  • G5 dual 2.0 dead? Power light flashed three times...

G5 dual 2.0 powers up, but won't boot. I'm aware the power light blinking three times every few seconds indicates faulty RAM, but I removed all sticks and tried them out a pair at a time to weed something out. No luck. I also put in a new battery and reset the PMU (or SMU, whatever it's called - the button on the logic board.).
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I've just had my computer have the same problem with a faulty logic board being the problem. The local Apple tech said we had to get a service number from Apple to get it fixed. The Apple person (in the Philippines) gave us a number and said go back to our local Apple tech to have him access a repair extension program for the repairs. Are we being given the run-around because the local guy says he doesn't know about this program????

  • Laptop won't turn on - the power adapter light flashes three times? G62 b29SA

I've been replacing the fan in my friend's laptop. I had a problem with the trackpad not working after I put it back together and that problem is not yet resolved but I have another problem preventing me from getting further. Now when I press the on button, the power adapter light (next to the socket for the external power) flashes three times and that's all. It flashes again three times every time I press the power button. It does this even with an external power source plugged in (I'm pretty sure that it's supposed to just stay on constantly when the charger is plugged in but the power source I have is a universal one set to 19 V - it has powered up with this plugged in before but I don't know whether it was taking charge from it). Any advice?
    This question was solved.

I got the charger from my friend and now it boots up just fine. There seem to be many meanings to the three flashes based on my Internet searches but in this case it appears that it's some way of indicating a low battery.

  • Long Tone, Power Button Flashes, No Boot

I woke up this morning and my G4 had blurred grey screen with black lines.. looked like nothing really, except the computer was frozen. I restarted and was greeted with a long tone and the power button flashing rapidly for several seconds then going off. I can hear the power supply is ON and the fan is blowing. The little red lights on the motherboard are on, but none of the drives (dvd/harddrive) are running. Nothing appears on the monitors, its dead. I haven't changed anything (software/hardware/settings) for months... I tried hitting the button next to the battery inside (as described in another similiar posting), and I even replaced the battery, no change.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Thanks again for the tips... I have always kept everything (external devices) removed from the start of the problem... there's no chime... I have reset the ram & video card. That did resolve the loud tone and flashing power button, but nothing else. no, the hard drives don't fire up... the video card fan spins...
I've reset the PMU, removed the battery (i even replaced it with a new one)... I've been through the tutorial pages.. all of the standard stuff.. no change in the machine though.

    Hi
6 years is a decent life for a laptop & I assume its a very good laptop you have, otherwise it may not come through all these years,
Ok, I'll try helping you here to revive him,
I assume your laptop came with Windows Vista
What happens when you remove the battery & connect it directly to AC adapter, is it powering on?
Whats the age of battery - 6 years? - may be its  stopped working. Try another compatible battery if you've one, if it works a replacement of battery is warranted.
Try doing a hard reset first
    Is it coming back?
Still nothing is coming - then,
Troubleshoot by following the HP documents given below promptly:
HP Notebook PCs - Computer Does not Start (Windows 7, Vista, XP)
If you're able to boot after doing hard reset, troubleshoot by following this:

If nothing is coming after all these, & you want it back you may give a visit to local technician to sort out the issue,
    Or Contact HP.

  • I sometimes need to push the power button to 4 times before my laptop powers on?

I need to press the power button 3 - 4 times before my laptop powers on.  Is the fix the same as not being able to power on at all or is there and actual hardware porblem?

    Hi there @TASK1

I understand that you are having to press the power switch multiple times before your notebook powers on. I am happy to help.
Has this always been the case, or did it just start to happen recently?
Is there any sign of physical damage, or does the switch seem to stick?

    - Try on another computer

  • Power button flashes on 22" Cinema Display with PowerMac G5

I just bought a G5 and and ADC to DVI adaptor. I'm connecting to a 22" Cinema Display. Everything works fine on the display, except the power button flashes. I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this issue.

The power button flashing indicates some type of hardware problem with the display. You should call AppleCare or check the documentation to determine the exact problem by the number of blinks and pauses. Even though it is working now, there might be a problem that will soon manifest itself.

  • T510 boot issues - power button flashes

I have a T510 that is acting really strange.
The laptop will do the following once shut down for any extended period of time.
When I open it up and press the power button the power button, keyboard light , hdd light will all flash. 5 seconds or so will pass and then it will do the same thing, never actually booting up. I'll pull the power and batteries and repeat the process and the thing will do the same thing. Eventually it will boot if I repeat the steps enough.
This just started happening recently. It will run fine once the system actually turns on. I have updated all drivers, I have updated the BIOS and all other software. I am highly doubting this is a windows issue as it never even POSTs.
The flashing lights almost act like an error code but I couldn't find anything regarding 1 quick slow flash by the power button.
    Any suggestions?

Maybe the keyboard cable or the keyboard itself? Nothing shows on screen during a false start?

  • My Power Mac G4 booted from an OS 9.1 install CD, and then froze up.  Now I turn the machine on, beeps 3 times, power button blinks 3 times.  What does this mean?

I tried to install Mac OS 9.1.  I turned the computer on, heard the bong noise (although with some static), and inserted the OS 9.1 installation CD.  It started to boot, but froze up.  I rebooted the machine, and the same thing happened.  One more reboot, and i get 3 beeps and the power button is blinking.  What does this mean?

Hi, it indicates a RAM problem, (or Logic Board around the RAM).
The power on self-test resides in the ROM of the computer. This test runs whenever the computer is turned on after being fully shut down (the power-on self-test does not run if the computer is only restarted).
If a fault is detected during the test, you will not hear a normal startup chime. Instead, the system will beep as explained below. If you experience one of these beeps, you may call your Apple Authorized Service Provider for additional troubleshooting assistance.
1 beep  = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • Mbook needs power button pressed multiple times to start up when on battery

    Hey all,
Not sure if anyone's had this particular problem, but here goes:
When on battery power, my Macbook does not power up properly--I have to press the power button 5,7, probably close to 10x sometimes before it goes on. Each time I press the button I can hear it begin to start up but then it shuts down.
Anyone had a similar problem? Or care to speculate on a possible reason/way to fix it? Figured I'd ask before I take a trip to the Apple store.
    Thanks!!

Check to see how many battery cycles you have on the battery in System Profiler. Apple-About this Mac-More Info...-Power. Let us know the number of cycles, condition, and maximum mAh.
It couldn't hurt to try a SMC reset by turning off the machine, unplugging the magsafe, taking out the battery, and holding down the power button for 5 seconds.
Next, reset the PRAM by putting everything back in, pressing the power button to turn it on, and holding down command-option-p-r until it chimes twice.
Last, calibrate the battery (if you can get it working). Charge fully and let it sit charged for two hours. Then unplug the power and let it run down fully until it goes to sleep on its own and let it sit discharged for five hours. Last, charge it fully. Do this every 2-3 months to keep the battery working well otherwise keep it charging when possible. The goal is 2-3 cycles per week.

  • Power button flashes once and wont turn on.

When I press the power button on the computer the power button light flashes once and won't turn on when I plug the a.c. adapter in it shows that it's charging and plugged in, but anytime I press the power button it flashes once but will never turn on! :/ I tried unplugging the adapter hold the power button for 30 seconds and connecting the adapter back to the computer but it does the same thing.. Any advice would be AMAZING! Thanks !

Remove everyhting from your pc. INCLUDING KEYBOARD. and try again. On 2 different occassions the keyboard was to blame. Some spill on keyboard caused motherboard not to power up.
Remove KB, Ram, Hdd, DISPLAY (Lcd cable might be shorting as well) etc.etc. Leave motherboard alone but   power sithc connected. Even if you disconnect the fan cable it would help. If you see anything on your screen after you removed fan too then turn it off immediately and connect the fan back and try again then add up other components one by one. If none works then i am sorry the board you have is faulty.
or it may need a bios recovery.

  • X220 - no post and green light around power button flashes every 3 - 4 second

We bought around 40 of these X220 I5 before xmas and now more than 20 of them have failed. The company we bought them from tried everything but they ended up switching the mainboard on the first two that failed.
We were told it was a batch issue with the serial number R9-HNXXX and now all of those are changed into T420. But today we had the same problem with serial number R9-HXXXX that was bought two weeks earlier and with different config - I7 and SSD. All of them with the same problem that is described in subject. Are there any known batch issues?
The problem is not with the tablet version and sorry for posting in the wrong forum.
    Thx

    All,
Thanks - interesting experiences.   Could you each send me a private message with any additional details including the model type and serial number of the units?  We can look into this.
Also, as the discussion continues, please include more details about what BIOS version you are running, any updates that were recently applied, etc.   Please also describe the symptoms - does everyone have the blinking power indicator?
If you reset by pulling the battery & AC and pressing and holding power button several times for several seconds, then re-attaching AC, does the system restart?  No video?  Any beeps?
Lastly, if you are seeing a high percentage of failures of your install base, please contact your account rep so that we can get the right level of resource involved to help resolve this.   If you have a single system, please call service if you are unable to reset the system.
    Thanks!
