  • Power Mac G4 Gigabit won't turn on

My power mac g4 gigabit won't turn on. When you press the power button on the front it lights up for a seccond and then it turns off and the computer doesn't turn on. If you hold the power button down the light stays on but when you release it it turns off again. only the light on the zip drive comes on sometimes. I have tried to reset the PMU but that didn't do anything I took out the battery and replaced it but it didn't help.
    PLEASE ANYBODY HELP ME!
    Thanks,
    rcrickarby

first of all, i'm an AMIGA guy. i did my share of apple ][ programming in the late 70's, but this is the first mac i've touched (literally) since 1985 when i played with the original mac. in 2000, i finally went from the amiga (i still have lots of 'em) to the Dark Side and got a PC (QUAKE II, DUDE!) running Windows NT, then Windows 2000, now XP. i finally retired that machine this year - i gave it to a neighbor for his kids.
    now back to the topic...
i'm working on a friend's G4 gigabit machine which had a bad power supply (no 28V output). as a replacement supply is obscenely expensive and they apparently die early and often, i've got an ATX supply in there (let go my ears - i are an engineer and i know what i'm doing).
i'm currently feeding +5V standby from the ATX supply (+5 always hot, even when supply is "off") to the +28V trickle pin of the motherboard power connector. i'm not worried about firewire or ADC monitors at this point.
besides the power supply hack, i'm using a PC mouse & keyboard (USB) through a belkin flip KVM.
the machine works fine now, except:
    1) if i let it put itself to sleep (power saver setting), it wakes up brain damaged. the screen is corrupt, the mouse pointer is present and moves, but it's for all intents and purposes dead and must be reset. if i put it to sleep with a quick push of the power switch (throbbing power light mode) and then wake it back up (after waiting seconds or hours), it's fine.
    2) if i disconnect the AC (even briefly), it won't power back up until i reset the PMU. i bought a new battery at radio shack today (didn't realize they wanted ****$19.00**9.00** for the thing until i saw the numbers on the register!), and i'm giving it an overnight charge with everything powered up before seeing if that fixes things. interestingly, i came home with the new battery, and of course the machine wouldn't start as i had left it unplugged. popped the old battery out, put the new one in, and it started! of course, i excitedly shut it down and unplugged the AC for 5 minutes, but it wouldn't start until i did the PMU reset
i realize that either of these problems could be related to using only +5V standby for trickle power, but keep in mind that previous G4 machines (yikes/sawtooth) also used "standard" +5V trickle power, so i'm not breaking any new ground.
what else might be going on to prevent it from starting up when freshly plugged in?
i'm looking at two solutions for the 28V thing - one is an off-the-shelf DC to DC upconverter which turns 5V to 24V (and can even provide 2A if i diode-OR +5V standby with +12V), and the other is something i'll whip up myself using an LM3478 and a big FET which can provide 1A @ 28V from 5V. either of these should be enough to run powered firewire things, but again no ADC monitor.
    system stats:
    G4 gigabit, 400MHz, 1G RAM (512M PC133, 256M PC133, 256M PC100), 4.2.8f1 firmware, OS X 10.4.11
i saw a message in one of the system startup logs about the video card firmware being "too old". is there a way to update the firmware? here's what system profiler says about it:
    ATY,Rage128Pro:
    Chipset Model: ATY,Rage128Pro
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-A
    VRAM (Total): 16 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x5046
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-72701-125
one last thing - when the machine is asleep (throbbing power light), i assume the DRAM is on and being refreshed. how much current does that require at 28V?
i'm pleasantly surprised by how quickly it boots and shuts down. the "identify your keyboard" thing was weird, but effective. the UI is a little better than 1985, but still seems a little cryptic - and that's from a guy who still uses VI to edit software.
my only other apple experience since 1985 is an iPod Shuffle, which is cool once you get hold of a certain perl script to rebuild its database. until you do that, you're saddled with iTunes. i've only used (or tried to) the Windows version. i don't think i've ever used any software on any platform that was so LARGE, so SLOW, so INTRUSIVE to the rest of the system, and so COMPLETELY OPAQUE before (well, maybe ClearCase). dear apple - don't do THAT again.

  • DVR 8888 message after power outage. TV won't turn on.

Moved to the Xfinity TV and Equipment forum.

If the TV won't turn on that's a TV issue, all we can say is check the power cord, otherwise you may need a new TV. However if the box isn't progressing past the 8888 either, then the box may need replaced.

  • 2011 late Mac book pro spark/won't turn on.

So i was plugging in my MBP late 2011 to my theatre projector system and while i was plugging the usb/fire port in to connect video there was a quick medium size spark and everything shot off.
The charger doesn't show the green light any more and i used a new one to make sure it wasn't the charger, still nothing.I unplugged the battery and held the power button down for 10 seconds and then plugged the power cord on and still no green light and no power to the MBP.I have no idea what it could be and why it won't turn on with or without battery.I hope its not the logic board. Can someone please help,i just added the new SSD in it and hope it can be fixed easily.

    Hi Rockwellwell,

  • HP 655 won't turn on, power light on and won't turn off.

My HP 655 laptop has apparently gone into sleep mode, permanently. It was up, went into sleep mode and now it will not come back up. I have removed the battery and unplugged the power source for an hour. As soon as I plug in the power or battery, the power button lights up but the laptop will not turn on, no matter how long I hold the power button down. I even plugged in the HDMI cord to make sure that it wasn't the screen, obviously,  which it wasn't.

    Hello  ,
To get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial product. You can do this at Commercial Forums.
Even though this is a Commercial product, try performing a hard reset. Lots of information in this document that could help. When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices.
Here is a link to computer won't start for Windows 7. Windows 8 here.
Here is a Youtube video that might help. It shows you how to reseat the HDD, which sometimes helps.
    Thanks.

  • IPhone 5 shut down and won't turn back on

My phones screen turned a blue/greenish color and shut down and will not turn back on :(

I'm having the same issue with my iPhone5.  It just started yesterday afternoon.  The "hard reset" as you suggested worked once.  However, it shut down again only one hour later.  It didn't turn on (even with the hard reset) for three hours when the hard reset worked again.  I hooked it up to iTunes and restored my phone and thought that it would fix the issue.  But after being on for about two hours, my screen got vertical lines then turned green and shut off again.  I haven't been able to turn it back on no matter what I do all night and all day today.
It doesn't matter that the phone is plugged in or have 100% battery power.  It just won't turn on again.
I have an appointment at my local Apple Genuis Bar, but I'm not sure what they can do as I'm not sure if this is a software or a hardware issue.

you should definitely get a decent UPS to protect your investment.
something like the APC Back-UPS ES 700 should suffice.

Tanks dominic23, do you think that the dead battery can affect the macbook performance? I do alot of video work, and since the battery died i cannot do a smooth preview of my videos in premiere cs6, seems like a memory problem but it worked fine before the battery issue.

Three beeps at startup almost always indicate bad RAM. You probably need to get your RAM replaced. Bring it in to Apple for a definitive diagnosis if you are unable to run the Apple HardwareTest

  • Power book G4 won't turn on

So last night I went to plug my charger in and it made a real weird noise then now it won't turn on. Iv had problems with the battery so I'm not sure how to tell if it's the battery that's died or my computer. When I press that button at the back of my computer one green light appears. Thanks

It sounds like your power adaptor may not be working properly, especially since the indicator light doesn't come on. Try the PMU reset that Carolyn linked and see if this makes a difference. Also have a look at this article on troubleshooting power adaptors:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1725
It sounds like the battery is fully discharged and not working, but it may be that way because your charger is faulty.
It would be very helpful if you could try a known good battery that is charged, or a known good power adaptor. Do you have access to a friend with the same PowerBook or an Apple Store? If so, see if you can try one or the other or both and see if that cures the problem.
Your Mac should run from a good power adaptor, and it should run from a good battery.  If it still won't boot up, the problem would be with the Mac, and possibly with the board that contains the power port. If it does boot up, then you know that you need a new charger and possibly a new battery.
    Good luck!

My Mac book pro won't turn on at all and when i put it to charge the light blinks, what should I do?

Yes if your model MBP has a removable battery.  If it does not:
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Mac book pro won't turn on and battery is fully charged..

My Mac book won't turn on... The battery is fully charged, we have it hooked up to power... We've tried holding power button down and disconnecting from power but nothin have worked! It makes a noise like its going to turn on and little white light flashes but nothing happens

Try a safe boot, see if it starts, this takes a bit longer.  Push power button while holding shift key, continue to hold key till you see the progress bar. If it boots, shut down and try to boot in the normal way.  Best
