Postscript Printer Description file rejected as non-compliant?

Hi,
I wish to make some local changes to my printer description. I read in the documentation, that I would be advised to use a customization file.
I have tried to use the minimal example given in that document, but my OS (SuSE 11.3, via the YaST/CUPS utilities) rejects it as "non-complient"?
This is my customization file:
*PPD-Adobe: "4.3"
*%My local customization file. Filename: custom.ppd
*Include: "default.ppd"
*%End of my customization file
The file referenced in the *Include: statement is in the same folder as the custom file (/etc/cups/ppd).
Any suggestions will be most welcome, Martin

Quite frankly, I don't know of any standard software that supports that feature of the PPD specification.

  • Where do I find the Adobe pdf 9.0 printer description file and how do I install it?

Where do I find the Adobe pdf 9.0 printer description file and how do I install it? Operating system is Windows 7 and I have Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 installed. Adobe Acrobat X Pro just updated to version 10.1.8

    Hi. Thanks for the replyl
I'm in prepress, working mainly with Quark XPress for advertising files and with Word, Photoshop, everything, for many years. My older computer is the workhorse with Quark 6.5 and CS4 and OSX 10.4.11. Everything is set up for me to produce PDF x1a files by printing .ps files from Quark and Word, and InDesign.
My newer computer, OSX 10.9.4, must now be used to a greater extent. So I have Quark 9 and 10 and now Creative Suite for the Cloud. But I don't have any Adobe PDF printer which I select when I print .ps files and place into my Distiller Watched Folder. I by pass selecting the Adobe PDF printer in Word and just print straight to .ps. The .ps file just sits in the Watched Folder and no longer flows into Distiller, processed and out. Is this the way of the future? I just want a smooth, fast flow for PDF's. I want them to be PDF x1a compliant for hi-quality printing.
Thought you might help to give me info as to how one uses Distiller (or not) with the new operating system and latest programs. Can't seem to find any info as of yet by searching the Adobe FAQ's and the Internet in general.
    Thanks alot.

  • Adobe Acrobat 8.....Printer Description File install??????  HELP!!

When I go to print a PDF it says: AdobePDF 8.0 Printer Description File is not currently installed. A Generic PPD will be used instead.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat 8 Pro but it keeps saying it. I need help, I need to make PDF for job that has to go to press.
    Thanks!!

    Hi,
I have had the same problem, I have made sure the ADPDF8 file is in the macintoshhd/library/printers/ppd/Contents/Resources/folder and have pointed PPD manager to see it, it picks up all the printers installed (loads by the way?) but not the ADPDF8 file - although it is in there!?!
I have to revert back to the default PPD manager to see that and then it only lists the Generics and not any PPDs for the printers installed.
    Please help?

  • Postscript printer driver files not working.

When I download the postscript printer driver file to my mac I get a .sea file. The installation instructions say to copy the "PDFPlugIn file and the Acrobat Distiller (PPD) file" into the extensions folder. But I cannot get the .sea file to do anything. Stuffit expander won't expand them and the .sea file in the extensions folder doesn't seem to do any good.

I think we should try to get a different PPD than that one.

You can download the Acrobat 9 PPD for use with InDesign/Illustrator to help with your Postscript file output.
You can substitute the InDesign file path with the Illustrator one to duplicate the steps.
In the end though, I honestly had to select "Other" in the PPD selection and direct to it manually.
This way it's just a pure PPD, not a SEA file.

  • How to I add ADPDF9 PPD to the printer description file in InDesign CS6?

I am having problems creating a clean PS file for booklet spreads and was advised to add ADPDF9 PPD to the printer description file in InDesign CS6. Can someone please tell me how to do this?

@Ihatecomputers – yes. Quite simple, if you have the PPD file at hand:
    On Max OSX:
    1. Go to Applications / Adobe inDesign CS6 / Presets
    2. Create a folder with the following exact name: PPDs
    3. Copy ADPDF9.PPD into that folder
    Restart InDesign.

  • No PostScript Printer Description in 10.7 Lion

I have a new Mac that's running OS 10.7.2 Lion and I just installed CS 5.5 Design Premium. When I try to print to a PostScript file from InDesign, there's no PPD available so I can't choose page size, orientation, color space, etc. How do I install PPDs and where do I get them? (Why didn't Acrobat install them when it installed the program?)
    Thanks.

  • Exporting pdf "acrobat distiller printer description not found" ERROR!

I just upgraded my g4 to tiger and I am running quark 5 on it. I can no longer export pdfs. I get an error saying "acrobat distiller printer description not found." I am stumped and I NEED to get this working!!
Anybody who knows how to fix this please let me know!
    Thanks

You may need to re-install Adobe Acrobat Pro, assuming you need the functionality of Acrobat to create PDFs. To create simple PDF's there is a PDF menu on every print dialog box that does not require the Distiller printer description file.

  • Printing EPS on a non-PostScript printer

I'm using a package that generates graphics as EPS files. I need to embed these into MS Word - no problems so far! I have a DeskJet 990CXi (a non-PostScript printer) and can't find a way of printing from Word. I installed GutenPrint this morning; it installed fine, but the instructions on how to add it as a printer did not work on my system (10.4.5) - the instructions said there'd be an "Advanced" option, but it doesn't exist on my system! Any advice gratefully received, the easier to understand, the better!

I've found a workaround (more on that later), but a description of what I wanted to do: I have MS Word and I was importing EPS graphics into it. Word (v.X) would not print the EPS graphics on my HP printer, it would just print a low-res tiff graphic that was included in the EPS file, not the high-res EPS. I'd be interested to know how I could have got Word to print the EPS on my deskjet, might be useful for the future. If I had a pure PS or EPS file I don't think there would have been a problem; I think the problem was that the EPS was embedded in a Word document. I then installed gutenprint and, on my iMac, I could not get the "Advanced" option even though I was pressing the keys described in their help file. Thank you for the info on how the behaviour has changed in Tiger. I subsequently installed usbtb and things started to look a little more promising; it could see my printer. When I tried to print, the print queue kept stopping. This morning I've deleted gutenprint and usbtb as I no longer need them: I found that I can import the EPS graphics into Pages and they are converted automatically into PDF and are then scaleable etc in Pages and print with excellent results! Interestingly, importing the converted PDFs into Word gives really poor results. So, I'm going to use Pages to create my document and print to my deskjet using the standard Mac drivers. Thank you for taking the time (a) reply to my message and (b) to read this long message!

  • How can I print to file (simple output) from the print dialog? Not PDF or PostScript

    Hello
I do quite a bit of work in virtual terminal (SSH) and I tend to pull enormous amounts of data that need to be saved to a *.txt file. This needs to have ZERO formatting, as it is simply data extracted from a data base (CSV, tab delimited, etc). This information is then formatting through the use of other applications (excel, access, etc). By zero formatting i mean, no text wrap, nothing! It needs to be a text based pure database output.
I cannot use Print to PDF
I cannot use Print to PostScript
both of these include formatting, and erroneous data that would require me many hours to clean up the data by hand. On a Windows based PC you can simply install a "Print to File" printer through your printer setup menu.
I've spent many hours searching online and other seem to need this same exact type of output.
The closest thing i've been able to do is create an automator file that upon printing converts the PDF into a text file. This doesn't work as it retains the formatting per the original PDF document. This also doesn't seem to help as some outputs are 30mb in size.
If anybody could assist with this that would be awesome. Thanks!

  • PDF files scanned at B & W print to an HP 2055dn Postscript printer as white on black

PDF files scanned at B & W print to an HP 2055dn Postscript printer as white on black. Non postscript printers print the same file correctly. This is the case with three different scanners. Scanning the same sheets into greyscale prints fine with all printers.
HP claims it is not a problem with their printers. Someone from Fujitsu (makers of Scansnap) said to "
Verify that Advance Emit Transfer (print correction function for the Mac print table) is unchecked. Go to Print > Advanced Emit Transfer Function and click to uncheck. " but I can't seem to find anything like that at all.
I really prefer to scan in B & W, as I have to scan several hundred pages and the resulting file is both smaller and higher quality than the grayscale files, but I can't print them at home; I have to use the printer at work and that really isn't appropriate.

    Hi,
Can you try some experiments please - or tell us if you have tried them.
    1) Load a new image (one that hasn't been saved before) into the editor and without saving it, try printing from the editor. It is important that PSE hasn't saved it.
    2) Load any image into the editor and do a Save for Web (you may have to reduce the size) in JPG format and see if you can print that JPG either from PSE or another program.
Please let us know the results.

  • PDF file looks fine on the monitor, but paths bond in print in both PS and non-PS printers.

    Hi,
I have a printing from Illustrator PDF problem. I've got Illy CS4 in which I have a rather huge file with a map and I'm tring to print pieces of the map. The PDF looks fine on the screen, but there are straigt lines on the print leading from one end to the other of two longest paths in the file.
The problem occurs when saving through Scripts to PDF, Scripts to Poscript in Illustrator CS4 (with all updates) and CS5.1. I also went to a friend who is using CS5 and a PDF made with it also had paths bonded. The problem doesn't occur when saving the file to a low version of Illy, opening it in Corel X4 and printing from a PDF made in Corel. Funny enough I also made a multipage A3+ print of an older version of the file and two of the lines showed up on the first artboard, none on the middle one and only one line in the third one (see the photo below).
Guys at the printers and more advanced Illustrator users I've asked for help said the've never seen anything like this and have no idea what the problem is. Accually, anyone I know hasn't got a clue of what the problem might be.
    Scans of test prints:

Any ideas of what I can do to print this properly? I'm pretty far from being an Illustrator expert and I ran out of ideas for fixing this and would really appreciate help...

    Hi Scott,
Thanks for your reply. Print screen of the image I'm supposed to be getting in print, that is my PDF: http://imageshack.us/f/692/printscreenu.jpg/
In the first jpg below are the only lines which are supposed to be printed (marked in red). The problem is that apart of what I'm supposed to be getting in print (print screen of the pdf above), I'm getting the lines I've marked in yellow in the second jpg below and which are not drawn in my .ai file neither in PDF. They show up in print only.

  • Install Non-postscript print on Solaris 10 x86

I tried to setup a print queue on solaris 10 x86 for a Brother HL-1230 non-postscript printer which attached to Linksys EPSX3 print server parallel port 1 (L1).
    The network configuration as followed:
    EPSX3: 192.168.2.250
    Solaris box: 192.168.2.170
    /etc/hosts:
    192.168.2.170 neptune
    192.168.2.250 epsx3
I used the printmgr to setup my print queue. In the destination field I typed epsx23:L1 and pick up the printer drive by model number using ppd file.
I'm able to use the print queue to print text file, eg. /etc/hosts.
However, I didn't get any ouput from web browser. When I print from the PDF viewer, it complained there is no supported postscript printer.
Did I do something wrong in the setup? When I used the lpstat -p command to see the print queue status, it return nothing. Is there anything wrong with the print server daemon?
    Thanks.

Hi I have one more doubt, if you can help-me.
    I set PATH like this:
    #PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH; export PATH
and work, but if I restar the machine I need do set PATH again: #PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH; export PATH.
Have any way to save this?
And I have the same problem with:
    #BOOST_ROOT=/xtras/boost_1_34_1
    Thanks#

  • Can I print a PDF to a non-postscript printer?

    We're looking at purchasing this:
    http://www8.hp.com/us/en/large-format-printers/designjet-printers/t520.html
But HP said that it will not print PDF since it's not a postscript printer.  Instead they recommend a more expensive model which will cost $2,000 more.
Do you have experience with this?  We want to use it for commercial plans.

That depends on the program, but if it's Preview, go to Page Setup... under the File menu. Select the appropriate paper size there. Then go to File > Print... and do a Preview. If the content does not fit on the page, some printer drivers will have a Scale to Fit setting. If there is none, go back to Page Setup... and manually adjust the Scale until it fits nicely when you do a Preview.

  • Can't print to a non Postscript printer on Mac

How do you get inDesign to print to a non postscript printer (HP laserjet 1200). Running CS3 on Mac 10.4.11
iD will not let me sellect the printer but defaults to Postscript file.

A quick way around printing to any non-PostScript printer is to export or distill a PDF and print that.
I've used this trick for years to print "colour proofs" on various different inkjet printers.
