Power Adapter fails

I have one of the powerchords HP wants to replace because there is a risk of it melting or catch a fire. I have had an issue with my whole adapter since this summer, the first time it overheated big time and didnt charge my laptop anymore, after a cooldown period of an hour it started working again but now it completely stopped functioning. When i called the Dutch helpdesk i was told that the powerchord has nothing to do with my dead adapter and since i purchased too long ago i had no more rights and would have to purchase a new adapter. Funny thing is, the first time i called an employee, she said HP would probarbly replace the adapter too, but i didnt have my serial number presence and she couldnt help me that time. Next time i called , i was told i had to purchase a new one.
I would like an explanation why an adapter that died because of overheating is not dead because of a powerchord that might overheat or melt.

thanks for your quick reply.
Yes, it is the original charger that is dead. (sorry for calling it adapter, dutch word  for it, sounded english )
I did call the dutch helpdesk 3 times , first time i didnt have the serial number, second time the connection was ended when i said i wasnt pleased with the answer and  the last time they said HP procedures said : powerchord recall has nothing to do with your  dead charger. Never did any of the employees suggest to escalate it. I dont really feel like calling again.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus AC Power adapter failed. Where to buy?

My AC power adapter failed. Where can I purchase a new one in Doha?

There should be an electronics store near there. Go into google maps, bring up Doha, then search nearby and put in 'hp printers' which should be up some sort of electronics retailer.
If that doesn't work, then go to HP.com, put in your printer model, and follow the links, and you should be able to order one online. Just make sure you specify your region in your search, so that it doesn't think you are in Ireland, when you are actually in Qatar.

  • New power adapter fail

My friend lost my original power adapter and she bought me a new adapter, however, this adapter causes me lots of problems-it works sometimes, but often I found it failed to work(the light is off, doesn't charge at all), you never know when it is gonna work, I wondering if the adapter has defect?

there was an SMC update for that.

  • Macbook air power adapter fail?

My 8 month old Macbook Air power adapter seems to have failed. It may appear to work (amber light glows when plugged in) for a while, but it stops working soon after. Is there something that can be done? Is this covered by warranty?

It's still under waranty so Apple should replace it for you.  See "additional information" at the bottom of this article.

  • House Blew a Fuse, Power Adapter Fails

Well i just got this computer for christmas, so it's all brand new. Earlier today, the laptop was plugged in, on, and closed. Charging Just fine. The house blew a fuse. I went and reset the fusebox, now my magsafe (L style) poweradapter isnt coming back on. The laptop is fine.
I've left the power adapter alone for about an hour, tried different outlets (confirmed the outlets were powered), and the little green light still isnt coming on. Suggestions?

Hi, well my second 85w magsafe power adapter is fry now.... My first one (the original one) I have used for about 3 years, plug in 95% of his time to 110v or 220v. But few months a go he died on me. Same thing happened, the adapter was plug in to the outlet but not connected to computer, the house fuse blew for no reason at that moment, but later on that day when i try to recharge my laptop battery, surprise power adapter is was gone, fry, burn..... Now I got a new one $75 US, use it for 1 week and this one died on me today, I was working on my laptop and he warn me that, battery is low, I connected the power adapter and after few seconds the laptop told me again to connect the power line, battery is low... looking at the led light it was off and I........... exploded Now questions is there any problem with my laptop? My laptop looks that is working fine is getting little bit warm when working hard.... Power adapter needs to get warm to hot when charging or in use? Thanks!

  • EZXS88W Maybe power adapter fail???

Intermittantly, (0 to 5 times a day) the power light will go off and on with a result of all lights for the 8 ports going off and then all on while it resets and this may happen several times sucessivly. Of course the Computer loses the 100mb connection.
I've metered the Linksys 3.3vdc .3a power supply when it is operating correctly with a Fluke 89IV meter and it indicates 3.5602vdc. I have no way of monitoring the p/s when it fails as the failures only lasts for a second or so.
Switch currently has just one desktop and sometimes two laptops plugged in and it uplinks to a Linksys Wireless G Router. I'm not expierencing data failures that I know of.
    Do I just have a defective p/s?

I'm having the same problem, i have a Linksys SRX200.
this reboot like 10 times per day.

  • Why does my 60W MagSafe power adapter fail to work at times?

I have had my MacBook 13" for a year now and this is the second time the charger has failed, allthough it is working allright now.
I remember the first time a coupe of months after I recieved my laptop the Apple tech had me do some adjusting to my system
preferences if I remember correctly. It worked fine till now so having forgot what the fix was the last time I unplugged the adapter
checked it out and the connections on my notebook as well.I then removed it from my surge protector and plugged it into a wall
outlet. It worked but wait, then I returned it to the surge protector and it also worked so now I am at a loss.Computer problem or
just the adapter, what do you think?

I begin to understand. Nevertheless, "Mozilla Support" would be understood by an average person with average capacity to include the support of anything Mozilla produces, or so it would seem.

  • IPad power adapter fails??

I have had the iPad for about the week and experiencing something unusual with my charger. When it is plugged in and charging, it gets warm and after a while it smells like burning. I am using iOS 4.2.1 and iPad is connected to wifi and Bluetooth speakers with Minimum brightness. Please tell me if there is something going wrong? Thanks

That is not normal. You have a hardware issue. Contact Apple NOW.

  • Spilled Drink - Laptop won't recognise power adapter + screen backlight

    Hi.
The other day, I had my 17" MacBookPro in a satchel bag, but made the foolish choice of leaving my Lucozade (Orange flavour if that helps!) in the bag.
Obviously, the Lucozade burst, submerging around two inches of the laptop, there part where the screen connects to the laptop, and submerging the power adapter port.
Now for around twenty four hours, the power adapter charged the laptop, but unfortunatly, the backlight on the screen suddenly didn't work, as in you could very faintly see it, but when you try to turn the display up, nothing happened.
Twenty four hours after the spill, the power adapter failed. I'm pretty certain it isn't the power adapter, which means the problems seems to lie with the power adapter port.
Now I opened up the laptop two days ago, (three days after the accident), and cleaned what ever Lucozade there was, and just in general cleaned up the insides of the MacBookPro (which is now around two-and-a-half years old.) Unfortunatly it didn't work.
So currently I have a MacBookPro with no battery power, and no screen backlight. So what i'm asking is for any advice at all!
Is it worth taking it to an independant laptop repair business? Would they be able to do much more than me?
Should I take it to a Mac shop? Would they know what to do?
Is there anything I can do myself?
Anyone else had a similar experience?!
    Thanks a lot.
    Christian.

I think the problem may be with the inverter board or cable. Do you have access to an external display? Maybe one you could borrow? If so, hook it up and see if you have good video on it. If you do, that would indicate that the video chip on the logic board is OK. And if you can get good video on the external, it would be a good opportunity to run the Apple Hardware Test.
One thing is that you really need to remove all traces of the Lucozade or you could have further issues on down the line. You could practice on the I/O board you removed. Flush it thoroughly with distilled or deionized water and dry it thoroughly (this could take weeks, maybe less if you have a warm dry place for drying). You could try cleaning any affected part this way, and it's possible--though not certain--that it could work again.
You probably have found ifixit and PowerBook Medic by now. Let me give you another link:
    http://node123.cit.geneseo.edu/~stratton/ServiceManuals/
This is an index--you will have to find your specific manual and download it. But I think you'll find it useful.
    Good luck!

  • 3rd Party Power Adapter that works properly?

My original Apple power adapter has failed like many others do prematurely - the cord breaks down where it enters the block. I bought a 3rd party adapter from ebay (a Delta electronics one, in white and wearing official Apple markings) Although it is a 65w, when my 15" PB battery flattened, and went to sleep, the power adapter failed to start it up again until the battery had had chance to recharge some. So, this adapter is no good, and is going back to the seller. Does anyone know of a cheaper (Apple's own is ridiculously expensive at nearly £60) adapter that really does work with the PowerBook? By "work" I mean will it start up the machine from flat-battery-induced sleep.
Many thanks - if not, it looks like I'll have to pay for another Apple-Short-Life Charger!
    Cheers

I have used three different adaptors, other than Apple's. Unless you are lucky, I suspect you will get what you pay for. Try:
    http://www.psaparts.co.uk/ (1)
http://www.laptopshop.co.uk (2) I addition I have used Kensingtons fancy brick. Note they have adaptors for aircraft etc so make sure you get the right one.
I have just got and started using a 90W device from "(2)" I like having the spare power and that you can buy extra tips. For 90W and changeable tips (only one supplied as standard) the basic price of £45 plus VAT seems OK. They have smaller power devices.
The adaptor from "(1)" also has spare capacity and kept a Titanium (I know it needs less) alive for days. I have never had to start from a completely dead battery but the power is there with both.
The best supply I have is a Sagem powering my fax. It has been on for two years. I am reconciled to all these supplementary heating devices. My fridge does the same.

  • Power adaptor failing

In the last week or so, my power adaptor has simply stopped working at times. I've found that by disconnecting everything, then putting it back together, it will work for a short time. However, now it has stopped charging all-together. First, is there any possible solution, outside of buying a new adaptor, to fix this issue? And, if I need to replace the adaptor, is this covered under the warranty?

If you are still under warrenty, then yes it is covered.
You can work your way through these links,  start here:

  • Need new power adapter for Qosmio F50

    Hello
I am in need of buying new power adapter for my Qosmio F50 126. The reason being if I try to run more demanding application on my computer, the entire computer just crashes, shuts down. I need to buy a new adapter before my entire computers crashes result in destroying my HDD. I am not sure if my battery are died or the power adapter fails to charge them up.
The picture of underside of my power adapter is shown below.

What I would like to know if the following two adapters are the same and would work with my model. I ask this because the price difference between the two units is significant., 20 USD. Also, I will be importing it from the USA using an agent here. Therefore I need to get it right on the first try.
I'm curious about the connecter it has on the end. I wonder if its same as the one which came with the notebook. I believe it wont be an issue with it clearly says it supports my model, Qosmio F50 126
Another find which I believe is the best and most compatiable.
This one will sure work but the price is much higher than the one mentioned above

    Hi
You need an AC adaptor which supports *19V and 6.32A*
The Ampere value might be a little bit different. This should not be a big problem but you have to ensure the Ampere value isnt too low. The notebook needs enough power to run properly and to charge the battery.
However, the Volt value (19V) cannot be different. _It has to be *19V_*
The original AC adaptor has the part number: *PA3290E-3AC3*
I recommend you to purchase the AC adaptor recommended by Toshiba.

  • Could I have got a new power adapter for free?

My power adapter for my mac stopped working recently and as far as I know I didn't cause any damage to it myself.
I read the following on the apple website:
    Additional Information
Whether your product is in or out of warranty, you can take your adapter to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store for evaluation and replacement if necessary. Pending the results of evaluation, you may or may not be eligible for a replacement adapter free of charge. Signs of accidental damage would negate any coverage. Be sure to bring in the computer used with the adapter; it is required to process potential adapter replacements.
Which seems to suggest that even out of warrenty, if the charger has broken of it's own accord you can still get a free replacement?
I took my adapter and mac to the shop, they said there were no signs of accidental damage but said I still have to pay for it. I referred to this statement from the website but they were very dismissive and kept saying it was out of warrenty. Perhaps i'm reading the statement wrongly.
Just wondered if anyone could clarify :-)

As you indicated, it depends on the results of the evaluation.
Apple takes responsibility when design faults cause certain failures, especially when it represents a safety concern. There have been a small number of cases where failure met certain characteristics that Apple deemed that it should not have happened, regardless of age or use.
I am reluctant to indicated the specificity of some of these issues, because for many reasons Apple would not want us speculating on the subject. Suffice it to say your product failure may not have met any particular characteristics associated with failures deemed to have extended coverage.
If your product failed for an unknown reason, or apparently a failure stemming from age or normal life expectancy use, and it was after the normal expiry of warranty, then no further consideration was given. You need to buy and pay for a new one, unless you yourself, can provide extenuating circumstances to consider.

  • Clicking noise from power adapter

I have a G4 Titanuium and today when I plugged the power adapter into my AC outlet it was making a clicking noise. This is before I plug it into the Powerbook. When I do plug it into the Powerbook I cannot charge my battery. Does anyone know what this coud be. I think I will end up having to buy a new power adapter but I would like to know what has failed as it worked perfectly yesterday.

My PSU started clicking, it worked for a short period but very soon if was totally dead. I tried to open the thing but it was a bit of a mess when I finished and I wa no-where near spoting any short etc. Regret you just have to get a new one.
When I got my new PSU it wouldn't charge properly. It overheated (yes I know they get hot - this was overheated to the point where it cut out). I had to reset the Ti's PMU before normal operation was restored.

  • New Power Adapter Issue

Okay, this is going to be kind of long, I apologize.
So, I have a Macbook Pro that is a few years old (it's the last model to have the one button). Recently, by original power cord got frayed and stopped functioning, so I got a new one. I got the new L-shaped adapter and I started having issues. If I unplug it and plug it back in a few minutes later, it doesn't recognize that it's plugged in. But, if I shut down the computer and take out the battery and put it back in, it will start working until I unplug it again for an extended period of time. The cord works fine in my sisters computer, it's not a battery issue(got a new one after this problem), I reset the SMC, so the next thing on my list to check is the logic board. But then something occurred to me that I should have thought of earlier. What are the odds that my logic board will fail exactly the same time I bought a new power adapter? I think there is something different about the power adapter that is causing issues the SMC or something. Is this what's going on? Are there other reports of this happening? Is there going to be an SMC update to fix this?

The new adapter with the angled plug doesn't work with older (pre-unibody) MBPs. If I were you, I would return or exchange it for one of the older ones with a straight plug. If you can't exchange it where you bought it, ask for a refund, and buy a new or refurbished adapter from one of these vendors:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/A1290AR/
    http://macbookadapter.com/85wcompare.html
The first is a highly dependable Mac-centric vendor with whom many regular posters here have dealt often and happily, including myself. The second is a vendor I've never dealt with and can't vouch for. I mention them only because they advertise old-style MagSafe adapters both new and refurbished. Before ordering from either of these or any other vendor, telephone them and confirm that the older style is available and will be supplied to you if you order.
