Power Book vs. Mac Book Pro for Computer Science Student

I am a Computer Science Masters student that is looking into switching completely off of Windows machines in my home in the next 2 to 4 years. I’ve never used Macs before, but I’m tired of feeling like my hands are tied with Windows and I’ve been impressed with the G4 Power Books some of my peers have. I’ve actually been so impressed that I decided I want to start my switch from Windows to Mac with the purchase of a new Mac powered laptop for school.
I plan on using this laptop for the following tasks: writing papers, writing/compiling/debugging programs including an independent study project on OpenGL Computer Graphics, photo editing and some webpage design. Also some game playing and movie watching when I’m traveling.
So my question is this, do you think a 12" Power Book or a Mac Book Pro would serve me better? I am on a budget so if I get the MBP I wouldn’t have a lot of money left over after buying it for additional software, but if I purchase a PB I’m afraid it won’t be "up to snuff" or that the Power PC chip will stop being supported by future software. Are these fears unfounded? I do know there is a student discount and I’ve already taken that into account in regards to pricing.
Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide me.

I'm not a compsci student, but I think I can give you some insight on what to expect...
The G4 will handle a lot of what you throw at it, depending on how much RAM and how many things. I'm still running the stock 512MB and have found little-to-no need to upgrade at this time. I even went so far as to try a 1GB PC2700 SODIMM from my HP ZV6000 and it didn't change anything, so I'm good for now. Over the years, I've been impressed w/ the performance and efficiency with the G4 design and architecture, so I doubt there will be anything that it can't do based on what you're describing.
Gaming may be another story, although with the latest rev. of the 12" PB, I am impressed and mildly surprised at the performance w/ gaming. I play Call of Duty and Doom 3 on occasion and both run great. Just remember to put your processor performance on "Highest" as to turn off the processor throttling (much like Cool 'n' Quiet on AMD architecture). I played Doom 3 last night w/ medium quality @ 1024x768 and it ran quite well... Call of Duty will fly even on battery (ie. reduced processor speed) or AC... I've yet to try Call of Duty 2 but I hear it's going to be a monster w/ system requirements.
Writing Papers -- You can do this with anything...but if you're referring to the comfortable aspect, I think you'll love the keyboard personally. Typing on my big HP and on my 12" PB, it's night/day. The HP has a good keyboard, but it's not something I can 'fly' on...and by fly I mean 80-90WPM w/ little to no mistakes. I notice I make fewer mistakes on the PB keyboard because the keys seem to be 'grouped' together better and it's got a nice feel when you're slamming the keys down while you're in thought on a particular subject.
I also use Office X (or 10)...have had no need to upgrade since it works very well for what I do. I've never used Appleworks...
Future Software? -- Two words -- Universal Binaries...they will be around for many moons to come, and then some. Apple supported 68k for almost 11yrs (if I'm not mistaken) and software developers have already committed to Universal Binaries (aka. UB, or Fat Binaries) because of the sheer install base of PowerPC. The Intel transition will probably be in the 'teething' stage for another 2yrs before it's the standard Apple base across the board, and by then it will still only be a percentage of the PPC install base. Rest assured--your PPC Mac will be working long after you even upgrade (4-6yrs down the line).
The only thing I recommend is AppleCare, and not because I get anything from Apple over it. I've used it on my Rev. B (1.0Ghz) 12" PB and it paid for itself in the last year I had it. It covers everything that isn't accidental, so if you have issues w/ the LCD or Logic Board (aka. MLB), it'll pay for everything and shipping (both ways). It's also worldwide, so if you're on a trip to the UK and have problems w/ it, you can stop by any one of a handful of Apple Stores (Regent Street is awesome, I'm told) and they can fix it for you. There's also hundreds (if not thousands) of Apple Authorized Service Providers worldwide, and from what I'm told, they prefer Apple over many manufacturers because they are 'no hassle' when it comes to warranty claims. In other words, AppleCare may be the only investment that you may never use, but if you do, it'll pay for itself.
Computer Graphics, well, I don't do graphics but I can say that almost everything Adobe makes runs and runs well on Mac hardware.. I think you'll love the Quartz engine too...it's really quick compared to Direct X (I notice this in gaming, but what do I know...).
Good luck to you in whatever you decide...

  • IMac + iPad 2 or MacBook Pro for computer science students

    Hi there,
I would be joining college this September and as usual I am looking for a new computer. I would be majoring in Computer Science and hence would be doing a lot of programming and that kind of stuff. I don't like taking a computer to my classes (it's very distracting) and will take my notes using pen and paper. I've narrowed down my options as :
MacBook Pro 15" 2.2 GHz, or
    iMac 21.5 inch 2.7Ghz + iPad 2 32GB Wifi+3G
    iMac 21.5 inch 2.5 Ghz + MacBook Air 11" 64 GB (new July 2011)
I've worked out my budget and the three option cost almost same. Now my questions :
Is 11" too less for comfortable working ? And does the 11" MBA gives a good performance as far as web browsing and programming is concerned ?
This would be my first experience of college so I don't know what sort of portable computing I could need. If someone can tell me about this, it would make life a lot easier for me.
I would love to hear your thoughts.
    Thanks

Talk to the Computer Science Department at your school. They may have computer requirements. They will likely also have educational discounts on hardware and software. Some of your programs may be provided free by the school. So get the school's advice on what you will need for the Computer Science College.
"I would be majoring in Computer Science and hence would be doing a lot of programming and that kind of stuff." does not tell us much. There are many programming languages and just as many IDEs. You need to pick a computer that supports these. You also will be taking other classes besides programming. You need to ensure your computer meets the requirements of these classes as well.

  • Macbook air vs. pro for uni science student

my macbook is 5years old and its time for a new computer. i was planning on getting another macbook since its worked so well and ive never had any problems with it, but upon realizing they are discontinuing the macbook i decided otherwise.
im a 3rd year earth science student, so i spend time writing up labs and essays in microsoft word and using excel from time to time, but i also use my computer a lot for music and photos - sometimes some other programs i have to download for courses i take at school. really trying to figure out which computer would be better for me and i really have no idea. ive already got an 750gb external hard drive where ive got everything stored from my old mac, and i plan to put some pictures on cds onto the drive with my old computer. after that i suppose i wouldnt have a use for a cd drive, but im debating on whether the air is really a good idea or not.
im still old fashioned and prefer writing my notes in lectures than using powerpoint. so if the air is a bit slower i dont think that would bother me.
biggest thing is the whole cd drive, all opinions for my situation would be appreciated. thanks!

I just sold my Macbook Pro 13" i5 processor, 8GB RAM for the new 13" MBA i5 4GBRam.  It is such a huge difference in size and wait that I would never go back to something so bulky(I know MBP isn't really bulky, but things have changed). It is plenty fast for everything I do...heavy duty web surfing, email, writing papers, hd video, music, etc. and I find that I still have yet to fill up the 128GB SSD it came with...I'm at about 60GB...it is truly the best computer you'll ever own.

  • How Much Power Is My Mac Book Pro Using?

How much much power is my mac book pro using when it is closed and the power chord is plugged in? This is bugging the crap out of me because my dad keep making me unplug once im done. He claims its costing 7 bucks a month. I think that is bogus (remember this is when the laptop is closed). anyone have any answers?

I guess you could look at the info printed on your power adapter. Normally you'll see the output voltage and current values. Multiplying the two together will give you the power consumption of the computer (in watts) while it's plugged in. For example my Macbook says "16.5V and 3.65A" so it's about 60 Watts. For a MB Pro, my bet is around 80w. Looks like your dad did do his math to come up with that 7 bucks a month,:), but the pre-assumption is that you had it on 24/7, which i doubt. If you dad bought this MBP for you, you might wanna ask him why would he care the mere $7 after spending about $2000 on the thing.:)

  • Mac Book or Mac Book Pro

I hope I am posting this in the correct spot. I am new to this discussion group and searched in hopes of an answer to this question, but couldn't find it anywhere.
Wondering if I should buy a Mac Book, Mac Book Pro or some sort of Windows based laptop. Leaning towards the Mac but only because I have an iMac G5 (two years old or so) and it seems to work ok....though it doesn't work with 2 out of three external devises I have....Sony DVD camcorder and a Sony Mini Disc recorder. But I guess that is Sony's fault.
So, what will I use it for? Not that much. Surfing the web at home from a quite room and on the road, emailing, iPhoto, iTunes, watching DVDs when my kids are using the TV, importing recordings I make on my mini disc and burning them onto CDs. (I am a professional musician and use these for rehearsal...the ones we sell are professionally produced.) I also do a lot of writing using MS word. I get lots of large PDF files (CD cover proofs, posters, etc.) I feel totally overwhelmed by my current iMac. The last Mac I owned was the Apple 2C. And I am only 32 years old, but for some reason I just got used to the awkwardness of my old Dell....that was, until it froze up over and over again, got sick all the time, etc. So...maybe there are two questions here. Which laptop (I have the money for the "pro" and like things to work fast, but am probably too much of a computer idiot to notice...so don't want to wast money)...and my second question...how do I learn to use my Mac? I went through the mac 101 course, but I find my mac to be very NOT intuitive and a little unclear. For instance, when I use "help" I absolutely NEVER find what I am looking for. I find the tutorials either way to complex or way too boring. In all fairness, I kind of just want things to work and not put that much effort into it, so I am sure it is all my fault and am prepared to be torn to shreds. But in the mean time, if you have on opinion about which laptop to get, I'd appreciate it. Oh, and if you could solve all of my other problems, that would be great too.
    Thanks,
    Adam

i think you answered your own question. you don't have any real hardcore requirements for getting the pro...you are doing fairly basic tasks...the MacBook is designed more for your needs. as for getting a Windows laptop, well, i can't really recommend that, but if you feel most comfortable with that OS then it really is simply a personal preference.

  • Choosing between Mac Book and Mac Book Pro??

    Hi,
I need a laptop for school and to do a bit of Photoshop and HTML but i don't no wich Macbook should i choose. Here is why im confuse :
I saw this add of a Mac Book Pro 2.53 (320g 7500rpm-4gig RAM) with apple care for 2500$ new and sealed but im not sure if its what i needed.
On the other hand i tough of buying a bran new MacBook 2.4 (1749 cnd$) and upgrade the RAM to 4 gig wich will cost me 150$ + the apple care.
My question is wich one is better and would you trusted the buy a NEW used Mac Book Pro. The guy said that he has all the receipt and he's selling it because he want to buy a MacPro. Apple give im a new labtop because is older one has to many repair to do.
Awaiting for your comment/suggestion on what you would do.
    Tks

Well, I can only offer my advice as to what I would do. Everyone is different, but here it goes.
If you're not doing anything super intensive (HTML/Photoshop plus your usual web-browsing isn't too intensive) you'll have more than enough computer with the 2.4 MB (even without the RAM upgrade! But it can't hurt to do the upgrade if you're wiling to spend the money).
Personally I wouldn't want to take over someones laptop. Let me ask a few questions about the computer listed and some exchange rates.
2.53 MBP, is that the previous model, or the UniBody. And that $2500 is in Canadian I assume (because the new 2.66 UniBody is $2499 US). If it's the previous model it doesn't even appear to be much of a discount for being used.
My feelings are that the person is getting rid of the laptop for a reason. If they were 100% happy with the product, they wouldn't be looking to upgrade to a new computer.
I'd go with the 2.4 MB if I were you. I'm very happy with mine. It'll be enough computer for at least the next 4 years (if taken care of).
    Hope that helps. Cheers.

  • Syn of contacts between i phone 5 and address book on mac book pro along with contacts in microsoft outlook 2011

    Hi
i am using i phone 5 and want to sycn my contacts with address book on my mac book pro and parallely with contacts on mico soft outlook for mac 2011...please suggest way forward...

    You're welcome.
I read your original post incorrectly. I thought it was Outlook on a PC in addition to your Mac, so what I provided does not apply.
You can sync contacts between your Apple Address Book and the Outlook address book via sync services with Outlook.

  • Can mac books and mac book pros share the same accesories?

I am getting a mac book but I have a friend with some accesories like a keyboard cover and a hard cover for her mac book pro that she is getting rid of. Does any one know if it would still fit? She has a 13'' mac book pro.The only reason why I am asking is because I wont have my mac book for another 2 months.

The difficulty with these particular accessories is that it's difficult to judge whether the sizes are exactly the same, or at least close enough to work. There's no guarantee and I don't think there's any easy way to tell.
In your situation I would buy the accessories from your friend, then when you get your MacBook see if they fit. If they DON'T fit then put them on eBay and get your money back for them.
Or maybe ask your friend if she will hold off selling them until you get your MacBook and can try them.

  • Power iPad from Mac Book Air USB or iPhone charger?

I don't have my iPad charging adapter, but I do have the cord.
Should I plug into the USB port on my laptop or the adapter that I got with my iPhone?
I realize the iPhone adapter block only puts out about 2W.   Is there more or less power if I plug into my Mac Book's USB?

I would use your MacBook USB port. My MBP from late 2011 does a nice job of charging my iPad 3.

  • What is the necessity of the AC power cord (with Mac Book Air)? When should it be used with the power adapter?

what is the necessity of the AC power cord (with the Mac book Air)? when should it be used?

Gary, you wouldn't believe some of the questions people ask on this site.
    Why are both cords necessary?
    They are not.
Other than the two reasons dominic23 sited are there any other reasons to use the AC power cord rather than the power adapter cord alone?
    No.

  • How can I sync my Iphone to a new iTunes account on a new Mac Book as no longer have the old Mac Book and im unable to use the same Apple ID, I want to sync music to my Iphone from my new Mac Book, new Mac Book and iphone in same Apple ID???

Basically, my iphone has been in the same apple ID as my dads iphone and mac book, so my iphone has always been synced to his macbook. I bought myself a mac book the other day and want to sync my iphone to it. However i have obviously put my mac book in a different apple id as i know pay for things i download myself, how can I sync my iphone to my mac book without losing all the music and pictures on it?  ive now put my iphone into my new apple id thinking this might help? ive also tried clicking 'manually manage music and video' but this doesnt seem to work, it basically says you have to erase your iphone to sync to a new itunes!
    HELPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

" how can I sync my iphone to my mac book without losing all the music and pictures on it?"
You cannot.  Copy everything you want form the old computer to the new one, then sync it.
it basically says you have to erase your iphone to sync to a new itunes!
Correct Iphone will sync, or manually manage, with one and only one computer/library at a time. Syncing, or manually managing, to another will indeed erase the current content.
