Power button wont power off computer / no wake up.

I plug computer in to the wall outlet , green light on back where power cord plugs in comes on . power supply fan comes on. I press power button and computer tries to come on but no light comes on by power button.  no lights on keyboard or mouse light up. I will get a quick "no signal" on monitor and thats all (blank/dark screen).  If i go to power it down , the power button will not turn it off. I must unplug power cord to turn off tower.  I replaced CPU chip , but no change.  Any help would be appreciated !!  Thanks , Tim

  • Grey screen with message "turn off computer with power button until switch off then press again power button"

    Dear all,
I'm very hungry with my iMac and my Time Capsule :
I try for two weeks to restore my iMac without any success...
I wait 80 hours to finally have the message again and again : "to restart your computer : turn off computer with power button until switch off then press again power button".
But my iMac do not work !
    Could you help me?

    Hello, that's a kernel panic...
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X 10.6 Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Power button wont work

okay so about 10 minutes ago i was sitting down and had my phone charging in my lap, i didn't do anything differently and then all of a sudden my screen flashed on then off then on and off and so on about 5 or 6 times rapidly, now my power button wont work at all, no matter what, i have taken out my battery and put it back in but thats all i can think of, any ideas?

Good morning, jcmorgan17. Thanks for trying all the suggestions from your fellow customers. I'm confident that if you made it into the store, their hands-on evaluation was able to help determine if the phone needed to be replaced through your warranty http://vz.to/uyYF0o or if there may have been some prior damage and insurance http://bit.ly/07CrqPK or other replacement options were needed. If you were unable to visit the store, please call 866-406-5154 from an alternate line so we can help with finding the best solution as quickly as possible.

  • Decided to update iphone 4 to ios 5.1 and mid update it froze and the screen is black.  Phone does not respond to any combinations of home and power buttons, when plugged into computer it does not see it is plugged in, any ideas?

Decided to update iphone 4 to ios 5.1 and mid update it froze and the screen is black.  Phone does not respond to any combinations of home and power buttons, when plugged into computer it does not see it is plugged in so I cannot restore or anything.  Looks like the screen is on it's just unresponsive and black obviously.  Has anyone had this problem?  I was updating via wifi right in front of my router and my computer.

Spoke to a "senior advisor" in the Apple TV department.  Her suggestions:  change channel in router to minimize/eliminate wifi interference from other users; move router away from any metal - i.e., DVD player, phone modem, etc.; keep router away from wireless 2.4 gH phones, which are "notorious" for crashing wifi routers.  So she confirms that the problem is one of connection to router suddenly dropping out.
My own feeling is that none of these fixes will do the trick, because it seems pretty clear that there is a hardware component here - the timing of the drops seems like an overheating issue.  It takes 35-40 minutes for the box to warm up enough for the first drop; then each consecutive drop happens quicker than the one before, as it heats up more.  Each time it drops, its tiny brain gets a little more scrambled; last night it finally wouldn't start up again at all.
My suggestion is that everyone who is experiencing this problem, please call Apple tech support and ask to speak to a senior advisor in the Apple TV department.  Make them aware of this problem!

  • "Allow power button to put the computer to sleep" setting is not available but button does it anyway

This has never happened before. Computer stayed at gray screen with no progress wheel so I held the power button to shut it down. Since startup afterwards the power button sleeps the computer. There's no "allow power button to put the computer to sleep" choice available in Energy Saver but button does it anyway. Is there a defaults command that will fix it? Something else?

I've had Mavericks for a week and a half. I don't believe yesterday could have been the first time I used the power button in an attempt to get the Restart Sleep Cancel Shut Down box, but I've been around long enough to know that memory will fool you.

  • Mac Mini repeatedly getting "Press power button and restart your computer"

I keeping getting the following message coming up on my Mac Mini "Press power button and restart your computer". I have a G4 Mac mini and it boots up fine and runs ok for about 10 mins however after that time (if left) the message comes up. I restart the machine and the same thing happens again.

Isolate the cause as my FAQ suggests. Backup, or recover your data first*
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
and then discover if the issue is hardware, a directory, or software.

  • My ipod power button wont work but i feel it pressing the button. its not stuck its just defective. what do i do

my ipod power button wont work but i feel it pressing the button. its not stuck its just defective. what do i do

Try restoring the iPod to rule out a software problem. First restore from backup and then to factory defaults/new iPod.
Then an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Z1 silver Power button ring fell off!!

My Xperia Z1's silver ring around the power button just came off. It just fell off. I need to know if this is a serious issue and if it affects the waterproofness of the phone? I seems as if it was just held on by a little glue but now i cant trust the waterproofness. I searched online and found two other people complaining about it but with no replies. Can anybody please inform me how serious this is?

Just as Alexdon said you should turn to a service centre. This may interfere with the phones IP classification.

Are the lines like psychedelic herringbone?  If yes, I had that happen once, it was something serious, like the
Logic board. The good news is that it was fixed without any loss of data on the hard drive. Take it in to have Apple look at it ASAP.  I took it to TekServe at the time, they are very nice about preserving your data and user library when possible.
    Good luck and don't panic.

  • Power button connector torn off the logic board

During what seemed to be a routine repair I tore the power button cable connector off the logic board. Is there anything that I can do now that does not involve installing a new logic board?

Hey iBookfragger and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
Here's a pic of a 12" 1.33 board I have here in my repair pile:
    http://tinyurl.com/7s4epq
verify with a continuity meter that these points are connected on yours.
I then solder two tiny stranded wires to the SMT devices at the points indicated and lead those wires to the ripped socket contacts.
It's a lot easier and requires a much less steady hand than Duane possesses.
In addition some of these sockets leads didn't stick out as much as these for the 1.33 and are pretty much completely hidden under the socket itself.
These sockets were fragile. These were held physically to the board with the two solder attachment pads near the back. Others were epoxied to the logic board and the tabs were soldered to the traces.
I recommend not removing that plug when swapping out the hard drive. It's been ripped off the board too many times around here. Me included!

  • Power button ring fell off!

My Xperia Z1 is just 5 months old.I bought it brand new and it is an expensive device, but now I am having some issues with the power button. I am really disappointed with Sony. It was only recently that I noticed that it felt different pressing the power button. My friend who happen to be an xperia Z1 owner too, told me that the ring encircling the little button in the middle is gone. It fell off. I am from the Philippines and unlike in the US we are not getting much support here. I don't know were to take my phone to or who should I talk to about this issue. I had an Xperia Z before and I had some issues with it and I took it to a local shop for repair. The technician damaged my phone and now it is totally dead. My question is, will it be covered under warranty? I bought this from a certified Sony selling center just last August 2014 l. It's just 6 mos. old and it can't be a wear and tear issue because I take good care of my phone and I am not a heavy user. This must be a defect and Sony must do something about this. I am hesitant in paying for the repairs. Oh gahd, I really don't know what to do.

I am a big fan of Sony, they used to produce quality phones but now I had to purchase two xperia phones within a year because the phone won't last a year without having any issues. I am thinking that since the metallic ring encircling the power button just fell off.. I'm worried that the rest of it will follow. Please someone tell me what to do. I want Sony to be involved in this case that I am having with my Xperia phone.

I've tried safe mode but I dont understand what is happening. I tried pressing the power button on and off for several times and nothing happens, I'm always stuck on an apple logo and a spinning wheel. I dont know how to get to the Partition and the DiskUtility. The Apple Logo and the Progress Indicator will continue to spin and I have literally no idea what to do. i am in desperate need of help. help me pls

    Turn it off.
Start it up again and (at the sound of the chime) press and hold the command and the R keys, hold them down until Recovery loads. When it does you will select Disk Utility and you should be on the First Aid tab when it opens, if you are not please select it. Then select the partition (in the side bar, 2nd entry on the list, see picture).
Yours is probably called Macintosh HD.
Once you have selected it go to the lower righthand corner of the First Aid dialog and press Repair Disk.
This will take 10 minutes approximately. Post back when it is finished and tell me what it says.
