Powebook G4 1.67 wont startup without power cord

All of a sudden my Powerbook G4 1.67 running 10.4.11 wont run without being connected to the wall outlet. I did that thing, where you turn off the computer, remove the battery and hold the power button. Unknown if that was suppose to work or not, not a computer person. When you press the button on the battery it says its full. Anyone please help, don't have money at this time to get fixed by professional or buy a new MAC, even though I want to.

I also tried holding down Command + Option + P + R upon restart until second chime and then let go. Also the disk utility using the verify an repair buttons. Neither obviously worked
Those things might be worth trying, but they typically don't help a power problem. There are 4 components of the power circuit: power adapter, dc-in card, battery, and logic board. Your power adapter is working, since the computer runs off the power adapter, the dc-in card seems OK, the battery looks OK, and that leaves the logic board. Unfortunately there's not an automated test for power issues, so we have to diagnose them by elimination. The symptoms point to a logic board issue.
Your least cost choice is use power only. Next, talk to your local Apple store, and see if the system is eligible for repair at the Apple Depot. If the case is in good shape, repair will cost around $350 (they replace anything needed to make it almost new). If the case is banged up the repair can cost over $600, since they would replace the case. Otherwise, if running on battery power is important, you can try and find a used logic board and either replace it yourself or use a business that replaces logic boards.

it won't wake up without a power cord.
when I walk away from the computer and close the lid, when I open it again and hit the space bar nothing happens. I have to hit the power up button and still nothing happens. then I plug in the cord and I get the grayed out screen and see the energy coming back with the white stripes loading across the screen.
Now I just pulled out the cord with it on and sat there for 1 minute to see what happened. The computer shut down! My MacBook effectively can't get the energy off my battery. What is going on??

  • HP printers without power cords!

    Hello,
Why HP's printers have been shipped without a power cords in some countries? Is it because HP aims to deliver it quickly and making the power cords would delay the delivery process?
    Thanks in advanced

    Hi,
Very good question. In my country, the laws protect comsumers and every electical machine MUST have a right power cord. Probably it's bit relax in your country and they (could me many vendors) can get away with that.

  • MacBook shuts off without power cord, even when battery is charged

I bought my MacBook in October. I've been treating it really delicately. But for some reason, it will not run without the power cord plugged in (as of yesterday morning).
If I pull it out, it shuts down. If I try to start it up without the cord, it shuts down. It gets about 2-3 seconds before it just shuts off. (It will run in sleep mode without the cord plugged in.)
And for a brief time yesterday evening, it worked without the cord plugged in.
This is my first Mac and I have no idea what is going on.

This is a recently common issue with Macbook Lith-ion batteries.
You have a defective battery, although AppleTech defines defective as a battery below 350 cycle counts. That's the lifetime of your $130 battery, which may average between 6-13 months depending on how you use it.
Some customers have had to buy 3 batteries in the past 2 years because AppleCare doesn't cover consumable items, eg. batteries.
check consumer comments at http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?fnode=h ome/shopmac/macaccessories/power&revw=MA561LL/A
I'm hoping Apple will realize that a $130 macbook battery with a 350 cycle count lifetime, doesn't live up to "Apple" standards. Lith-ion batteries are known to have a 2-3 year lifetime not 6-13 months.
Customers shouldn't have to purchase AppleCare only to realize they have to continuously purchase new batteries every 6-13 months.
This is truly a manufacturer defect in my personal opinion.

  • 09 macbook pro, after 10.6.6 update won't wake from sleep without power

Hey, weird thing going on here. After I updated to 10.6.6 on my '09 Macbook Pro it won't wake from having the lid closed unless the power is plugged in. I've tried closing the lid with the power still plugged in, and unplugging it before I close the lid. If I leave he power plugged in it works fine. If I unplug it after I've closed the lid, or even BEFORE I close the lid (and give it time to calculate battery life and everything) it turns off like it was a out of battery and I have to hold the power button down to make it wake, then it does the blurred out screen with the progress bar at the bottom (like recovering from low battery), but eventually comes back. The battery indicator on the bottom shows it has a nearly full battery when this is happening. I've tried adjusting sleep and power/energy saving settings but nothing has fixed it.... anyone got some ideas? It never did this before the 10.6.6 update
    Thanks!

    Im having the same issue.
Seems to have happened just after 10.6.6 upgrade
Battery only has 80 cycles on it and shows full charge
i dont get the hybernate wakeup screen, but shuts down promptly after unplugged, and wont startup without power.
    Tried:
*SMC RESET-holding power without battery in for over 5 seconds...no change
*P RAM RESET-holding commandoption+pr during startup... no change
*Installed applejack and ran all options... worked... for about 20 minutes then shutdown
    *Changed sleep settings...battery settings...hibernating settings...
    im outta ideas....

  • Crashing mac. power cord?

I've heard of laptops and macs etc. battery dying and will not power without power cord in, however my mac seems to keep crashing if power cord is in and gets knocked or taken out, however left for about 30seconds off will power up again without power cord in... but power cord will then not work until i've unplugged from the wall, fiddled around with it for a bit... after about 5 mins the power cord will work again.
This happens every time the cord is knocked or taken out. Also, after crashing the macbook will then ask me to confirm "incoming connections" .. after googling what ones they were they were things from my microsoft office package and mail and nothing suspicious. Clock will also go to 00:00 1/1/ etc, but if i click on the date& time preferenes it sorts itself out and goes back to normal date and time.
Itunes also restarts and needs me to confirm... not sure about other programmes yet.. but no files or data has been lost.
    Just everything resets?
Wondering if anyone else has heard of this? If anyone might know if it's the power cord tripping out and somehow glitching the macbook?
I don't have any issues with my battery draining abnormally, and once the power cord is up and running and plugged in, it's charging fine. Just a bit confused. I've never heard or experienced anything like this before!
I live with my laptop for my uni stuff so any info would be great!
    Thanks, Georgie
Ps. I have a express lane phone appointment booked for friday, but just wondered if anyone had any information in the mean time.

Hi...it sounds like I've been having similar problems as well. This has happened when I tried resetting the SMC twice and the PRAM.. it has done it twice since then after fiddling around with the adapter. It's like it goes to sleep by itself right and then you awake it and then it shuts down? When I restart it I'm having to press the power button lots of times to get it to start and then it tells me to accept stuff and reset the clock. Same symptoms you are having? If you find out what the problem is, and if I'm able to fix this too myself...I'd like it if you post back here! I'm also having problems with the battery showing "Not Charging" on the indicator and having the adapter light a steady green, which I am going to have to get it looked into as well. Thanks!!!

  • Power Mac Wont StartUp

My Power Mac just decided not to start up this morning, I have checked the power cords, its working fine, the power outlet its working fine, Is there a way i can check to see if there is Power getting to the board

If by "not to start up" you mean no response at all to the power button, then you need to first check power supply response. With the power cord plugged into the wall, disconnect it from the computer. Reconnect it to the computer. You should hear a small click coming from the power supply on each event. This would be the standby circuits energizing in the power supply.
If you hear the click, then next clue is whether you get the white LED to light when pressing the power button.
It would also help if you provide more specific model information, as there are five major "waves" of Power Mac G5 machines. Find the serial number on the build label and use this site to get that information: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
The build label is found by removing the side panel and looking just below where the processor(s) sit.

  • Elitepad 900 wont turn on without power in socket

hello, i just got a elitepad 900, it works fine when i have the power cord plugged in. and also when the powercord is plugged almost in(just a little bit in where it dosnt charge but is still plugged in.  but the second i remove the power cord completely, it shuts down and i cant turn it on before i plug the charger in again..

  • PowerMac G5 Wont Startup - Dead Battery???

Hey yall, I have a 1.6 GHz BASE model PCI G5 with 4gigs of ram (maxed) and 80 gig hdd. My concern is that I unplugged it for a schedued power outage, and now it wont boot back up. Worked fine before. I replaced the PSU just in case, but same thing happens. The light on the front stays on for a second, then shuts off. No internals can be heard turning on. It has a 3rd party power cord, but it has been working just fine - first one was getting worn. Any ideas? Could it be the "VRAM Battery"? Thanks

    Hello,
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

A flashing disk icon means the bootloader that starts up your Mac can't find a suitable startup disk. Something happened to the internal HDD to cause this, the damage may be repairable or not.
Ive tried inserting the installation disk and reinstalling it but the destination window is empty [i dont see my disk]...please help with a fix...
It can't see the disk for the same reason that the bootloader couldn't. Let's try to see if it is fixable before reinstalling everything and losing all your settings. Since you already are able to start up from the Install CD/DVD, go to the Utilities menu and select *Disk Utility*. There, check and see if the HDD device appears on the left column. Under and indented you should see the volume by name.
If the device does not appear, then it is really hosed and you will need a new one.
If it appears, with or without the volume, it means it is damaged but may be repairable. Click on the device and do a *Repair Disk*. If it says there are errors, repeat *Repair Disk* until it comes out clean with no more errors. After that, reboot and see if the Mac will start up correctly. When it does, run Disk Utility again (it is found inside the startup volume's Utilities folder) and do a *Repair Disk Permissions*. If all is well, you'll be a happy camper and your Mac will live to see another day.
If you can't get the *Repair Disk* procedure to come out without errors, it means that the damage is more severe and Disk Utility can't repair it. You can either get heavier duty tools, like TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior, or you can choose to format the HDD and reinstall afresh. Note that you will lose everything. If you decide to format and the formatting has errors, it also means the drive is permanently damaged and will need to be replaced.
Let us know how it turned out and welcome to Apple Discussions.

  • G5 Wont Startup

    Hey Guys!
So I have a G5 tower that wont startup. Heres whats going on:
-When I try to start it up normally it gets to the spinning grey wheel then turns off.
-Resetting the PRAM does nothing. I might need a new PRAM battery but I'm not sure if that explains the symptoms. I ordered a new one though, should be here soon.
-When I try to boot off a Tech Tool Pro DVD I get a kernel panic screen, that says You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button blah blah blah... The text on the screen ends with BSD process name corresponding to current thread:kernel_task
-Tried to boot off the Tech Tool DVD with the HD unplugged, same error.
-When I try to start up in safe mode it stays on the spinning grey wheel for a couple of minutes, then turns off.
-In single user mode ran fsck -y and it returns:
    disk0s3: I/O error.
    Invalid node structure
    (4,275)
    **Volume check failed
/dev/rdisk0s3 (hfs) EXITED WITH SIGNAL 8
    and then says
'PowerManagement emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep!'
    Over and over.
-I reset the nvram in open firmware earlier, which did nothing, but now when I try to start up in open firmware the screen just stays black and nothing happens.
-Earlier, booting in verbose mode would return some errors, then shut down immediately, but now its just goes to a black screen as well.
-Resetting the PMU didn't do anything.
-Switched the RAM around, so I'm pretty sure its not a problem with the RAM, or the RAM slots.
Any ideas on what's going on or what I should do next? Or should I just wait for the new PRAM battery? Thanks for helping!

Any areas I should concentrate on?
CPU heatsinks, Video card, RAM, Fans, Power supply.
about a foot away from my 10' sub. Could that have caused the damage?
I wouldn't think so, at least yet.
So how would I go about fixing the HD? TDM maybe?
Yes, but I think we have to take care of the heat issue first.

Try to boot your computer in Safe Mode: restart and hold the shift key down.
This can take some time, so be patient.

If thyis leads to the computer booting, you can restart without holding the shift key down.
