Power Consumption in UCS

Hi,
We are running 4 Chassis in our enviroment with firmware 1.4 (3q) and recently we had an issue with one of the PSU (PSU2) in chassis 2 and we got it replaced and after that we are observing that 1 of the PSU in each chassis is showing as "Power Save" (PSU-Details_All_Chassis.JPG) state.
I want to understand that how Power consumptions works in UCS, I have also attached "Power Groups" (Power-Group_Details.jpg) snap shot for the reference.
Want to understand what is "unbounded" & "cap-ok". When will "power save" state PSU will be ON state and does it will go again in "power save" state.

The best way to figure out your power requirements however is to use the following tool:

To answer your question however about the N+1 I have included an explanation below.
Also instituting power capping at the chassis level requires the following:
    IOM, CIMC, and BIOS version 1.4 or higher
    2 PSUs
A minimum of 3788 AC watts should be set for each chassis. This  converts to 3400 watts of DC power, which is the minimum amount of power  required to power a fully-populated chassis.
This means that after 1.4 release the minimum with power capping is 2 PSUs. For example previous to 1.4 release a system that was set for N+1 (1+1 for example) would need to have 3 PSUs N+1 (2+1) in releas 1.4 and greater. This is because of the power groups minimum requirement.
If the power is required the +1 should be made available to meet the redundancy requirements. If it is not needed it is turned off / power save.

    I'm way to lazy to read all this stuff (that's my nature) but I tried a few things with an IP phone and an access point because a customer was interested.
    TAC said to forget about the access point, LMS will only manage the IP phone. 
    Do you see these endpoint devices in LMS anywhere? I asume you managed to get the agent software and put them on these devices.
    In theory they should then get 'discovered' as endpoints. Not sure how LMS would be able to do that though. Unless the endpoint agent knows about LMS and starts talking I don't see how it could work.
    Anyway, the theory is that in LMS you have a group of endpoints in an endpoint group. Then you should be able to configure endpoint attributes.... , and then you should be able to create a policy and apply it to that group. But I think the policies you can create in LMS now, are for IP phones only.
    You should also be able the generate power reports on an endpoint group. Provided you are able to discover these endpoints.
    Do let us know how you are getting on with this though. Energywise is interesting but the current implementation in LMS may be a bit too minimalistic. (please prove me wrong)

  • 3000 J converted to NAS, Are there fan control settings/ways to reduce power consumption?

    So I've had this old 3000 J series - (J115 7388) that's been sitting doing nothing for a while, so I decided to convert it into a FreeNAS, I've stripped out the DVD, card readers, anything unneccesary to reduce power usage - on that theme I have a few questions...
    1. Is there a setting in the BIOS to automate the fans as & when needed to make the system quieter & to reduce power consumption - there will be 2x 2tb WD green drives in there with an idle time of 5 mins, atm I'm using one 320GB HDD from an old laptop - the system won't be used 90% of the time & I'd like it to be able to react when needed rather than constantly be on
    the specs http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-67129 say the fan is variable, but I can't see anything obvious in the BIOS, it did take me some time to find the boot order, so maybe I'm overlooking something
    So that's my main question & this is the bonus
    2. I know there's an Nvidia C51G chipset in there somewhere, is it possible to remove this, there's no GUI on the pc anymore, so again, & also anything else like sound, just to make it as efficient as possible & not to have any unessesary components using power
    I have downloaded updated the latest BIOS (circa 2007) onto another pc from http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS001014 - even if it does provide an update to what I already have - I did note 2007 already on the BIOS version, of course I can't run it to try to make a bootable usb as the downloaded exe is for XP

    Are you sure there are no trojans or viruses on laptop? Also lounch the task manager and check out the service or application with deranged CPU loading while the laptop is in the idle mode. What is the power usage in the idle mode?

    well the topic says it. Powermanager 1.60 has removed the abilty to show the current power consumption in the tray.
    I realy frustrated right now, why the heck did they remove this nice feature?
    And this new energy slider is just trash. If i change back to advanced mode, i cant see my current power consumption. Nor in the main battery tab. The field "Current Power" is just blank. And the option in the tray vanished.
    What the **bleep** are these guys doing. There was a time i fought this powermanger is the best software ibm/lenovo ever produced, but since the change of the ui, and removing important features. Its unbeliveable.
    Especialy if you are on windows xp, this looks like **bleep**, and this "new" gauge desgin, flickers and stops my mouse on hower over the new "Design".

I'm not a person who watches movies on his smartphone, and I don't browse the Internet intensively using my smartphone.     In fact in the table (n°7) of the Cisco 2900 Series ISR (G2) datasheet, that sum up the power consumption data for Cisco 2900 series routers there is the line : "Maximum Power with PoE Power Supply (Platform Only) (Watts)", and I would like to know what is exactly the meaning about the mention "Platform Only".

    This is the maximum power that is consumed exclusively by the router from the PoE PS (Power Supply). The power capacity that the PoE PS gives to other PoE devices (IP Phones, Cameras, APs, etc) is specified in the line below "Maximum End-Point PoE Power  Available from PoE Power Supply (Watts)" of the datasheet.

    Does anyone know the differences in power consumption between the Apple-supplied 750GB 5400rpm HDD, 500GB 7200rpm HDD, and 256GB SSD drives?  I'm currently using a 2011 MacBook Pro with an Apple-supplied 256GB SSD and I'm getting between 5-8 hours of battery life, depending on what I'm doing.  I wish it could get closer to a full 10-hour battery life for longer trips, but I realize there's a price for performance.  What's the best hard drive option to minimize power consumption?  Are there any other tips for increasing battery life?  Does it make a difference if you turn off Bluetooth and WiFi when you know you're not going to be able to use them?  Thank you in advance for your reply.

    Yes, turn Wi-Fi and BT off when not needed. That and your screen are the biggest power consumers. Keep the brightness as low as you can to conserve power.

    i did the offered upgrade to W8, i am very satisfied with the W8 system, but the problem is that the notebook is consuming battery also in the hibernate mode.
    I would understand that the power consumption will be in the sleep mode, but on the hibernate mode?
    I found out that when the computer enters the sleep mode or hibernate mode and i open the lid, the computer automatically starts EVEN if the option to "power up computer when lid open" is unchecked.
    When i select to power off computer - it does not react to open lid, i have to press the power button.
    The problem could be in the windows system, that the OS tolds the computer to wake up when the lid closed.
    The problem is, that the computer starts charging everytime i wake up from hibernation (i had my office 15minutes from home, and it consumes about 1-2% from battery.
    It is quite anoying that my full charge battery capacity is on 83% of original one (i bought my PC in June2012).
    I had Lenovo T60 7yrs ago, and there was an option to start charging the battery only when the battery charge was under 95% and it saves the battery capacity.
    Does anybody have some clue?

    As far as I know such option is not available on Toshiba notebooks. When connected to AC power supply notebook starts to load battery automatically.
    There is no option to change anything.

  • W520 nvidia quadro power consumption

    Dear community, I have a short question about power consumption. I did a clean install of windows 7 64bit on my W520 with a quadro 2000. Power consumption when idle with max brightness is somewhere at 18 watt, definitely highter than what I had with the Lenovo default installation. Checking Lenovo's energy software indicates that the GPU is running at full speed all the time so I thought this could be a source of additional power consumption. I installed the latest Lenovo graphics driver from the homepage, but I'm not sure if thats enough. Maybe there is a problem with Nvidias Optimus technology or the switchable graphics? I'd be glad about any feedback and, yes, I know that I'm a little bit on my own with a clean install. :-) Thanks, Branagh

    I get these numbers from the basic view. The battery tab does not indicate power consumption when I have the power chord connected. If I'm on battery the wattage numbers match.
    But the result remains the same no matter if I'm on battery or plugged, or what power settings I use (setting the display to max brightness and the machine idling): If I force the laptop to be on the Nvidia graphics, power consumption is at arond 18W, if I allow it to use the intel graphics, it goes up to at least 20W. GPU load in the power manager is always given at 100%.
    GPU-Z gives more adequate numbers I guess. When I force the Nvidia GPU, the load is correctly displayed at 0% when idle and the core clock goes down to 50Mhz. When I use the intel graphics the load remains at 1% and the core/ram clocks remain at 650 / 533 Mhz all the time.

  • Nokia N86 power consumption

    I have a Nokia N86 which is 2 years old.
    I have been experiencing a problem with battery drainage since I bought it. The battery meter suddenly drops from 5 bars to one bar when I browse the net using HSDPA, after about 30mins or so, when the phone is already hot. I sent it into service once, because it happened very randomly and it did not look like a major issue. They said they recalibrated the battery. After a week of somehow uniform battery draining, the battery started going flat suddenly, again, from 5-6 bars to "low battery".
    I went to a service center again to check if it's the battery or the phone. Nokia Energy Profiler says that the current is about 400-500mA when using HSDPA. The engineer at the service center connected a power supply with measurable current consumption, and during the usage of HSDPA, the current was at least 800mA, with almost 1000mA peaks. He said that these current intensities damage the battery in about a month and that he would not recommend changing the battery, but the HSDPA chip. The warranty period expired a month ago.
    I am asking you guys:are these values normal? 800-1000mA during HSDPA usage for a Nokia N86? I need a serious, valid opinion from somebody who really knows mobile hardware. Thank you.

    This has happened to me every now and then. First it seems as if the battery is almost full and then it's suddenly empty even without using the device much.
    Sometimes the device feels warm. In those cases I just reboot it.
    Obvious things to check would be that BlueTooth and WLAN are off if you don't need them.
    Sometimes the switch of the kickstand has activated when I have carelessly thrown the phone on a bed for example. If you have defined it to start an application that could cause some power consumption.
    I haven't tried to measure my power consumption. I guess there are two options:
    - the device actually consumes a lot of power sometimes
    - the battery indicator isn't always up-to-date i.e. it shows several bars when the battery is actually almost empty.
    It's a shame because it's a pretty nice phone and I quite like it. Luckily it's quite a rare problem. 
    (But not that great if the battery dies during a bicycle trip just because I have SportsTracker running.)

    Does anybody know what is the max power consumption in watts or miliwatts and the max working current in mA of the sony bm10 bluetooth receiver.Is it possible to power it with a rechargeable battery pack for outdoor use (no AC outlet) and if so, how many mAh should the battery pack be in order for the bm10 to work for 4 - 5 hours? As i am ignorant about these issues i would really appreciate any help.

  • ALC889 power consumption

    Hello,
    i'm running a little media server on clarkdale basis (MSI H55M-ED55, Intel i3-530) with sound chip ALC889.
    Kernel is 2.6.32.9-1-ARCH and architecture is x86 Archlinux.
    The hardware is supported nicely so far however there's one thing i'm not very happy about.
    When playing music the power consumption climbs from 20 Watts (idle) to 28 Watts although the workload of the CPU is only 1%.
    Enabling power_save for the chip alone saves 2 Watts when idling.
    Compared to the consumption of the audio chip in Windows 7 which is 1 W at most the 8 Watts are unusually high for a sound chip. Is that a known issue or do you know if it can be resolved somehow? I've tried kernel 2.6.33 but the high sound consumption remains.
    I assume it's just a kernel driver thing which i can't do anything about but I'd be glad to hear different.

    Step 4. I used the current clamp to measure the current on the remaining power input and it reads 4.9 A.
    When I multiply the current with voltage I get 
    P=4.9*230=1127 W.
    So why does the show power output gives system power used = 2253.72 Watts, which is actually double value of measured 1127 W? What am I missing?

    Where are you located and what AC line voltage are you operating on (208 or 230v)?  I ran into your post and was wondering if you were operating on 208v which is line to line (two hots) and perhaps you are only measuring current on one line, effectively half the power.
