Potential for fraudulent manipulation of medical images using CS5?

This is an unusual issue that I would welcome comment upon. A recent scientific paper in a peer-reviewed medical journal on Diagnostic Imaging has drawn attention to the fact that medical images produced by Computed Tomographic (CT) scanners can easily be manipulated using Photoshop to alter the diagnostic information produced - so that, for instance, the liver can be 'cured' of evidence of cancer, and, that normal livers can be changed so that they show 'evidence' of cancer. As a Consultant Radiologist and as a photographer who uses CS5, there's no doubt that such manipulations are relatively easy to use, and are, in the right hands, highly convincing.
This clearly has the potential for abuse, both in the presentation of fraudulent research data, and even in the alteration of medical-legal evidence.
I wonder if anyone has any thoughts as to how this potential for serious abuse could be managed? Is it possible, for instance, to 'tag' images so that there is an indelible 'paper-trail' of manipulation, so that any image carries am audit trail of what has happened to it, or has this potentially nasty horse already bolted?

Abuse and fraud in research papers can happen anywhere in the line of contribution, not just in manipulating images. There are strict guidelines in all the respected journals as to what photo-manipulations are ok (global color, contrast and brightness adjustments are fine... to a point). Clone Stamp Tool and Healing Brush are not.  Of course some people use the editing tools ethically (remove a piece of dust or a scratch on a slide, or adjust the vignetting of a microscope image). Researchers I work with take their presensation of data seriously.  The consequences are severe if any lab or researcher is caught falsifying data.
But like Jeff said, Photoshop did not make it possible to “fake” data, it just made it easier. People have been manipulating images from the the get-go. For example this iconic picture of Linclon is Lincoln's head  "photoshopped"  onto John Calhoun's body, circa 1860. Or the first well known multi-image photo-composite by Oscar Rejlander in 1857! (Two Ways of Life) something like 32 individual images make up that early composite.
I saw a demo a while back at a PhotoshopWorld conference (2006 in Las Vegas?) of software that could examine an image to detect areas of "cloning" . Not sure what came of that, but I'm sure there is some diagnostic software that could be used on questionable images. Still, at some point, trust in professionals (scientists, researchers, photographers) comes into play.
EDIT:
I just saw that Chris Cox had a link to Rejlander!
Here is another Rejlander from 1858: The Head of St. John the Baptist (on a platter)

  • Canvas Resize to Square for a large number of images using script. E.g. image is currently 1020 x 600, I would like to change this to 1020 x 600. PLEASE HELP

    Hi All,
I have a large number of images that I need to resize the canvas sizes to a square, the images are currently in different sizes. For example, if an image is 1020 x 600 I would like to change the canvas to 1020 x 1020 so that the image becomes a square. I am using CS3 and all the images are jpeg's. I have done research on scripts but the ones I have tried have not worked. Please help.
    Thanks.

Since you do not want to crop your images to a square 1:1 aspect ratio changing the canvas to be square will not make your images square they will retain their Aspect Ratio and  image size will be changer to fit within your 1020 px square. There will be a border or borders on a side or two borders on opposite sides.   You do not need a script because Photoshop ships with a Plug-in script to be used in Actions.   What is good about Plugins is the support Actions.  When you record the action the plug-in during action recording records the setting you use in its dialog into  the actions step.  When the Action is played the Plug-in use the recorded setting an bypasses displaying its dialog. So the Action can be Batch.  The Action you would record would have two  Steps.   Step 1  menu File>Automate>Fit Image... in the Fit Image dialog enter 1020 in the width and height  fields.  Step 2 Canvas size enter 1020 pixels in width and height  not relative leave the anchor point centered it you want even borders on two sides set color to white in the canvas size dialog. You can batch the action.
The above script will also work. Its squares the document then re-sizes to 1020x1020  the action re-sizes the image to fit with in an area 1020 x 1020 then add any missing canvas. The script like the action only process one image so it would also need to be batched. Record the script into and action and batch the action. As the author wrote. The script re size canvas did not specify an anchor point so the default center anchor point is uses  like the action canvas will be added to two sides.

  • What is the optimum core configuration for a new Mac Pro to process and manipulate very large (80 megapixel) images using PhotoShop and Camera Raw?

    Hello:
I will be using creative techniques to process and manipulate a large number (hundreds) of very large (80 megapixel) images captured using a medium format digital back (Phase One IQ180).
Final output will be digital fine art imagery printed using an Epson 11880 at large sizes (up to 60 inches x ?), retaining the highest possible quality and resolution. I will be using Adobe CC PhotoShop and Camera RAW as well as Capture One software. PhotoShop filters will be used extensively.
The Mac Pro needs to be optimized for the above purpose and be useful for at least five years. I plan to max out all the other options (RAM, graphics cards, storage). Performance is more important than cost.
The few discussions I have found that mention optimum core configurations seem to lean toward 6 or 8 (but likely are not taking into consideration my need for manipulating a large number of very large files), so I am looking to this foum for opinions.
    Thank you,
    Kent

  • EFilm Lite for Mac OS X or a freeware third party viewer to view DICOM medical images?

    Hello.
Does anyone know if there is an eFilm Lite software for Mac OS X (10.5.8 and 10.8.4)? One of the medical doctors gave my client a burned CD with scanned X-rays, but we were unable to read the encrypted(?) 522 KB DCIM X-Ray image(?) files [Terminal showed "file IM000000" showed "IM000000: DICOM medical imaging data" and none of Windows, Mac, and Linux can view them] and run Windows software (want to avoid installing Windows dual boot and running a virtual machine to make things more complex for him).
I was unable to find any Mac downloads on http://www.merge.com/ web site (e-mailed [email protected] and currently waiting for a reply/response [probably not until next regular short USA work week], but probably won't get a good answer).
    Thank you in advance.

Just go back in photoshop and use the Slice Select tool, then just click and select the slice and hit delete - if you're not sure which one is the active slice just right click and find the one that has the Delete Slice option.
It's possible you either added the slices by accident or if you received it from someone they just had the slices hidden. For the future, you can go to View > Show > Slices to display (or hide) slices.

  • How do I change Transfer Syntax for DICOM images using sample Java sources?

    Hi,
I tested using Note:876534.1 Java API samples. It works fine when I put the "Implicit VR Little Endian" DICOM file.

    It would go like this
    1. TIFF + XML metadata => DICOM image file
you can use the method ord_dicom.createDicomImage(src blob, metadata xmltype, dest blob) to create the DICOM image in a blob.
2, then use the ORDDicom constructor ORDDIcom(data blob) to create an ORDDicom object
    3. then use the ORDDicom processCopy method to change the image properties.
Alternatively you can change image properties on the input TIFF image (using ORDImage methods) then create the DICOM image. If you are happy with the image properties then you can skip step 3.

  • User Interface for bulk loading images using interMedia

I would like to create an interface where users could bulk load images to a database. Has anyone created a web (or other) interface that would perhaps call a PL/SQL procedure or SQLloader?
Is there a way for users to upload images from there own computers in bulk? Would they need to utilize SQLPLUS?
While I have seen the examples and plan to create a web interface for uploading images one at a time, I have been requested to find a way for the users to upload images in bulk themselves (instead of them requesting us technical people to do it).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi,
There's a sample on OTN that discusses loading multimedia data in bulk into the interMedia types using both SQL*Plus (with PL/SQL) and SQL*Loader. Check out the following URL: http://otn.oracle.com/sample_code/products/intermedia/htdocs/avi_bulk_loading.html
One major difference to consider between SQL*Loader and SQL*Plus (with PL/SQL) is that SQL*Loader can load data from files on the machine running SQL*Loader, which may be a different machine than the database, although it still needs an Oracle installation. Whereas SQL*Plus with PL/SQL can load data only from directories that are accessible to the database server and that have been defined in the server using the CREATE DIRECTORY command, which requires privs. Also note there are restrictions and issues specific to both NT and Unix when it comes to access network directories from the server.
If SQL*Loader looks like a possibility, you might want to think about a simple Java program, Perl script, or some such, to create the SQL*Loader scripts. On the other hand, if you get into Java, then you could use Java to do the upload and, at the same time, provide some level of application-specific user interaction and/or error reporting, etc. Its easy to get a list of file names in a directory using the File.list or File.listFiles methods in Java. On the other hand, if we talking LOTs of files, then SQL*Loader may turn out to be more efficient.
In order to better understand the variety of ways in which our customers are using interMedia, we'd be very interested in knowing a little more about your application, the interMedia functionality that you are using, and how you are developing and deploying your application. If you are able to help us, please send a short email message with some information about your application, together with any comments you may have, to the Oracle interMedia Product Manager, Joe Mauro, at [email protected]. Thank you!

If the images belong to you or you are using images that you were given permission to use such as public domain images. The other requirement (as far as I know) is photoshop is not the student/teacher version.
There is an eula on the main web page of Adobe that you can read. Just search for it. Be specific with the search for example eula for lightroom or eula for Photoshop CC 2014.

I am using a PC with windows 7. I have a number of figures that update daily as data is automatically download that I would like to build a page to display. I am hoping that by uploading an image using the URL it will update when the image updates at that URL. I am not sure if this is possible.

I need this fixed ASAP, as medical images need to be of the highest quality, and this service reduces that quality. Can anyone speak to me about what the status is for a fix for this?

    Hi Paul,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
What’s the client RDP version you are using? I will suggest you to update the RDP to RDP 7.0 and IE version to IE9-10 and then check the result. Use the Manage Add-ons dialog in Internet Explorer to enable the Terminal Services ActiveX Control. Apart from these,
suggest you to perform below steps.
Firstly install, MS12-037: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer: June 12, 2012
You many need to restart the server to take effect. Also Please check that you have “Mshtml.dll & Wmshtml.dll” file.
    Hope it helps!

  • Display 16 bit channel images using AGAL3

I am trying to display dicom images (medical images) which usually have 16 bit  R, 16 bit G and 16 B image channel (for gray scale R=G=B)
I have read that Context3DTextureFormat.RGBA_HALF_FLOAT can be used to represent the 16 bits per channel but I have not come across any examples or tutorials.
I am new to agal any pointers will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I've had this problem with images saved as 8-bit scans.
Are you using any compression in the TIFs? I scanned using Nikon Scan 4, cleaned up a bit in Photoshop 7, reduced the bit depth to 8-bit, and saved at TIFs with embedded colour profile using ZIP compression, Macintosh byte order.
This used to work with Aperture 1.5.6, but with Aperture 2.0 I see a kind of offset pattern, so a vertical line looks like this:
If export the master TIF, open it in Photoshop (where it looks normal) and save it with no compression Aperture displays it properly.
(I'm still using Tiger, so I don't think this is an OS issue.)
