Power cord - not charging

Several times recently I have had my power cord suddenly stop supplying power to my MacBook. I will notice that the green light goes out at the adapter. Occasionally if I change the cord to another outlet it will start to charge again. But evenings like tonight, it doesn't seem to matter, I'm running on battery power.
Can anyone help? My MacBook is VERY important to me. I'm taking classes online and without power, I'm in trouble. So if anyone can offer advice it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I'll look at that here tonight.
It doesn't happen all the time. But it has about a half a dozen or so within the last month. I don't have access to another cable. Its just me.
Is there anything that would interfere with the charge? I live in a duplex and have neighbors upstairs. Could it be them using something? It has only happened at night.

  • No AC Power, Battery not charging, Windows boot up issue

Searched the forums but could not find an answer for my specific problem.
    COmputer: L355 - S7905
    Windows XP Professional
Issue: installed new motherboard.  When on AC power, laptop shows a steady green LED light but will not boot up without the battery installed.  Will not stay running when the battery is removed or dies.  When plugged into AC power, battery charging light is on but battery continues to lose power; will not charge.  Had the computer operating properly initially but noticed the power issue.  I ran a chkdsk on one of the subsequent boot ups and now have a "config.sys file missing" error and can not get into windows any longer.  I was going to try some of the battery charging suggestions listed on this forum but no longer can get into windows or the recovery council.  Last screen attainable says to select "R" to repair system using a Windows disk.  Can not get to a DOS prompt.
    Status so far:
    - Ran volt meter check on power adapter and getting steady 19 volts.  Various motherboard checks with a voltmeter are seem normal.
    - All LED lights on laptop are indicating the computer is working in a proper state (ie power light on, batt charging light on, HDD light on when in use, etc)
    - replacement motherboard is the EXACT same motherboard as the original.  Same model - identical.
    - Can get passed BIOS screen successfully; can get into boot options screen (Safe Mode options, command prompt, etc) but all options eventually default to an error message I get from the chkdsk program and I can not go any further.
    - Laptop did not come with an original Win XP restore disk.
    - Battery is a replacement but is the exact same part number as on the Toshiba original battery.  Battery seems to be operating perfectly once it is charged (had to go to computer accessory store for charge)
    Questions:
    - Why is the AC power only not able to run the laptop??  Is it a software issue??
    - Once I can get into the windows OS, I presume I should be able to correct the battery not charging issue . . . is that right??  Sounds like it is a software issue from what I have read on the forums.  My plan was to reinstall the Windows operating system but I can not do that on battery power alone.
Any suggestions on how to proceed??
    Thank you - Paul
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Lawrence - Your suggestion was right on target, the replacement adapter solved my power problem.  I would have never believed that to be the problem since the digital voltmeter was indicating the required 19v from the defective adapter, I would obviously NOT have figured this out on my own.  Thanks for your time, response and help on this issue, I really appreciate it.

  • Battery not charging, LED light on power cord not on

Hi. My battery was not charging. So I bought a new battery. Even when the battery said 0%, the power cord kept the computer running. The new battery says 59% right out of the box, but it still says that the computer is not charging it. The power cord light is off, and has been since the problem began. I have tried plugging into multiple outlets, but the battery will not charge. The computer still stays on. What should I do now??

  • NEW macbook pro power cord not working

I just bought my macbook pro 3 weeks ago and for some reason my power cord is not working to charge the computer. There doesn't appear to be any damage to it and I've tried plugging it in to different outlets etc. and no luck. I noticed one day that it was blinking on and off from charging and not charging and then the next day it just stopped working completely. Is this a common thing? Should I just go buy a new one?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your power adaptor is under warranty as well as your new Mac. If it isn't working, Apple should replace it for free under warranty.
You might want to try resetting the SMC:

This is likely the first thing they would do at the Apple Store, and it may well solve the charging problem.
    Good luck!

  • Spilled water on Laptop- it works only when power cord NOT plugged in.

HP  Pavilion dv2000 laptop I spilled plenty of water on the right side where the power cord is. I removed that and took the battery out. (12 cell i think) Dried out the laptop for about a day or so. The laptop is fine except when I'm trying to charge while ON, it automatically turns OFF. So, what gives? How much money do I have to pour into it to fix it?
    Thanks!

Water and electricity do not mix (obviously ).  When you are plugging in the adapter into your computer, there may be a short somewhere where the water was.
Maybe let it dry out some more, otherwise, I would take it to a local repair shop to look at it (if you're out of warrnty).

  • Power cord not lighting up!

So usually when I plug the power cord into my macbook pro, the light does not come on. At first, I figured it was a problem with the cord because it was old (both computer and cord purchased in 2005) and because when I messed around with the connection on the "brick" and moved it around, it would work.
Now, I bought another power cord, and it is doing the same thing. I can still get a good connection, but it sometimes takes a good 5-10 minutes of screwing with the power cord. Help!?

Does the new mag safe have an "L" shaped end instead of a "T" shaped end? I have heard that there have been some problems getting them to work properly with original MBP's.

Not sure which Mac you have or if it might need the update for the charger to work. Best thing would be to do as Baby Boomer suggests, take both adaptors and your Mac in for evaluation.
    Good luck!

  • Power cord (not supply) for a1289 Mac Pro?

I just bought a Mac Pro a1289 on the internet and it doesn't have a power cord.  Before I stick just any power cord in this thing, I want to know exactly what cord is appropriate--not a power supply, a cord.  Strangly, it ain't that easy to find a part number for this device (mid 2010, emc # 2314).  Any authoritative help out there?

That Mac accepts standard IEC C13/14 cords used in thousands of electrical appliances. Cords are available everywhere, including Radio Shack in the US.

  • Macbook pro goes to sleep doesn't wake up...noticed the light on the power cord not on...

My MacBook Pro goes to sleep and this time will not wake up. I hold the start button down for count of 10 without results. I noticed the light on my power cord isn't on...and I've jiggled the cord and plugged it into a working outlet. Help!

All Apple laptops will go to sleep when the battery gets low, during this sleep you will not be able to wake it up.  based on what you are saying, to me it sounds like the battery is low because your power supply failed.  I would recommend either barrowing power supply from a friend, or bring it to the apple store, that way you can test it with a good power supply, it that is the case, replace it.

  • UK USB power adaptor not Charging

I bought an iPhone 3G last week from the O2 shop - I have tried the UK 3 pin plug in charger with the phone - but it does not charge, cable supplied works when plugs into USB on my Macs.
I have tried the adaptor with my 5Gen ipod, still no charge.
Is there a return policy? - who should I chase for the replacement, O2 or apple store.

Applecare suggested the best option is to take the adaptor into an apple store for a no hassle exchange accessory...
She said if I wanted to exchange it at 02 it would have to be a replacement boxed product Handset and all, which involves backing up all my data etc...
Trip to local store is not a problem!

  • Why is my Xperia C no power and not charging?

I'm using it for almost 1 year with no problem unfortunately last night my phone shut off and I tried to charge it, but not charging. I'm so upset. What happened? could anyone help me on this? Badly needed. thank you!

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.
I suggest that you remove the back cover and use a paper clip or similar to hold the reset button down for 5-10 seconds. If there are no reaction, connect it to the charger and let the phone charge for 1-2 hours. If the battery is completely flat, it may take a longer time before the phone indicates charging or powers on.

  • Power cord not recognized?

My powerbook is about two years old and I haven't had any trouble with it before. Just recently though, when the power cord is plugged in, it still runs on the battery. The battery is run down now, and I can't turn the computer on because it won't recognize the power cord. Every time I plug the cord in, though, the orange light comes on.
I called Apple and they thought my powercord was frayed... I just put in the replacement, and am having the same problem.
    Can someone help?
    thanks

    Try removing the battery.
Any time I connect something like a projector or touch a USB cable on the case I get the power pack tripping out and some sparking.
Take battery out and restart seems to fix it.

  • Power cord not recognized by laptop

Does anybody know if the power cord, when you insert it is directly connected to the motherboard?

  • MagSafe power supply not charging any more + PowerPlug moving inside my MBP

    Hello,
I've purchasd my MBP at the end on March.
For now about 3weeks, I've been experiencing problems with my mag safe connector :
It plugs in but does not charge
At the begginning, by changing its side it would charge, but now even that doesn't work.
I've noticed that the MagSafe plug (inside the computer) is mobile. It moves about 1 or 2 millimetters, inside...
I must add that I didn't play football or other harmfull activities with my MBP, and has been on my desk or in its box since I've purchased it, unharmed.
Is this a known problem? What would be an appropriate answer to this kind of problem?
    Thank you.

MIne does the same, have to force it aside so it charges, and it got so hot, and one of the pins in both the adapter and the plug got burnt, i haven't had time to go to the mac store to get it fixed.

  • Power cord not fitting into charge port

I have a 15-n030us.  The power card has started not fitting snugly into the power port, and the charging is going on and off since it isn't tight.  I didn't do anything to it I know off, or push it in whenit wouldn't go in, wtc, it just sudddenly won't go all the way in.

    Hello @415 ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
This is a hardware issue with the notebook, which is indicated by the "not fitting snugly" part, and on/off charging doesn't help. I would contact HP phone support for hardware assistance. You can utilize this website to learn how to contact HP appropriately, based on your region: Contact HP Worldwide
