Why does my Mac Mini go into a safe boot mode after I put it to sleep?

HI, can you tell us how you know it's Safe Mode?
Not sure if this applies to the new Macs, but if not I doubt it'll hurt anything...
After using Safe Boot, to return to a normal startup, execute this command in Terminal or the command line:
          sudo nvram boot-args=""

  • E mac only starts up in safe boot

Having accidently pressed a few keys on the keyboard while not paying much attention to what was happening to my computer it just switched itself off!!! (I think it was the F15 button that was pressed!) Now it only starts in safe mode and I can't get many of the applications to work, internet connection to name one. How can i get it to start in normal mode again?
Can anyone shed some light on what I've stupidly done and how can I solve it please?
    Thanking you in anticipation

    wim,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Do you mean the Mac always starts up in Safe Mode, without you pressing the shift key? You could try starting with the keyboard disconnected to see if it starts normally. If that's the case, check that the shift keys on your keyboard aren't stuck. You can jiggle the keys, or carefully pry them up and check for anything gumming the key post contact (keyboard keys pry off coming straight up and are replaced pressing straight down; on long keys such as the spacebar, shift keys, and Enter key, there's a wire spring that needs to be folded into the clips underneath).

  • Why can't I boot into safe boot mode?

I can't seem to boot my Mac Pro (mid 2010) into safe boot mode.  Hold down the shift key and it starts, but the progress bar never goes more than 1/3 and the gear just spins.  Any suggestions of what this means and how to fix it?  OS 10.6.8.

I have had the exact problem for a while.  I finally tried a suggestion from applecare.  I had a spare hard drive, erased it, reinstalled mac OSX 10.7 (the issue occurred with 10.6 and 10.7 on my Mac Pro system) and rebuilt my entire system one program at a time.  I would safe boot between installs, looking for the culprit (applecare suggested it was likely a third party vendor install that created the problem.)  I installed multiple programs, tested safe boot without a hitch.  The problem occurred after I installed ReadIris Pro (a comprehensive scanner and OCR program).  It created this very problem you and I both seem to have.
Please respond if you have this software package (or any of the IRIS family programs).  It is possible it changed a configuration file or interacts with something else on the system.  Simply deleting the program does not seem to undo the problem.

  • Various application crashes after safe boot

On start up of Mac OS 10.6.2, safe boot was initiated automatically. (Possible system crash during previous run?) Since this point I have restarted in normal mode. Now all applications that were not already running during previous normal session quit on start up, (icon gets as far as jumping stage, but no further). Time Machine opens, but quits when attempted restore is chosen. Most applications run OK in safe mode. Have already reset PRAM but no change. Unable to open Crash report as well to post on here. Any ideas? Thanks.

Thanks Neville, have tried that. Carried out necessary repair which was successful. Re-ran repair and message confirmed no further repair needed. Restarted in normal mode but still have same problem. The only programs working are Mail, Safari, itunes, and Finder. These are the ones that were running before problem. Tested crash report no difference. Re-ran Time Machine but now 'restore' button is shaded out, whereas previously able to select and only crashed when tried to replace desktop files to previous point.

  • Post safe boot ALL emails from third party URL hosting appeared

I host a half dozen websites on Hostgator. I design those websites using RapidWeaver from RealMac Software. Yosemite has disenabled several of my sites from opening, so I can't migrate to RWv6.0.1. I've been working with their HELP Team for last week, and they asked me to restart in Safe Mode (Safe Boot), which I did, although it doesn't seem to have helped with RW, yet, but we continue to slog to get there. Here's my immediate problem. Immediately following the Safe Boot, when attempting to go back to my "normal" email activity, my Mail app has now put in a new category of email that includes ALL the email addresses that I have set up for clients on Hostgator. I can see everything, and I have no interest or business seeing such. So, how do I remove all of those, except the three that are my own for use with specific client business? Thanks in advance for any assistance you all might be able to lend.

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1795765
I think your problems were solvable and not that the Sonnet card and 5,1 is not bootable, in fact the 5,1 is easier, there are more supported cards.
I have the 1,1 where the Sonnet Pro is recommended but for data only and are not bootable because of the 32-bit EFI firmware. NOT the 4,1 and 5,1. The 2008's are problem child and have a mix of PCIe 1.1 slots, first implementation of EFI64 that also has problems. Also the 4,1 has two PCIe 2.x slots 3 and 4 that share a controller but that simply limits bandwidth.
I would have left the TRIM support and NVRAM changes in Yosemite to a separate thread if you wanted to focus on the Sonnet Tempo Pro support in Mac Pro 2010-12 5,1s.
Also the make of SSD can vary and they also have their own firmware as do bootable controllers along with the EFI of the Mac, all of which have to work together.  Meaning it might be that Samsung 840 va 840 EVO vs 840 Pro will all be slightly different but my experience is Samsungs work well (as do others like Crucial with the proper firmware - and there was/is an issue with the firmware of the Samsung 840 but not with booting).
The PCIe card gets seen and treated as external and therefore 'eject' but of course you can't when it is the system boot drive.
One thing I found last week and meant to mention:  After installing or changing PCIe cards, RESET SMC made all the difference in the world with the long boot delay. Some PCIe cards will add a few seconds, system has to search the device tree which now shows another controller with multiple devices - and sometimes NVRAM and SMC are what I will call "dirty" and need to be rebuilt and reset.

  • Stuck in safe boot

I was working on a profeciency test for a job agency and after finishing the test my keyboard was stuck typing everything in caps (caps lock was off and my shift key was not stuck either). I didn't know what to do so I just restarted my computer. Upon restarting the computer automatically booted into "safe boot" and wouldn't let me log in. My password and username was typed in correctly but for some reason it just didn't accept it. Is there a way I can restart my mac and get out of safe boot?
I tried to restart and hold the "shift" key while it was booting and that did nothing. I also tried holding "command + S" and still nothing. It would just keep booting into safe boot and reject my password.

    Hello there, Arustemi1.
The following Knowledge Base article explains using Safe Mode:
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
Of particular note is the following:
To leave Safe Mode, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • Yosemite automatic safe boot

Recently i had so many problems with the installationf of yosemite, finally it finished installing but now every time i turn my mac it enters automatically to safe boot, what can i do?

Boot into Recovery (command+R), and use Disk Utility to verify/repair permissions, and then verify/repair your boot drive.

  • Can only Safe Boot

I seem to be in a world of trouble right now.
It all started simply enough. I had Parallels running when I had to do something. When I got back my iMac was asleep, no biggy. I simple woke it up but when I did everything was frozen. So I waited for a few minutes... still nothing so I turned it off using the power button.
Turn it back on, the usual grey screen with the Apple on it. Followed by the grey screen without the apple, then a blue one, then yet another grey screen... and then that is it. Tried restarting again but ended up with the same sequence with just a grey screen and cursor by the end yet again. Kept trying and sometimes the screen will even dim into the black screen of death telling me to restart but nothing more.
So I tried booting from my OS X Install Disc... nothing, I get the same grey screen. I can't even boot a Mac disc. Tried a Linux disc and it worked. No such luck with anything OS X related even from a disc right now. Did a hardware test using my OS X Tiger disc by holding down the key and it said everything is fine.
Pretty worried by this stage I then try doing a Safe Boot... it works! So the next step is to do a normal reboot... But then I get the same sequence as before. I can only seem to Safe Boot. Safe Boot even allows me to boot Mac install discs. So I used Disk Utility, it said my hard drive was fine. There were a lot of permission issues but it fixed most of them. But I still can't boot unless I use Safe Boot.
Since I can't even boot from the Mac Install disc without using Safe Boot I'm guessing a re-install would be pointless at this stage.
So here I am using Safe Boot, can anyone please help me?

Hi C, sorry to take long to be back.
    So we have:
Power up leads to a normal boot process until the launchd calls the login window.
Safe boot is successful but the system restart from here is not.
From this point the next one is to reset PRAM and NVRAM as stated in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570.
To perform this reset use these guide http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 and return to steps in the first one.
After this reset If normal boot still don't work is time to insert Install DVD and use Disk Utility.
It would be useful to use the verbose boot on any attempt by holding COMMAND+V in addiction to any other key combination and read the screen printed messages so you can maybe see any warning that could be an evidence to the problem origin.
BEFORE any of these recover steps you should disconnect all cables, wait a minute or so and connect only the essential for use, that would be the power cable.
The first troubleshooting guide has a long list of procedures to perform in sequence that if not lead to a successful boot will advice you to backup your data (safe boot, connect usb/firewire external disk, copy data) and drive your Mac to Apple Service. Use this guide and take detailed note of what happens and bring it here so we can have more data to work with.
    Good luck.

Puis, rebranchez l'IPAD.

    UPDATING post above.
Excel slowing down is particularly when I do "copy" or "paste" (up to 3 seconds before the action is taken into account).
I tried with empty or very small files, problem is the same.
I checked autoupdates of Microsoft, everything is up to date.
I made the test of David Linc, with no issue.
Anyone having same situation or solution ?

  • My mac book air keeps starting in safe boot mode. I cant enter my password as it is caps lock so i cant access my computer. Please can someone please help me start back in normal mode? Thank you

MY Macbook air keeps starting in "safe boot" mode, no idea why. I cannot get into the system because this mode makes everything write in capital letters and my password is in lower case. I keep turning it off and on but nothing changes and i cannot access my computer. Please can someone help me? Thank you

I'm not getting a clear picture at all of what problems you're seeing. If you are seeing online accounts have their passwords changed, those accounts are being hacked. Someone may already have access to some account and is using that access to reset passwords on other accounts. Change the password on EVERY online account you have. Be sure to use a strong password, and don't use the same password on more than one site.
If you are seeing changes to your bookmarks and browser history, your Apple ID may be one of the accounts that has been hacked. After changing the password on your Apple ID, you need to lock it down with two-factor authentication:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5570
Beyond that, we will need additional details about what specific symptoms you're seeing in order to help further. One thing I can say, though, is that these problems are very unlikely to be due to any kind of malware. See my Mac Malware Guide to learn more on that topic.
