Power adapter for macbook pro has problems...wire is breaking/tearing apart

I bought my Macbook pro between a year to a year and a half. lately i have seen the charger sort of tearing or breaking below the magnetic part and also when it starts going through to the big white power supply thing( dont know what its called!!). Also lately i have seen that sometimes my charger works but today its not working at all and ive tried vaious power points. DO u think this is a serious problem and i should see apple care or what? Also since my warranty has expired should apple cover the costs? Please help!!Thanks!!

Same problem here (after 1 1/2 year).
Take a look at the customer ratings in the Apple Online Store, there are many people with the same problem:

Maybe we should collect the issues and address this to Apple together... !

  • What's the power Adapter for Macbook pro 13inch Mid 2012

What's the power Adapter for Macbook pro 13inch Mid 2012 with core i-7, 2.9ghz, 8Gb ram?
AFAIK it should be a 60wat Megasafe power adapter.
But mine shipped with a 45Watt Megasafe. I got it as a Gift from my friend.
    Thanks in Advance.

This should be my Adapter right?
    Yes.
There is a drawback in addition to taking a longer time to charge up your MBP.  In unusual instances when using your MBP with power adapter attached, and running a very heavy load on the CPU/GPU, the MBP will require additional electrical resources in addition to what the power adapter can provide.  It will then draw upon the battery.  What this means is that using a 45 watt adapter, these conditions are more likely to occur.
Using a 45 watt adapter should not harm your MBP as such.
    Ciao.

  • Is it possible to fix the cable of the Power Adapter for MacBook Pro?

The cable of my power adaptor for my Macbook pro is broken, but the adatpor itself is fine, so I am wondering if it possible to replace that cable.

    Where's it broken?
If you have enough space between the connector and/or the case.
Here's one of mine that I repaired:
There's only 2 conductors in there. One acts as a shield.
So 3 pieces of shrink tubing. Prepare the conductors so you can proceed as follows.
    Solder the inner conductor together.
Slide one piece of shrink tubing to down to cover that splice completely - shrink.
    Solder the outer shield together.
Cover w/ the second piece of shrink tubing - shrink.
Cover the entire repair w/ shrink tubing - shrink.

Yes.  You can use one of a higher wattage, just not a lower wattage.

  • Where to get an extra power cord for Macbook Pro

I purchased an additional 85w Mag Safe power adapter for my Macbook Pro assuming it would come with both the adapter and the extension cord. However, I only received the adapter with the cable that attaches to the computer. After researching this item it seems that the extension cord is not available, either with or separate from the adapter. This cord was included with the adapter in the new computer box. Does anyone know how/where I can obtain this extension cord to use with my second adapter?

My adaptor fried itself in under six months and apple charged me $105 for the replacement. I was so disappointed that they charged me. Thought everything was warranteed.
    Amy-
I've had my MBPro for almost four months (love it. A few days ago, I thought I noticed the green light dimmer than usual. It continued to dim for 36-48 hours until it finally disappeared. No amber, either. I can use the machine on AC power, but the battery will not charge (it's at 82%, period). I tried everything first: reset SMC, reset PMU, safe mode. No luck.
Called Apple Tech Support yesterday (Sunday), explained the situation, and after very few questions the Rep said they'd ship me a replacement AC adapter & cord via FedEx Overnight (arriving Tuesday). He said a prepaid FedEx shipping label will be included so I can return the failed unit.
NOTE: I do NOT have Extended AppleCare (i.e., my 90-days of free telephone support has expired). But because this is a hardware problem, it is covered under a 1-year warranty on hardware.
Something's not right, Amy. Definitely call Apple Support (800-275-2273 in the US) - report my experience if you wish - and ask them why your case was any different than mine (it wasn't). (I wonder ... Was it an Apple Store that made the original "you have to pay" decision? Maybe someone just didn't understand all the terms of the warranty?)
    Hope this helps.
    Good luck,
    Ken

  • Airplane Adapter for MacBook Pro?

Does anyone make an airplane power adapter for the Macbook yet? I have read elsewhere, because of the magsafe adapter, that none of them will fit? Anyone know the answer to this question?

I wrote to iGo and Kensington. Neither currently make one although they "are looking into it". No ETA was given. I couldn't find one from anyone else. Posters on other threads suggest a power converter. There is a potential issue with these because of the MBP power requirements. I guess that would also be an issue for the adapters. Anyway I haven't seen any posts where someone had actually used a power converter with a MBP. I'd rather spend money on an extra battery than take a chance on a power converter not working.
I have 24 hrs of flying for a vacation in June, I hope there is a solution before I leave.

  • Power cord for MacBook Pro 8,1

Where can I get it?  And what are the specs that I need to look for?

  • Common power adapter for Macbook Air and Macbook Pro?

I have both a Macbook Air and a Macbook Pro at home, and it would be really nice to have one magsafe adapter by the couch rather than two...
I have actually tried the Air 45w adapter on my Pro and it works fine as long as the Pro is not fully discharged. If the Pro is unable to start up on battery, it's also unable to start up on the 45w AC. But otherwise it seems fine.
In the reverse direction, normally I use the 85w Pro adapter for both the Pro and the Air. That also works fine; the drawback there is that, since the Air receptacle is mounted at an angle, and the magsafe connector on the Pro adapter is straight-ahead, I have to put the Air on a pillow and even so the connector comes out frequently.
The obvious solution would be an 85W adapter with an Air-style right-angle connector. I find the angled connector is not a problem at all on the Pro.
    A few questions therefore:
    1) Am I doing any damage, in either direction, using the 45W adapter on Pro or using 85W on Air? My guess is that the adapter and the system are smart enough that it's not a problem. Put another way, I suspect the designers accounted for the possibility that idiots like me would plug one computer's adapter into a different model, and they made sure it was not harmful. But that's speculation on my part. Anyone got any real information?
    2) I have done the obvious web search and can't find an 85w with a right-angle magsafe connector. Am I missing something obvious?
    3) My next step is to snip both cords and splice an Air connector onto a Pro adapter. I'm not super handy so it will probably be kind of an ugly job. Anyone got any suggestions on the cleanest way to do this?

    Hi Ottosmo!
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    1) While it's certainly recommended to use the appropriate wattage on the charger, I too have often found myself using a MacBook Pro (85w) and MacBook (60w) with my MacBook Air. I've yet to encounter an issue in the almost 10 months I've been using my Air. The wattage on the power adapter, to my knowledge, is an indication to the amount of potential power that the charger can deliver to the unit. I know I've read various "blogs and forums" indicating that the power adapter is smart enough to 'scale' back power appropriately.
Now with that being said... should something happen, for whatever the reason, with you using the non-supplied adapter then you'd be taking matters into your own hands. (take that as my own little disclaimer)
    2) Correct, the 85w adapter does not come with the right angle adapter. The adapter on the 24" LED Cinema Display does have a right angle adapter that supports up to 85w. But I realize that's not what you asked.
    3) Regarding "modifying" the cabling. I'd strongly recommend against it, especially if you don't feel comfortable with splicing and then insulating. Too much room for chance and potential problem/failure. If someone else wants to instruct you on how to do this, that'll be their prerogative.
I ended up purchasing an iLap 13" for using my MacBook Air. It's been fantastic and I have it set off to the side just enough to allow plenty of room for a MacBook or MacBook Pro adapter. Not to mention it allows me to easily use the Air in my lap without any ventilation issues.

  • Same power adapter for Macbook and Macbook Pro?

We have a new Macbook and Macbook Pro in the house and I was wondering if the power adapters were interchangeable. I noticed in the store there are two different adapters for sale, but the ones we have appear to be the same or similar. I feel almost certain we can use them with either computer.
    Thanks for your help.

The 85 W MBP adapter can be used with both, the MB will only draw what it needs. The lower wattage MB adapter will not simultaneously power the MBP and charge its battery, but it won't do any harm.
    Hope this helps...

  • Power/AC Adapter for MacBook Pro

I have both a MacBook and a Macbook Pro computer. My Pro AC adapter is broken. Can I use my MacBook adapter on my MacBook Pro?
The MacBook is a 60W and the Pro was a 85W adapter.

Although it will work you do run a certain risk of overloading the adapter because it cannot both run the computer and charge the battery. You should get a replacement for the MBP. You can use the MB adapter while waiting for the replacement, but be sure to monitor how hot it gets. Obviously it was not designed for the MBP.

  • Wireless N adapter for MacBook Pro Core Duo

I am really wanting to upgrade my network to Wireless N. Problem being I have the core duo MacBook Pro which does not have this capability. Does any one know if apple, or anyone else, is planning on or has released an adapter (usb or express card) for wireless N that I could plug into my machine? I have seen only one solution on the internet but would rather not void my warranty and risk screwing up my computer. Thanx.

Yes, After I posted this yesterday I found a similar article. I think they just released it yesterday. Ask and you shall receive . I think I found another one, for half the price as well, by Edimax (EW-771Un) that is USB.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833315077
I think we are still on the verge of this tech becoming mainstream so there are not too many products yet. The whole "draft" n thing is annoying. I think they will have a whole new version by a different letter by the time they take the Draft off of the the designation.
Now the question is will it work with the Wireless N Airport for maximum speed to make the expense worth it?
    Thanks.

  • What is the correct part number for dvi to vga adapter for macbook pro model A1260

Can someone tell me the Apple part number for the DVI to VGA adapter that came with a Macbook Pro model A1260? (Early 2008)
My adapter has reached the end of useful life.
    Thanks!

You have a MacBook Pro 15" Early 2009 (MacBook Pro 4,1)
The Mac's port is a Dual-link DVI (VGA, Composite and S-video with adapter)
The DVI connector  connects to the Dual link-DVI port, thus you need a DVI to VGA adapter.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Micro%20Accessories/DVIVGA/
You also can search the Apple store online for the part, but it's so basic and simple that paying more for Apple's version is just for looks.

  • AC adapter for Macbook PRO

Can I use 45w AC adapter from my Mac Book Air to charge my new Macbook PRO 13?
The PRO comes with a 60w adapter.
    Thank you

Yes you can when the machine is asleep or shut down, but I wouldn't use it while the machine is running. Doing so (especially when running the MBP with a heavy load and a partially or fully discharged battery) may cause the AC adapter to heat up considerably more than it should, and might even trigger an overload-protection shutdown of the adapter. Whenever the MBP's power demand exceeds the 45W that the adapter can provide, the battery will be drawn upon for the excess and will discharge instead of charging, even though the adapter is connected. And under those particular circumstances, I don't know whether the fact that the adapter is connected would prevent the normal low-battery warning from appearing. If it does, then your battery could become completely drained and the machine could shut down without warning you, causing the loss of any unsaved work.
In short, it's a workable idea for overnight battery charging, but not a good option for the daytime. Get a proper spare adapter.
