Potential Fix to the WiFi connection dropping on MacBook Pro

I, along with a number of other people who have posted here, was experiencing WiFi connection drops after a few minutes on my brand new MacBook Pro, which is running OS X 10.7.5. Rather than going the route of plugging in a static IP address, I decided to look at other options within the Network Preferences. Under "Advanced," I went to the TCP/IP tab and set "Configure IPv6" to "Link-local only." By default it is set to "Automatically." The WiFi connection has not dropped since that change was made. It may not fix all the issues being experienced, but it might help at least some people having the disconnect issue.

Nice post, thanks!

Why the movie play slowly when I use the wifi connection for TC & Macbook Pro?

If you hold down an "option" key while you pull down the Wi-Fi menu-bar item on that MacBook Pro, what value do you see for "RSSI"?  If it's in the range of -60s to -90s, then your Wi-Fi connection may be too weak.

Is there a fix for the wifi connectivity issue after ios6 update?
Cannot connect to any wifi since update to 6.0.1
How do I get update to 6.0.2?
    Will that even help?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • How can I fix an intermittent wifi connection with my MacBook laptop

I have experienced intermittent problems with the wifi connection on my MacBook (2006, 10.6.5 OSX) computer and noticed that other users have commented about this same issue.  Not sure if the problem revolves around the updates from Apple or my wifi card but I only seem to loose my wifi connection with the MacBook.  I have other Apple products, Iphones, Ipads and IMac and they all retain the wifi connection.  Additionally, when I connect the internet cable directly to the MacBook, there is no loss of signal and I have no problem connecting to the Internet.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

After several unsuccessful attempts to resolve my intermittent wifi connection with a 2006 MacBook (I had service techs from Apple store, PeachMac and Computer Advantage check the intermittent wifi problem in store and they could not recreate this issue), I broke down and bought a new wifi card and installed it myself.  The intermittent problem was resolved and my wifi connection works fine everywhere in my home.  Ifixit's website has a great video that explains in detail how to remove and install a new wifi card and you will need the right tools and patience.  Thanks to everyone that posted comments about this issue because the comments proved helpful in solving my problem.

  • Is possible for me to use the wireless connection from my Macbook Pro

Hi All, I just got my iPad 16GB WIFI and I would like to know if it is possible for me to use the wireless connection from my Macbook Pro. Basically I will be travelling quite a bit and my Macbook Pro has a Wireless 3G dongle. Is it possble to use this via the 'internet share' option so that the iPad can connect to the 3G wireless via the Macbook Pro?

Yes. Just use internet sharing on your MacBook Pro.

  • Network connection drops on MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro 15 “ Unibody OSX 10.5.8 (have not yet upgraded to Snow Leopard) 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB Ram purchased in December 2008. This was my first Mac purchase having used only Windows PCs prior to that. My daughter has a nearly identical Macbook Pro purchased for her in July of 2008 which is also running OSX 10.5.8. Everything on my Mac has worked perfectly---and beautifully-- until about one month ago when I started having problems connecting to our home network (Netgear Router, Commcast provided modem). It is important to know that my daughter’s MacBook Pro and my wife’s Dell laptop (Vista) do not and have never experienced the network connection problem I have been experiencing---only my Macbook Pro--- so I assume the fault lies somewhere other than with the router or modem. I lose the internet connection once or twice each day--sometimes when I am in the middle of something and sometimes when I turn my MacBook on from being shut down or from sleep--happens in all three states. After discussing this issue on the phone with several people at Apple tech support (all of whom were very pleasant and patient) it was determined that the internet connection issue could be solved temporarily by dragging the System Configuration Folder from the HD Preference Library to the desktop, then restarting, then clicking on our home network name. Whenever I follow this procedure I am able to connect to the Internet again and everything is fine until another 12 to 24 hours goes by and then I lose the connection again, repeat the fix and so on and so on. Since this problem does not occur more frequently than once or twice a day I have not bothered to take my MacBook to an Apple Store to see if the problem is caused by a hardware issue. I do not have a back up computer for my personal use at home and would rather not take my MacBook in unless until I have exhausted any other options that might exist. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the discussions forum Rpma1900.
I can't explain your problem, but since no one has posted any ideas might I suggest the following?
Try turning OFF IPv6 in Network Preferences. IPv6 is a great idea in theory but I've never encountered a network situation in which it's resulted in any performance improvement.
Try giving your MacBook Pro a fixed IP address. Make it numerically higher than any that might be provided by your Netgear router so it won't conflict with them.
Finally, I once experienced this identical problem using a Linksys router, but with a strange twist: my Vista computer would lose connection in much the same manner as your MacBook Pro, while all my Macs would remain happily connected. After exhausting every other imaginable solution, including the above suggestions, I finally removed the Linksys router and installed an AirPort Express. Problem solved.

  • Wireless Connection Dropping on MacBook Pro

    Hello,
I have been running into an issue with my Macbook Pro dropping wireless connection to Alcatel Wireless access points. It happens when I disconnect AC power and run off of the battery. It usually drops the signal a few minutes after that. I have run all the updates and it still seems to be happening. We can tell when it drops because we are kicked off of a Filemaker remote database. Has anyone else run into this issue?
    Thanks!

Please beware that Pacifist-based "fixes" like that advocated in the thread in question above have two notable downsides:
    1) You will remove certain functional and security fixes from your system.
    2) You may break future software updates as your system will be listed as having some software installed that no longer is installed.
I understand the frustration, but if you choose to "fix" your problem in this way, beware it is not without danger and may cause you future issues.

  • Isolated wifi connectivity issues for MacBook Pro

When I connect my MacBook Pro to the wifi at my university only google.com and apple.com load. No other websites will load (including gmail.com). It is an isolated issue to my machine with this one particular network, as my iPhone connect to the same network with no difficulties as do other MacBook Pros and PCs around me. My MacBook Pro shows excellent signal strength when connected to that network.
When I am using my home wifi or wifi and work, I have absolutely no issues with connectivity or loading any pages.
Can give me an idea as to what might be going wrong?

There's a reason why the Finder in the dock is doing this. Click on the icon and tell us what the prompt says.

I have tried contacting apple about the problem-but to no avail.
I'm sorry, but I find this hard to believe if you called them.
    A few suggestions:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.

    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.
Also, run the Airport Utility app which is located inside the Utilities folder.

If using Linsys router contact LinkSys Customer Support and/or post in their forums.
If using Apple's Airport, please re-post over in one of the AirPort Forums.

  • My Magic Mouse is interfering with the wifi of my Retina Macbook pro

Brand new Retina Display MacBook Pro with a brand new Magic Mouse and I can't use the mouse when I am browsing the web because it interferes with the wifi - for some unknown reason. Anyone help?

That can happen when your Wifi is on the 2.4Ghz band as bluetooth uses this also.
Change the Wifi channel to a lower channel like 1-3.  That should reduce/eliminate the interference.

Is it ok to leave the charge connect most of the time? or can I blow something out if it is connected? just thought of asking cuz i have been leaving it on.

I do it all the time with no ill effects.  At least once per month I will use the MBP under battery power to about the 40% discharge level to keep the battery happy.  Here are Apple articles on MBP battery usage which you may find helpful:

  • How do I connect my airport Express to the internet connection of my Macbook Pro without an ethernet cable?

I would like to use my Airport Express (802.11n) to provide audio in another room for a pair of powered speakers, however the iTunes remote software for Android requires (for some dumb reason) an internet connection so I can't control iTunes
So my computer is connected to a cabelmodem via ethernet and the Express has established a network connection with the computer
How do i give the Airport internet access without an ethernet cable?

To share your Internet connection from your laptop, select 'Sharing' in 'System Preferences' and enable 'Internet Sharing'.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13855
You will need to set a WEP key. You may need to root the system do some things at the command line. I recommend against that.
Laptops don't work well as routers but it is possible.
Hook up the AirPort express to the laptop using an Ethernet cable and configure with the AirPort utility as if you are setting up a print server or base station. The Android should see the AirPort Express after that.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4587
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2312443
This might work better if you used the AirPort Express as a base station instead of trying to use the laptop as a base station. Then your Android would have Internet access.
