Power button pressed when ibook closed

I have a iBook G4 14-inch. Its power button protrudes above the surface of the bottom panel. When the ibook is turned off and closed, the top bezel will press down into the button if the ibook is pressed together, such as being placed inside a case. This is my only ibook (have a PB alum and 2 pismos) so I cannot determine if the button should protrude above the surrounding panel. The ones on the pismos are recessed. When we pack the ibook, we have to remove the battery to keep it from booting up (and then have to reset the clock when it's up because there is no PRAM battery).
I have taken this ibook apart several times to replace parts (including a complete new display) so I cannot be sure how the high thebutton should be. Thanks.
PB G4 1.33 15 Aluminum

Thanks for the info. I assume if you press on the lid when it's closed, it does not power up.
When I take off the top cover, I'll see if the heat shield or something else is keeping the button pushed upwards. It may be that the plastic case (top or bottom) is warped enought to make a difference. I replaced the entire display section with one from a 1Ghz ibook G4 and it may be causing a problem. I may have to swap back to the original screen bezel and case to make things work. Ugh.

    1. Why it went black and is there a permanent fix for this
2.Will the IOS gets automatically updated as I feel the IOS was 5 when I got the phone in 2012 december
    3.Do you suggest 7.1 for Iphone 4

    1. There is no way of knowing. These things happen.
    2. The iOS only gets updated when you want it to be.
    3. You should always update to the latest iOS your phone will support. Apple do not write the updates to make your experience worse.

Hello I shut my iMac down to move it to the next room when I plug it back into the wall, hit the power button nothing happens. I tried holding the power button nothing when't back to the first room plug it in where it was 2 mins ago nothing?

Do you know which iMac model family you have? There are four families dating back to 1998. Troubleshooting depends on that. This forum covers the first three families made from 1998 to 2005. iMacs newer than that get a separate forum.
Do you have the system disks that came with the computer? If so, and depending on model, you may be able to start from the CD/DVD and then make the jump to booting normally.
All computers has a little battery on the logic board that holds date, time, and some important startup parameters when the compuer is taken off wall power for a short time. If your battery was very old and died, then the settings the computer needs to start may have been lost when you unplugged it. For some Mac modles, booting from a CD or DVD gets around this temporarily, but ultimately the battery needs to be replaced. The internal batteries are cheap but can be hard to access on some iMacs like the G4 "desklamp" model

  • Is there a way to automatically shut down laptop when power button pressed?

Of all the things I am having to struggle through a learning curve on MacOS (converted from Windows), this might seem like a rather benign concern, but I'm going to ask anyway. . .
I would like for my laptop to automatically go through a shutdown process when the power button is pressed - that is, bypass the dialog box that appears when hitting the power button that gives you the option to restart/shutdown, etc.
I've looked in all of my system preferences without anything that controls the behavior of this button so I imagine there might be a terminal command or an app that might accomplish this?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

I'm trying to set up my MacOS to have the power button automatically go through the shutdown process as IF I had actually clicked on a confirmation box to shut down the computer.
I don't know of any way of doing that... perhaps there's a 'haxie' out there that would generate a shutdown command when pressing the power button, but I don't know of one.
    Sorry,

  • Mbook needs power button pressed multiple times to start up when on battery

    Hey all,
Not sure if anyone's had this particular problem, but here goes:
When on battery power, my Macbook does not power up properly--I have to press the power button 5,7, probably close to 10x sometimes before it goes on. Each time I press the button I can hear it begin to start up but then it shuts down.
Anyone had a similar problem? Or care to speculate on a possible reason/way to fix it? Figured I'd ask before I take a trip to the Apple store.
    Thanks!!

Check to see how many battery cycles you have on the battery in System Profiler. Apple-About this Mac-More Info...-Power. Let us know the number of cycles, condition, and maximum mAh.
It couldn't hurt to try a SMC reset by turning off the machine, unplugging the magsafe, taking out the battery, and holding down the power button for 5 seconds.
Next, reset the PRAM by putting everything back in, pressing the power button to turn it on, and holding down command-option-p-r until it chimes twice.
Last, calibrate the battery (if you can get it working). Charge fully and let it sit charged for two hours. Then unplug the power and let it run down fully until it goes to sleep on its own and let it sit discharged for five hours. Last, charge it fully. Do this every 2-3 months to keep the battery working well otherwise keep it charging when possible. The goal is 2-3 cycles per week.

  • Logoff/shut down/restart window does not appear when power button pressed

For a couple months now my G4 Powerbook running 10.4.6 has not responded to pressing the power button. This also applies to the restart/logoff/shut down options from the Apple menu -- no response.
I reloaded Tiger using the save personal preferences and settings and the malfunction is still there.
Ideas? (I haven't called AppleCare yet.)
    TIA

Assuming that you mean you did everything that Sherry
and I offered up in our responses, then create
another admin account, log into it, and see if the
problem persists. Cryptic one-line responses aren't
very helpful. If this suggestion doesn't make the
problem disappear, then install the latest COMBO
update (10.4.7 was released today), restart, launch
Disk Utility, repair permissions, restart, and
    hopefully that'll fix things.
I have another - "clean" - admin account and the problem persists there. And I downloaded the 10.4.7 update and the problem persists. If there isn't much to add, why go beyond, as you call it, a "cryptic one-line" response.
Ended up calling AppleCare and will do a clean archive and re-install. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • HT2173 iMac late2006 17". When power button pressed, white light comes on and stays on but nothing else happens?

As stated: our Mac won't turn on other than the white light on the bottom right.
Read through the support page which suggests taking the back off ( and use internal power switch) as in owners manual section 4, however it's not in there.  At the bottom there is a couple of screws and a couple of star head screws, I'm guessing I need to undo these and possibly pull from the bottom.  Don't want to break it,
    Thanks

A steady LED light generally indicates that the computer is on and the display is asleep.
Before you get inpatient and start taking out screws or trying to open it up, which is not an easy task on that model.
Reset the SMC, as per > Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.

    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Power button flashes when I try to scan HP Deskjet 2514

I first had a problem where my printer would not stop printing, even though I canceled it.  I looked it up and followed these instructions.  From the Desktop, hold down the Windows key and press R.  Into the Run window, type services.msc and hit enter.  Browse down to the print spooler service, right click it and select Properties then click on the Stop button.  Now browse to C:\Windows\System32\Spool\PRINTERS and delete the job inside this folder - You may need to click a prompt to gain the appropriate authority to open the PRINTERS folder. Restart the computer and you should find the document(s) have been removed. I didn't know which one to delete, so I deleted everything in the folder.  Now,  my printer will print, but everytime I try to scan something, my power button blinks and it won't scan.   Please help!

Hi , I read your post and see that you were able to resolve the issue for the print jobs not cancelling out, but now you are unable to scan. I would be happy to help you.
Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet. (don't use a power hub or a surge protector) This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation. Download and run the Print and Scan Doctor, it will diagnose the issue and might automatically resolve it. This software will also troubleshoot jobs stuck in the queue, which you could use in the future if the issue occurs again. What were the results when you ran the Print and Scan Doctor? (did it print or scan, any error messages) If you appreciate my efforts, please click the 'Thumbs up' button below. If there is anything else I can help you with, just let me know. Thank You.

  • LV PDA: Detecting Power button press

    Hi,
I am developing an application that i want to run on a PDA fulltime, so it'll be started and the power button will perodically be used to stand-by the ipaq. I need to perform an operation when the PDA is powered on in order to reinitialise my DAQ card in the CF slot.
I've found the "First call" VI, but this doesnt give a signal if the ipaq is power cycled. So my question is, how do i detect from LV PDA when either: the pda is powered on, or when the power button is pressed?
    Thanks
    Matt

I've found a solution that doesnt require checking for power on now. Not sure if this will help you or not..
Basically when the program first runs, i do the init. code. Then each time the program loops i check for an error from the dac card. If there is no error- run the acquisition code. However if there is an error (The pda has been power cycled and the program is trying to reference a card that isnt there) run the init code again and use a shift register to pass the new refnum onwards.

  • Will iPhone's power button damaged when applying a case

I am just wondering, when i tried to snap a hard covered case onto the iPhone and it involves the sides which requires quite an amount of force to put the case on, will the power button, volume buttons, or the mute switch be damaged when i apply the case and will the issue that effects those buttons be noticeable after i snapped the case on? Has anyone encountered damaged buttons after pu

While it is a good idea to be cautious when applying any case, the process typically does not represent a risk to the Power button, the Volume buttons or the Mute button.

    Hello,
I am having some weird problems with my ibook. I turn it on, it works for some minutes/ some hours then a black screen appears, tellin me to push the power button...it''s all frozen. it's even more weird the fact that this is happening one a day or once a week, but i have already lost a lot on info by having this kind of surprises:(
someone told me it might be the ram but...i don't know. i have already performed a fresh installation of mac osx but no luck.
    any suggestions?
    thank you

This error is not good news. It sounds like your hard drive is having issues. I assume that you ran the Disk Utility on your install disc and it gave you this message.
You didn't mention which version of OS you are running. Is it Panther (OS 10.3) or Tiger (OS 10.4)? Do you have all of the gray install discs which came with your computer? And do you also have a black retail disc? If you could give a little more information about your OS and your machine, that would be helpful. Also which install disc you used to run DU.
First of all, back up all of your data ASAP. Onto an external firewire drive would be ideal. And keep it backed up. Anytime you have hard drive problems, this is very important to do.
I am no expert on hard drives. There can be problems due both to directory issues and physical issues. Disk Utility can repair directory issues for the most part. If Disk Utility cannot repair the disk, it is sometimes possible to repair it by using a more powerful repair utility such as Disk Warrior, which costs about US$100.
At this point, I am not sure what your error is. If you are running Tiger, you want to use the DU on the Tiger disc. If you are running Panther, you want to use the DU on the Panther disc. If you happened to have used the DU on the wrong disc, this might have caused the error. If you used the appropriate disc, then the error is more troublesome.
I don't know if an erase and install would help or not, but I don't think it would hurt anything.
As for the Apple Hardware Test, it should be on one of your original gray install discs--either as a separate shiny disc or on one of the others--#1 I think. But there is also a place you can download it:
    Apple Hardware Test Images
    http://www.info.apple.com/support/aht.html
It's probably worth running the AHT and see if it tells you anything.
I am hoping that some of the more experienced and knowledgeable members of the forum will feel free to step in here and offer advice, as I have never had this experience myself, and can only draw on what I have been able to read about it.
    Good luck!

  • Keeping toolbar button pressed when displaying a popupmenu beneath it

I have written a custom widget - the drop down button. We can find examples of this widget all over the place - for eg. IE back button, Mail button, JBuilder run button etc.
    The problem is this:
when the arrow button is pressed I display the popupmenu. Now, I need the button to hold its "pressed" state and appear accordingly while the popup menu is visible.
              arrowButton.addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter(){
                   public void mousePressed(MouseEvent e)
                        showPopup();
    Any ideas?

Here is your SSCE. Feel free to compile and run it. It will bring up a JFrame with toolbar buttons that show what I was talking about.
Note that the non popup buttons appear pressed when the mouse is kept pressed on them. Not so for the popup ones.
I cannot use an actionListener instead of mouse listener while displaying the popups because I need the popup to be visible with the first press of the mouse, not the first release (just like a combo-box)

  • Battery loses power even when iBook closed

    Hi,
As of late, even when I close my iBook and carry it around in my bag, the battery is running down. I have taken to shutting it off before I carry it, but this is not always convenient. Any ideas about what could be causing the problem/if there's a way to fix it? It does seem to latch shut (and go into sleep mode) when I close it.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You could try resetting the PMU and see if this helps:
Resetting the PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Also, you might want to check the health of your battery. (About this Mac>More Info>Power). If your battery has a lot of cycles on it, it could just be getting old and not holding a charge as well as it once did.
    Good luck!
