Power Cable extensions

While normal IEC extension cables fit into Macs, does anyone know if you can buy cables with the extra rectangular plastic as supplied with Macs?
I've recently heard that UPS manufacturers only cover equipment damage if plugged directly into the IEC sockets. However, I have tended to use power strips so that I can plug the Apple supplied cable (with 3 pin UK plug) into a 3-pin UK socket, which then goes into the UPS.
One factor which makes me reluctant to use a standard IEC extension cable is that they don't make as secure fit as the proper Apple cables - and I'm worried that despite being attached to a UPS, the cable is more likely to come loose or get pulled out by accident.

Check with the manufacturer about that. It's not the case with any of them that I've ever run into. Most UPS manufacturers recommend extra power line filtering for your equipment, and sell power distribution units, which would make it impossible to plug your IEC power cord directly into the UPS anyway. I think you're worried unnecessarily.

  • Charging iPad with Airport Express extension power cable?

I have the discontinued Monster Airport Express Stereo Connection Kit, it comes with 3 cables, one of which is an Airport Express extension power cable, I want to know if I can use this power cable to charge my new iPad. I have asked Apple staff who didn't know as they no longer stock the cables. The power cord has a UK wall plug on one end and a 2 pin connector on the other, made to slot into the airport express unit it the same fashion as the iPad power cable slots into the iPad power block. I understand the iPad needs 10w power charging. Does anybody know if this will be safe to use? Many thanks...

Use the power adapter/cable that came with the iPad.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. Hi and welcome to Discussions,
I must admit, that even after more than a year of constant iMac usage and connecting/disconnecting USB-Memory-Sticks about 200 times, I had not acomplished this task and disconnecting the power cable.
IMHO, the easiest way might be either an extension chord for the USB port or a USB-Hub.
At least that's what I would get.

  • Multiple faulty power cables? - surely not possibl...

    Hi,
I have had two Home Hub 3 modems. Neither of them will not acquire a broadband connection (flashing blue light) with the supplied power cable. Both of them will acquire the broadband connection (solid blue light) when using the old (Home Hub 1) power cable.
How can a power cable provide power to the device but impeed the broadband connection? This is really weird.
    Has anybody else experienced this?
    Thanks,
    Mark.

You need to keep the ADSL input to the home hub, well away from any power leads.
I assume that you are using a filtered faceplate on your master socket, especially if you are a long distance from the exchange?
Any extension wiring is going to pickup interference.

  • Need internal power cable

    Hi,
I wish to install a USB 3.0 expansion PCIe card in my early 2008 Mac Pro (3,1).  The card has a 4 pin Molex power connector;  I think it's same connector one finds for power on a parallel IDE drive.  I believe I need to connect this to the 6 pin connector on my motherboard?  Anyone know where I can get a cable?
(PS: I posted this earlier, by mistake, in the iMac forum.  So this is a duplicate posting.  Apologies!!!)

    Grant Bennet-Alder wrote:
Mac Pro 3,1 is the 2008 model with Molex connectors.
Mac Pro 4,1 is the 2009 model with SATA cabling ONLY, so it would require a different cable.
After powering off, the Optical drive enclosure is really easy to remove halfway to inspect and/or disconnect the cables (no fasteners required). Once the cables are disconnected from the drives, it can be completely removed and you can stretch out the cables and see if they will fall short, and estimate how much more would be needed.
I am sure 72" is far more than you need -- they may even reach already.
Thanks, Grant. I will examine the connections. My project is to add USB 3.0 card reader or other devices to the PCI expansion card I'm planning to get.
Do you know if there are two separate DVD/CD drive power cables in the stock Mac Pro 3,1 or just a single with a Y cable between them? That is the model I have. If only one cable of the two used there, can stretch out the other one, then I'd be golden- nothing to add.
However, I suspect that there is a Y cable there for the second DVD drive, so I would need to connect to it and extend it down to the PCI card residing in the X4 PCIe port. Yes, 6' is overkill but I can eat some up by routing the cable neatly, the rest will bundle. Probably 48" would be sufficient. That costs more to make than it is worth.
When I take it apart, I can post pictures for anyone interested. FYI, recently put in an external antenna for the BT antenna to prevent/minimize interference with USB 3.0. Made a big improvement in level of the trackpad reception, too. USB crosstalk should be reduced and cable pickup will be reduced with the RF suppressors I used on the extension cable from the USB card reader to the card.

  • T61 power cables or connectors

I need some 10ft/3m extension power cables for T61 (output of power adaptor to actual laptop). Does anyone know of a source for these, or for suitable matching male/female connector pairs so I can get them made up. I need around 100 as a first order.
I would prefer a UK supplier, but would also look at other suppliers.

As far as I'm aware, no one has yet located the 20V style power connector (as used by Lenovo and some other equipment suppliers) as a separate, solder-connect part.  It seems to only exist in moulded-onto-cable forms.
Is it practicable for you to run either main extension cables on the 240V side of the power adapter, or purchase longer mains power cords for the adapters?
    Cheers,

  • Macbook Pro 2011 DVI HDMI out does not work with TV when the power cable is connected

My Macbook Pro (Early 2011) DVI HDMI out does not work with TV when the power cable is connected. If get the blue screen and then can use the macbook but nothing is displayed on the TV. If i go into display I can see that there are two screens but nothing displayed on the TV. If i take the power cable out at this point the TV shows the second desktop as expected. If i then reconnect the cable, the screen flickers, as though it is being affected by the power cable, and the screen goes blank on the TV. Only if i remove the DVI cable do i get the blue screen again. If i remove the power cable and reconnect it will do it every single time, so i cannot see it being a TV issue or a minor glitch.
I have had this working previously but at the minute it seems to not be playing ball....any thoughts
    Thanks

Does anybody knows where can i buy a replacement AC power cable for my cinema display 27"?

It may not be the same molded plug but I would think any normal 3-prong computer power cable should work.

I've always had the theory that if you put two computer power cords in a drawer they will breed and you'll end up with a lot more!   My parts drawer is always full of them.  They like to knot up by themselves as well!  Maybe that's how they breed.

  • I live in the US but am moving to the UK. I have a iMac and want to know if I can just exchange the power cable or will I need a transformer to be able to use it there?

I have had my iMac for about a year and have just found out that I am moving to the UK from the US. I want to take it but I don't want to damage it. Can I just get a replacement power cable in the UK (like the international switchable plugs for iPads) or will I have to use a step-down transformer? Thanks

Just the plug-end needs changed.  I the UK you should beable to find the cord that plugs into the back of the iMac and has the correct wall-end.
