Potental switcher with some Mac questions...

Hey all, I'm an XP user who is thinking of buying an iBook. I'm a college student, so having a laptop to take to class and school would really be a great plus for me. I've tried out iBooks at my local Apple store and I've done some initial research, but I still have a few questions. I'm hoping that somebody here will be nice enough to help me out at least a little bit.
I currently have a desktop PC with Windows XP running. Since I divide my time between this computer and the computers at my college, I have a folder marked "Active Files-Spring 2006" on the desktop of my PC. I have copies of these files in two other places, a Zip drive (the computer is old) and an iPod Shuffle that does duty as a flash drive. Since I use the computers at the school more than my PC, I mainly use the files on either the Zip or the Shuffle as the main files (what I start the files from) and use the folder on my PC as a backup. When I change a file or folder, say in the Shuffle, for example, I then use the in-folder menu to make copies to both the Zip and the folder on my PC.
My question is this: in Tiger, is there an easy way to perform a similiar operation? If I had an iBook, I would then reverse the way I operate: The files on the computer would become my main files, with the Shuffle acting as a backup. Can I create a folder that holds all of my active files and place it on the right side of the dock? If I can do that, can I just copy and paste files from that folder to my Shuffle? I understand that if I drag and drop in between folders on different disks, it makes copies, whereas if I drag and drop between folders on the same disk, it moves the files. Is this correct?
PC   Windows XP   Thinking of switching...

Hi, nathan. Welcome to the Discussions.
FYI: When asking multiple questions, it helps to number them individually. That way someone can respond without quoting the text so that their answers relate directly to your specific questions.
1. You wrote: "My question is this: in Tiger, is there an easy way to perform a similiar operation?"Sort of.
2. You wrote: "Can I create a folder that holds all of my active files and place it on the right side of the dock?"Icons in the dock are actually aliases, ala shortcuts in Windows parlance.
You'd create a folder, say in your Home folder, called "Active Files" and keep your active files there. You'd then drag the icon for this folder to the Dock to have quick access the "Active Files" folder or its contents via the Dock.
One does not copy/move files out of the folder in the Dock. One places a folder's icon in the dock to quickly open the folder, or open a file in the folder, or add files to the folder.
If you want to copy/move files between "Active Files" and your Shuffle, you'd click "Active Files" icon in the Dock, which will open the real Active Files folder and then make the copy/move operations you desire from the real folder to the Shuffle.
You wrote: " I understand that if I drag and drop in between folders on different disks, it makes copies, whereas if I drag and drop between folders on the same disk, it moves the files. Is this correct?"Yes, but there's an important difference between how Windows and Macs work in this respect. Let's say you have a folder named Project in the Active Files folder and a copy of the Project folder on your Shuffle. In Windows, as I understand it, if you drag Project from the Shuffle to the Active Files folder on the PC, it essentially copies the changes on the Project folder on the Shuffle to the Project folder within the Active Files folder on the PC.
In Mac OS X, if you dragged the Project folder on the Shuffle to the Active Files folder on the iBook, it would warn you that you are about to replace the Project folder within Active Files with the Project folder from the Shuffle. If you approve this action, then the Project folder in Active Files would be completely replaced by a copy of the Project folder copied from the Shuffle.
A number of Windows users unfamiliar with how this works on a Mac have been surprised when they thought that only the differences would be copied, as opposed to it being a complete replacement. Mac OS X uses the literal interpretations of the words Move, Copy, and Replace.
Good luck!

  • Two Switches with same MAC+Priority running STP

    Hi
what will happen if two switch with same MAC-ADDRESS and same STP priority will run STP , how will elect to the root bridge ???? how the STP process will handle this situation?
    thanx

Well, first off, no two switches (or switchports) will have the same MAC (if they do, you're buying switches from the wrong, very bad place).
Every port of the switch will have (at least) one MAC of it's own.
Given the same priority for all switches/bridges on the LAN, the lowest switch/bridge MAC on the LAN will win as the root.
VLANS take on the MAC of the administrative interface ("CPU"): i.e., xxxx.xxxx.5000, the first port (i.e., fa0/1) is xxxx.xxxx.5001, the second (fa0/2) is xxx.xxxx.5002, and so on
If you do a "show interface", the MAC / bia is displayed in the second line.
    Good Luck

  • Noob with some iweb questions...

Let me clarify - im not a noob when it comes to mac & computers in general, but when it comes to web pages, how they're made, & hosted etc i have no idea!
I have been using iweb08 to make my web page for my business. Its turning out really well but there are a few things i'd like to know...
    1. Can i add any flash (or moving) menus? nothing too complex but i really like those menus that expand with drop down boxes etc
    2. My business is a DJ/entertainment business & id like to add some music (my own productions) to some of the pages. What is the best way of doing that?
    3. Protection: how do I make sure my site doesnt get hacked? how is iweb security?
    4. Google searches - how do i optimize my site to make sure it comes up well in a google search
    5. Any good tutes around that may answer these questions & more? Free is good
    thanks in advance

  • Please help me with some backup questions....

After suffering through two hard drive failures (not my main drive, fortunately), and being frustrated with trying to keep everything backed up, I'm taking a fresh approach to everything and I plan to do the following:
    1.  Purchase a new, 2 TB hard drive (enterprise class - Can you guys recommend a reliable one?) and clone my existing main hard drive to it.
    2.  Purchase a second identical drive and install it in bay #2.
    3.  Likely purchase G-Technology's G-Safe with Raid 1 capability.  Likely 3 TB just cause.
    4.  I'll keep my current 1 TB Hitachi Deskstar in the 3rd bay.  It serves only my Sonos music system.  (I wanted a separate drive for that so my regular drives weren't always running.)
So far so good.  I plan on putting all my files on the one main 2 TB drive.  (Formerly roughly 500 GB of music was on a separate internal drive, the one that's died twice now. Seagate Barracuda FYI.)  I'll then clone the main drive to the identical drive in the 2nd bay and make it bootable as well.  That's backup #1 and I plan on having it also updated regularly.  (Incrementally, not a complete erase and rewrite, but still keeping it bootable.)  I'll then hook up the Raid 1 drive and clone the main hard drive to that as well, also making it bootable.  That will give me backup #2 and #3 (through mirroring).  These drives will be backed up less often and when not being used, will be stored in a fire proof safe in the garage.  So far so good, I think.
What I'm stuck on is what software to use for doing the cloning and more importantly, the backups.
For the cloning, I understand I can simply use the Restore function in the Disk Utility.  Is this correct?  Or am I better off using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner?  If so, which one?  And why?
For the regular backups, I have been using Retrospect but frankly, I'm less than impressed with their interface and I've never liked the fact that even if the backups aren't compressed, I can't see the files unless I do so through Retrospect.  I can't just go to the backup drive and view the files.  They're all hidden in the one Retrospect icon.  So, I'm considering the following:
Time Machine:  However, I was less than impressed with it in the past as it seemed to completely fill whatever drive I pointed it to and then it would fail to backup.  I never could figure it out that well.
SuperDuper:  I was just checking them out and it seems that it's not only a good cloner, but will also then keep that clone up to date and bootable on a regular basis.  It really sounds like it's what I need.  And the screen shots I saw on their site seem pretty well thought out and explain a lot.
Carbon Copy Cloner:  I know this app has been around for a long time, though I've never used it.  I'm presuming it's good for cloning a drive onto a larger drive, just as SuperDuper is, but can it do scheduled backups of that clone like SuperDuper can?
And in all cases, I want to keep both the second internal drive and the external RAID drives backed up from their original clonings.  Can any of these programs handle ongoing backups to two or more destinations from the same source?
And finally, a last question or two:
To repeat my first question, who makes a really reliable enterprise class drive?
And has anyone had any experience with G-Technology's G-Safe with RAID 1?
Thanks much for all your help.
Oh, here's my system:  Mac Pro tower, 2008 2.8 GHz, 10 GB ram.  Dual Intel processors.  Currently 10.5.8, soon to be 10.6.8.

Hitachi and Seagate both make enterprise class drives. Just visit their websites to find models.

I don't know what your desires are for backup redundancy, but I would create a two drive mirrored RAID for your main backup. This could consist of two identical hard drives mounted in your Mac Pro's slots (this is what I do.) Or you could purchase a two-drive external case and use Firewire. (I also do this.) Drive size should be determined by how large a drive(s) you are backing up and if you plan to use Time Machine. TM's backup device must be at least twice the size of the drive(s) it backs up.
What I'm stuck on is what software to use for doing the cloning and more importantly, the backups.

If you are running Lion then do not use SuperDuper. It has not yet been updated for reliable use with Lion and cannot handle Lion's Recovery HD. Carbon Copy Cloner's recent beta release would be a good choice as would Synk Pro from Decimus, or Tri-Backup.  All of these will clone a drive as well as perform scheduled backups/updates of a clone. But only CCC properly deals with Lion's Recovery HD at this time. All of these make essentially file by file copies from the source to the destination. One can easily restore a file or a few items without needing to use the backup utility since everything on the backup is accessible through the Finder.
TM is not able to create a bootable clone. It is an archival backup utility intended for home users needing basic, automatic, and simple to use backup software. Restoring software from a TM backup can only be done through the TM application.

  • Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

Are you actually having a problem with the new Lacie drive, or are you just asking is the Lacie drive somehow different from your old G-Drive?
From a connection standpoint, most Lacie desktop drives have both USB and FireWire connections, just like the G-Drives do.  You would connect and use it the same as a G-Drive.
Regarding capturing to the external HD, if you are using a camcorder that has FireWire (iLink) connection, it is not advisable to have an external FireWire HD connected to your Mac at the same time as your camcorder; there are often communication conflicts between the camcorder and the hard drive if they are connected at the same time.  The conflicts usually appear as either dropped frames or a complete freeze.   This is more common with Canon miniDV camcorders but I have also seen this behavior with Sony miniDV camcorders.  (The problem is the camcorder's FW implementation, not the hard drive.)  The workaround is to capture to your Mac's internal HD and later copy the captured video to your external HD.

  • Switched over to Mac and having MAJOR problems with Powerbook G4

    Hello,
I'n the interest of not having to post many threads and to save bandwidth I will post my problems on one single thread so that you can address each issue.
    1) The adapter cord that plugs in to my Powerbook usually has a bright "yellow" light on the endge of the cord when plugged in. Recently the color changed to bright "orange" should I be concerned and is this a sign of something bad to come?
    2) When I press the power button "sometimes" the screen goes grey. I press the button, hear the chime, screen goes grey with a world logo that keeps flashing at limbo preventing me from getting in to the computer system. Why is this happening and how do I correct it?
    3) Select the Apple Icon on the top and go to Mac OSx software, IE Explorer loads and then FREEZES evertything on the system. It's as though it's crashing from the onset.
    4) At any given time while I'm searching through files or surfing the net a ridiculous littl ball appears in the shape of a rainbow that essentially locks my ENTIRE SYSTEM. I cannot click on any Icon or do much of anything. Forced to sit and helplessly look at this stupid object with no directive as to what to do. I can't even shut down my system in safe mode because it won't let me access the Apple Icon on the top menu. At last resort I have to HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON for 10 seconds just to shut it down.
    5) How can you retrieve files deleted by accident or do a system restore like you can in Windows? No disks came with my computer so I'm hoping that there is a button to click that can reverse actions and bring back system to an earlier time. I'm sure that Apple must have thought about this as people are going to make many mistakes and will need immediate and non complex recourse in restoring files and the system in general. I changed Admin privilidges to myself and deleted the former Admin of my system, thinking that it would only delete the "name" but instead I suspect that the system deleted 5GB of files that the former Admin installed? Not sure. I have nothing in my trash can and the deleted files under former Admin are in the form of an "image" on my hard disk. I tried to open the deleted file by clicking on the Icon and it's telling me "DISK IMAGE FAILED TO MOUNT no mountable file system. This is very frustrating as I need to see what files have been deleted and restore those that I need. I have OFFICE MAC X suite that now I can't locate and yesterday I downloaded the Opera browser and turned on the Mac this morning only to find that it to is gone.
Now granted Windows is a headache in itself but I never imagined that I would be going through all this madness with a Mac. Everyone spoke so highly of them and I'm finding out different from first hand experience. Hopefully, you can help me resolve the above issues as I'm feeling very frustrated with this computer.

    Hi again,
You definitely need to purchase some replacement disks for your computer. Just from hard shutdowns via the powerbutton can do system file damage and you need to Repair Dick using the install disk.
From your reply I would suggest obtaining a good Mac OSX users book such a one of the David Pogue books etc. You can find any number of them online for your OS. The learning of the Mac OS can be somewhat confusing for a switcher from PC and Microsoft OS's. I was somewhat lucky in that when I first started using computers I learned on a Mac so I never had any relearning curve to deal with. I think you will find if you stick with your Mac and OSX that you will learn to love it compared to PC's.
I can assure you that Apple did not drop the ball when it came to the PowerBooks as evident by it being one of the most succesful of all Mac notebook computers.....there are many many happy users still of PowerBooks. There is a specific forum here in Discussions for Powerbook computers that may help you with certain issues.
re: "I went ahead and downloaded my favorite browser Opera for the second time, since it disappeared yesterday after I restarted my machine. Hopefully, I will find it on the Doc the next time I start my system."
Once you download an app to your Mac you will need to place it in your HD/Applications folder. From there you can simply drag it's alias to the Dock or click open the app and then when the icon appears in the Dock click on its icon in the Dock once and hold and from its pop up contextual menu select "Keep In Dock". Applications do not automatically stay in the Dock.
I am not sure I follow your description of the problem of the lost 5GB of files that were on some sort of Disk Image and how you are trying to retrieve them for me to be able to help. If you have deleted the files they are gone on your computer and you will need to use a third party software to recover them (DataRescue is one such utility but these are expensive softwares and can have varying results with file recovery). If you know the name of any of the missing files you can do a search using the finders search field (double click on your HD icon and then use its search field upper right) to make sure that the files are indeed not on your HD anymore.
I also wanted to suggest when using the command +option + escape key combination to force quit a process sometimes may take a couple or a few tries to get it to work sometimes (at least that has been my experience). Did you read through Dr. Smoke's FAQ concerning the SBBOD?
In the end you will need to learn common system maintenance for your OS to function properly such as Repairing Permissions via Disk Utility and running the cron maintenance (daily, weekly and monthly) tasks which can be done manually or by downloading a third party freeware utility such as MacJanitor to help do this easily. One of the biggest reasons to have your install disks is this is how you will need to repair the disk for system corruption among other problems. This can only be done with OS 10.3.9 by using the install disk and booting to its DiskUtility.
I hope these tips help a little more and do post back with further questions,

  • IAS authentication with 200 series switches based on MAC addresses

    Hi,
I try to implement a solution based on a 2003-Server with IAS and a switch (from the 200 series) just to authenticate machines with their MAC addresses.
I think the config on the switch is ok but I'm facing questions about parameters to put in IAS...
Can someone help me or give me a link to a good document that explains the 'how-to'?
    Many thanks

I have just done some more testing.
I added the authentication mac-move permit command to the switch and it now almost works as expected.
    The scenarios now are:
Machine without dot1x supplicant plugged into phone, when unplugged the switch immediately deletes the mac address from the port.
Machine with dot1x supplied plugged into phone, exactly the same.
Machine without dot1x plugged directly into port exactly the same
Machine with dot1x plugged directly into port exactly the same.
The problem is if someone has a machine running a dot1x supplicant and hosting a VM.
In that case as long as you move to a different port on the same switch it works fine (as the workstation reconnects the mac-move process works).
If you move this machine from one switch to another with the IP phone installed. the de-auth message removes the VM or the host from the original switch mac table and leaves one of the old addresses behind.
I suppose a solution would be to ban all VMs but that won't go down well.
I don't want to change the authentication method as we will have machines without a supplicant that need to connect to resources (i.e. using mab)
Thanks for your help (and a faster reply than my support company who still haven't rung me back).

  • How do i sync iphone with multiple macs? and few questions

    Hi
I would appreciate if anyone would help me.
    1. I would like to know how to sync my iphone with different macs. I have a macbook 13 and a macbook 15 and would like to use BOTH to be able to transfer data without losing them. (address, apps, photos and music)
would like to use this feature if I were to be suddenly on a trip and a friend would like to share some of his files (audio, apps, photos..etc)
    2. is it possible to use internet tethering on multiple macs or example a "spontanious" mac? (ex. if I were suddenly to use internet through usb on a friends mac while we were on a trip but it were programmed on my mac at home)
    3. my internet tethering is only working on one mac which I usually use to sync everything... i tried just using tethering through usb on the other mac wihtout any sync but somehow it didnt work... usually i just plug and play and start using firefox... by automatic detection...
    4. is there also a way to copy files from iphone onto a mac which would not be one of my libraries?
    5. why cant i use iphone like the ipod as a disk use?
I am aware that these things are somewhat possible because i have read quiet a few artivles but they are sadly enough not so current... any help appreciated.

#1: As has been said, you can't get around it. An iPhone cannot be synched to more than one computer for any media content (it can be for contacts and calendar information, I believe).
#4: You can transfer items purchased from the iTunes Store to another computer but only if you disallow synchronization and authorize that computer to your iTunes Store account. There are third-party utilities that can transfer non-iTunes Store content.
#5: there is no disk mode in an iPhone and no way to enable one, at least not in the sense of disk mode in earlier iPods. There are third-party apps that allow some file transfer to and from an iPhone.
I can't help with tethering questions.

  • Some dumb questions from a MAC Virgin

Firstly let me thank you for help you are going to give me.
I have thought for many years about switching to a MAC from my PC.
At the moment I a wireless network comprising my desktop (which is the one I would like to replace with a MAC system) and downstairs a Sony Vaio laptop. I use a Netgear Router and for the upstairs computer a usb wireless dongle to connect to my network.
    First question.
    1. If I buy a mac desktop and set it up upstairs how do I connect it to my wireless network? Is it possible? Is it easy? Will it just find it as my PC does and allow me to gain access via my WEP key?
    Second Question.
I maintain daily two websites. I know the FTP access won't be an issue as far as I can see but what software is available for web design and maintenance - doesn't need to be fancy I can code HTML by hand.
    Third Question.
My printer is connected to my desktop upstairs assuming I can access and maintain a wireless connection will my printer work with the laptop?

    1. Yes, yes and yes.
    2. Lots can be found at versiontracker.com and macupdate.com
    3. If there are Mac drivers for your printer, yes it will work. To setup, see this page:

  • Some basic questions from a mac newbie

    hi,
i have been using linux and windows all this while, and recently began using an apple too. have some simple questions here that i hope to get some answers for.
    1. is there something similar to /etc/hosts in linux where i can add the IP address of a server? this is for me to use the 'ssh' command in the terminal
    2. when i open up an application, say safari or chrome, i want the window to fill the entire screen automatically, instead of having to drag the bottom right of the window to fill the screen. how to configure that?
    3. when i close an application by clicking on the 'x' at the top left, why is it that it still appears in the list when i press command+tab? to remove the application from the list, i have to right click on its icon on the dock, then click 'quit'. this is rather troublesome.
    appreciate any help!

    1. is there something similar to /etc/hosts in linux where i can add the IP address of a server? this is for me to use the 'ssh' command in the terminal
The /etc/hosts file is there, but the /etc/ folder is hidden. You can use the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/) to access it via Unix, or could enter "open /etc" in the Terminal to open that folder in the Finder.
However, I'm not sure how this relates to ssh... I have not needed to modify that file, yet I can ssh all I need to. Are you trying to connect to your new Mac via ssh, or connect to other machines from the Mac via ssh?
    2. when i open up an application, say safari or chrome, i want the window to fill the entire screen automatically, instead of having to drag the bottom right of the window to fill the screen. how to configure that?
Just drag the window out to full-screen and the browser should remember and open new windows at that size in the future. There are also some utilities (one called "Right Zoom" IIRC?) that will make the zoom button (green + button) behave more like the Windows zoom button.
    3. when i close an application by clicking on the 'x' at the top left, why is it that it still appears in the list when i press command+tab?
Applications shouldn't quit just because you close their last window, unless the application's entire user interface is contained within that window. That is the case with ALL Windows apps, since there's no global menu bar, but only in some Mac apps. This is something that always ticked me off big-time with Windows... there have been times when I carelessly closed a window I didn't need anymore, but wanted to keep using the app, and then had to wait for it to load again. That won't happen on the Mac.
If this bothers you, just use the key combination command-Q to quit apps.

I own a Mac. I want to install some new programms but itunes wants to upgrade itself and wants me to agree with some conditions. I WILL not agree to those conditions.
How can I install software now? The stupid screen keeps popping up that itunes wants to be updated. Going round in a circle here.

Well, if you want to use iTunes and whatever  security or changes have been made with the iTunes Agreement have changed since last time, and to work with the iTunes Store....
    Clone your system.
You can also turn off updates.
Are you on Lion? And already have iTunes 11? You can manaully download and go to the support page and see what changes were made and other requirements.
There is a forum for issues with itunes (but not with the software license and agreement)
iTunes 11.1.3This version of iTunes resolves an issue where the equalizer may not work as expected and improves performance when switching views in large iTunes libraries. This update also includes additional minor bug fixes. Nov 5, 2013

  • Newbie with Macs with alot of questions

Ok.. I am a PC guy and never worked with a MAC before.
    I have a Ibook POWER PC G3
    Memory 256 MB SDRAM
    MAC OSX Version 10.4.11
I believe it has 12GB of space left on the main hdd.. I am not that sure again, because I am not used to MACS
First question is the time will never stay set. Whenever I turn it on, it will tell me that the time is not set.
Secondly, I believe the battery is not good at all.. Whenever i unplug the power cable, it cuts off.
    Are the two issues related??
I am thinking of upgrading the ram and the HDD in this MAC. Is it feasible or it it a lost cause?
I also want to upgrade the OS on it to the latest one. Is it possible or should I leave the OS as is?
Does it have an internal wireless card?? I am thinking it does not, but I am not that sure. How do I find out??
Does it uses the same type of ram sticks that is found in a windows laptop??
Thanks for all of your assistance once again...

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
First question is the time will never stay set. Whenever I turn it on, it will tell me that the time is not set.
Secondly, I believe the battery is not good at all.. Whenever i unplug the power cable, it cuts off.
    Are the two issues related??
Yes. There is no secondary battery in the iBook to hold the settings, so if the main battery is no good, the setting will not hold for more than a few seconds after it is shut down. (A capacitor holds the settings long enough to swap out batteries if you have more than one battery to use with it.)
I am thinking of upgrading the ram and the HDD in this MAC. Is it feasible or it it a lost cause?
The RAM is absolutely upgradeable. You can upgrade the RAM with a 512 MB module which will replace the 128 MB module which currently occupies the one user-accessible RAM slot. It takes a 144-pin 3.3 V, PC100 or PC133 compliant, 1.25 inch SDRAM SO-DIMM available here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iBooks-PowerBooks/G3-iBook/
Instructions for replacing the memory card can be found in this Apple Knowledge Base article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=111918
A hard drive upgrade is a complicated procedure, and not recommended unless you really know your way around such things. You almost have to completely disassemble the iBook to do it.
Assuming it is the 12-inch model, here is the link to instructions:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/iBook-G3-12-Inch-Hard-Drive/130/1
I also want to upgrade the OS on it to the latest one. Is it possible or should I leave the OS as is?
Mac OS X 10.4.11 is the best that an iBook G3 can do.
Does it have an internal wireless card?? I am thinking it does not, but I am not that sure. How do I find out??
Maybe or maybe not? Click on the Apple logo at the top left of the display and select "About This Mac." Then click on "More Info." This brings up the System Profiler and it will tell you whether or not an original AirPort Card is installed. While you're there, find out which exact iBook it is and tell us so we are better able to assist you. (Processor MHz rating and type of optical drive will do it.)
Does it uses the same type of ram sticks that is found in a windows laptop??
It uses the same type of RAM found in some Windows laptops. (See specific info above.)
In order to find out the size of the hard drive and how much space remains available on it, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. You can check the S.M.A.R.T. Status of the drive here, and also its specs (total capacity and available space).
Good luck with it, but keep in mind that it is a very old computer, so don't expect a whole lot from it. Apple discontinued G3 iBooks seven years ago.

  • Mac with some random slowness

    Hi,
I have a Macbook early 2011. It was running Mavericks and was really slow, so I've bought a 500 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM, installed on it, installed Yosemite on the new drive and copied *only* my personal files to it (only installed a few apps and no kernel extensions). Now surprise, surprise, it's still terrible!
Every now and then processor usage goes up to the sky with some repeated messages on console (not always the same, sometimes it's Mail, sometimes is something else).
I'm the only user, only one account. I've tried Safari, Firefox and Opera to see if it was the browser, but nothing seems to help. My Mac always finds a reason to get slow.
    Can somebody please help?
    Thanks in advance.

As request, I've got some messages from the console.
First, there was a crash log and some spin log that I've put on pastebin to make this post shorter. Here they are:
