Potential KDE to e17 problems

Hello
I want to try e17 quite badly. I tried using it in the past with Ubuntu but it never worked well. I am hoping it works a bit better with Arch. My point of the post is however if I install just the e17 package, will that be enough to go ahead and give it a try? Or is there more that needs to be done?
Thanks for the help with a stupid question.
Ghosty

I just installed E17 accounding to the wiki, and it works great for me.  try it, you'll see.
To configure it, look at this :

hope this help.

  • Graphical Errors in KDE since e17 install

    Hi,
I recently installed e17 from the community repository, and now KDE is having some graphical problems. Buttons are missing or missing text, the bouncing busy icon for launching applications is just a light blue square, the arrow on the panel's hide button is a square as well, and icons are missing from a number of places.
I've tried uninstalling e17, But it had no effect. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There's no question that changing things in E17 can change things in KDE. I was playing around with using E17 as KDE's window manager, and just for fun I changed the icon properties for Firefox in E17's launcher to point to Konqueror, and it made the updates in KDE also. Apparently E17 is directly modifying the desktop file and not storing settings in some sort of configuration file.
By the way, at the time I made the changes, I was not logged into KDE at all, only E17. When I wrote the last paragraph, I was in E17 putting the settings back. Now I'm in KDE, and the settings took here also.

  • KDE 4.10. problems

    Hello,
Yesterday I upgrade KDE from 4.9.5 to 4.10. All went perfect but now, some apps like Kmess and Gajim doesn' t use the KDE notifications and use their own notifications ( a green window in the case of gajim and in kmess a pop up on the middle of the top panel, they look terrible ) Anyone nows how to restore the kde notifications ?
P.D: Antoher problem I have is that the device notificator now always says that I have a mounted 0b floppy disk.

George wrote:Make sure you've got the notifications widget enabled in the system tray settings (right click on the sys tray).
Thank you, now I have notifications again. But the problem with the device manager cointinues. It shows a Floppy disk with 0 bytes size, I can' t access the data ( because this device doesn' t exist ) and I can' t umount, and is always on the try. I checked fstab file and there is nothing strange. It could be a bug of udisks ? This is the output of the command udisks --dump.
    udisks --dump

  • [Enlightenment E17] Problems with EFM after last Update [solved]

    Hello Folks!
I'm having some very ugly problems with my Enlightenment E17 Desktop after the last full system upgrade. This problem has already been reported to the German Arch Linux community, but no response yet, but I can't figure out that nobody else troubles the same probs.
This is the following what I get when running pacman -Ss e17-svn
    community/e-svn 42849-1 (e17-svn)
Enlightenment window manager DR17 (aka e17)
    community/e_dbus-svn 42682-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
    dbus abstraction layer for e17
    community/ecore-svn 42854-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
Ecore is an abstraction layer for e17
    community/edje-svn 42794-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
A graphical design and layout library based on Evas
    community/eet-svn 42851-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
A data storage and compression library
    community/efreet-svn 42759-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
    freedesktop.org specifications for e17
    community/eina-svn 42822-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
    E17 file chunk reading/writing library
    community/embryo-svn 42739-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
implementation of a C like scripting language for e17
    community/evas-svn 42855-1 (e17-libs-svn e17-svn)
    A hardware-accelerated canvas API for X-Windows
The problems that occur to me are following: I'm using EFM as file manager. It's not the best one, but it fits into the E17 concept - simple, lightweight, fast - and thats what I like. But, after the latest update, when I click a folder on my desktop, EFM now comes up in a stupid very tiny window. The window is so small, that I need to resize it every time to see any content. Before the update, everything worked fine, the EFM windows came up as they should.
Another problem I'm having with some applications, e.g. the Okular-Viewer, is that I'm not able to size down the window - it is always in full screen, and there's no chance to move it up (even not on the desktop preview widget) to move it down. Okular is always 100% filling my screen (over the height, only), and I'm not able to size it down. In the previous version, I didn't got this problems.
My question is now: is there any way to install the previous Enlightenment E17 packages? They where much better that this one... or will another update come out soon??
Thanks in advance for any help, any help is appreciated!

Have you tried starting with a clean config and the default theme, it helps sometimes after big code changes?
    If that doesn't help...
beachcoder wrote:My question is now: is there any way to install the previous Enlightenment E17 packages? They where much better that this one... or will another update come out soon??
If you find some mirror which keeps outdated packages that should not be a problem. Be sure to downgrade all of e17 packages (also some packages were deprecated and thus removed from the server during the last upgrade so you'd need to have those as well. You may still have those on your system though)
About a quick update, depends if Ican replicate it and if there is an easy fix. These things happen now and then with pre-alpha software when they do make major code changes.  I try to test every update locally before putting it live but I of course can't test every single feature.

  • Important KDE network apps problem

I have a strange problem : All internet related programs are slow on KDE, they have all a 5-second latency before doing anything. When i use kmail or konqueror for example, i have to wait about 5 second before anything to react. The problem stops when I install a proxy on my computer, squid in that case. It partially resolves the problem, but it can't be used for knode, kmail or any non-web internet programs.
I don't know how to solve that, i hope you'll help me.
    Thank in advance,
    V.

    Fixed.
I just installed bind and set "nameserver 127.0.0.1" to resolv.conf.
It seems that it was a named problem. Hard to believe but it works now..

  • [solved] kde without arts - problem with aplay/knotify

    Hi,
I finally got convinced to switch of arts for kde. Amarok runs much better now but I face a problem with knotify/aplay.
With arts not active knotify won't play sounds anymore. knotify is the program responsible for kde's bells and whistles, like playing a sound when you open or close a window etc.
knotify specifies an option for an external player, which I think is the thing to use in case you don't use arts.
I configured that option to use aplay, the sound replay program provided by alsa. However, that has problems. Many kde sounds come with 8khz sample frequency. If I play one of these sounds with aplay their playback frequency is much to low and the sound is heavily distorted. It seems the downmixing does not work.
If I use aplay -Ddmix or -Dduplex I get following error:
Playing raw data 'KDE_Beep.ogg' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
aplay: set_params:857: Sample format non available
I think that may have something to do with my .asoundrc or maybe there is another program to use for sound playback I don't know about. Also, I could be that knotify IS supposed to play the sounds even without arts running and something else is wrong.
Here is my .asoundrc, any advice is welcome:

Ok, I came to a solution.
My .asoundrc was ok. It was aplay that I wasn't aware of it couldn't handle .ogg files, it tried to play it anyway and that's why I got garbled sound output *headdesk*
I installed alsaplayer, after running it once I edited .alsaplayer/config to use the "text" user interface by default. Setting alsaplayer as external player for knotify seems to work.
However, knotify won't let me play sounds in quick succession, so I lose a knotify sound every now and then.

  • KDE (KMod3) Logout Problem

I am using Kmod3 on an EeePC 901.  I have an irritating (but not serious) problem with the KDE logout menu.
If I select "End Current Session" all seems to work OK, then when I try to log in as another user (or root), the background image appears, the Autostart scripts run, but the desktop does not appear (Icons, toolbars, etc). I have to CTRL+ALT+DELETE to force a shutdown, then start again.  All other Log Off options work perfectly.
I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Funny ... I looked for a similar problem in the forum records and did not find any ...
I'll give your idea a try.
Just for the record, I do not think the problem is related to Intel drivers (as suggested in one of the threads) because one if the machines has an nvidia card... the second system does have an Intel video card though.
    Thanks again.

  • E17 problem

    Hi
I'm new to Arch (and to the Arch Linux forums of course) and I must say that I'm loving it so far ( spent 8 days with Arch so far).
This is the third Linux distribution that I'm familiar with (FC4, Slackware .. did not like Slack .. went back to FC4).
So far I was able to get almost every Desktop Environment, Window Manager, Display Manager and Login Manager to work on Arch. Except for E17 and Entrance.
I've installed the base packages and went on from there.
I installed Xorg  (few related packages as well), xdm and a nvidia driver for my Asus Geforce2 card (respectively) after a pacman and system upgrade.
    Next steps:
    nvidia-xconfig
    and
    pacman -Sy e17
    (utilizing fouiny's repo)
and changed the config files (~/.xinitrc , xinitrc, rc.conf , xorg.conf) accordingly. I did nothing however with the e17 packages. I don't know what to do with them after the initial installation with pacman. I had some problems before with Xorg7 but I was able to find a solution in the wiki pages.
I've tried to get E17 to boot up like this:
    startx
However, it throws me back to vc1 (it does display the nvidia logo though) and xorg doesn't give  any output whatsoever (nor does E btw) which could indicate that something went wrong. I've checked the log files in /var/log as well, nothing really worth mentioning (not even a warning > i.e. no WW nor EE).
I've also tried to boot in entranced by putting it in the daemons section (rc.conf) and rebooted with init 5 as the default boot prefix. It boots up xdm instead.
I didn't really like xdm so I installed SLiM. It worked perfectly with every other WM's, DM's etc. No go for E17.
When I try to get it to work just by typing it in the CLI:
    [rob@archbox]$ enlightenment
It's saying something about that it doesn't have a DISPLAY variable to work with.
After some googling I thought this would solve the problem:
    $DISPLAY= my.ip.here:0.0
    No luck.
    Did I miss something?
I really, really want E17 no matter what. I'm willing to learn something new. Please help me out.
btw. I'm Dutch so you've undoubtly seen some minor (major ?) grammar/spelling mistakes  8)  lol.
    Cheers,
    Rob.

X works pefectly. I'm currently using Gnome right now. SLiM, btw, generates an enormous log file full of warnings. Gnome, nevertheless, works perfectly. I hate it though when I know that my setup isn't pefect.
When I try to get E17 up it returns me to vc1 and the information I get is that it determined a Display prefix and that' s it. Very strange.
Thanks for trying to help me out.
    Cheers,
    Rob.

  • KDE/KDM initialisation problem [SOLVED]

On my laptop, all of a sudden, kdm refuses to start KDE anymore. It will just launch a single borderless white terminal and that's it. The strange thing is, if I add "startkde" to ~/.xinitrc and run "startx" then kde starts up fine. I've never encountered this before, and am at a loss as to why it is happening. Has anyone ever encountered this before?
Last edited by Valheru (2007-01-31 20:09:31)

The session type is set to KDE.
One thing I noticed, /var/log/kdm has a few errors in it that are strange :
Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm's internally generated messages
(i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the
daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog configuration to find out to which
file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to authpriv.*.

  • KDE 4.10 - Problems with Plastik window theme

There seems to be several problems with the Plastik window decoration theme in KDE 4.10:
    * When switching between windows the window decoration flickers several times and takes about a second to update the colours
    * The font baseline is too high
    * The button positions are messed up
It does not seem to affect any other themes.
It has worked perfectly in all previous 4.x releases.

There is a bug report about this:

  • KDE Window Focus Problem

In KDE, when I'm focused on a window in foreground and I click on the contents of a window in the background the focus of the window changes, but the window that was in the foreground does not go behind the window that I just clicked on.
    http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/2745 … cusli7.png
In that picture, I was focused on the Pidgin window and I clicked on this text box of Firefox and the Pidgin window in the foreground.
The only way to place that window in the background is to click the title bar on top of Firefox, then it behaves normally.  By the way, I'm running KDE3.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

It's been quite some time since I've used KDE, but isn't there some kind of "raise on focus" setting that would raise newly focused windows? I'm certain this setting exists for focus-follows-mouse but I don't remember if it applies to click-to-focus.

  • E17 - problem compiling [SOLVED]

    HI,
    I'm using the easy_17.sh script to compile e17 on a fresh install of Arch.  For almost every program I getthe following;
    EASY_E17 CMD: ./autogen.sh --prefix=/opt/e17
    Running aclocal...
    Running autoheader...
    Running libtoolize...
    Running automake...
    Running autoconf...
configure.in:65: error: possibly undefined macro: AC_DEFINE
If this token and others are legitimate, please use m4_pattern_allow.
          See the Autoconf documentation.
So far I haven't been able to come up with a fix. Does anyone have any ideas??
    TIA

  • KDE Phonon sound problem

    Hello!
I'm using KDE 4.1 with some video and audio applications like amarok. I have to sound devices:
    1. Onboard sound card
    2. USB Headset (Sennheiser)
Both sound devices are detected and configurable in alsamixer and Kmix. I demute both devices. The onboard soundcard works perfectly, I here the sound all the time, but the USB headset isn't functional. I only here the kde login sound through the headset, but amarok for example makes the sound output through the onboard soundcard.
In "System Settings" (KDE 4.1) in the category "sound" I changed the device preference. The USB headset is now at the top on all categories like "music". But it doesn't help. All sound output is played with the onboard sound.
My user "andreas" is in the groups audio and video:
    video:x:91:andreas
    audio::92:andreas
It looks like the output preference in kde 4.1 isn't functional.
Has anybody maybe a hint for me?
    Thanks for your answers!
    Best regards,
    Flasher

    Servus
I guess you're using amarok from extra repository and not amarok2? Then the answer is rather simple sadly - it doesn't make use of phonon because it's still a KDE3 app. It uses what had previously been configured as your primary sound output device. You can probably fix that with manually fiddling some files in .kde directory (don't ask me which ^^).
If you are on Amarok2 already, then no clue, sorry. On a sidenote: I'm not fully happy with phonon as I'm not even able to get sound out through two devices simultanously (SPDIF and regular speakers) as worked on KDE3. It's only working with kaffeine for me still (like amarok a KDE3 app still).

  • Kbuildsycoca mimetype errors: KDE or Arch problem? And how to fix?

    Hi,
I'm running out of hdd space because of kbuildsycoca mimetype/servicetype in .xsession-errors
I know I can delete those files but I want to monitor the other errors.
So, I've lost my patience and started entering them hand...
    Nevertheless,  a few questions remain:
    1. After 2 days reading materials on the net I still can't understand who is resposible for them: KDE or distro?
    2. Does anyone know an automated way to fix those mimetypes (preferably for all users)?
    3. Or at least how to fix by hand types like 'KPovModeler/Document'?
    4. Where to find info for the correct values?
    5. Is it true that some/all of those errors should be fixed "automagically" if correct 'application/octet-stream' is present (I entered it but with no values)?
    6. ...Or have I just messed up something with installations (I'm using KDE 3.5.6)?
    Thanks in advance.

1... partial answer, I guess,  is that Arch supplies something useful for the mimetypes https://www.archlinux.org/packages/files/509/... (by installing
    pacman -S shared-mime-info
    , which I had done)
2, 3 and the above supplied things like:
    usr/share/mime/application/x-kpovmodeler.xml
Then, if applying knowledge from this topic http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=32007, I should have had in my
    ~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list
    something more useful than
    [Default Applications]
    text/plain=mousepad.desktop
And, if comparing to Fedora Core 6, also quite rich this one:
    usr/share/applications/defaults.list
but the latter had been absent on my Arch... Should it be? But, after copying it, kbuildsycoca  is still very unhappy and produces long lists
    update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
    doesn't change sycoca's mood, nor
    update-desktop-database
No errors, but no positive result, either.
    pacman -R kde gnome xorg
etc. Deleting - backing .config , .kde etc. - same effect.
Any hints, folks? Nobody else have kbuildsycoca errors?
Btw,. I guess, every Knoppix has...
