Power cord overheating, now won't charge

The end of my power cord, which connects to my Macbook Pro had gradually been getting warmer the past 2-3 weeks to the point where I couldn't touch it anymore (and quite frankly was afraid to leave the room with it plugged in). It stopped working completely Saturday night.
I have a Genius appointment tomorrow and was wondering if I needed to bring my MBP or just the cord?
Will they have a replacement cord at the store? I've already checked and power cords/adapters are covered by the AppleCare plan so I shouldn't be charged. I ordered the MBP 8/25/10, and two weeks later it was declared "DOA" by the Genius Bar. I had to wait 6 weeks for the replacement to arrive. They claimed it was because it had to be special ordered to due the Anti-glare screen.
Thanks

Charging input circuit on the motherboard is most likely fried....
I would probably suggest getting a new laptop.
This is a fairly common problem with laptops though.

My iPhone charges normally trought power outlet, But it won't charge or recognize trough USB connection on my MacBook, even in restore or DFU mode.
Please help me! I'm stuck on restore mode.

I tried on 3 different MacBooks, it doesn't work.
I have some updates though... It is recognized on my car sound system, and It is working fine when connected to a windows PC, I was able to normally activate it... so the problem is not on the connector, Macs just don't recognize it.

  • Have a G3 pismo, works great, but when I plug in the power cord, the light won't come on to indicate its charging. It is charging, and the battery is good, its just that the light won't come on. Could it be something with the backup battery?

I have a G3 bronze keyboard that works, with a good battery, but when the power supply is plugged in, the charging light on the back of the laptop
will not come on. It is charging however, and have two different apple power adapters and both will charge the main battery, it's just that the light won't come on.
Did a reset of the pmu, but no changes. The date stays current, but wondering if the backup battery could be getting weak and affecting it , or is something else going on?

The power connector in the G3 PowerBook is a weak link.  Removed, it looks like this:
    [image from http://microdocusa.com/specials.html ]
The connector probably hasn't failed, but the solder joints where "legs" on  the connector  attached to the logic/power board are under a lot of stress after 10 years of use. Little bumps and tugs on the power cord eventually degrade the connection. You can check for looseness easily---see if the connector feels loose when you GENTLY wiggle it with a fingertip. It should have zero play if it's still firmly attached. You can also plug in the power adaptor and see if slight movements if the plug make the light turn on. Pretty diagnostic of a loose connector.
    The date stays current,
Make sure you are doing this check correctly. If you have an always-on internet connection, the date/time are fed froma  network time server and will always read properly unless you test with the internet connect turned off or disconnected.

  • IPod touch dropped on the ground while charging and now won't charge

Long story short, my wife was charging her iPod touch, one of our kids walked by and knocked the iPod to the ground and yanked the cord that was connected and now the iPod won't charge. If we wiggle the portion of the cord that's attached to the iPod (not the USB connected to the mac) it will make the sound like it is connected and then disconnects. We have found that if we sit the iPod a certain way sometimes it will charge but not 100% of the time. It almost seems like it is losing the connection in the cord but we have tried 3 different cords. Any suggestions on ways to make a tighter connection (think sticking the pencil in the old school Nintendo to keep your game cartridge to connect)?

Worste case, Apple shoud exchange yours for this price:
Apple - Support - iPod - Repair pricing
This place does not mentions a dock connector replacement but you can call and ask them.
iPhone Repair, Service & Parts: iPod Touch, iPad, MacBook Pro Screens
    You can Google fo others.
I would first make and appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store to verify/determine the cause of the problem.

  • I think my computer over heated and now won't charge! Can that happen?

I had my laptop plugged in and I notice the charger and the computer where really hot. So, I unplugged it and started it up and everything was fine. The next day however, my computer won't charge and the bright green light that appears when you plug In does not light up. Mind you, a dim green light that is always on the charger is still there. Any help?

  • MacBook shuts off without power cord, even when battery is charged

I bought my MacBook in October. I've been treating it really delicately. But for some reason, it will not run without the power cord plugged in (as of yesterday morning).
If I pull it out, it shuts down. If I try to start it up without the cord, it shuts down. It gets about 2-3 seconds before it just shuts off. (It will run in sleep mode without the cord plugged in.)
And for a brief time yesterday evening, it worked without the cord plugged in.
This is my first Mac and I have no idea what is going on.

This is a recently common issue with Macbook Lith-ion batteries.
You have a defective battery, although AppleTech defines defective as a battery below 350 cycle counts. That's the lifetime of your $130 battery, which may average between 6-13 months depending on how you use it.
Some customers have had to buy 3 batteries in the past 2 years because AppleCare doesn't cover consumable items, eg. batteries.
check consumer comments at http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?fnode=h ome/shopmac/macaccessories/power&revw=MA561LL/A
I'm hoping Apple will realize that a $130 macbook battery with a 350 cycle count lifetime, doesn't live up to "Apple" standards. Lith-ion batteries are known to have a 2-3 year lifetime not 6-13 months.
Customers shouldn't have to purchase AppleCare only to realize they have to continuously purchase new batteries every 6-13 months.
This is truly a manufacturer defect in my personal opinion.

  • IPhone 4 keeps overheating and won't charge properly?

So my iPhone 4 suddenly started to lose it's charge very quickly, and it got quicker and quicker until it took 1 hour to charge to 3%. It then started getting warm all the time, and now overheats whenever I use it for more than about 10 minutes. I thought this was the battery, but I got the battery changed and the same thing is happening. Anyone know what the problem is or how much it would be to fix?

  • My iPhone 4 (about 2 years old now), won't charge or turn on, please help!

Could it be, is my battery finally completely dead? Does Apple schedule your device to die a month or so before their next iPhone launch date? :/ I wanted to wait to upgrade to the next iPhone but mine just seemed to die out of nowhere. Here's the background:
It's about 2 years old now. I did replace the screen about 8 months ago when it shattered, that was through a third party. I think ever since I did that, the touch sensors were a little wacky (i.e. when I made phone calls, my cheek would still press buttons on the device even though the touch senssors should be off when you have it up to your cheek). But overall, it was "ok". I knew I was due for an upgrade but it was fine for the time being.
So last night I left my iphone charging and when I woke up, it was dead. I tried charing it but it was not responding. I've held down the power button and home button at the same time for at least a minute at a time while the phone is charging through a wall socket. Still nothing.
Question one: Is it fixable and if so, how?
Question 2: If it's not fixable, can I still get my information (i.e. contacts and whatever else) off the device?
    Thank you for any help!!

    1.  you may have to take it in to Apple and get an out of warranty iphone for $199.
    2.  you can get your information from a backup of your phone.  you do have a backup of your phone right either in iTunes or icloud.  If you don't then your answer will be no.

  • New battery run dead and now won't charge at all. Put in old battery and system runs fine just that battery is no good.

Old battery in MBP is testing bad so I purchased a new one. When I cycle the battery as soon as it totally drains down it will now not take a charge or even boot my computer with the cord plugged in. I have tried many many dif things to get it to run, so far nothing has worked. I put in the old battery and it boots right up.

  • IPad charger used for iPod Touch, now won't charge iPad

Hello everyone! I need help. :( This is what happened. i charged my iPod Touch with the charger that came with my iPad 2 and the iPod charged okay. Now I connected the charger to my iPad and there was no response at all (no charging or not charging sign).
This is the second time this happened. The first time was when my aunt used the iPad charger for her iPhone 4 which charged okay. When I used it for my iPad after, it did not work as in now. What I did the first time was connect the charger's detachable head (see image http://www.thefonestuff.com/product_images/c/441/MB706_AV1__57136_zoom.jpg) to a Macbook charger. The Macbook charged okay and when I reconnected it to my iPad, the iPad began to charge as usual.
I don't understand what happened. Was the charger somewhat "inactivated" in both instances because it was connected to a device that required a different amount of power? Without the Macbook charger, how can I "restore" the charger to its "iPad-optimized" state?
    Thank you for your reply!

    Icedgreco-
Changing the detachable head and changing it back, might wiggle an internal connection that is loose inside either the charger or the head.
It is also possible your charger cable has a bad connection.  Either way, I think you need to contact Apple about it.

  • IPhone overheated now won't work or even start

My IPHONE over heated from being in the car. Now it won't start. I tried rebooting it, but it wouldn't reboot.  The message on the IPHONE says to connect it to ITunes, but ITUNES wants to restore it, erasing all its data. Is there any way to save the data I have on my IPHONE?

If iTunes is prompting you it requires to restore the device then this will need to be done in order to fix up the phone being in Recovery Mode.
If a backup is present (you can check under Preferences -> Devices -> Backups within iTunes) then you can restore this backup to your restored iPhone to recover data. However if there is no backup listed then you will still need to restore the iPhone in order to get it working.

  • Flash From Within, now won't charge.  Please help

I have a 17 inch PowerBook 1.33, running the latest everything. I had my laptop plugged in (its a relatively new charger too, replaced recently) and was typing away with the laptop sitting on my lap.
I went to put it on the table in front of me, and at the moment that I put the computer on the table, I saw 2 blinks from within the computer. I saw these blinks through the left speaker, towards the top, right near where the charger plugs into the computer. As soon as that happened, the LED light on the charger went off, and the computer no longer thought it was charging.
I reset the PMU multiple times (shut down, ShiftControl+OptionPower Button, release, wait 5 seconds, start up computer) but to no avail.
I have a very depressing feeling that I blew something on the logic board, or soemthing happened that is going to require the loevely $700 charge from Apple to fix.
I figured I'd bring it into the Apple store and have Genius look at it, but I doubt that will solve anything.
    Any help would be appreciated.
-From a poor college student who is freakin out.

    A brand new battery would require a full charge in order to be used;
so you are lucky, in that the new battery had enough power already.
So that is not an indicator of much, other than the MagSafe Board
in the computer itself may have sustained damages due to ???
and would need to be checked over by an authorized tech or if you
are near an Apple Store with Genius bar, call ahead for appointment
to have a diagnostic test done and take along the MagSafe adapter
so they can see if that is part of the problem.
Of course, an optical drive issue could be part of a diagnostic check.
If you are in the US or Canada, the retail Apple Store offers a free
service of a diagnostic, even though the computer is no longer
covered by an AppleCare plan. So that is worth taking a drive...

Are the contacts on both the MagSafe adapter and MagSafe port
clean, or do they have an odd color or debris in/on them? It is
possible to clean them of debris, but don't use watery stuff. A
tool such as a wooden toothpick could be used to see if anything
on there could be rubbed off or out of the contact areas.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • IOS4 on 3GS - now won't charge on USB overnight

I have a 3GS which I have been charging overnight on a USB cradle. It has worked fine for a year or two, always up to 100% by morning.
Since updating to iOS4 a couple days ago, now it does not charge overnight. In the morning the charge is only at about 40%.
I typically shut down the phone overnight, so nothing is running or multitasking.
Why would a software upgrade change the way a shut down phone charges?

More details I have learned (iOS 4.0 on 3GS):
    - will not charge on USB cradle when switched off
    - will charge successfully on USB cradle when switched on
    - will charge successfully using Apple cube charger when switched off
How do it know the difference between the 5V supplied by the Apple cube and the 5V supplied by the USB cable?
