Power Failure and eMac won't come back on

We had a thunderstorm and the power went out. Not the first time, but even though the eMac was plugged into a surge protection bar, it will not turn on. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Chris

If the PRAM battery (or whatever they call it now) is nearly dead, this will often keep the eMac from booting back up. Usually you will noticed in previous power downs and restarts you may get a message about your clock and date being set wrong. This is a sign your battery is dead. Eventually it gets tot he point where it actually prevents the Mac from starting.
So unplug the eMac, flip it over, open the door on the bottom where the RAM and battery are. Remove the battery. Put the door back on. Flip it back over. Plug it in and try to start it. If it starts up, then that was your problem. Take the little battery to your local Radio Shack, Best Buy, Comp USA, whatever, and get a new one. In the meantime you should be able to use your computer. Sleep it instead of shutting it down until you get a new battery.
Good luck,
Patrick

  • My one day old MacBook pro just turned off and it won't come back on either through mains or battery power

My one day old MacBook pro just turned off and it won't come back on either through mains or battery power it's as if the unit is completely dead. Even with the mains plugged in there is no green or orange light to say its charging or full charged. The battery was fully charged anyway seconds before the screen went off.

When you say no green or orange light are you refering to the little led on the magsafe connector?  That could mean either the charger/cable are bad or the circuitry in the MBP is faulty.  Since this is a brand new MBP best bet is to take it back to an Apple Retail store and have the genius bar staff take a look.  They can determine if it needs to be reparired or replaced.

New (3mo) macbook air screen goes black and sometimes won't come back on after I unplug it from the power cord.  Any ideas why it is doing this? Sometimes I have to hold power button for 10 seconds for it to shut off then back on. Sometimes holding the power button for a second is enough for it to come back on.

I took it to the Genius Bar, and they identified it as a hardware issue. Just got it back today. Parts replaced were:
620-5629 Display Module — Symptom: Distored/blurred/focus video issue
605-3284 Top Case with Keyboard — Symptom: specific key(s) do not work
So far so good. I'd suggest taking it in and not trying to work around it — it's a rare hardware issue (given the number of threads about it) and should be replaced.

  • My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked?

My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, I call apple support and they told me to bring it in but the nearest store is about two hours away. They said I need it to erase my hard drive but I have too many family pics on it.
would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked on it? I could replace the internal and get an enclosure for the original until I get the pics out of it?
Please advise, it's like five years of family pics I don't wanna loose them and I am worried.
    Thanks

    A Brody,
I really apprecate your very quick respond, Its too late to back up as of now, my hard drive wont load at all so I cannot follow your instruction to back it up. Learn a hard lesson but I will from now on following your link.
Also my hard drive it is not available to do the free exchange program.
I read the OWC instruction on how to replace the drive I was just wondering if the 2TB would work on it instead of the 1 TB they offer, I specifically asked for the Seage Barracuda because I had great experiences with it on PCs.
    Again, Thank you

  • Downloaded wrong (G5) v. of TFF, Ten4Fx, eMac won't come back on...

My eMac quit a month or so ago and I sent it to some of the students at  UCAB for first aid.  They pronounced it dead.  Kids!  My son took it apart and thoroughly cleaned it. (Hadn't been cleaned since I bought it in 2003, a rebuild. It, of course, was filthy.)  It started up and went like magic.  Then.....I downloaded the wrong FFF and after some lengthy attempts and lots of research realized I was working as though it was on my G5 not my eMac.  Pshaw!  by then it had locked up and wouldn't recognize my mouse nor would it force quit so (dumb me) I shut it down.  Now it won't start.  New battery, worked like a charm, like new, faster than it had been for years.
Is there any hope?  I love that little jewel!

I BD!  As usual, you hit the nail on the head (almost)
As you advised, I first tried to boot up from the original Disk, (start up holding down the "C").   Mr e refused to recognize the disk though I tried several times to activate it.  First of all it wouldn't accept the disk in the drawer, then it wouldn't let it go.  I spent several hours (days)  trying to get it to work without any luck. When it refused to respond to the commands, Comd+C; Comd+S; Comd+shift, etc. I figured it was completely kaput.  I bought this eMac in August 2001, is it possible the disk deteriorates over the years?  It did respond to Firewire but I wasn't ready to go that route yet.  In all this I had to hard quit it several times which made me very nervous.
Then I thought perhaps my Disk Warrior would do the trick.  Same routine, wouldn't accept the disk, then wouldn't let it go.    Then DW wouldn't complete the procedure prescribed.
Finally--- I tried Disk Utility in the Finder.  It verified that the HD was OK but Disk Warrior had one bad partition out of three.  I tried several times to fix the bad section  then read in the DW manual that a "Locked Disk cannot be repaired".  Fifty-three pages of instruction, bound to miss something.
Disk Utility in the Finder did the trick, the e's back in action but I guess I'll have to buy a new Disk Warrior. It did a great job, when it was new, of cleaning up the eMac and the Mac G5 17" PPC.
Thanks again for your patience and advice.   ....goldie

Hi! I accidentally deleted the place where you type the website in as well as the back and forward buttons on my Safari screen, and I can't seem to retrieve them. I've been looking at solutions that say "Go to View- customize toolbar", but nothing happens when I do that. No window pops up. I've tried deleting and reinstalling Safari several times. NOTHING WORKS. Help!

    Hi,
    Trash the com.apple.Safari.preferences.plist

  • HP Envy 32" monitor screen randomly shuts off and now won't come back one

So I've had this monitor for about two weeks. Several times it has randomly just went black. The power indicator LED is still showing it's on. My laptop still recognizes that it's connected only when I physically disconnect it from my laptop or unplug the power cord does it disconnect. Right after it happens I try switching to a different input (i had another laptop hooked up to the HDMI) and also pulling up the menu but nothing happens. I try turning it off with the power button or remote, nothing happens. Only after I unplug the power and plug it back in does the display work. ...Until this last time, it went black and no amount of unplugging and plugging back in would get it to work. It still "connects" to my laptop but there's no image, only blackness. I've mainly been using it with my lenovo thinkpad yoga via the onedock pro displayport, but when I try just HDMI with my other laptop I still get nothing. I've also tried unplugging and holding the power button for >1min like another post suggested. Any ideas? I'd hate to have to send it back.

okay so after a long wait with it being unplugged, I tried it and the display worked. i adjusted a few settings -turned off auto input selection and made DP hot plug always on (not sure what that does, but I thought I'd give it a try). Now instead of it randomly going black it randomly shows a green screen of vertical lines, and I have to unplug and wait forever before it works again. any thoughts?

  • MacBook Pro 2012. Replaced hard drive yesterday by apple. Went home working and now it turns off and won't come back on till I plug it in... Help!

Have had a ton of issues with my Mac. Went to the apple store in march and they said my processor could be going bad and they basically did nothing. Yesterday I was using my computer put it to sleep. 10 minutes later I opened it up and it completely crashed. Drove 2 hours to get to apple because I am away at school and need my computer for finals. They replaced my hard drive and it was working perfectly fine till today. Now it turns on and works and then shuts off and it won't come back on till I plug it in. It's completely charged and I need it for my classes. I have apple care but I can't keep driving back to apple every day. I have a apple appointment tomorrow but this is ridiculous. Has anyone had any of these issues? What's it going to take for them to replace my computer I can't even live a day without it right now. And by the way. I could not even get any of my data off my old hard drive. So basically nothing is on this computer right now.

Let them know how this is inconveniencing you.  For a replacement, I believe Apples general rule of thumb is if it comes in for the 3rd time for the same issue they will replace it, but it may vary by store.  It cant hurt to ask for a replacement.

  • My iPhone 4s randomly shut off last night and won't come back on. what do i do?

My iPhone 4s randomly turned off last night and it won't come back on.  It shut off with plenty of battery life last night, but just in case, I've had it plugged into the charger all night. Still nothing has happened. Any advice?

hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release.

    Most likely a bad battery.

try to restart/reset the iPad by pressing and holding both the Power/Sleep button (top edge) and Home Button for about 10 seconds until the apple logo is displayed.

  • 15-r018dx display turns off and won't come back on

I have a HP 15-R018DX laptop that I just bought and when I close the display, it turns the display off and won't come back on when I flip it open again.  I've already changed the Power Options so that the "what happens when you close the display" options are all set to "nothing happens".  Despite that, each time I close the display and open it again, the display goes blank and stays blank, though the status LEDs on the left side tell me that the compuer is still on and not hibernated, etc.
The only way to return the display to normal is to push the power button (I have it set to hibernate when I push the power button) and then turn it back on again after it hibernates.  Then, the display is illuminated again like normal.  No amount of touching the touchpad, it's buttons, or keyboard keys will return the display to normal once it turns off after the lid is closed and re-opened.  Any ideas on what's happening and how to make the display turn on when opening the display again? Thanks in advance!

I was also facing the same probs..

  • After upgrading to mavericks my mac shut off and won't come back on

I upgraded to Mavericks and my 2013 macbook pro shut off and won't come back on.  When I push the start button I can hear the chime and then my sleep light blinks really fast and then shuts off completely.  All I get is a white screen with the loading circle just going around and around.  I tried resetting the pram but that didn't work.  Any ideas?

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Alternatively, see:
