Postscript fonts in Windows 7

Have just migrated CS3 to a Windows 7 PC.
All of the post script fonts are unavailable in the CS3 programs - only truetype and open fonts show up.
All of the fonts, TT, OT and PS show up in other applications.  Any ideas?
Thank you.

Known issue. Place in the private Adobe fonts folder.

  • Adobe Postscript Type 1 fonts and Windows 7

I have a disk with Adobe Postscript Type 1 fonts ("Adobe Type Basics" that I purchased in 2001). The disk includes an install program that does not work on my current computer (Windows 7, 64). Can I get those fonts installed on my current computer, and if so, how do I do it. Step by step, please. Many thanks.

Although we at Adobe certainly do recommend use of OpenType font technology going forward and especially for new publishing projects for any number of very good reasons, Adobe does continue to fully support Type 1 fonts (FWIW, TrueType and OpenType fonts are every bit as much PostScript fonts as Type 1 or Type 3 fonts are) in all our applications as well as in our Adobe PostScript and Adobe PDF Print Engine products and has committed to do so for the indefinite future.
In fact, Adobe still does license and ship Type 1 fonts in fairly high quantities. Every printer sold with Adobe PostScript 3 by Adobe's OEM partners such as Xerox, Ricoh, Canon, Océ, EFI, etc. is accompanied with host software that includes the Windows and Macintosh host versions of all the Type 1 fonts that are also printer resident.
Actually, the problem that the OP of this thread was experiencing is that apparently, the Adobe Type Basics was built without the .pfm files that normally were shipped with all Adobe type packages for Windows. When ATM was required for installation of those fonts, since ATM had the capability of building .pfm files on-the-fly, this omission wasn't noticed at the time by most users (even I wasn't aware of it until today). Otherwise, there was nothing wrong with those fonts and there was nothing about them that was “showing their age.”
Unfortunately, the Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition is not a superset of the fonts in the original Adobe Type Basics product. Many of the font families of the original product were replaced by totally different font families. Updating to the OpenType-based product would not have solved the OP's problem without possibly needing to license a whole bunch of additional font families individually, possibly costing more than the $99 for the Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition itself. For existing content (including templates and artwork), it is not simple to move from Type 1 to OpenType without going through existing content and globally changing all font references. The OpenType versions of Adobe's font do not have the same names as the Type 1 versions - this was not an oversight, but done for good reason since there are differences between the products in encoding and metrics that could in some cases cause layout issues.

  • How can I get my new 10.8 macs to view legacy postscript fonts?

I've recently upgraded 3 work stations and I've come across a compatibility issue with the Windows Server connected via smb.
The 2 new machines, an Intel iMac i7 and a Mac Pro Xeon Tower, both shipped with OSX 10.8. When they are connected to the Windows Server (Small Business 2011) via smb all the legacy postscript fonts view as 0Kb.
The 3rd machine is an Intel iMac i5, but the OS was originally 10.6. It had been modified using the terminal commands from this support page :-
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4017?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
The subsequent OS upgrades to 10.7 and 10.8 haven't broken the legacy files when connected to the Windows Server on this MAC.
I've tried running the terminal commands on one of the new machines but it doesn't work. Has anyone come across this and have you solution please.

For it to show on the desktop check on Finders menubar.  Finder > Preferences > General > check CDs DVDs and iPods.  Do the Same in the sidebar tab if desired.

  • How do I install Postscript Fonts (.pfb) in OS X

    Howdy,
I'm a recent switcher from Vista to OS X, and I cannot for the life of me get any of my .pfb PostScript fonts to work on OS X? Its suppose to have built in support for it Like Windows but I am either doing something wrong or that was a lie!
All I have unfortuntely is the .pfb and .pfm files for my PostScript fonts.. do I need any other files? The pfb's on their own worked in Vista, so I'm just assuming that it should be the same for OS X right? I tried imported the fonts via the Font Book but I cannot select .pfb files, so I tried dragging the pfb and pfm files into Library/Fonts and still to no avail?
Any ideas on how I can get these fonts to work? or am I screwed?

No, PC and Mac Type 1 fonts are not interchangeable. A Google search on "pfb mac" will give you plenty of hits. Here is one idea for conversion:

  • PDF and OTF (Postscript) font issue (is there a PDF validation tool?)

    Greetings all,
I am experiencing a problem uploading any documents, which include embedded OTF (Postscript) fonts, to a Cloud based collaboration tool called Crocodoc. The problem/failure appears to occur during the document conversion from PDF to HTML5. It is important to note that this problem is not specific to Crocodoc because I have tested others (i.e. Zoho).
The problem is specifically with Madcap Flare and its recent support for OTF fonts. This is how I arrived at this conclusion:
    - Changing the embedded font to TTF only, the published PDF uploads to Crocodoc without incident.
    - It is not the OTF font. I have also tested this particular OTF font with other publication tools, including Microsoft Word and Adobe Framemaker; there were no issues.
    Other facts:
    - PDF files appear to function normally. It is only when I upload to Crocodoc-like apps when the problem manifests itself.
I subscribe to the Creative Cloud but Adobe Acrobat doesn't seem to have any validation functionality.
But here are some other tests that I have done:
    - Opened the malfunctioning PDF into Acrobat (no apparent issues)
      > Saved as optimized with all discard options turned on plus I ran the sanitize option. The new saved PDF still failed to upload.
      > Removed ALL text and saved a blank page. Still failed to upload to Crocodoc
      > As a verification, I created a PDF page (from clipboard) with Acrobat and saved that (one line of font using OTF font) - This successfully uploaded to Crocodoc.
      > VERY INTERESTING...using Acrobat to CONVERT the problem PDF to eps and then eps back to PDF - This PDF uploaded successfully to Crocodoc.
BUT there is something 'wrong' with Adobe Acrobat's conversion because it only converts the first page back into a PDF. WHAT?
Conclusion, as long as the PDF originated in Flare, it will fail to upload to Crocodoc. However, converting the document to .eps and then back to a PDF seems to have stripped away the 'bad' stuff.
What I am trying to learn is what exactly is causing the upload and conversion error?
Is there a PDF validation tool and might identify what is causing this conversion problem?
Sorry for the long post. Hopefully someone had the patience to read this and has an idea.
    Thank you

    Hello TSN,
    Test Screen Name wrote:
Picking just one point: PDF -> EPS -> PDF. This could not possibly do more than one page, because EPS is absolutely by definition a single page format. Therefore you must choose a page when exporting PDF to EPS.
    Thanks for your response.
I was thinking Microsoft... which has allowed multi-page eps files for years. But you're correct, this is normally an unsupported .eps format.
I solved the problem over the weekend by doing the following:
    1) I removed the suspect OTF font family but despite doing so, the folder still had two 'corrupted' but unused copies of an italic font. They refused to remove so I had to boot into Win7 SAFE mode to remove.
    2) After complete removal of the OTF font family. I reinstalled the OTF font *BUT* only from a different repository (oddly, this other OTF font set is slightly larger per font).
    3) Once installed, I tested with Flare, published and uploaded to Crocodoc SUCCESSFULLY. Yeah!
I don't have anymore time to test but the questions remain, such as, was it one or more of the following issues:
    a) Flare has a problem handling some OTF fonts or cannot error correct (the way other programs do) for marginal fonts or font errors?
    b) Was it the two corrupted fonts in the Windows/fonts folder?
    c) Was it the slightly different OTF fonts that I am no longer using?
    Take care

  • Postscript fonts not appearing in CS3 Help!?

I have quite a few postscript fonts installed on my Windows XP Professional 64-bit computer, but none of my adobe programs are showing them as available. I tried using my old Type manager deluxe, but it won't let me install it on a 64-bit system. I used the windows font installer to install the fonts. How do I get my creative suite to recognize the fonts?

Seems to be a known issue with 64 bit systems. I've seen it myself with
some fonts. You can place them in a private Adobe fonts folder and try
that but I've just taken to using the TrueType versions since my Type 1
fonts all came with TrueType also.
OpenType is the way to go for any new fonts, though.

  • EMBEDDING POSTSCRIPT FONTS INTO PDFS

Used Quark Xpress 3.31 on Windows 98/Millenium/2000, made ps file, distilled to PDF. Worked great. All fonts embedded in PDF. Files worked great for prepress. Can't update Quark because of maths program I use that won't work on later Quark versions and can’t get math program upgrade. Trying to update to Windows XP. With XP postscript fonts will not embed in PDFs via Quark 3.31/Acrobat Distiller 4. Fonts will only show in Courier on PDF, although using Word same fonts will distill and show in PDF preferences/fonts list – so fonts are working. Have tried Universal Document Converter 5.3 as straight PDF converter. Fonts show on PDF but not showing as fonts embedded in preferences/fonts in PDF. Trying Adobe Acrobat Pro 10 but does not seem to work either. I think it is an issue with Quark 3.31 and later Windows platforms. Any suggestions out there on problem/solution? I may have to be stuck in the middle ages with software. Thanks

I may have to be stuck in the middle ages with software
People have the best experience when their application software, their OS software and their hardware are moving forward together. But you've pretty much just stuck with what you have for the past 16 years.
I'd guess that the problem is that QuarkXPress 3.31 (which came out in 1996, according to Wikipedia) is probably incompatible with Windows XP (which came out in 2001).
Either you stick with what you have or you'll have to replace all your software. Assuming you want to stick with QuarkXPress, you'll have to find new math software which works with a later version of QuarkXPress. This will then require you to probably upgrade your hardware and update your Windows software. Since you waited so long, this will take some work.

  • Problems seeing Postscript fonts in CS 5.1 (Design Premium 5.5)

Help! I have installed dozens of PostScript fonts (via Type Manager), but they are not showing up in any of my Adobe programs. I have access to them in other programs, but none of the Adobe suite. What might be the problem? I have reinstalled the fonts, and restarted my machine (PC) but it did not solve the problem

Install them via the Windows font panel and make sure the font files are complete to begin with, meaning they include a vallid *.INF file and of course the PFB and AFM. The Adobe tools simply don't render them, because in their thinking they don't know the fonts evewn exist and it usually comes down to this... anyway, consider getting updated OpenType versions of your fonts. This is going to be a problem, either way. Some of them will produce incorrect glyphs in some apps and sharing work files with otehrs will be a pain...

  • Installing PS1 Fonts on Windows 7

    Hello,
I use a mac at work but a Windows 7 64-bit machine at home. I'm taking some work with me and I'm looking at the font files that I'll need and I see a bunch of PostScript Type 1 files and one .scr file. I was looking up how to install PostScript Type 1 fonts on Windows 7 and read that you need both the .pfm and .pfb files, but I don't see these here. First, what is the .scr file, and second, will I still be able to download these fonts on to my PC?
    Thanks in advance!
    Tom

Unfortunately, the format for Type 1 files for WIndows is very different from that of MacOS.
For Windows, the font file itself has the suffix .pfb (PostScript Font Binary) and the extended font metrics file has the suffix .pfm (PostScript Font Metrics). Both must be available for the font to be installed and used under Windows. Typically, the two files would be in the same directory. You right-click the .pfm file and chose the Install font option.
The MacOS versions of Type 1 fonts cannot be used under Windows. Typically the font foundry that has supplied you with the MacOS version would also have the same fonts in the Windows format.

  • Solution for Vista, missing Postscript fonts, & CS3

Just switched over 64-bit Vista (first time on Vista for me--no more ATM Lite) and found that even if I installed my old .pfm-conforming postscript fonts, they'd show up in everything but CS3.
I had followed Adobe's directions for Vista and postscript files, and installed by right clicking and selecting "install". All showed up in the Windows/Font directory, but the only PS font Photoshop saw was Myriad.
Since Myriad is Adobe's font, and was probably installed with CS3, I tried uninstalling all PS/Type 1 fonts from the Fonts directory. Myriad disappeared as well.
So I figured, no, Myriad must have been installed in the same place as the others.
Nonetheless, I tried dropping my postscript files (.pfm, .pfb. .inf for each) into Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Adobe/Fonts, and THAT worked.
Now all my postscript files function perfectly fine throughout CS3--Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.
64-bit related? Vista installs only .pfm files in the font directory but CS3 wants the .pfb or .inf files as well? No idea. But I do know Adobe's support docs were useless on this matter.

I did and got a friendly guy who apparently had never heard of the 2739 error. I was hoping to get some support here. In another thread I read something about holding the installation window until installation starts. I can try it, but I doubt I am quick enough before the error window opens.

  • CS3 Postscript fonts not visible when Installed with Suitcase 11.0 Vista Ult64

CS3 Postscript fonts not visible when Installed with Suitcase 11.0 on Vista Ultimate 64bit.
Truetype and Opentype work fine. I have searched through all the forums here multiple times, but not found a solution. The only workaround I found was to manually put the font files in c:/ProgramFiles(x86)/CommonFiles/Adobe/Fonts.
When I put any font files in that folder, they show up in CS3 for use, but not in windows apps. I thought I would make a permanent work around by placing all of my uninstalled font files in that folder, then use suitcase to install them from there. That didn't work because EVERY font in that folder is available to CS3 and turned on. Do they get installed when you put them in there?? It didn't seem like they were installed, and windows apps didn't see them.
These are workarounds anyway. My main goal is to have suitcase work so I can organize my fonts efficiently. Extensis blames the font and CS3. I have read that there are adobe issues with other font management software as well as suitcase. Any help would be appreciated.

Got mine FIXED here is what i did:
    Windows 7 64bit SP1, CS 5
Postscript fonts (comprising of *.pfb + *.pfm files) did not show up in any CS5 app, but showed OK in Word, Excel, Notepad etc.
Tried  activating through Suitcase Fusion 2 and also through FontExpert 2009 -  but neither of them made the fonts visible in CS5 apps
    1) open Start Menu/Control Panel/Fonts
    2) on the sidebar there is "Font settings" item
    3) set the settings as i did
[    ]  Hide fonts based on language settings
[ x ]  Allow fonts to be installed using a shortcut (advanced)
    FIXED mine,
now i can use Suitcase Fusion 2 to install any PFB/PFM fonts without any problems...
PLEASE IF THIS WORKED FOR YOU TOO, LEAVE A MESSAGE HERE SO OTHERS KNOW IF THIS FIX IS 100% WORKING

  • Windows7 x64 and photoshop not recognising postscript fonts

The company I work for is looking to Rollout Windows7 x64 with CS5 using Universal Type Client v2.1.3.4 for our font management but have hit a snag.
When using Photoshop (both x32 and x64) and Flash, only opentype and truetype fonts are available (ie postscript fonts don't appear in the application font menus). The vast majority of our fonts are postscript so this is becoming a major issue holding back the rollout of Windows7.
We've tried turning off Hide Fonts but that made no difference.
Has anyone else seen similar or know of a fix so that postscript fonts will appear?
    Many thanks in advance

    Thanks for the response.
However, there are a number of problems with us dumping our postscript fonts and updating them to OT and TT.
    1. We're a print media company that sends a lot of print advertisements to newspapers all over Australia. These newspapers won't accept "jobs" unless they are done using postscript fonts as their 5-10 year old RIPs are still using postscript. Unfortunately, this is beyond our control.
2, The price of re-purchasing the fonts. Many of our postscript fonts were purchased through Adobe who (in Australia) say that we need to purchase the Open Type or TrueType versions of our postscript fonts - if they exist. Given we have 200+ desktops and we're talking about 2500 fonts, combined with Adobe Australia's pricing model for fonts, we're talking about some serious money here (a few hundred thousand easily).
The postscript fonts work fine with InDesign CS5 (on Win7 x64) and with our various printers, nor any errors - it's just they don't appear in Photoshop or Flash. We can't just add them to the Windows Fonts folder as they are then all active which can have a negative impact on desktop performance.
Our Apple Macs running the same version of Creative Suite with the same version of Unversial Type Server with postscript fonts don't suffer the same issue with photoshop or flash.
Is this just a Windows 64 bit issue? Is it an Extensis issue? Is it something do with Adobe products on x64? Or a combination of the 3?

  • RemoveFontResourceEx with the FR_PRIVATE flag doesn't release OpenType PostScript font files

This behavior exists with OpenType PostScript fonts. When you double-click on the .otf file, the font viewer will identify the font as having PostScript Outlines.
    1. Call AddFontResourceEx(<myfontfile>, FR_PRIVATE, 0) to install your font.
    2. Use the font.
    3. Call RemoveFontResourceEx (<myfontfile>, FR_PRIVATE, 0) to uninstall your font.
    4. Try to delete <myfontfile>. It's locked by csrss.exe.

    Hi costask,
Thanks for posting in MSDN forum.
I downloaded a sample using RemoveFontResourceEx at here:
    http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/42041/How-to-Use-a-Font-Without-Installing-it#addres
Then I download a .otf font file and use it in above sample. On my side, windows 8.1, I can delete the .otf file after I close the sample application. So please show us some code and details.
Does this issue happens only with specify .otf font file? Or all the .otf file would be cause this issue? How and where do you use RemoveFontResourceEx? It would be better if you have a sample to reproduce this issue.

    5. reboot
Done, now all fonts in window without ClearType and used that we indicated.
But in metro it's not work cuz some of elements is buged and changed to squares
There are some programs like http://www.ilovefreesoftware.com/09/windows8/change-the-default-font-in-windows-8-windows-8-font-changer.html in internet. But how i see it's don't change all fonts.
How to cahnge all fon'ts in windows 8.1 to Tahoma 8 for example?

This is supposed to be a better program than Win 8.
Did someone from Microsoft Marketing tell you that?  Maybe a fanboy?  :)
In all seriousness it's not better in any obvious way than Win 8, nor is it really any better than Win 7.  It can be tweaked to be just about as good.  And to be fair, it's stable.
I mean yes, we all expected Win 8.1 to be better than its predecessors
    - software releases are supposed to give you some value, some good reason to upgrade - but that kind of goes away when the software maker feels they have a captive audience as Microsoft does, and especially when they still have plenty of businesses
buying Win 7, which pays their bills.
But like it or not, removed choices or not, apparently Windows 8 is here to stay.  Joshua up above says "You fail", but have they really?  Once you're patching it up to make it usable they've already got your license fee, and your
alternatives to running Windows are what, exactly?
