Power button connector torn off the logic board

During what seemed to be a routine repair I tore the power button cable connector off the logic board. Is there anything that I can do now that does not involve installing a new logic board?

Hey iBookfragger and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
Here's a pic of a 12" 1.33 board I have here in my repair pile:
http://tinyurl.com/7s4epq
verify with a continuity meter that these points are connected on yours.
I then solder two tiny stranded wires to the SMT devices at the points indicated and lead those wires to the ripped socket contacts.
It's a lot easier and requires a much less steady hand than Duane possesses.
In addition some of these sockets leads didn't stick out as much as these for the 1.33 and are pretty much completely hidden under the socket itself.
These sockets were fragile. These were held physically to the board with the two solder attachment pads near the back. Others were epoxied to the logic board and the tabs were soldered to the traces.
I recommend not removing that plug when swapping out the hard drive. It's been ripped off the board too many times around here. Me included!

  • Does anyone know what the second button is for on the logic board of an iMac G5 (PPC), 1st generation ?

One button on the logic board of a 1st generation iMac G5 (PPC) is an alternate power button. Does anyone know what the purpose of the other button is?

I am far from certain but I believe it is the power management unit (PMU) reset switch a/k/a Cuda switch: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1939
Do not press it when the computer is on.

    JH,
    I don't have a 900 G3 iBook here (BTW 14 or 12"?)
What I do have is an 800 MHz G3 12" and the picture of the power socket is here:
    http://tinyurl.com/b345hq
My trace out of the two points is here:
    http://tinyurl.com/dhc2sq
Now I take NO responsibility for the accuracy of these two trace outs.
    I have an 800 12" board and yours is a 900 ?" board.
This will give you an idea of how to do it.
Here's a long discussion detailing some of my methods to effect this repair.
    http://tinyurl.com/d799xs
Note that my methods have evolved during this post. Toward the end I recommend the the use of "grain of wheat" wire. I like this a lot better, it's smaller and easier to handle than CAT 5 wire. It's also one wire. Not all grain of wheat wire will be like this.
So the other end of those two wires are attached to the original power contacts of the torn off socket and the normal plug is plugged into that. Proper insulation practice should be used. I use shrink tubing.

  • I have recently replaced my iphone 4s front screen and made an error with the logic board. Is this fixable? picture will be linked

If something has broken off the logic board, you'll need to get a new logic board.

  • Way to prolong life on the Logic board?

I have an ibook, and so far, I've had my logic board replaced twice. Happily, it is still under logic replacement board warrenty, but with year three steadily appoarching, I am wondering-Is there a way to prolong the life on the logic board? Would dumping programs help? Only keeping it on a couple hours a day? Buring sage? Chanting prayers? Help!

Hi, Dianna. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The only thing I know that can keep the logic board bogeyman at bay is to refrain from picking it up by the front left corner. If you are picking it up in just your left hand, pick it up in the center under the trackpad. The theory is that picking it up by the left front corner can cause enough flex in the case to pop the graphic chip off the logic board, causing the problem with which we are all too familiar. Since reading this, I've tried to remember not to pick mine up by the left front corner.
Deleting programs won't help, nor will limiting your usage. Sage, incense, and chants optional, but not required. 8^)

Are the lines like psychedelic herringbone?  If yes, I had that happen once, it was something serious, like the
Logic board. The good news is that it was fixed without any loss of data on the hard drive. Take it in to have Apple look at it ASAP.  I took it to TekServe at the time, they are very nice about preserving your data and user library when possible.
    Good luck and don't panic.

  • I replaced the logic board and power supply in my iMac and it's still dead.

Recently lighting hit my friend's house and his iMac was plugged into an outlet. It did frie the power supply. I replaced it and the logic board. The first two LEDS on the logic board light up green so I know it's getting power. However it still wont boot. A white light flashes in the bottom right corner and the fan kicks on and then off. I've tried reseting the PRAM and SMC and now it wont do anything at all?

The strike could have written everything off in the computer or if the part still works it still could be damaged and cause hard to identify problems or fail within a short time.
rkaufmans advice holds true, either take in it for service or probably write it off on the insurance. It is quite likely it is beyond economic repair.
If the strike was close by, sometimes not too much gets damaged but a direct strike, the ones I have seen have wrote the machines off.
Also do you know the provinence of the replacement parts, have you seen them working and know they are good and a direct replacement?

    Hi fremley,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This article may be helpful with determining why your Mac Pro doesn't stay in sleep mode:
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:
Hard drive access (even if you're not using the computer, a running application might be accessing your drive, such as when downloading a large file or listening to music in iTunes)
Moving the mouse or using a portable Mac's trackpad, pressing a mouse button, or pressing a key on the keyboard
Some System Preferences settings (see below)
    Open applications (see below)
    Input devices (see below)

  • HT201401 My iphone5 will not completely power off. I pressthe power button on top of the phone, the slider bar appears which I slide to turn off. It turns off but then will come right back on. Any one know what the prob might be and how to fix it?

Does anyone have a solution to the iphone5 powering off completely but then turning right back on?

To get rid of "pop-up ads and other crap on my computer when I am on the internet", click on Safari in the Menu bar, and select Preferences. Next select Extensions. Delete all of them. Restart Safari.
The first step in addressing the black screen is an SMC reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

    Turn it off.
Start it up again and (at the sound of the chime) press and hold the command and the R keys, hold them down until Recovery loads. When it does you will select Disk Utility and you should be on the First Aid tab when it opens, if you are not please select it. Then select the partition (in the side bar, 2nd entry on the list, see picture).
Yours is probably called Macintosh HD.
Once you have selected it go to the lower righthand corner of the First Aid dialog and press Repair Disk.
This will take 10 minutes approximately. Post back when it is finished and tell me what it says.

  • Do you think this is the logic board?

Ok, So I'm sitting in psychology and the computer freezes and the video becomes distorted (like the Photoshop wind filter) little lines going everywhere. I then held the power button and it shut down. Then I tried to boot it, but nothing.
Later it works OK, but do you think this is the logic board?
    Will it get worse?
And finally, Do you think I am eligible for a logic board replacement?
    Serial: UV3283xxxxx

Gah, Sorry forgot to mention in the message i have an ibook.
You didn't need to say that you have an iBook because it says it in your system configuration at the bottom of the screen I just thought that I'd mention my experience because it was a bit similar to yours.
I definately think that it is worth getting it checked out. Maybe just drop it off at an Apple store and ask them to do some tests on it to see if the logic board does have a problem. If you are eligable for the logic board replacement then it's definately worth looking into. Often, intermittent problems like this can turn into more serious ones like mine.
I personally would not leave it down to chance.
    Good luck

  • I replaced the logic board- now nothing...

This is really a continuation of this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2542941&tstart=0
It is now the end of September and I have been unable to use my Power Mac since early August/Late July.
to recap: I replaced my logic board, but then the machine wouldn't turn on. The power button wouldn't stay illuminated and the screen remained blank but I could hear the whirring of fans and maybe drives.
I brought the tower to the Genius bar where they opened it up and promptly told me my CPU was fried.
Fortunately it was still under warrantee And OWC said send it on back and we'll see what we can do.
Turns out the Newer Technologies 2.0 ghz CPU has been discontinued. The folks at OWC were trying to find out if they could get it rebuilt or just what they could offer me to honor the warrntee on a dicontinued item.
So we agreed to a dual 1.6 CPU that I received in the mail Tuesday and installed last night.
Unfortunately the same thing happened. I hear it try to start but there's no chime and the on/off button only remains illuminated as long as I hold it in.
Could it be a bad logic board?
because the CPU is an aftermarket product, it comes with firmware to be installed. When I replaced the logic board, did it maybe not recognize the CPU? (I'm grabbing at straws here.)
I will probably bring it in to the Genius bar again and have them look at it, but I just thought I would try here first in case anyone might recognize the symptoms.
    thanks.

the heatsink came out first, and then the card with the processor.
The processor chip and card are one assembly called a daughter card.
I just don't know how to go about re-installing it. Is there a temporary fix short of solder?
    It's not solder.
The OEM CPU and heat sink have thermal tape that is hard to break when cold.
When hot, the heat sink is easily removed.
Simply reinstall the CPU daughter card, put a bit of thermal compound on the old tape, and fasten the heat sink.
This will work well enough to run the firmware patch.
For more thorough instruction, I wrote it up here:
    http://www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/Blog/9AE7FE0E-0CF2-4A7C-8003-489B282 582BC.html
I couldn't locate a voltmeter that would work at this level.
Any electronics store will have a volt ohm meter; Radioshack, Fry's, etc.
    They are inexpensive.

  • I've got a mac pro problem with the starting up, but also a red light on the logic board solidly on. Its not among the diagnostic led. It's located near the BT adapter and the front fans. Also the fans run loud also. any solutions?

    Hi
I've got a mac pro late 2006, and i am having problem with it for quite a while now. the problem i am facing is the start up process, and the red light on the logic board. Earlier I've got the two led on the diagnostic leds 5 and 6 turned on without the diagnostic button being pressed, and i think those are related to the processors overtemp. I've managed to solve that by, removing the processors and re applying the thermal compound on the heatsink. what i have left now with is the red light on  the logic board at the time i plugged in the power. At the same time when this light come on, the power indicator at the front panel come on as well. i am not sure what is this light relates to. We've replace the power supply too, and gone through the SMC reset but seems no help.
Any idea on the problem? I am desperate about it, and i will be greatful if anyone can help..
thanks and hope for your best solutions
    Kari
