Power Down needed for adding extra disk

I have a sun netra 240 which currently has one 72GB disk,
I am adding an extra 72GB disk, my question is do I need
to power down the server to insert the new disk or can I
insert it while power is on ????

You do not need to power the server off to insert the new disk, this can be done live. The only thing you might have to do is run devfsadm after inserting the disk.

  • Need for multiple ASM disk groups on a SAN with RAID5??

    Hello all,
    I've successfully installed clusterware, and ASM on a 5 node system. I'm trying to use asmca (11Gr2 on RHEL5)....to configure the disk groups.
    I have a SAN, which actually was previously used for a 10G ASM RAC setup...so, reusing the candidate volumes that ASM has found.
    I had noticed on the previous incarnation....that several disk groups had been created, for example:
    ASMCMD> ls
    DATADG/
    INDEXDG/
    LOGDG1/
    LOGDG2/
    LOGDG3/
    LOGDG4/
    RECOVERYDG/
    Now....this is all on a SAN....which basically has two pools of drives set up each in a RAID5 configuration. Pool 1 contains ASM volumes named ASM1 - ASM32. Each of these logical volumes is about 65 GB.
    Pool #2...has ASM33 - ASM48 volumes....each of which is about 16GB in size.
    I used ASM33 from pool#2...by itself to contain my cluster voting disk and OCR.
    My question is....with this type setup...would doing so many disk groups as listed above really do any good for performance? I was thinking with all of this on a SAN, which logical volumes on top of a couple sets of RAID5 disks...the divisions on the disk group level with external redundancy would do anything?
    I was thinking of starting with about half of the ASM1-ASM31 'disks'...to create one large DATADG disk group, which would house all of the database instances data, indexes....etc. I'd keep the remaining large candidate disks as needed for later growth.
    I was going to start with the pool of the smaller disks (except the 1 already dedicated to cluster needs) to basically serve as a decently sized RECOVERYDG...to house logs, flashback area...etc. It appears this pool is separate from pool #1...so, possibly some speed benefits there.
    But really...is there any need to separate the diskgroups, based on a SAN with two pools of RAID5 logical volumes?
    If so, can someone give me some ideas why...links on this info...etc.
    Thank you in advance,
    cayenne

    The best practice is to use 2 disk groups, one for data and the other for the flash/fast recovery area. There really is no need to have a disk group for each type of file, in fact the more disks in a disk group (to a point I've seen) the better for performance and space management. However, there are times when multiple disk groups are appropriate (not saying this is one of them only FYI), such as backup/recovery and life cycle management. Typically you will still get benefit from double stripping, i.e. having a SAN with RAID groups presenting multiple LUNs to ASM, and then having ASM use those LUNs in disk groups. I saw this in my own testing. Start off with a minimum of 4 LUNs per disk group, and add in pairs as this will provide optimal performance (at least it did in my testing). You should also have a set of standard LUN sizes to present to ASM so things are consistent across your enterprise, the sizing is typically done based on your database size. For example:
    300GB LUN: database > 10TB
    150GB LUN: database 1TB to 10 TB
    50GB LUN: database < 1TB
    As databases grow beyond the threshold the larger LUNs are swapped in and the previous ones are swapped out. With thin provisioning it is a little different since you only need to resize the ASM LUNs. I'd also recommend having at least 2 of each standard sized LUNs ready to go in case you need space in an emergency. Even with capacity management you never know when something just consumes space too quickly.
    ASM is all about space savings, performance, and management :-).
    Hope this helps.

  • Extra power cable needed for a SATA drive in a G4 AGP "Sawtooth"?

    If one adds a SATA controller card and a SATA hard drive to a G4 AGP "Sawtooth", will a power cable like the one at the below link be needed, or would the necessary power cabling ordinarily come with the drive?
    [http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Micro%20Accessories/SATAPAY>
    -John

    Thanks for the additional information, japamac.
    That would be Left (or right angle 270º) for the data cable.
    Which of the below data cables would be more appropriate, the 18" long one or the 39" long one?
    [http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Micro%20Accessories/SATA18L>
    [http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Micro%20Accessories/SATA39L>
    Power connectors would be a left angle 90º to get wires going up.
    I found the below two (the first is the same one linked near the top of this thread):
    [http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Micro%20Accessories/SATAPAY>
    [http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Micro%20Accessories/SATAPA>
    Is it okay to have one of the ends of a "Y" cable remain unconnected? I've done that with my existing ATA power cables, but I wanted make sure that that is also okay with the SATA power cables.

  • Requirement For Adding Extra page in Final Report

    Hi,
    I am generating a marketing report for the customer. All these reports will be 3-4 pages with last page.
    For certain type of marketing code I need to add a last page for customer approval with some notes.I can not have it as a last page in the same flow as it may not print summary on last page.
    How can I add extra page at the end of report based on conditions.
    Regards
    -Ashutosh

    You may create the last page as subtemplate and call it conditionally. Like
    <?template:lastpage?>
    All thee last page stuff goes here
    <?end template?>
    <?if: condition_to_have_the_last_page?>
    <?call:lastpage?>
    <?end if?>

  • Power supply needed for MS-7220 (Diamond Plus) and others.

    The following statement is taken form the K8B Diamond Plus Manual.
    For ATX 12V power connection, it should be greater than 18A.
    If I am interpreting correctly, the ATX 12V connector should have dedicated to it a minimum of 18A.
    My first, question is if the Power Supply has two or more rails, how do you know the power dedicated to the ATX 12 connector on the Power Supply?
    Second, if a +12V rail is not dedicated the connector, how do you know what is connected to each rail of the Power Supply?
    This maybe the source of why many are saying, they have more stable system performance when using single rail Power Supplies.
    I have tried eleven different manufactures to get more detailed Power Supply specifications, but no responses; today through February 1st is the Chinese New Year.
    Those of you running the K8B Diamond Plus, what are you using for Power Supplies and are you having any instability problem?
    One thing I did find curious was that going the manuals and in most all of the newer Socket 939 motherboards have this specification, but nothing in the motherboards specifications of on the MSI Web Site about this required and the are a lot of 500-600 Watt power supplies sold that do not meet this specification.
    The statement Total Wattage does not mean a thing has even more meaning to me now.
    Are we going to have to know the Current Rating of each cable on the output of a Power Supply now to insure we are purchasing the correct Power Supply?
    Roger

    Roger
    Ihave a Tagan 580w U22 with switchable dual/combined +12v rails and it is very stable,set it combined for 35a.
    Only thing to ponder was the 4/8 pin +12v/p4 connector,power supply has the correct split 2x4pin connectors so does the board but there is a little removable cover over 4 pins,so thinking MSI fitted it there for a reason I have fitted only one 4 pin connector,no problems as yet.
    Think you may well have a point re the 18a.
    I have just given my son my old sli platinum/cpu/heatsink/ram/vga card,this setup ran  250/11/4 @ 1.4v & ram 2.5 3 3 7 1.1 @ 2.75v with the Tagan.this setup now fitted in his case but with a dual 18a rail Enermax and he can't o/c stable to the old settings.Case has better cooling than the wavemaster it all came from.
    Dont think the enermax is bad just that it supplies the power a different way.

  • Power down iMac for a few months....

    I'm going to be doing some traveling without my 24-inch iMac.
    It will be necessary for me to leave it unused for two or possibly three months.
    I do not want to prematurely drain the little 3.6-volt Pram battery because it appears that with these new iMacs replacing this battery would require a trip to the nearest Apple Authorized service depot for complete dis-assembly and re-assembly of the computer.
    Should I just unplug it or leave it on but asleep ?
    M

    Entirely up to you. If I were you, I would put it to sleep. If I remember correctly, the battery on the logic board that you speak of is only drained when the computer is off. If electricity is not an issue, I'd leave it on but in sleep mode. If you leave it off, you will drain the battery - How much, I'm not sure. I have had PC batteries in mother boards which have not been used for years test good, so again, not sure how much drain you're looking at.
    If you decide to leave it on but sleeping, I highly recommend your Mac be hooked up to a UPS in case of any power failures.
    Good luck.

  • How to Locate Drop Down Menu for Adding Password to Website

    When I add my password information to a new website after site accepts the same, all is well. However, on frequent occasions I have wanted to change the password manually, or, perhaps there was some delay or flub and the finished password does not get saved for easy access to the website because the drop down or pop-up box asking if I want to save the password is gone too soon, and I don't know where it is situated in order to navigate to it to make changes manually.
    I hope I have not confused this issue for reads here, as I don't actually know what the function is called other than to phonetically call it the save and remember password function. Thanks in advance.

  • Javascript needed for adding filenames to MULITPLE pdfs - thanks

    Hi there,
    Im familiar with batch processing and i’ve found some information on the filenames, but I cant really get this to work. I have multiple PDFs and i’d like to add the file name of each PDF to the bottom of each page for our printer. I know this requires javascript, and so far the only code that i was able to get work, was an actually javascript file that i inserted into the adobe folder creating a new button to “print with file name” this was great, but didn’t help with my batch of files.
    Thank you.

    And what code are you using?
    The code beside adding the button should have code to add a filed to the PDF pages and add the 'WillPrint" action. I have found some of this code is best done by using a function to perform the adding of a field and setting the will print action.

  • Urgent need for Adding Comments

    Hai,
    I have to add a comment before the root node dynamically.
    I am adding a comment dynamically by using the following code.
    //Getting the docuement.
    DocumentBuilderFactory dbf = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
    DocumentBuilder db = dbf.newDocumentBuilder();
    Document doc = db.parse("cd.xml");
    //Getting the root element
    Element rootElement = doc.getDocumentElement();
    //creating the comment.
    Comment comment = doc.createComment("A Document Comment");
    //Adding comment before the root element.
    rootElement.getParentNode().insertBefore(comment,rootElement);
    //Transforming in to the xml file.
    DOMSource ds = new DOMSource(rootElement);
    StreamResult sr = new StreamResult(new java.io.File("cd.xml"));
    TransformerFactory tFactory = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
    Transformer trans = tFactory.newTransformer();
    trans.transform(ds,sr);
    Program is compiling and running sucessfully. But it is not getting added into the result XML File.

    Document doc = db.parse("cd.xml");
    //Getting the root element
    Element rootElement = doc.getDocumentElement();
    //Transforming in to the xml file.
    DOMSource ds = new DOMSource(rootElement);...
    trans.transform(ds,sr);The node you are using as parameter of the DOMSource constructor is the rootElement. The comment you insert before that element is, of course, before the rootElement object, so the DOMSource object should be created with the comment node as the constructor's input parameter.

  • Lost original disks-will buying Tiger solve the need for them?

    I have lost the original disks for my iMac Flatscreen. Now I need to re-install the system so that I can get the computer to start up again.
    1. Will brand new Tiger disks solve my need for the original disks?
    2. My husband & I have owned probably 20 Macintoshes over the years and we have many sets of original disks on the shelves. Perhaps my lost ones are mingled in there. But how do I tell which ones go with the iMac Flatscreen? Neither the disks nor the packaging indicates what computer they go with. Is there some sort of code I can refer to?

    Welcome to Apple discussions.
    I have lost the original disks for my iMac
    Flatscreen. Now I need to re-install the system so
    that I can get the computer to start up again.
    1. Will brand new Tiger disks solve my need for the
    original disks?
    A retail version of OS X (10.4) will install the operating system without problem. If you go that route, I suggest wiping the HD first - although an erase and install will do that as well (overkill, I suppose).

    I have a G4 (flat panel). My original software came on two DVDs - gray in color and labeled iMac Software install (1 of 2 and 2 of 2). My G5 software install DVD has "G5" on it.

    OS X 10.4 (Tiger) will certainly run non-Intel applications. I have not run OS 9 for years, but I understand that OS 9 applications will run under OS X 10.4 (see this knowledge base article):

  • Can anyone tell me the mAh needed for the iPhone 5?

    I am looking to purchase an Emergency USB cell phone charger and want to make sure there is enough power (but not too much) in the device.  I can't seem to find the answer yet???  I purchased one and it did not say anything about how much power it has but it did say it will work with the iPhone 5.  I should know better than to believe something that an after-market manufacturer posted but I was hopeful.  It worked from 0 battery to 12% and then said "not compatible with this phone" (or something like that).
    I am not knowledgeable about power, iPhones, horse training and many other things , but I hope to learn on this forum since I just bought my first iPhone and am trying to figure all this out.  I need to be able to carry a power source with me when I am away from electrical outlets and such.
    Any input is mucho appreciatedo!   Thanks!

    Thanks Peter, but what I am looking for is something like http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Battery-Powered-Emergency-Flashlight/dp/B003ZUPDR 2.  I would like an external pack that takes batteries and can be quickly used to recharge my iPhone 5.  There are a lot of them like this one on the market but I need to figure out the power specifics needed for the iPhone 5.  I will also be buying these for gifts for about 45 people for an event this summer so I am doing the testing with my iPhone and hoping to find something like this.

  • Eject/Power Down Hard Disk

    In Mac Pro, Leopard, after boot, I right click the Internal HD for Windows desktop Icon, selecting Eject and can hear it winding down.
    In Mac Pro, Windows 7, Computer Management->"Disk Management", Internal Disk 0 is Windows Drive with Vista & Windows 7 OS's. Internal Disk 1 is Mac OS X - Leopard which I've set offline via right click.
    In "Device Manager" I've disabled ATA Channel 1 Controllers and Drive for Disk 1. After reboot, I no longer see Disk 1 in "Disk Management".
    My question: is Drive 1 still needlessly powered up & spinning? With Mac Pro side panel off no lights I see indicate either drive to be operating, vibration seem same for both to the touch.

    Further information after no response on this in either Windows 7 or Mac Bootcamp Forums:
    in Mac Leopard side of Mac Pro, iStat widget, recommended by Apple, powers up the ejected drive to display among other useful information, the drive temperature of 99-101 while Mac drive is at 88 degrees.
    My wish in submitting here is to find out how to power down an internal drive that is not in use in the active Operating System, to conserve power usage and maybe prolong computer/drive life span.
    If this was an IBM mainframe and I needed to access data written beyond end of file due to IBM software error, I could do it with Assembler & XDAP Macro, or, more urgent, if the VTOC of a Drive was damaged making it inaccessible, I could use Superzap to fix that. I could probably say how to power down a disk drive without pushing the device power down button if, in that scenario, I had ever had to do so before.
    Surely this not an impossible thing to do in a Microsoft OS.
    Mainly posted for Windows 7 feedback. If I get an answer, will post here for anyone in the same boat.

  • Adding a characteristics to AR Drill down report for line items

    I have raised an OSS note on this, but they deem this to be consulting.
    I have an AR drill down report for line items
    It calls the structure RFRRD20.
    I need to add a value into the characteristics so I can use it in the drill down report.
    I have appended the structure, added a value in TKAF for the field, and it still does not show.
    Has anybody done something similar?
    I am sure this is easy, but only when you know how, so if you know how to do it please can you let me know.
    thanks
    Mark

    Hi Mark
        I am also in the same situation where i need to add two characteristics (invoice date, due date) to the AR drill down reports. I added them to the structure and TKAF table as you did, but still could not get them to the drill down reports (FDI5 or FI1).
       From your posts, i see that SAP's response was that it is not possible to add characteristics to AR drilldown reports? Did they mention any reasons or OSS notes? How did you handle your requirement, were you able to work around?
       Your suggestions would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks

    My iPod touch 4 generation 32gb sometimes is really slow.When ever my iPod is being slow and I get on an app the app will shut down. My lock botton is broken and I use the accesery botton to lock it. That being said I can't power down my iPod. I need help, I don't know what to do! Could you tell me how I can power down my iPod or how I can fix the slowness and the shutting down of the apps.

    - Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.
    - Next, reset the iPod
    To reset the iPod without the hardware buttons,
      Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. All your wifi and bluetooth preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected. You will have to rejoin wifi networks and repair BT devices
    Then you can try:
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
      - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
