you choose File>Print and PDF for your printer type - go through the PDF settings accessed through the Print dialog box for making the PDF - again use the PDF guides that in the links above to make the correct settings.

    Check to see if you have two version of the AdobePDF Printer Driver.
    On Mac Acrobat when installed does not remove (in my experience) previous versions of the AdobePDF Print Driver.
    To cure.
    As a first Step open Disk Utility and repair permission - just repair don't even bother verifying.
    Next open Printer Utility and remove any and all instances of of AdobePDF. Quit Printer Utility.
    Next open Acrobat 9, go to help, then choose repair or replace. And check only AdobePDF Printer.
    That should install AdobePDF9.x Print Driver.
    Any Acrobat previous to 9 can use AdobePDF Printer Driver; but not the reverse. If you use with an older version, the older version simply doesn't use any new feature built in to the driver.
    Try Acrobat 7 and see if it willwork now.
    Also Acrobat 8 is the first version of Acrobat that is qualified to work with OSX.5.x;  7 may work but hasn't been tested with it.

  • PDF Files from InDesign to larger

    Hi
    I just upgrade my acrobat pro to 9.3.3. And im running Snow leopard.
    So - now the ps (print postscript) option is also gone for me.
    I have som old files from indesign, i printet at ps file and used my
    distiller to make the pdf file.
    Result = 168 kb
    If i export this from indesign, CS4
    I use same distiller settings
    Result = 860 kb.
    If i export this from indesign, CS4
    I now use smalles file settings
    Result = 290 kb.
    WHY is it not possible to make smaller pdf files direct from indesign.
    Also Press files get very large.

    Here's an article explaining some of the things stripped from your document when you use Distiller, compared to the Export function in inDesign

  • How do I print to a postscript file with InDesign CS6 without both extensions, .indd.ps?

    How do I print to a postscript file without an .indd extension in InDesign CS6? I choose Print, choose a print preset from my print shop and Save. The first time I tried it was blank (the Hide Extension was checked), so I tried to save and got a dialog box that said it cannot be saved as an .indd file (duh), to choose both or .ps. I chose .ps and it was fine, but every time I postscripted it gave me this dialog box until I unchecked Hide Extension. After I did that, every time I postscript it automatically saves both extensions. Not a big deal but it is annoying. I just want it to end with .ps like it used to. Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks!!

    I have no idea but I am incredibly curious...why are you doing this?
    Printing to postscript is a completely archaic workflow. Export to PDF
    instead.

  • Printing postscript file from IDcs3 for Distiller

    I have just upgraded my mac to a MP 2.8 quad duo and hence to Leopard. I am running OS 10.5.2 and ID 5.02 so it is all up to date. I have cs3 design premium installed.
    When running IDcs3 on OS 10.4 in order to create a pdf for 4 color print I would print a ps file from IDcs3. I select postscript file as the printer option and then in the PPD field choose Acrobat printer.
    Now, having migrated to Leopard, the Acrobat option is no longer available in the PPD field. I have reinstalled Acrobat Professional to see if there was a problem with the printer profiles being installed, but that did not change anything.
    I would have thought that selecting a PPD of "device independent" should work, but with that option selected I am unable to select the page size options.
    How do I create postscript files from IDcs3 for Distiller?

    WRT/ PDF/X-4, be aware that the final PDF/X-4 specification was published only one month ago by ISO. What is supported by Acrobat 8.x and InDesign 5.x does
    not fully comply with that specification. The next major releases of Acrobat and the Creative Suite will provide full PDF/X-4 support.
    Note that PDF/X-4 provides for full color-managed PDF 1.6 with support for live transparency, JPEG2000 image compression, and layers for (for versioning/editioning printing).
    Although the current release of the Adobe PDF Print Engine is not an officially compliant reader of PDF/X-4 files, PDF/X-4 is the ideal PDF variant for same.
    In terms of Distiller, there are no plans to provide support for PDF/X-4 in the Distiller simply because the Distiller doesn't support live transparency. Although one could conceivably ruin transparency by flattening and then validate the resultant PDF file as conforming to PDF/X-4 -- there is no requirement for live transparency -- use of flattened transparency in PDF/X-4 is certainly against the spirit of the standard we put together and by disallowing its production directly from Distiller or allowing InDesign's PDF export to flatten transparency going into PDF/X-4, we hope to dramatically improve the situation vis-a-vis rendering of transparency for printing by keeping transparency "live" and at its highest level of abstraction until RIP time.

  • PDF Bookmarks - Change Default Width When Creating PDF File from InDesign

    When creating a PDF file (from Indesign CS4) I automatically create the PDF bookmarks based on the InDesign document's Table of Contents.
    But by default the width in the bookmarks is always set at "Fit Page".
    Is there a way to change the default to "Fit Width" in Indesign before the PDF is created?
    It's too much trouble to change every bookmark in the PDF after it's created.
    Thanks for any help in advance!

    Thanks, Steve. I have actually previously done what "fogharty" suggests and it does work if I want to set the pages to "fit width" or a variety of other options. However, none of the options is inherit zoom which is what I, and many other from the sound of the thread, need and want. We want to respect our end users--not dictate how they must view our PDFs. Hopefully, Adobe will listen and make this option available soon.

  • Exporting files from InDesign to correct size

    Hi,
    Hope someone can help. I create multiple ads for many publications and have joboptions set up for each. Brill, saves loads of time!
    However, some require the ad to be cropped to bleed size but still include crop marks. How can I export a PDF to the correct size (trimmed to the bleed size with crop marks but without the white space you always get?!). For instance, can you specify the length of the crop marks to make them shorter or just specify the correct trimmed size without the white space?
    At the moment I have to specify a bleed of 10mm when exporting from InDesign and then crop 7mm off all round to leave 3mm of bleed in Acrobat with the crop marks (albeit small) remaining on the document.
    The ads are delivered via adsend so if they don't pass the specs, they are automatically rejected (gone are the days when someone REAL checked them over – sigh!)
    Please, please, has anyone got a solution?!!
    I'm using CS5 and Acrobat 9 Pro.
    Oh, and I can't seem to print a postscript file or PDF anymore since we got a new crappy printer!

    You cannot export from Pages to ID, though you could export to RTF and use File > Place... to import the thext, but you'd need to rebuild the layout.
    Placed PDF is essentially a graphic, so your pixelation may just be the default preview quality. Try View > Display Performance > High Quality Display (and you can set this as the default in the prefs). Keep in mind, though, that the imported PDF is not editable in ID.

  • Acrobat 9 Pro - Batch Create Multiple Files from InDesign CS5 files

    When attempting to batch create PDFs from Indesign CS5 files using Acrobat Pro 9's File>Create PDF>Batch Create Multiple Files ... option the operation fails with the error 'Could not find the application that created this file: [path to file] Please select a file created by an application that resides on your computer.' as shown in the screenshot below:
    Acrobat 9 Professional was bundled with Creative Suite 5 Design Standard so shouldn't this work? My machine is running OS X 10.6.7, Acrobat Pro 9.44 and InDesign CS5 7.04.
    Any help to solve this issue would be most gratefully received - this feature had previously saved me a lot of time on my old machine with 10.5.8, Acrobat Pro 9 and CS4.

  • PDF Files from InDesign much larger than Quark- Distiller, why?

    We've recently switched our publishing workflow for one of our pubs from Quark to InDesign, and are having issues with PDFs being really large. Previously, the pub would be PS'd out of QXP6.52 and then ran through our Distiller service at Press Ready quality settings. The resulting PDF files were 4-6mb (This is only a 2-page pub).
    Now, moving to InDesign, we PDF directly from InDesign (or I've also tried PSing and then Distilling), and using Press Ready Quality settings still -- the resultant PDF files are 15-16mb. Can anyone theorize as to what would create such a large difference between the two?
    This is using a few issues of the pub - not just one instance, as well.
    Thanks

    7. Yes, the file and links are using transparency.
    This is probably the answer.
    Recreate the page in InDesign with no transparency (as a test). This means all links are tiff or eps. No use of opacity or blend modes. No drop shadows.
    This is how it would have been in Quark 6, which did not support transparency (the newer kind anyway)
    Note: if you had overlying drop shadows in Quark 6 they would have had to have been bitmap tiffs.
    I also should mention: transparency is a good thing. There may be a way to get the file size down without removing transparency. Possibly you could use Acrobat to do this.
    Also note I posted a couple of updates on my previous post, they may or may not be relevant.

  • Opening files from InDesign CC in CS3

    Hi all,
    I have been using the wonderful InDesign CC on trial at work with the idea of purchasing it. On the 29th day of the trial someone in the office mentions we have CS3 on a laptop somewhere with all the correct licenses etc...
    I have now successfully got this onto my PC, but now none of the files open as it says I am missing a whole list of plug ins and it suggests I upgrade... I dont want to upgrade as CS3 does everything I need it to at this point.
    I have a copy of CS5 on my personal macbook. Can I open them in there and do something to the files so that they will open in CS3 on my PC or is there another way round it?

    You have to save any INDD file from CC in CC as IDML file.
    Open that IDML file in InDesign CS4 version 6.x.
    Save that IDML in InDesign CS4 again as INDD.
    Export that file in InDesign CS4 as INX file.
    Open that INX file in InDesign CS3 version 5.x.
    Save that file in InDesign CS3 as INDD.
    Realize that a lot has changed, and you have to make a bunch of work to correct these problems.
    Have fun.

  • Opening an .indt file from InDesign

    I'm trying to open a .indt file, when running the script from InDesign.
    So far I've only been able to do so when running the script from the ExtendScript Toolkit with the following code:
    var path="test/test.indt"
    myFile = File (path);
    myFile.execute();
    However, when I run the script from InDesign, nothing happens. I've also tried the following version:
    var path="test/test.indt"
    myFile = File (path);
    myFile.open();
    This did not work either.
    Please help me out.

    Hi try the following code. It will work
    var FilePath = Folder.decode(C:/Package/);  //where "C:/Package/" is the folder location
    var FileName = File.decode(a.indd); //where a.indd is the indd file name
    var fileLocation = FilePath + FileName;

  • Print postscript files from flash cs3 to get vector information

    I've been playing around with some dynamic flash paintings
    and would like to export the vector information. I've tried
    choosing "print--save pdf--save pdf as postscript" I installed
    Adobe's PS drivers. I set up a virtual printer on localhost using
    AdobeDistiller. This is not working for me.
    I witnessed flash exporting vector information this way on a
    pc, but can't seem to get this working on a mac. The pc user
    downloaded and installed postscript drivers from Adobe and used a
    similar method.
    I'm on Mac OS 10.4.11
    Any ideas? This has been frustrating me for some time.
    Thanks ahead of time for the help!

    There are several ways to do this.
    The easiest one, I think, is exporting a FLV file from the Render Queue, picking in the Outpit Module one of the "Same as source (Flash 8 and Higher)" FLV presets, modified manually just to enable the "Encode Alpha Channel" checkbox.
    Because of a known limitation in the Flash authoring app, which can only handle embedded transparency information correctly when done in a certain way, it's strongly recommended after settting the FLV encoding options that you set the "Color" menu in the Output Module to "Straight (Unmatted)". Otherwise you may get ugly halos around certain elements.

  • Extracting Word Files from InDesign

    I am looking for some advice. At my company we create paging files in InDesign, and after the project is completed, we need to extract an RTF Microsoft Word file of the text ONLY, maintaining all Word paragraph/character styles. We do this so that clients can edit the text in Word for future versions of the product. The Word file will be edited and then poured back into InDesign at a later time.
    Here is our current process:
    1. Open InDesign paging file. Create a new empty InDesign file.
    2. Copy and paste all text from original file into new file (which is cleaner - our files are usually VERY full of photos/margin items/art/footnotes), inserting text call outs for Figures and Photos. All margin text/footnotes go at the end of the Word file.
    3. Clean up file, stripping out formatting. Set everything as Times, 12pt, double space.
    4. Export to Word for final clean up.
    Basically this is an extremely time consuming process, which we are looking to speed up. Anyone know of any programs that could help us out? Plugins? Basically, we need something automated (wishful thinking) that could "read" certain styles in InDesign and perform an action on them, such as, grouping them together.
    Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks!

    I like the Text Exporter plugin, almost exactly what we need, however, since we have text frames all over the place on these pages, a lot of my text doesn't stay in order, however I think this is moving in the right direction. I'll have to look into this.

  • Is there a way to create a postscript file in InDesign for a certain page size without a printer?

    I need to set up a postscript file for my book to take it to print but I can set up the print settings for 11 by 17 in. paper. Is there a way to get around this?
    I am using a mac with cs6.

    Is your print service provider requiring a PostScript file? Normally, they would require PDF with any reasonably modern workflow.
    The print to PostScript Printer and Device Independent option is very limited. If there is a particular device your print service provider is using and requires PostScript for, they should be providing a particular PPD for you and thus, allow you to customize the PostScript for that device.
