Power cut :(

Hello all..
Today we had 2 power cuts in a matter of minutes since this point i've started getting problems.. first up i was browsing the internet when the beach ball appeared, after some time the os said that some part of safari was missing and to re install it.. followed by the beach ball again.. so i manually shut down the G5.. restarted only for it not to find the startup disk..
so i booted from the osx leopard install and it still didn't find the startup disc.. no matter what i do i get nothing apart from the boot dvd.. even tried connecting to another mac to get my files off it.. got the error saying the old mac didn't have a os :o(
i tried repairing the disc.. with no luck either. said invalid leaf count
must admit it doesnt sound to good.. but i'd like to get my files off it if i could.
Does anyone have any idea on whats happen and if its something daft or more serious like hd failure
king regards
Chip

Macs do not take kindly to being abruptly shut off. In your case, your directory was likely hosed. Try first resetting your SMU:
1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
3. Wait 10 seconds.
4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
5. Let go of the power button.
6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
Then, if that doesn't work, try resetting the PRAM.

  • My new iMac will be exposed to  daily Power cuts ..........Advice Please

I am about to buy my first Apple Mac, an iMac 24 inch, a possible future problem I can for see is that here we get daily power cuts lasting between 5 minuest to 5 hours , I am planning on Buying a an UPS (uninterruptible power supply ) which I hope should automatically Close down the iMac when I am not there.
    My questions are.
If I am at the computer when there’s a power cut is there a quick way to shut it down That will not cause any long term problems to the computer say if ive no applications or work In progress that need saving I just need to shut the computer down - on this PC ive got a one click quick shutdown option
If I am at the computer when there is a power cut , and the UPS gives me time to manually turn of the computer before the power totally goes off, is there a correct fast Way to go about saving documents Etc and then shut off the computer in such a way that it will not affect the computer in any long term way.
If the computer is set to sleep and there’s a power cut , the UPS should shut it down Automatically , what would happen when the power is restored , would the
computer re start it self and return to sleep mode and if this is so would there be any long term Problems associated with this regular UPS automatic shut down and computer auto re start back to sleep mode.
Does any one think that the regular power cut's syndrome may in any way affect the long term running and reliability of the computer , has any one suggestions as to what's the best way to cope and prepare for this daily power cut situation..?
    Thanks .....

    1. If I am at the computer when there’s a power cut is there a quick way to shut it down...
In the top left corner of Mac OS X is an Apple menu available in almost every app you may be using with a Shut Down command. Mac apps are written to interrupt a Shut Down to query what to do about open files with unsaved content. After you have been given the opportunity to Save or Don't Save open files the Shut Down proceeds.
    2. If I am at the computer when there is a power cut , and the UPS gives me time to manually turn of the computer before the power totally goes off...
The UPS should give you more than enough time to safely save all open files, quit open apps and shut down the Mac. The quickest way to begin this process is the Shut Down command in the Apple menu. You should purchase the UPS that gives you the most time to take care of shutting down within your price range.
    3. If the computer is set to sleep and there’s a power cut , the UPS should shut it down Automatically , what would happen when the power is restored...
From my own experience of a homeland with an unreliable electric supply, I personally don't see any advantage of having the Mac restart itself to only be put to sleep. Especially if the power interruption is caused by an ongoing storm which may continue to interrupt the power
    4. Does any one think that the regular power cut's syndrome may in any way affect the long term running and reliability of the computer...
Macs are made to be left on 24/7, without being put to sleep. I sleep mine when not in use. My experience with Macs is they can take this power interruption in stride. Mine have for 24 years. I am grateful our federal power monopoly has improved over the years and my UPS is called upon to do its job much less frequently today!

I have an old (first generation) iMac that I still use sometimes for the applications that are on it. I was using it yesterday and unfortunately had a power cut. I went to turn it on today, and nothing at all happens. It's as though no power is getting to it. I've checked the obvious things, changed the fuse, tried different cables, poked paperclips in reset holes, but nothing doing. I wonder if there is anyone who knows what might be wrong. I was hoping to get some of its content transferred soon, but I'm guessing that can't be done if it can't be started up. Many thanks, if you can help

    Hello,
    >It's as though no power is getting to it.
Would it be correct to assume that no sounds at all can be heard? Also, no lights, not even green or amber at the power button?
    >unfortunately had a power cut.
Was it possibly a power cut in connection with a thunderstorm? Any other evidence of higher than normal voltages (light bulbs, et cetera)? Has the line voltage been checked (measured with an appropriate voltmeter/multimeter)?
If necessary, it would be possible to remove the hard drive, and then connect it to an external IDE/ATA to USB adapter (example below). That way you could gain access to files on the hard disk from another computer.

  • My History became cleared after a power-cut - can I find it in Time Machine ?

Normally, after a forced quit, Firefox restores all open websites. After a power-cut, this did NOT happen ... when I looked in History I found it completely empty (although I did not clear it).
I have Time Machine on my Mac ... but where do I look to restore the History ?

How have you searched in Time Machine?
If you can't recover them from there, the you'll need a file recovery application like File Salvage
Note that you won't be able to recover the Library the best you can hope is to recover the photos. The can by the file recovery software may find many files with the same name. In all cases choose to recover the largest file.

  • New Photo/Video Import Lost Due to Power Cut - Any Ideas?

I am using OS X 10.9.1, and iPhoto '08, V7.1.5.  My iMac was in the closing stages of a photo/video import from my iPhone 5 when a power cut occured.  I had thought the photos would already be in the new album that I'd just created because I had just been asked the question Keep or Delete Original Photos (I  responded DELETE).  When I restarted after the power cut, the new iPhoto album contained nothing at all, and 80% of the originals had been deleted off my iPhone.  I have tried looking in the main iPhoto library and Last Import folder with no joy.  Is there anythig else that I can try please?

Quick update to say that I found them!  I convinced myself that when the power cut occured, there's no way that a few GB of media could be instantly deleted, and thus they must be somewhere on the HD.......similar to data getting stored in a TEMP folder on a PC.  I managed to access the main LIBRARY folder via Finder >> GO >> OPTION KEY and then did a search for one of the photo numbers that I knew was missing. Amazingly found it together with all the other 588 missing photos & movies buried in a folder called 26Dec2013_2 (strange considering this happened on 01Jan2014 and all the photos/media were from the period 27Dec to 01Jan).  Note that my earlier search of the entire iPhoto Library package had also proved fruitless. Not sure where that folder was actually residing, but I copied the entire contents to my Desktop and then imported them into iPhoto.  In short, I am so happy!  Lesson learned about the dangers of power cuts, especially living in a city short on energy.  I will not do that again.  Hope this helps someone else sometime in the future. Thanks.

  • My files are all there and open in Preview but in Numbers they come up blank. Same in Pages. Any ideas please? My Mac was stopped suddenly by a power cut. Could this be relevant? Help please. Jon Sims

"My Mac was stopped suddenly by a power cut. Could this be relevant?"
    Sounds very relevant.
Do you have access to another computer with Numbers installed?
If so, do your files open properly on that computer?
If so, then the problem is your computer itself, which is best posted in a different forum.

The one thing it does not show is your noise margin. If you go to hub manager then troubleshooting then logs then you are looking for 2 lines when hub last connected to the internet which give your connection speed and noise margin. If you find them can you post
the drops in connevtion due to the power cuts have probably increased your noise margin resulting in a lower connection speed and therefore lower profile.  Your profile is correct for your current connection speed

  • Can I recover guest files if I didn't log out but only forced power cut

    Hello there
I have a MacBook Pro with mountain lion 10.8.3
I was using guest account and had my files on it then after a while my Mac became lagging and not responding. I left it for a while (> 6hours) And still it won't respond. The screen is black (after putting the screen down and up again) and sleep indicater is always on (not blinking) fans are still working. HDD is SSD I don't know about FileVault status but I didn't activate any encryption myself so if it isn't on by default I didn't later activate it.
I'm trying to see what my options are since I know files will be deleted if guest user logged off. But in my setuation, what are my options / chances of file recovery if I just forced power cut by long press on power button since this is my only path to go unless my laptop would magically come back to normal state.
I was thinking about force shutdown and then either target desk mode (would need to find another mac or see if genius will help)  or logging on to admin and either see if I can access guest folder from there or try recovery programs from admin account.
I have time machine set up for admin on an external hdd but don't know if it also backs up guest account. If it does would I be able to recover using time machine after logging on to fresh guest ?
    Thanks for your help

I don't have any option but to long press power button since my MacBook now is only functioning as a pizza warmer. My question is more about if the deletion sequence would be activated this way since technically I didn't log off yet.
If it is not deleted yet maybe I would say it will be deleted on either boot or logging in but not sure.
That is why I'm thinking about target desk mode
Files are on the internal drive and nothing is attached to my MBP.

  • Wifi does not switch on since a power cut. Is this hardware failure or can I reset something

My wifi will not switch on on my mini mac since there was a power cut.

Yes. It can not auto-sleep from the home screen with that feature enabled.

  • Power cut and now freeze mid start-up

    Help, help, help!!!
I had a power cut today and my mac obviously turned off!! When I try to re-start it it comes up with the apple pic and starting Mac OS X window and then goes to a blue screen and freezes. I have booted off the install disc and that worked - I ran disk utility / first aid and it came back with no problems on the hard disk. I haven't got enough room on the hard disk to re-install OS X (Im running 10.4.6 if that is relevant)??
Does anyone have any suggestions of what else I can try? I really need my beloved mac to be up and running!!!
    Many thanks in advance

Power hits can do crazy things to machines. It looks like you're stuck with trying out various things to see if they are the problem. So...
    1) Try pulling out all the RAM sticks but one (maybe a RAM stick got smoked).
    2) Try removing all external peripherals except for the mouse and keyboard.
    3) Try seeing if all your fans are running (cracking the case open before you turn on the machine can help). Some freezes happen due to overheating.

  • Picture flickers on and off after a power cut - seems locked

Just had a power cut in the street and when I turn my apple TV on now the home menus come up on the screen for 2 seconds then disappear for 5, then this repeats.
The remote won't scroll along although it seems to be paired but more concerened about why the flickering is occuring as I can't use the device.
    Any help?
    ATV2 on 4.4.4

Try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds, or resetting it using the reset option under general. You should also try restarting your router.

  • HT2810 Apple HD Cinema Display will not come back on after brief power cut.

My Apple HD cinema display won't come back after a brief power cut.
There is the little white power light on the front which pulses on three times and then extinguishes, repeatedly.
The Mac itself seems to power up although it's hard to tell if it's bboting properly, as I cannot see anything on the screen.
There is power going to both units so I have no idea what is happening.

This sounds like a very common problem.  If the blinks are one short, one longer, one short..... long pause... repeat.... start searching this forum.   There are also Youtube videos on solving it.  If this is the problem, the solution is easy.  You block both center pins on the 10 pin power connector.   Its crazy but it works.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2086442?start=30&tstart=0
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vodDfic8omA
I just used a very thin strip of paper folded in half and slipped into the display's connector so it covers ONLY the two center contacts, then slip it into the power module very carefully.  Make sure there is some slack in the paper as otherwise it will tear and the contact will still be made.  If it doesn't work at first, try again as the paper made have torn in process.   It would be better to use something stonger like a very thin strip of mylar.   Or you can do what the video shows, but I didn't try that exactly.

  • IMac won't turn on after power cut

When my iMac is unexpectedly turned off, ether at the wall or during a power cut, it won't then come back on immediately.  Sometimes it will come back on after an hour, sometimes after a couple of days.  Anyone know why this is? There is no logic to it. I've tried all the trouble shooting stuff; the resetting SMC for example. And I've got a surge protector. I've also taken it into an Apple store, a round trip of 3 hours, twice already over the past couple of months.  But after doing some diagnostic tests on it they can find nothing wrong.  Also, when they go to turn it on, it fires up immediately.  I was told that unless they experience the problem themselves they can't do anything.  Which means I'm forever taking it in to them, during this problem, on the off chance it may still be a problem when I get there.  It's very infuriating. Help!!!

Great advice.  And I'll definitely do that - need to get my Mac back on and working before that however.

  • Power cut / itunes update leads to itunes memory loss :-(

I am running a mac mini only 6 months old with 2.5ghz intel I5 Core.
Where i live we suffer many power cuts. Everything was working fine with itunes, but now itunes is having real issues with locating many of my files.
I have around 260gb in music altogether, and after using itunes for many years, i have spent a lot of time making smart playlists to organise everything just the way i like it. All my favourite songs i have spent time giving them 5 star ratings so Itunes knows to put them in the "My Top Rated" smart folder.
I keep my music on an external 1Tb hard drive. Itunes knows where the folder is located via preference settings.
After a recent spurt of power cuts, followed by an unrelated external had drive failure (only movies), i went back to my mac and discovered that around 30% of my music was missing. This was indicated by small exclamation marks placed just to the left of the individual track names in itunes.
Off course, the first thing i did was panic, but my fears were soon put to rest, when i checked the master file on my extrenal hard drive where the itunes folder is located, the files were still there.
When i try to play the selected file, the message :- " the song "______" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
i have 2 main issues here:-
    1. Itunes will only let you locate individual files at a time, if i have to locate 30% of 260gb, i will still be till next year.
    2. when i follow the option to locate, find the file and click open, Itunes crashes after hanging some time.
I can dump all itunes indexing files and copy my master itunes file (all 260gb) onto another drive, then delete itunes application and reinstall, but i will loose all my playlists and 5 star ratings. I am also concerne about song degradation which can happen when copying files. I have many Flac converted files which are 320kbps.
I have read on the apple.com itunes windows forum that there is a script to locate missing files, is there a similair method for mac?
Is there another method for Itunes to reindex the complete folder where the music is located without loosing smart playlists and 5 star ratings?
    Any help appreciated.

If iTunes is busy saving the library file (which it does frequently) and there is power loss then the file can become corrupt.  This can cause links to be broken, and if the library file is corrupt enough it will cause iTunes to freeze.
Your solution is to back up your library (especially the library.itl) frequently so you have good copy from which to start, and buy a power source backup.  The other things about which you are asking are not real long-term solutions giving the conditions you describe.
There isn't any script for repairing links on Mac. You can check Dougscripts web site.  There was one there but it wasn't highly successful from my reading of it.  iTunes itself has a minor repair links feature built into it whereby if you find one link it will ask if you want to try to find others based on the same criteria.  If that isn't working then that's as far as it goes.
I'm not too clear what you mean about song degradation in copying files. Yes, any file copying can theoretically cause error, but there are also error checking routines.  Still, even just leaving files on a drive can cause errors as sectors suddenly go bad.
The main problem you have is computers are not designed to survive frequent abrupt shutdown.  Macs aren't too bad and last night we had a sudden shutdown twice and my computer started up fine both times (hats off the Apple). You need to deal with that problem and your iTunes will not corrupt as frequently.  I have been using my library since the early 2000s and never once had it go corrupt on me.

  • Power Cut now Don't have Ownership of TM

I had a power cut last night and since starting up I've lost ownership of my Time Machine USB HDD and I don't know how to get ownership again. I've checked the get-info menu on the drive but theres no box to get ownership and DU doesn't have an option either.
How do I get ownership again?
    Thanks

Like I said, there are no permissions to repair on a TM volume because it's not a system disk. You're right though, there's no *ignore ownership* box on a TM volume, only a standard HD volume or partition will have that. If not being able to repair permissions of your TM volume with DU is causing you to think you aren't the owner then you've nothing to worry about. You are.

  • Re: Creative Gigaworks T3 Power Cutting Out AS WELL!!!!!

This is a response to the same fault on the gigaworks T3 as mentioned in this post here : http://forums.creative.com/t5/Speaker-Systems/Creative-Gigaworks-5--G550W-Power-Cutting-Out/td-p/430593?
hi! I am from New Zealand. I?just purchased?a set of Creative Gigaworks T3 for just DAY(the first day)! and I am encounter the same kind of problem mentioned in this post/topic . it Shuts off by itself or (power cutting out) . most probably would be the overheating cut off problem as well , all symptoms are the same as described this this post!
I cannot believe this is happening to the whole line of Gigaworks subwoofered speaker systems. I also have the Gigaworks T40 SII and are working mint. but seems like the subwoofered ones are the ones with this overheating cut off problem!!!!!
Man I trusted Creative for its quality of its products as I have always been Ultra impressed for the Creative Cambridge FPS2000 which I had own for the last 10 years until the remote switch became faulty 2 years ago (volume fluctuates), but thats acceptable for so many years of use!! they were the best ones and love them!?
BUT? I dunno about these current line of Gigaworks systems. they all seem to be faulty with this problem
do you think I should get a replacement or just get a refund IF I CAN.
a replacement might do the same thing?
    cheers !!
    ken

here is an update of what happened to my faulty Creative Gigaworks T3 system.
I returned it the next day the shop opened back from new years which is the Jan 4th, 2010 . I told them about the problem I was having and also printed out the dicussion from this forum on the Gigaworks G550W http://forums.creative.com/t5/Speaker-Systems/Creative-Gigaworks-5--G550W-Power-Cutting-Out/td-p/430593 . which I told them was the very same problems as discussed here and seems to be like a common fault or design problem of the gigaworks (subwoofered) series from creative!!
I was treated in a very bad and unhelpful manner from the store. and straight up. there is no refund!. and they seem to think I was lying about all this and making it up trying to get a refund ?!!
wtf I came all the way back (50km retrurn) waste my valueable time waste gas to muck about na I don't think so!? but to them I was a lier which had nothing better to do. " they say , you say its faulty, but We don't know" and they said , if the supplier say can refund then we will definitly refund... or even we test it out have problem, the supplier will have to test it again to confirm if there is a problem then to see if they will repair or replace. of course I wanted a refund as this a design problem and will happen again shortly!!! I had no choice but to leave it there , so I left it there on the 4th. anyway I was treated the worse I've ever been treated for any purchase at a store
week later. TODAY the 12th Jan. I received a txt message saying " this is xp computer warehouse, just 2 let u know ur creative speakers has been returned from the distributor as no fault to be found, n its ready 4 pick up "
of course there was no fault if it was tested for 5 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!! its the overheating problem after being used for over 2 hours or so. but I'm sure they know about this hard,. how can they not know if its happening all the time. they just can't be bothered, they would of just said "ah f--- it!!"
So i'm going back on sunday 24th Jan to get a refund as they have failed to meet the Repair/Replace or refund policy, if nothing works out then the last thing (which I really do not wish to do) it to Disputes Tribunal at the courts , a bloody hassle and a waste of f----- time! seriously. if creative would just sort it out or even open and fix it I'd be a really happy customer!
but for things that are going now , its definitly not right!
think about it before buying your Creative Gigaworks T3, just sharing my personal experience here , and it ain't good!
I'll keep you updated on sundays results.
    what a pain
