PostScript file

whether or not it will be possible to produce a PostScript file from Business Objects XI 3.1in Windows printer or Unix printer?

Look at the javax.print package.
It's a good idea to check out the javax.print and binary formats
thread under the Advanced Language Topics forum. There's been a lot of problem with printing in Java. You might figure out how to navigate through them by reading that thread. - MOD

• How do I install a custom ppd to create postscript files in Windows 7?

I recently got a new computer with Windows 7 and installed my Creative Suite on it. I can't however install adobe's universal postscript driver which enables me to use my custom ppd for my printer (not an actual machine printer but the print company I sent my files to for printing). I can't find any postscript driver from Adobe that work with Windows 7. I hope thats not the case. I know in InDesign I can print straight to a postscript file anyway, but there is ppd box with that option to select your custom ppd's. I just have no way of installing my custom ppd. I would think this would be a big problem for others in the print industry (well for those in the industry that use PC's which are few), but I'm not finding any discussions on this online. Can anyone help?

There never was an Adobe PostScript driver for either Windows 2000, XP, Vista, or 7. What was posted on the Adobe downloads site was an installer to associate a user designated PPD with the standard Windows PostScript driver (PSCRIPT). That installer does not work on any version of Windows beyond Windows XP, 32-bit. Adobe has no intention of updating that installer.
Workarounds include installing a driver for a different PostScript printer and then editing or replacing the PPD file associated with that PPD file after it has been installed. Alternatively, you can develop the appropriate .INF file pointing to your PPD file for use by the Add Printer wizard. Such a solution allows you to name the printer or pseudo-printer whatever you want.

• Page orientation when combining multiple postscript files to a pdf file

Hi
I'm having problems with the orientation of my pages when I generate pdf's from multiple postscript files.
I have 3 postscript files that need to be merged into 1 pdf, and they contain a mixture of portrait and landscape pages.
To create the pdf, I use the following code (because i have lots and lots of pdf files to produce)...
/prun { /mysave save def
dup = flush
RunFile
clear cleardictstack
mysave restore
} def
(D:/example/fileA.ps) prun
(D:/example/fileB.ps) prun
(D:/example/fileC.ps) prun
... however, when I run the above code (by saving the text file into the /in directory of a watched folder), whilst I get a pdf, the page orientation isn't right. For some reason, the first few pages are oriented correctly, then after about page 7 everything is portrait no matter what.
The funny thing is, when I simply double-click on one of the postscript files (eg. fileA.ps), distiller changes it to pdf and the orientation is perfect for each file separately (fileA, fileB, fileC). Even when I run the above code for just one ps file it works. But as soon as I put all 3 sub-files together it doesn't orient properly.
I've tried activating and de-activating auto-rotate in the PDF settings, as well as the DSC options in the Advanced tab, and whilst these changes do affect the pdf I get when I simply double-click a certain postscript file, it seems to have no effect when I try to combine the 3 files with the code above. I still end up with the first few pages oriented correctly, then after about page 7 everything is portrait.
Hope someone can help.

Ok i successfully generated my PDF files.
Now I'm having difficulties merging them. I use a DDX file named LiveCycleInput.ddx
What I do (everything in LiveCycle Workbench):
1) FileReader to open the .ddx file as a document (successfully)
2) Store the read document in a process variable (successfully)
3) Assembler.invokeDDX with following arguments:
Document DDX = process variable (read in 2)
OutputResult = "AssemblerResult" processVariable which has type AssemblerResult as specified by the documentation
Errorlog
Everytime I run the process I get the following stacktrace in my server's logfile:
... 119 more
Caused by: com.adobe.internal.pdfm.CollateralNotFoundException: DDXM_S14017: A <PDF> source document is required, but no documents were found for {PDF source="testFileDoc.doc.pdf" baseDocument="true"}.

at com.adobe.internal.ddxm.blueprint.pdf.SourceSegment.addDocumentsForAssembly(SourceSegment .java:91)
... 125 more
The .ddx file is stored in the same path as my generated .pdf files are stored.
Content of my DDX file (full copy paste)
<DDX xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/DDX/1.0/">
<PDF result="testFileMerged.pdf">
<PDF source="testFileDoc.doc.pdf"/>
<PDF source="testFileJpg.jpg.pdf"/>
<PDF source="testFileOdt.odt.pdf"/>
</PDF>
</DDX>
Note that the DDX file is read from a network drive(!!) the source PDF files are in the same folder as the ddx file (hence no further path-links).
Adding network paths to the source & result pdfs does not change a thing.
All PDF Files apart from the result pdf fiile are present in that same folder
I consulted the DDX reference multiple times and this is the simplest ddx that should work ... but it doesnt.
Can anyone help me?

• Is there a way to create a postscript file in InDesign for a certain page size without a printer?

I need to set up a postscript file for my book to take it to print but I can set up the print settings for 11 by 17 in. paper. Is there a way to get around this?
I am using a mac with cs6.

Is your print service provider requiring a PostScript file? Normally, they would require PDF with any reasonably modern workflow.
The print to PostScript Printer and Device Independent option is very limited. If there is a particular device your print service provider is using and requires PostScript for, they should be providing a particular PPD for you and thus, allow you to customize the PostScript for that device.

• How to save multiple forms to a single postscript file

Hi All,
We have a requirement where we have to print 10 to 20 forms as a batch print each day.
What this means, is that at the end of the day, a single print operation will print all the forms.
The Client is expecting us to create a single postscript file for all these forms.
I need someone to explain to me the postscript functionality and how it is possible to save the information of 20 forms in a single postscript file.

• Missing page while converting Postscript files to PDF using Distiller 9.

Hi
Due to some incorrect hexadecimal code in the post script, one of the pages is not getting created in the full pdf. So, we can say that the page is missing in the complete pdf file.
Here is my snapshot of the issue:
1. Offending command issue on a particular post script data is coming up due to some incorrect hexadecimal data.
2. If I run the postscript through Distiller 8, report is getting generated without any missing data.
3. Whereas, if I run it throught Distiller 9.1.3, Distiller is ignoring the page due to following warning.
%%[ Error: typecheck; OffendingCommand: xshow ]%%
Stack:
41
( À
4. If I run the same Postscript file in Distiller 9.3 (latest version), issue is going away.
5. But I have another Report pdf with the same issue but this time with a different hexadecimal exception.
%%[ Error: typecheck; OffendingCommand: xshow ]%%
Stack:
49
(à øÀ øÀ øÿ€ üÿ€ üÿ€ üÿ€ üÿ€ þÿ€ þÿ€ þÿ€ þÿÀ þÀ þà þø?þ?ÿÿþ?ÿÿþ ÿÿþ ÿÿþ ÿýþ ÿùþ?ðà øÀ øÀ øÿ€ üÿ€ üÿ€ üÿ€ üÿ€ þÿ€ þÿ€ þÿ€ þÿÀ þÀ þà þø?þ?ÿÿþ?ÿÿþ ÿÿþ ÿÿþ ÿýþ ÿùþ ü%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
So, either way, even if I upgrade my version of Acrobat from 9.1.3 to 9.3, issue doesnt go away. I think the new Acrobat Distiller is buggy and introducing new problems when compared to Acrobat Distiller 9.
1. Works fine Distiller 8.0
2. More problems with 9.1.3
3. Lesser problems with 9.3 but I cant upgrade to 9.3 unless i see all the missing page problem going away.
Can someone urgently look into this?
Regards
Hari

I am calling Distiller using command line.
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Acrodist.exe" /f/Q/N C:\Reporter\debug\report.dst
report.dst contains the the names of the post script files.
(I have already contacted Distiller server forum and I was told to post the request in Acrobat forum)

• Dialog box size when saving a postscript file CS5 is huge.

When i save a postscript file, the dialog box that allows me no navigate to the place I wish to save my file is huge. About 10 inches wide and 3 inches high.
I have tried to resize this box, expecting that the last used dimensions would be remembered the next time I entered this box but I get the same huge overly wide and not deep enough box.
I hate resizing this box so I can see my sidebar. This never happened in CS3. CS3 honored the box as I sized it every time I saved.
What is wrong with CS5?
Where do I change this behavior.

Replacing preferences did not help. System updates did not resolve this behavior.
The other behavior I hate is when I open a document the application window enlarges to the maximum area on my monitor. The application window occupies the left edge to the dock on the right, just below the menu bar at top to the very bottom edge of the monitor.
Most other applications remember what the last window size of a document was when I saved and closed it.
What I end up doing EVERY TIME I OPEN A FILE is shortening the window on the right and bottom so I do not have my tool windows covering my document. I like Static tools, not auto hide.
As long as I am griping I'd like to know how to turn off the auto resize of the document view when I enlarge or reduce my window. I want the document to remain a constant size UNTIL I DECIDE to resize it.

• How do I print to a postscript file with InDesign CS6 without both extensions, .indd.ps?

How do I print to a postscript file without an .indd extension in InDesign CS6? I choose Print, choose a print preset from my print shop and Save. The first time I tried it was blank (the Hide Extension was checked), so I tried to save and got a dialog box that said it cannot be saved as an .indd file (duh), to choose both or .ps. I chose .ps and it was fine, but every time I postscripted it gave me this dialog box until I unchecked Hide Extension. After I did that, every time I postscript it automatically saves both extensions. Not a big deal but it is annoying. I just want it to end with .ps like it used to. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks!!

I have no idea but I am incredibly curious...why are you doing this?
Printing to postscript is a completely archaic workflow. Export to PDF

• Printing a PDF document within a postscript file

I know it is possible to print a PDF document from within a postscript file using Document Structuring Comments and Document Comment Extensions. Is is possible to print a single page PDF document multiple times as a booklet? For example I have a PDF document that is a page of graph paper. I want to print this PDF file 8 times in the form of a booklet. Is this possible and if it is how would I code the postscript to do this?
Thank you in advance
David

Where do you know that “it is possible to print a PDF document from withint a PostScript file using Document Structuring Comments and Document Comment Extensions” from?
PDF is absolutely not part of the PostScript language itself. Nor is there anything in the DSC specifications that provides for printing a PDF document from within a PostScript file.
Attached to this posting are the two existing pieces of documentation of DSC from Adobe. Neither references such a capability.
DSC are simply “comments” within a PostScript program file which may be used by preprocessing software or external applications for various puposes, especially associated with prepress actions and placing of EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) in other graphic arts documents.
Conceivably some implementor of some PostScript product may have provided some capability to embed a PDF file or to invoke the printing of a PDF file from within a PostScript file using custom DSC. However, this is certainly not part of the official PostScript language. I have also attached those specifications as well!

• PDF from PostScript file with hyperlinks/bookmarks

Is there a way to include hyperlinks and bookmarks when printing to Postscript file.
Direct Export to PDF creates a huge file size so I need to go the PostScript/Distiller route.

Would it not be possible to use the famous Acrobat Replace Pages featurebug/bugfeature here? (Hyperlinks on, and bookmarks to pages do not get replaced when you replace those.)
Something like:
1. Export to PDF.
2. Print and Distill.
3. Replace all pages in the document from step 1 with those from step 2.
4. Done.

• This PostScript file was created from an encrypted PDF file.

I have a postscript file which has been created from secure or encrypted (opening restriction) pdf.
Now when i use distiller to convert this postscript file to pdf then distiller cannot produce a pdf file.
The log file contains following text:
This PostScript file was created from an encrypted PDF file.
Redistilling encrypted PDF is not permitted.
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
1) Is there a way to convert this postscript file into pdf ?
I have a limitation that i cannot remove security from secure pdf.
2) Do distiller provide any settings which can be changed to convert
this kind of ps(from secure pdf) to pdf.
3) Can we provide password to distiller during process of conversion to
pdf.
4) If above methods do not work then is there a way we can
programatically use Distiller Api's for conversion of postscript (in case
of postscript created from secure pdf) to pdf
Like methods 'FileToPdf' etc.
Thanks in advance.

I am facing a similar problem.
My workflow dictates that I convert the input PDF job initially to PS and finally back to PDF. If the input PDF file is secure (it's not encrypted - you will still be able to open the document), the redistillation of PS to PDF fails while using Normalizer 6.0 && 9.0 libraries. If I use Normalizer 505 library, the redistillation succeeds. I have checked with the same generated PS on both Distiller 6.0 && 9.0, and both the versions fail to reconvert as well. I am a little surprised that 6.0 and 9.0 will fail to do something that 505 library manages.
Any suggestions?

To call them from outside the package, you have to prefix each procedure name with the package name, like this:

begin
gen_xl_xml.create_file(k_file);

• When you create a PostScript file you must rely on system fonts and use document fonts

I got this error:
"When you create a PostScript file you must rely on system fonts and use document fonts. Please go to the printer properties, "Adobe PDF Settings" page and turn OFF the option "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts."
This strikes me as bad practice. I only want to use system fonts and document fonts will muck me up.
That being said, I could not easily find a way to fix this with Acrobat Pro XI. I opened Control Panel (Windows 8) and found the printer and mucked around in the various ways to get to change the PDF settings (there are several ways, and some of them present the choices as bold and not just regular). I found two separate switches for "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts" and turned both off, BUT that did not work.
Frustrated, I went back to FrameMaker and clicked File > Print Setup and then for the PDF printer, Printer Properties. There I found a THIRD instance of "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts" that was set differently than the other two. This was the setting the error message meant. Change this one.
Thanks for the convoluted UI, Adobe. What a pain, but there is the answer for all who follow after....

> Windows 7 and Frame 7.2.
This is not a supported configuration and probably does not work, due (I'm guessing) to driver API changes from XP to Win7, which would affect generating PDF and Ps output. This would affect Save-as-PDF and Print-to-Ps+Distill (unless you have a newer version of the full Acrobat product).
As it happens, I'm going to attempt something similar: FM 7.0 on Win7 64 Pro. However, I'm going to install that old FM in "XP Mode".
XP Mode is a 32-bit virtual machine running actual Windows XP inside Win7. It is (now maybe "was") available for Windows 7 Enterprise, Professional and Ultimate (but not Basic, Home or not-so-Premium). When XP went off support life earlier this month, Mr.Bill may have taken down the ability to download XP Mode (or not, since some large enterprises are able to purchase continued support for XP at some great cost). XP Mode never was supported for Win8. There are other VMs for Windows available.
If XP Mode is still available, you also need a CPU that has hardware virtualization, which all recent 64-bit AMD processors do, but which is fused-off in many low end 64-bit Intel processors. AMD processors need a separate unobvious hot-fix patch installed before you do anything else about XP Mode.
