Power cuts out / charging seems strange.

Hi.
(Originally in the battery forum, but I am posting here on the basis that more people read it here)
The background:
1.25 factory spec Pb. It went away for a screen and keyboard replacement. When it came back the documentation said that they had replaced the heatsink as well. I didn't realize anything was wrong with the previous one, but I assume that they are not going to replace a part unless there was a problem, so fair enough. Pb came back and I installed Tiger. It was a clean install and went well. No problems. Very pleased with the results. No problems with the computer at all. However, I have noticed something that is giving cause to concern.
The issue: I use the computer whilst charging, i.e. the ring goes green and I then continue to use it whilst the power is still on. However after a couple of hours, the light on the cable (green/amber ring) goes out despite everything being connected i.e the computer starts to run on the battery. I unplug the cable from the computer. Plug it back in, still no light. I turn the power off at the wall, and then turn it on (without unplugging the cable from the computer), and it works/ starts to charge as normal.
My battery is fine (holds a charge well/ less than 100 cycles). The computer is no hotter than normal/ is not doing anthing that it has not done for two years now. The AC adapter is in good condition/ does not get any hotter than it has every done. There is no buzzing.
Any ideas? Is it the inverter / AC adapter? Is it something more serious? The fact that once I kill the power to the AC adapter then turn it on and it works suggests it is the block on the power cord (the white brick with the apple on it).
Should also add, that Apple Hardware test (extended) came back fine. Also reset PRAM and PMU. As of yet there has been no repeat of the problem.
However, today there was a development, hence the new posting. Computer was displaying about 8% charge left. I switched everything off and plugged in my charger. The ring went green about 45 minutes later. I thought this was a bit strange, so I started the machine up. On startup the meter was displaying 54%. When I clicked on the battery icon in the status bar it was saying calculating until full (It clearly isn't full at 54%). I unplugged the cable plugged it back in and it when amber and is currently charging.
Something is wrong here. Could the inverter have anything to do with it or is it my power brick. Either way, I am getting quite concerned now. Any help would be appreciated.

The PMU reset was the right thing to do for the original problem. Just to help you rule out some possibilities on the new issue, and to help you avoid having to send your machine back in to the shop:
I'm tempted to think that it's the adapter, as well. They aren't the most robust accessory. I had to replace mine a few months ago. If you are able to get hold of a newish adapter, use it and see if the problem recurs.
Check your battery's capacity with this freeware app: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27425
Also, consider moving the file, com.apple.menuextra.battery.plist (in ~Library/Preferences) to your Desktop, then log out and back in again or restart.

This is a response to the same fault on the gigaworks T3 as mentioned in this post here : http://forums.creative.com/t5/Speaker-Systems/Creative-Gigaworks-5--G550W-Power-Cutting-Out/td-p/430593?
hi! I am from New Zealand. I?just purchased?a set of Creative Gigaworks T3 for just DAY(the first day)! and I am encounter the same kind of problem mentioned in this post/topic . it Shuts off by itself or (power cutting out) . most probably would be the overheating cut off problem as well , all symptoms are the same as described this this post!
I cannot believe this is happening to the whole line of Gigaworks subwoofered speaker systems. I also have the Gigaworks T40 SII and are working mint. but seems like the subwoofered ones are the ones with this overheating cut off problem!!!!!
Man I trusted Creative for its quality of its products as I have always been Ultra impressed for the Creative Cambridge FPS2000 which I had own for the last 10 years until the remote switch became faulty 2 years ago (volume fluctuates), but thats acceptable for so many years of use!! they were the best ones and love them!?
BUT? I dunno about these current line of Gigaworks systems. they all seem to be faulty with this problem
do you think I should get a replacement or just get a refund IF I CAN.
a replacement might do the same thing?
    cheers !!
    ken

here is an update of what happened to my faulty Creative Gigaworks T3 system.
I returned it the next day the shop opened back from new years which is the Jan 4th, 2010 . I told them about the problem I was having and also printed out the dicussion from this forum on the Gigaworks G550W http://forums.creative.com/t5/Speaker-Systems/Creative-Gigaworks-5--G550W-Power-Cutting-Out/td-p/430593 . which I told them was the very same problems as discussed here and seems to be like a common fault or design problem of the gigaworks (subwoofered) series from creative!!
I was treated in a very bad and unhelpful manner from the store. and straight up. there is no refund!. and they seem to think I was lying about all this and making it up trying to get a refund ?!!
wtf I came all the way back (50km retrurn) waste my valueable time waste gas to muck about na I don't think so!? but to them I was a lier which had nothing better to do. " they say , you say its faulty, but We don't know" and they said , if the supplier say can refund then we will definitly refund... or even we test it out have problem, the supplier will have to test it again to confirm if there is a problem then to see if they will repair or replace. of course I wanted a refund as this a design problem and will happen again shortly!!! I had no choice but to leave it there , so I left it there on the 4th. anyway I was treated the worse I've ever been treated for any purchase at a store
week later. TODAY the 12th Jan. I received a txt message saying " this is xp computer warehouse, just 2 let u know ur creative speakers has been returned from the distributor as no fault to be found, n its ready 4 pick up "
of course there was no fault if it was tested for 5 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!! its the overheating problem after being used for over 2 hours or so. but I'm sure they know about this hard,. how can they not know if its happening all the time. they just can't be bothered, they would of just said "ah f--- it!!"
So i'm going back on sunday 24th Jan to get a refund as they have failed to meet the Repair/Replace or refund policy, if nothing works out then the last thing (which I really do not wish to do) it to Disputes Tribunal at the courts , a bloody hassle and a waste of f----- time! seriously. if creative would just sort it out or even open and fix it I'd be a really happy customer!
but for things that are going now , its definitly not right!
think about it before buying your Creative Gigaworks T3, just sharing my personal experience here , and it ain't good!
I'll keep you updated on sundays results.
    what a pain

  • [Other 865 Series] 865GM2-LS - power cuts out immediately after turning on.

I wonder if anyone could help me, as I am a bit out of ideas. I've done a search on this forum, and though there are a few people similar problems, there does not seem to be an answer.
I have basically tried to build a PC from scratch for the first time (the specs are below) I'm pretty sure it is all connected up correctly, yet when I turn it on, the lights come on and the fan turns for a fraction of a second and then the power cuts out.
If I then attempt to turn it on again I get no power at all. If I disconnect/reconnect the power supply from the motherboard and try again I get the lights and fan again for a split second.
I have checked and double check the connections, reset the CMOS by moving the jumper as in the manual, and I am pretty much out of ideas. These are completely new components, no s/w on the HD at all etc. I've checked the pins for the ATX 20-Pin and ATX 12V and they seem OK. One thing I can think of is there is a power connecter next to the one for the CPU fan for the system fan. I do not have this connected to anything as the fan that comes with the case connects directly to the PSU. Do I need a system fan as well or is this an either or thing?

My fault, wasn't thinking. I meant to type "try running the motherboard outside of the case".
You need to try a better PSU than your current one so the one from your old computer may be no good. Post its +3.3V +5V +12V rail amp values please.
Also try disconnecting all but the essential hardware need to run so unplug hard drive, floppy etc. The problem looks like the power supply to me so buy or borrow a decent one with 20-24A minimum on the +12V rail. If you need help finding a power supply just ask.
That would be very much appreciated, I've had a look around the usual web suppliers and they don't seem to want to provide that kind of information for their PSUs.
The old PSU doesn't seem to have the info printed on it, but it is quite old, so I suppose it's unlikely it's going to be much better than the new one.
Will try running it outside from the case. I take it this is in case the thing I have mounted it to is shorting it? If this is the case, is there a trick to ensuring against this?

make sure no OC settings are used and set DDR voltage to 2.60-2.70 to get sys stable and work down as needed.
How do I do this? Pretty sure I have no OC settings as I have left all jumpers alone apart from the CMOS one. How would I set the DDR voltage?

  • Sudden power cut out when battery is not fully depleted?

My MacBook Pro is misbehaving - when running on battery it will spontaneously cut out as if someone has yanked the battery out - no warning. Its doing this seemingly unrelated to how much power is left, and gives no warning messages at all. Any ideas?

Your battery may need calibration.  (The battery may be empty before it is recognized as being empty.)  Try this:

  • Sudden Power Cut Out on iMac G5

    Hello team,
My iMac G5 (1st gen, 20") just did something odd -- while I was checking my e-mail, its power just cut out suddenly and the machine went dark. I was able to restart it just fine, but obviously something's amiss here. I checked to make sure the power strip I've got it plugged into wasn't loose (it wasn't) and that all the other connections were fine (they were), and now I'm turning to you for suggestions/ideas. This has happened once before a while back, but I didn't worry about it at first because that was the only time. However, now that it's done the exact same thing again, I figure it's time to do a bit of investigating. Might this be a symptom of the power issues that some first generation iMac G5s have experienced? Or perhaps something else? Thanks very much in advance for your input on this!
    Electronically yours,
    Erik
    20" iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Yep, just one of the tricks the first generation iMac G5s like to pull. Mine did same thing before I finally had it replaced a year , and 5 major repairs after I got it. What was failing on mine when it turned itself off randomly was the Motherboard having been fried from extreme heat. ( So Applecare folks told me.)
The main prob with both the Rev A and B iMac G5s was and is that they generate more heat than they can dissapate. Its been corrected on Rev C and Intel iMacs since they COMPLETELY redid the internal placement of everything on them and even added a much needed vent right behind where the hard drive sits(Behind the arm) and next to where the fans can draw in more cool air from outside the machine. Anyway, what youre experiencing unfortuneatly isnt isolated for most of us ex or current Rev A iMac G5 owners. Very common and if youre able to , get out from under the computer if you can. They are highly flawed imo.The fact that they redid it so much tells me anyway that it was flawed. The Rev Cs are perfect and everything the A and Bs were not. Cool running, stable, quiet, and add all the extras like HD space, Vram, extra and faster ram, and the iSight, for me, made all the agrivated trips to the Apple store worth it. Even though it was and is over 50 miles from my home.
Good luck, let us know what you find out is happening. And seriously, do yourself a favour, if you can have it replaced.

  • Satellite A100-259 power cuts out

    Hi,
I've had my A100-259 for 3 and half years, had no problems (apart from I knackered the battery a couple of years ago and have been using mains power since).
I switch it on get so far, and then the power just cuts out, and the LED lights go out as though there's no power running to it.
I unplug and leave it for a while, and then when I connect power to it, the lights come on and I can switch it on, but then it loses power again. I've removed the battery and tried, but still happens.
    Any ideas/ solutions greatly appreciated : )

    Hi
Well, for me it sounds like that its a hardware problem, Maybe the mainboard or something else.
Just one question: You are using original Toshiba AC/DC adaptor or another one?
In your case I would contact an authorized service provider. The technicians should check your notebook and tell you what is causing this. I think this would be the easiest way to repair the notebook.
    Bye

  • Power cuts out on start up

My laptop was fine last night, but after trying to boot it up this morning it appears to be close to deaths door.
It's an old Powerbook G4 (15" aluminum), so I know it's probably on it's last legs anyway.
Connecting the power supply is met with the orange 'charging' light around the connection.
Initially this is green, then it switches to orange.
The light indicators on the battery show that there is little or no power in there at all.
The grey start up screen appears, with the loading wheel beneath it. It then suddenly looses all power – as if you've pulled the ac supply.
I've tried booting up without the battery in (power supply only), but all I get is the sound of the fans working – nothing else.
Tried booting up as a firewire device as well, which initially worked, but this eventually bombed out too.
I'm going to try PRAM and taking the ram chip out and cleaning it tonight.
    Other than that any ideas?
Typically, I really need to get some files off it.
    Thanks in advance.
    Terry

    Thanks for your help.
Tried charging the battery last night, but no luck there.
Tried resetting the PMU and initially this worked. The mac started up fine.
Unfortunately it bombed out before I could copy any files across though.
It now doesn't even get to the start-up screen before bombing out.
You hear the chime (usually), but then the screen goes, if it turns on at all.
I've tried PRAM, and holding shift down, but it doesn't seem to get far enough for these to kick in.
I've had problems with the USB ports over the last few months.
I thought this was unrelated, but from what I can read it could be the motherboard playing up, and if so it would account for both of these things happening.
Thanks for your help though, I really appreciate it.

  • H515 Desktop Monitor Power cuts out

Help Please. I have an H515 desktop. After a period of inactivity the power will go off to my monitor. The CPU is still on but I can't get the monitor on. All my power settings are set to never turn off the display. I am running Windows 8.1. I've tried multiple monitors and I've changed out the monitor cables. No luck
    Any thoughts?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
Have you tried booting the computer into Windows Safe Mode to see if the inactivity causes the monitor to black out ?  I'm not sure if Safe Mode will totally by-pass Windows Power Management, but it is worth a try.  If the monitor stays on then I would suspect a power setting or driver problem with Windows.  The link below is for a little tutorial on booting Windows 8.1 into Safe Mode if needed.  Step #2 is probably the easiest.
    http://www.7tutorials.com/5-ways-boot-safe-mode-windows-8-windows-81
Have you tried booting into the BIOS Setup and see if inactivity blacks out the monitor ?  You can boot into the BIOS Setup on your model by shutting the computer completely off then press and hold the F1 key when powering it back on.  When you see the BIOS screen then release the F1 key.  This would be the true test to see if your black out problem is a hardware issue since the operating system isn't loaded.

  • Homehub 3 power cut out

Hi I'm setting up homehub 3.  The power light is blue as is the wireless light.  The broadband light is flashing orange and purple as it searches for the signal.  Then the homehub just turns itself off.  I'm able to turn it back on using the power switch and the whole process repeats itself.
I'm assuming it's a faulty homehub and I'll have to order a new one but if anyone has any suggestions before I do that, that'd be great

The flashing amber BB light is normal
Based on experience, no lights should ever display the dreaded purple lights - (combination of amber and blue)
As Dave advised, double check that you've not double filtered the BB connection and check the other sockets.
If possible, try the hub (plus filter) directly into the test point.
If it's still flashing amber and purple, I'd have to say that you're a proud owner of a bricked HH3
(I've only ever written a faulty HH3 once before, didn't think I'd be writing it again)

Hi, I am using Logic 7.2.3 on an Intel Mac with 2 gigs RAM. I am having a problem with audio cutting out both during playback and bounces. This occurs whether or not my Mackie Onyx 400F is switched on. I work with a lot of midi instruments, and the frequency of the audio cutting out does seem to increase when I have more instruments. Do I just need more RAM, or is there something else I should do to solve the problem?

  • Dropped MacBook Pro i5 Mid 2012 Fan tries to spin but cuts out, Battery Charging Indicator light showing but cuts out

    Good evening,
A few weeks ago i dropped my MacBook Pro (i5 Mid 2012) and it failed to turn on, battery had charge in it at the time.
When i press the power button nothing happens. I have also tried resetting the SMC, nothing happens.
Next i plugged in the mag safe charger, before i pressed the power button i saw the charging light come on for a second then cut out.
If i press the power buttong, nothing happens.
I opened the back of the machine and tried the above steps again to see what happened.
    1. When i press the power button nothing happens.
    2. When i plugged in the mag safe charger, before ti pressed the power button i see the fan starts to spin for maybe 2 seconds then stops. I hear the hard drive start to spin but that also stops at the same time, during this the front batter charging indicator light also illuminates, but also cuts out.
Its like when you attach the charger it wants to do something but stops everything after 2 seconds. I left it plugged in for maybe 1 min and its just repeated this action maybe 20 times.
At no stage when i press the power buttong, plugged in or not does it react.
I have taken out the hard drive and plugged into another manchine as an external drive and it works perfectly. Hard drive is no problem! From what i can see all connections are ok, and appear to be plugged in correctly, no burn marks or damage visible.
    Logic board failure from impact?
    Thanks,

CCan somebody help me my iPhone 5 keeps cutting out when still got charge left in it it is two years old also lose signal a lot help please

Depending on the age of the phone and its usage, this could be battery issue and your battery might have to be replaced. If the phone is still charging with your fathers USB cable, make sure it is charged for at least 15min, then try to connect in recovery mode, explained here:
iOS: Unable to update or restore
If this does not work, you'll have to get it checked out by visiting an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Provider next to your place or by contacting Apple directly: Apple - Support - Service Answer Center
