Potential new MacBook owner

Hello All,
I'm an IPhone fan and I'm tired of problems with my Dell XPS desktop and laptop. I want to switch to just a MacBook. I'm pretty good with Windows type of computers, but sooo tired of the complexity of software and problems that seem to just arise. My real question is how easy is it going to be to move over all of my photos that I have (using Kodak Easyshare software) and all of my music from iTunes from my desktop. I really only use my old computers to just read on the internet, get email, and manage my photos and music, so I really just want to buy a basic MacBook. Should I just go for the base model or upgrade to a more expensive one. I really want to get Time Capsule, also. Another fear of mine is compatibility with the wireless and my Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii working easily over this wireless network. I know I'm probably being overly fearful, but I would just like some input from some people on here before I make a final decision.
Thanks a lot,
Terry

I'll try to help ya out, only area I'm foggy on is transferring music from comp to comp if it's itunes music...
1. You will most likely enjoy the simplicity of OSX and the great software it comes with in the iLife bundle. OSX is much more worry free, especially if your currently using a Vista computer. However, the difference between windows and OSX is not too much that it would be frustrating or discouraging.
2. Moving your photos will take some sort of extra harddrive of flashdrive; depending on how many gig's worth of photos you have. Photo filetypes won't be an issue, you'll just end up using iPhoto instead of the kodak easyshare. Also, you most likely wont need to install any software needed to have your camera sync up with the mac. Those 3rd party softwares just muddle up a good computer anyway.
3. As far as I know for the iTunes, dont you just authorize your new computer with the iPhone/iPod and then move your library onto it?
4. Just stick with the base macbook and upgrade the harddrive if you want maximum storage onboard. If you plan on buying and external harddrive to store your stuff, then the base specs should be fine.
5. The wireless won't conflict with those other wireless devices. They will all feed off of the same wireless source: i.e. your wireless router or wireless modem.
If any of this was unclear please let me know. Hope it helps.

I am a long time iTunes user but a new MacBook owner! I keep the majority of my music files on an external hard drive.   I'm trying to view all those files on my MacBook through iTunes.   With windows you would go to : File/Add To Library, and iTunes would add all your selected files to your music library BUT WOULD NOT COPY THEM TO YOUR HARD DRIVE.  In other words, if the external hard drive was connected, you could listen, drag/drop, and edit the files.   When I tried the same thing with my new MacBook... it actually started coping the files to my MacBook harddrive.  I don't want that, it's millions and millions of mp3's that I don't want to keep on my computer, only my external hard drive.   Can anyone help?    I'm sure it's something easy, I'm just so new to the Mac world.   Being an iPhone owner for many many years I'm picking up things fast, but this is getting the best of me!  Help !

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

  • New macbook owner need insight on downloading a word document?

I just got a new macbook for college.. never had one before and im use to hp with windows..now, is there a program like Microsoft Word i need to download?? to write word documents and stuff?

    Download?
If you mean how to read/edit/use WORD documents on your Mac....your University should be able to sell you MS  Office, or you can buy/download from Amazon.
You can also use NeoOffice (Google is your friend), or switch to Pages, the Apple solution.

  • New MacBook owner but would like to do a ram upgrade

hello all. I'm a new mac user and love it. I got my new MacBook on the leopard debut date. Anyways I just wanted to know where I would go about getting a better ram card for my new laptop rather then the 1 gb one I have now. Another question I have is seeing that I already have a 1gb card already installed can I go ahead and buy a 2 gb card and put it in the empty slot to run both. That way I'm running 3 gb or would that not work. Also can someone give me a good place or a good website to guy it from thanx

If you add a 2 GB stick you will have 2.5 GB of RAM which is OK to run with. That way later on you can buy another 2 GB stick and bring it up to 4 GB. All MacBooks come from the factory with two sticks installed.

  • Potential New Macbook Pro (2.4 ghz) Buyer - Little Help?

Hello, I am a lifetime PC Person. My main computer will always be a PC. That's the way it is. However, my laptop has a chance of becoming a MacBook Pro, and I wanted a bit of information on some of the Features of the MBP 2.4ghz version.
Basically...I am a gamer. There are three games I want to run on the MBP.
    1) Warhammer Online (Boot Camp)
    2) Diablo 3
    3) Starcraft 2
Blizzard is all Apple-Lovey, so I think a mac version is entirely possible...but anyway. My question is...
I really want to play these games fine with no issues on good settings. Can the MBP handle these games with a proper framerate and performance? I know Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 are not out yet...but I think we can give a good guess of the specs when you take into account that blzzard is awesome at making things pretty without being a system hog.

According to a whole slew of posts on this topic, yes
Specifically, I believe I recall that Crysis plays fine under medium settings... there is even a YouTube video on this topic with the new MBP! Do a search on YouTube and enjoy (pretty easy to find)

  • Potential new mac owner

I am looking to get a new computer. Thinking about the new mac mini, mainly for the cost. My question is will this be enough computer for me? Primarily will be used for internet, photos, music and some video editing (standard). Storage wise I'm okay with, my main concern would be the speed. My old "pc" would take forever when viewing/editing pics. BTW, I'll be using it on a Vizio 21-inch display. Thanks in advance for your input.

    Hi there
The Mac MIni is an excellent choice for what you want to do - I use both Mac and PC and even though my PC on paper is the 'faster' computer (PC is 2.4Ghz Dual Core vs 1.83Ghz Dual Core Mac) I find my Mac Mini is the better performer. A lot of this is down to the superior operating system and the applications you get with the Mac. If my older Mac Mini can cope ok with music creation, video & photo editing I think you'll find the new breed of Mini's will be more than adequate for your needs.
Also I use a 22" monitor and find that the Mini can cope very well with the higher resolution displays.
    Hope this helps

  • New Macbook owner

After waiting for the Core 2 Duo to come to the Macbook I finally bought one yesterday and I have to say, this computer is amazing. It takes some time getting used to the Apple Os since I previously used Windows all my life. But now Im getting to the point (only the second day) where Im starting to need the old files on my old computer that ran Windows Xp Pro. So I have a couple questions (some just on how to use the Mac OS)
    1. I would like to ask anyone if there is any easy way to transfer all my files. I really just have one folder that I need to move over but that folder has atleast 4 gigabytes in it (music, etc). So is there a way to just transfer all my files easily without having to buy an external hard drive for example. The most important thing I need from my old computer is my music in my iTunes library, i heard theres a way to use my iPod Mini to transfer but I have no idea how to.
    2. For some reason in firefox all the videos and music player on myspace don show up. Is it because im missing a certain plug-in?
    3. Also related to that, in safari certain myspaces are so laggy to scroll around in that I refuse to use that browser anymore, is it a problem with something I need to do?
I really love this computer and you must imagine the fun I have defending Macs in my family since everyone else uses Windows. But Apple is amazing. I have only found minute issues with the computer (really just the ones listed above) but it probablly is just an error on my part. If theres anyone that can aid me in these problems I would be greatly appreciative. Thank you

Transferring the data using your iPod sounds like the way to go. Let's assume for the moment that all the music you own is already on your iPod. (If this isn't true it only changes the story a little bit.) Connect your iPod to the Mac and when you are told the iPod is synced to another computer and asks if you'd like to sync it to the Mac, select Cancel.
Go to your favorite Mac download site and search for iPod. You'll find several programs that let you copy the music on your iPod to the Mac. Download one and use it. If this is all your music great, if not, disconnect it, move it to your PC, and switch out the music on your iPod putting more of your collection on. Return to your Mac and copy. Keep this up until all the music has been transferred.
Connect the iPod to your PC again and erase the music from your iPod. (The easiest way is to create a playlist and put no music in it. Then set your iPod to sync selected playlists and select only the empty playlist.) With iTunes still running, look at the iPod preferences, and select "Enable disk use" or "Manually manage songs and playlists". Either one will allow you to use iPod as a drive.
The iPod should appear under "My Computer" and when you double click on the icon it should then look just like a hard drive. Copy your data files to it. When it is full, or you have copied everything, dismount the drive (don't just unplug it!) and connect it to your Mac. Its icon will appear on the desktop. Open it, drag the data to your folder(s).
Yes you are probably missing a couple plug-ins - Real and Flash. Go to their respective websites and download them. You will also need to get an updated WMV plug-in. Go to Microsoft's Mac website and get it - not WMV actually. Microsoft has chosen to drop WMV support and has licensed Flip4Mac to provide us with WMV support.
I cannot complain about Safari being slow perhaps your issue is RAM? Do you have 1GB or more? 512 is fairly meagre.

  • New macbook owner - any good free burning software?

    Hello,
I'm wondering if there are any good freeware options for burning software - a package to duplicate dvds/cds (audio and data) and burn files to a disc.
    Thanks in advanced
MacBook 2.0 Ghz 2 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

i use Toast (but you have to pay)
a REALLY good freeware application is liquid CD
it lets you burn disk images, copy disks, burn music, data etc.
Its a really great software, and what makes it even better, IT'S FREE!

  • Proud new MacBook owner

Well, I took the plunge today and bought my first Mac at the Apple store in my area. I've been trying to find a good notebook for school use and since you can now put Windows XP (For school program use) on a Mac I decided on the MacBook even though there is a current RSD scare.
First let me say, I could not be happier with the exception of 1 dead pixel almost in the dead center of the screen. I've tried massaging it out which has worked in the past for me but it didn't work. It is stuck as a black pixel so it's not too bad unless I have a white screen up. I get giddy with cool gadets so when I saw iAlertU and MacSaber I was like COOL! I'm quickly finding myself using my Windows PC for gaming and wanting some of the features on OS X. But, as a noob Mac user I do have a couple of quick questions:
1.) Is there a way to remove the white boarder around the dock so the icons sit alone down there.
2.) I have a 60GB HD but it only says I have 38gigs open. I know Apple has a ton of stuff on there I will never use so what is the best way to free up some space.

    1) Clear Dock takes the white tape from around the dock and allows you to set the color of the little triangles that indicate when a program is empty. You can find it (and lots of other good freeware) at macupdate.com or versiontracker.com. While you're there, take a look at QuickSilver and VirtueDesktops. I don't know how I lived without them before!
    2) Lots of people recommend removing garageband, iDVD, and languages you don't use as a way to clear up a lot of disk space. But it seems that removing languages in particular can be tricky (you use another free app called Monolingual) and I would search these boards for the threads on this issue before you do it.
    Hope that helps!

How do I permanently change the color of the font for the emails I send?  How do list Contacts by LAST name, not first?  How do I put this little emoticon button on my tool bar?  THANK YOU.  saljack

Order of contacts=Open contacts. Click on menu bar>preferences>general.
    What little emoticon?
Color permanently=as far as I know, you cannot change it.

  • Question to new MacBook owners

I've just got a MB and checking its Application/utilities folder I find the following files:
    iMac firmware updater
    iMac SMC firmware update
I just find it strange that it would say iMac when it's MB. And I only get error messages when I try to run them. Does your MB also have these files as iMac and not MB firmware updater?

thanks bunch! I guess somehow they got loaded on mine - no idea how. i haven't having problems trying to complete boot camp on my MB, it won't accept the Mac drivers software that was made by my MB. Hope this will resolve.

  • New  MacBook-owner router?

I am confused about the internet wireless wifi connection as I am use to a Pc.
To hook up with my roomate's dsl internet do I buy a router or do I have to buy the expensive apple airport device?
    Thanx AK

    Hi auk001,
When you do decide on a router, make sure to contact your roommate's ISP to determine if there are any special configuration steps for using a router. Some DSL connections require a PPoE connection (username & password) that information might need to be stored in your router. The ISP may (or may not) help you set it up but they'll at least give the necessary to do it yourself.

  • New macbook..a cry for help!!!!!!!!

    Hey all,
I bought a a black macbook on friday,my first mac and i have to say although happy to have it,i think i might have a few issues....but first let me say i'm not very tech savvy...
1st. i am noticing a slight rattle of some of the keys...QWEASDZXC basically the ones on the left hand side...i could be wrong but say for example, i press P a few times and then E i notice a distinct differnce in noise levels.
2nd. At times the trackpad seems to be a little slow on the take...it will work fine but every now and then i notice the cursor freeze for a split second.
3rd. when surfing the net i feel its not running at full speed(granted,i dont know what full speed should be)2 days ago when i first connected to internet via wireless,it more or less went to web pages instantaneously but ever since it seems to alot slower.if for example if download the apple page the 'frame' of the page will come in a second or 2 but all the captions etc will take anywhere up to 5/6 seconds more...is this normal???my father has a dell desk top which is 3 years old,my brother has a compaq (i think!)latop,i'm pretty sure neither one has had any signifcant memory upgrades, runs a few programmes etc and i'm certain they are faster then my mac.
4th.In general(and this could be down to me being unfamiliar with the machine) i feel that when going through applications etc,the machine just doesnt seem to be as fast as i had expected it be,i havent installed anything from the disks(as in,all the osx programmes are on it)maybe i need to get rid of some of them, but i just feel that if i think its slow after 2 days whats it going to be like when i start downloading stuff and really getting in to it etc???
Ok,so thats it for now...please believe when i say i'm not making these points in a complaining/whining type of way...apart from these issues the macbook looks great and i believe i've made to right move switching to apple...its just that my tech challenged gut instinct tells me that something is not right with the machine...or maybe my expectations are too high???...i dont think so.
so if any of you have any thoughts or ideas on the issues please post away...let me say again, this is not intented to be an angry post but i just want to get the best out of my new computer,
    thanks for listening/reading
    Paul.

bout ye (im in n.ireland atm ^_^ )
yes, if you quit the process now, it will start the
next time you open it, or it will start itself if its
a system process which automatically starts after
    boot up.
I do not use limewire and didnt know what it was,
after google it now I learnt that its a p2p file
transfering programme....and I suspect its eating up
    you ram.
What I would suggest you to try is restart your
computer, and this time dont run limewire, then
connect to the net as usual and run activity monitor
and see if there's any improvement.
    bout ya!
i'll give that a try, only concern is..i installed limewire whilst writing in this thread..ie it was running slow before!another thing i might try(if you advise it!)when i turned on the computer the first time i didnt and still havent used the intallations disks...i've read on other threads that i can take out programmes that i'm not going to use (for a while)such as garageband, iphoto etc, printer options and other languages...this might free things up for me?all in all, still think its pretty strange...havent seen many other threads from new macbook owners with 1gb...
    thanks,
    PAul.

  • Brand new macbook and unable to update apps.

Hi. I am a new macbook owner, and I have six apps that need to be updated. Every time I go to the app store and click "update," it says: "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."  I don't understand why, because I have used the same Apple ID for everything since I bought the notebook.  This began happening after I installed the new iOS update, Yosemite.
    Thanks.

Are you using a cable like this one or an adapter like this? If you're using the latter then many people have reported troubles, however the former works quite well.
You can also use Time Machine to restore, so if your old machine is hooked up to an external HD setup for TM use that.
I'd recommend you look over Pondini's overview on Setup Assistant Tips.

Where can I find an Owner's Manual for my new MacBook Pro?

You should have gotten one w/your new MBP.  If not, check out Apple - Support - Manuals & download the one for your model MBP.
