Power Adapter connection

For no apparent reason, the power adapter for my new MBA 11" sometimes won't connect or charge -- no green and no amber -- despite reattaching it and jiggling it.  Then without explanation it will later connect and start charging.
Is this a power adapter problem or some anomaly with the MBA itself?

Try reseting the SMC, here is a link explaining how to.

  • Just purchased an 11" Mac Book Air, and I'm using it as a desktop. Is it ok to lea the power adapter connected all the time?

I'm using my macbook air as a desktop unit, with an auxiliary flat panel display, as well as an external storage drive and a CD/dvd drive. Is it safe to leave the power adapter connected to the computer all the time? Will the battery life get affected or shortened by being fully charged all the time?

Apple recommends that for best battery life, you allow the battery to discharge occasionally.

  • Macbook Pro won't wake up even with power adapter connected

If I use my Macbook to the point where the battery completely die, it will not power up again even with the power adapter connected. It takes about 15-20 minutes of charging before it will wake up again. It seems as though it can't draw power directly from the adaptor, but must wait until the battery is sufficiently charged, and draw power from the battery. I can't imagine this is a design decision. Any help?

Part of this time may involve attempting to read a damaged sleep image file, bewlatbrutha.
You should note, too that the batteries in these computers have a built in microprocessor of their own to try to prevent them from being damaged by discharging too deeply. If you discharge to the point where even the battery's own processor has to shut down you may never be able to resurrect your battery without outside help (and sometimes not even then). Almost all Lithium Polymer and Lithium Ion batteries (regardless of what they are fitted to) have this sort of protection. The battery has to have a certain minimum charge at all time to keep its own processor running.
Even without reaching this point it is not good for Lithium batteries to be regularly discharged to the point where the computer has to sleep or shut down. You risk severely shortened battery life if you do this regularly.

  • Hissing sound with wi-fi and power adapter connected

This is quite annoying - when the power adapter is connected and I have a w-fi connection to the internet I get intermittent 'hissing' sounds - however when I remove the lead and run off the battery this no longer happens. Does this happen to anyone else?!

What problem are you having ?
If you have the 'this iPad hasn't been backed up' message on screen and you can't remove it try a soft-resetave you tried a reset ? : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
When the iPad has restarted you can then force a backup via Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Back Up Now

  • Ground loop with TV when power adapter connected

I have a white Macbook (non-unibody) which I have connected to my TV with a mini-dvi to VGA adapter. I have done the same in the past with my Dell 1525 with no issues. When the Macbook is connected to the display whilst being connected with the power adapter, the screen has interference. After some googling I believe this is because of a ground loop. The monitor displays fine when the power adapter is removed.
Since I am using some processor-intensive applications my battery life doesn't last long, and it is incredibly inconvenient to have to keep plugging the adapter in and out.
Any suggestions on a cable to remove the ground feed or other solutions? I have already tried resetting the PRAM.

You might need an electrician to check or replace the electrical outlet or wiring, if it really is a ground loop. Try temporarily plugging the TV and Mac into the same surge strip. If the interference goes away, then the fault is likely in the outlet(s) that the Mac and TV are plugged in to. (The surge strip puts both devices on the "same outlet" thus eliminating the ground loop between outlets in your home wiring. Of course, a bad or old surge strip could cause a ground loop as well so if you're already using a surge strip, try another surge strip in case the ground loop is in the strip.)
Why don't you see it on the Dell? Likely because the Dell's power adapter has a transformer in it, which serves to isolate the electrical circuits between the devices. TVs and desktop computers often do not have this type of "isolation" transformer anymore, so ground loop interference can be more noticable. BTW, they do sell isolation transformers, but they're mostly for TV technician troubleshooting and not designed for continuous use. One that can handle a TV's electrical load can cost more than an electrician, so don't bother. You might be able to find a smaller, lower cost one to handle the Mac, but it still would mean a issue with the electrical wiring that may get worse over time. So IMO, better to spend the money on a electrician.

  • Bad power adapter connection?

Just recently started happening... but the connection of my power adapter to my MBP is faulty. Even though it's connected, the light doesn't turn on and it continues to run on battery. I have to fiddle with the plug for a bit before the connection establishes. Then after that, the connection isn't reliable. It sometimes drops on its own.
Has anyone else experienced this? Will a simple cleaning of the pins help? If so, what's the correct procedure for cleaning? Should I just take it to an apple store?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forums!
First, examine your MagSafe plug and port for any debris which might prevent the pins from making contact. You can wipe them with a damp microfiber cloth or paper towel. If all looks ok, and you have wiped them off and still experience the issue, then yes, visit an Apple Store. Since you're in Santa Clara, you won't have far to travel!
    Hope this helps...

You could try resetting the Power Management Unit -
    To reset the PMU:
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
    3. Wait 5 seconds.
    4. Press the Power button to restart the computer.
Resetting the NVRAM might also help:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
Your system may need to calibrate the battery.

  • Can BT sport run through the power adapter connect...

I am running BT vision through powerline adapters but have ordered BT sport. Will it work?
    I am currently getting ESPN.
Clicking on BT sport etc gets a message saying I am not in and Infinity area... but I have it? Do i need the Cat5 link to be installed?

The broadband channels will work through powerline adapters, however it's not recommended and not supported.  If you do this you could experience poor performance when watching broadband-based channels.

  • "No airport card is installed" when power adapter is not connected

    Hi
I am getting the "No Airport Card is Installed' message whenever my Macbook Pro does not have the power adapter connected. When the power is connected everything works fine. If it is disconnected, the airport icon turns grey, airport disappears, and I can't turn on airport anymore.
    Thanks

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Are you using an original AirPort card and not an AirPort Extreme card? The AirPort Extreme card is not compatible with a G3 iBook and installation of an AirPort Extreme card can, in fact, damage the iBook's logic board beyond repair.
Are you following the installation instructions, as outlined in this Apple Knowledge Base article?

  • Powerbook G4 won't charge battery or run with power adapter plugged in.

My Titanium Powerbook G4 will not charge the battery or run with the power adapter plugged in. When plugged in the power adapter doesn't change to amber showing its charging. Instead it has a green light that flashes off and on. I thought it was a defective power adapter but when its plugged in to another powerbook its seems to be working properly. I reset the PMU but that didn't help. I have been unable to find anything that would tell me what a flashing green means.
    Powerbook Titanium G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi, Marshall. With no power being supplied to the Mac for several months, not only has your main battery gone flat (and may never again be able to take a charge), but your internal backup battery has also gone flat. A Tibook with a dead backup battery generally will not start up at all, even with AC power connected.
Try this: remove the main battery and leave the AC power adapter connected overnight in an attempt to recharge the backup battery. If the Powerbook won't start in the morning under AC power, the backup battery is shot, has lost the ability to be charged, and must be replaced.
If the PB starts up in the morning on AC power, set the date and time correctly, shut the computer down, insert the main battery, and allow 48 hours with AC power connected in an attempt to charge the main battery. Then disconnect the AC adapter and try to start up under battery power. If that doesn't work, and no lights or only one flashing light appear when you press the power-indicator button on the battery, you'll have to replace the main battery.

  • 2 monitors, laptop closed, power adapter removed = sleep

    I have a Macbook Pro Retina 15 "
    It is running Mavericks 10.9.2
I have the following setup working:
    - 2 dell monitors plugged in via 2 thunderbolt ports
    - The macbook lid closed
    - The power adapter connected
The problem arises, when I unplug the poweradapter; When I do so, the laptop goes to sleep.
I would like to be able to unplug the power adapter, so I can treat the laptop battery better and extend its lifespane and quality.
    How do I achieve that?
    Thanks,
    Brad

  • My iPod Nano 4thgen only opens when connected to a pc and/or power adapter

My iPod Nano 4thGen. was brand new and I followed each and every step in the manual. I was able to connect to a computer/iTunes but after disconnecting it from the cable, the power just turns off, I pressed any key on it but failed to put the power on. I then attached it to a power adapter/charger having suspected empty battery but after I disconnected it a few hours later, the power immediately shuts down. What could've been the problem?

I have had the same problem with my daughter's IPOD nano. Spoke with several technicians to try to fix the problem to be told it was a battery problem and to send it in it was covered under warranty. Was told that it was a problem with many of the nanos. I sent it in to have it returned with 1 week stating that it had "liquid spill or submersion damage indicated by the pink/red color of liquid submersion indicator located inside headphone jack." It has not had liquid or submersion damage and I can't prove otherwise. It works only if it is attached to computer. Will not turn on unless attached to computer. Maybe I am wrong but it it has damaged by water would it still work plugged into computer. Now I am out $200.00. This frustrates my because my ipod shuffle quit working 2 months after I got it. Thats why I bought the nano thinking it was better quality.

  • I just put a new battery into my MacBook and it sometimes says Not Charging when it is connected to a power adapter.

Does anyone know what this might mean?  My battery just went down to 7 percent charge even though it had been connected to the power adapter for quite some time.  At least a few days.  I didn't notice that the battery wasn't charging.  Now it says it is charging again, but every once in a while I notice it has gone to not charging.  Any ideas?
    Thanks

Oftentimes the travel chargers connectors and pins just build up dirt and grime. When it says not charging it's able to give enough power to function but not charge. Try wiping it down with a cloth!

  • New Macbook Pro FileVault Encrpytion Paused "Connect power adapter to resume encryption"

Does anyone have information on what is causing the FileVault encryption error with OS X Yosemitie? I just purchased a new 15 inch 2.5 GHz (mid-2014) MacBook Pro and during the initial installation / setup I elected to use FileVault to encrypt my 250GB SSD. As the encryption process was completing, it gave me an error stating the encryption was paused and "Connect power adapter to resume encryption."
The MacBook Pro is connected to its power supply. I should note this is my second MBP, I had this same issue with the 1st MBP, which was returned to Apple and replaced with another new MBP. I just don't understand how Apple can release an OS with an option to encrypt the drive if it doesn't work.

So, after 30 minutes with a support person on chat I asked to be escalated. During the time I waited for the sr. tech to come online I decided the best course of action was to erase the disk and re-install Yosemite. The sr. tech came on and said they are very much aware of this issue and the solution is to erase the disk and re-install Yosemite. This was quite easy.
I followed these instructions which matched what the sr. tech provided: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
Just be sure to erase the correct disk. For me it was the 2nd Macintosh HD in the list.
Also be sure to choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format, not Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted).
You'll need to re-install the included apps (Pages, Garage Band, etc.) by going to the App Store and choosing Purchased.
    Hope this helps!

  • MacBook pro shuts down instead of sleeping while connected to power adapter

    Hi there,
I am currently facing a rather strange issue. My old MacBook pro (about 2 years old) shuts down instead of sleeping but only when it is connected to the power adapter. I mean it goes to sleep mode perfectly well when it works only with the battery. Is it a know issue ? I'm running 10.5.6 and this problem is quite new to me (happened the first time some weeks ago).
Thank you in advance for your answer.

You might try resetting the SMC and see if this helps:
