Power Mac 5400 files to G4

I have a 1996 PowerMac 5400 that still works. However, I would like to transfer the files to a Power PC G4. I was able to copy the files onto some zip disks, but I don't know how to get the zip files onto my newer Mac. (scsi vs usb).

Hi there are a few ways to work this out.
-the G4 has an internal bay that will mount an ATA zip drive, these can be found on eBay cheap, you would have to remove the cover but it's easy. The G4 has all the internal wiring.
-you can install a SCSI PCI card in the G4 which you can then plug into with your current Zip drive. This might be the route I would go as it means the disks written on your zip will be read by the same drive and the least amount of work.
-networking is also possible though sometimes this can be slow or problematic I find when you get into different OS. What you would need is a hub. Although you may also need an ethernet card as my recollection of that Mac makes me think it used a comm slot 10T or a card in the PCI slot so it may not have shipped with one originally.
All of the options are inexpensive, unless you get into the hub and card option but not outrageous if you shop in the secondhand market like eBay.

  • Can an OS  upgrade for Power Mac 5400, 5500, and 6500 be used for the 7200?

I have a Power PC 7200 with OS 7.5.1 and got an upgrade to 7.6.1 off ebay. The disc
is labeled 5400, 5500 and 6500 series. Can I use it on my 7200?

Looking at the initial sell date of the various models reveals the following:
    7200 - Aug 95
    5400 - Apr 96
    5500 - Feb 97
    6500 - Feb 97
Since the 3 models listed on the CD were released after the 7200, I would think that it probably would not work. But I would try to see if it works. You might get a message saying you can't install it on the 7200. What you might do is duplicate the System folder on the 7200. Then try to install. If the install doesn't work or corrupts the system files, you can trash the "updated" and then use the duplicated system folder.

  • Power Mac 5400/180 start up problem

My daughter's hard drive on her PM 5400/180 was corrupt. So we took a different hard drive and put it in her computer. We ran disk first aid, erased the hard drive, installed system 9.1. The computer starts to boot up, and gets hung at the happy face. The PRAM battery is new. We zapped the PRAM with the keys and pushed the button on the motherboard. It will start up from the System 9.1 CD. Any ideas on what we can try.

The usual way to distinguish hardware problems from Hard Drive & Software problems is to boot from a System/install CD. If you can do that without incident, it isolates the problem to the hard drive and its contents.
Hanging up at the small smiling mac SE indicates you are getting no further than loading the Hard Disk driver. If this hard drive passes the Disk Test function, I would say it is time to run Initialize with the "Zero all Data" option, to be certain that disk errors are not derailing the boot-up process while the Mac is not yet smart enough to properly report them to you. This process may take several hours, but when completed, your Mac's Hard drive will have all good blocks. [Note: If this were a SCSI drive, a "Test Disk" pass would be required afterward, before you could say all bad blocks had been scrubbed out.]
Since this process writes over all data, a re-install of the System Software will be required upon completion.

  • Power Mac 10.5.8 Cannot Eject Drives or Send Files to Trash

    Hello,
I'm posting to the forum for a friend. He is using a Power Mac OSX 10.5.8 with Dual 2 GHz Power PC G5 processor. The past two months he has been having issues deleting files and ejecting drives (flash drives and external hard drives). He will move files to the trash and the animation (poof of dust) and sound will occur but the actual file is not deleted. Also, when he tries to eject any drives, an error message appears stating the drive is in use by other applications. However, no other applications besides finder are open, and when I check the task manager, none are running in the background. This error has caused one of his external hard drives to become corrupted. We recently updated the computer and after the update the permissions were messed up and we couldn't even create a new folder due to insufficient permisions. We're currently running all available first-aid commands from disk utility. If anyone knows what the issue might be, please respond.
    Much appreciated, blessings.
    Isabel

    Hello,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

Do it with a Firewire cable (buy a 800/400 adapter if you need it) - the USB transfer takes a much longer time.
Start up your old PowerMac G4 holding down the "T" key, for target disk mode.
On your new MacBook Pro open "Migration Assistant" in your utilities folder.
Connect the 2 computers by firewire cable and follow the prompts in Migration Assistant.

  • How do I back up files and reinstall original disks on my Power Mac G-4 (2000)

How do I back up files and reinstall original disks on my Power Mac G-4 (yr. 2000). I know that sounds basic but I have very few techno skills. So please "talk down" to me. I had a newer PC (2005) but the hard drive crashed and I am trying to resuscitate this old mac until I can afford to buy a new one. I am in the middle of writing a book (based on Steve Job's life) and must have SOMETHING to write with. Anyone have a better one they can loan me? I am in Maine on the coast. BTW this machine seems to have trouble reading or formatting most CD-disks. Can anyone recommend a type and brand that works well with this model? Thanks for any assistance anyone can render. Here is what I have:
    Machine Name:          Power Mac G4
      Machine Model:          PowerMac3,4
      CPU Type:          PowerPC G4  (2.9)
      Number Of CPUs:          1
      CPU Speed:          467 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU):          1 MB
      Memory:          768 MB
      Bus Speed:          133 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          4.2.8f1

Why do you want to reformat the drive?  Is it because the machine is running slow?
Be sure to backup you important files, like the book, daily.
The cheapest approach would be to try to figure out why the machine is running slow.  Be sure to try safe boot.
You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
    1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.
    2) You should run disk utility
          Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
          a) verify the disk
          b) update your permissions.
    3) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive
         is being checked.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
    4) Another way to correct filesystem problems is into single use mode.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
Basically, you hold down the command + s key then  powering on your machine. The command key
has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar.
    4) You may want to run applejack to clean up your machine.
          http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
    6) Run hardware diagnostics.  It's good for a sanity check.
The older versions of ccc were donationware.
Here are two utilities for making a complete backup of your internal hard drive.  I've recommend using one of these so that you can create a bootable system  on your external hard drive. ( PPC require a firewire connected drive. )  Once created, you can run your system from the external drive.  Hold down the option key on your keyboard then power on your machine.  This will bring you in startup manager click on the drive image you wish to boot then click on the arrow key to the right.

  • Why can't I open and retrieve my files from iPhoto and my address book after importing the files from my Power mac G5 to my new Mac Pro? I get a warning that says the new OS on my Pro doesn't open files from a Power Mac. Any idea how I can fix this?

For your addressbook, export the files to vCard on the PowerMac, then bring them over to your Mac Pro. For your iPhoto, copy the Users -> yourname -> Pictures folder to your Desktop on the Mac Pro, and open iPhoto on the Mac Pro holding the command and option keys.  Select the library file from that Pictures folder and open it.  It should import all the pictures into iPhoto as part of the rebuild process.  Other PowerPC to Intel migration issues are covered here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295

  • Moving files from a Power mac 7600

    Hi,
My friend's Dad has 2 Macs, a power mac 7600 and a iMac.
He would like to get a bunch of files off a power macintosh 7600 on to an external hard drive, to be accessed on the imac. Is this possible and what external hard drive would you recommend?
    Thanks for any insights!
    cheers!
    davej

Whew, this isn't going to be easy at all of the 4 ways I can think of due to the ports involved on both ends!
    1. Compressing them & eMailing them if the 7600 connects to the Internet.
    2. Ethernet & File Sharing, not easy to connect the 2 but possible.
OSX.4.x lost the file transfer ability of Appletalk... 10.1.5 thru 10.3.9 had it!
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301183
With OS9 set with Appletalk to using TCP/IP, and or Chooser>AppleShare+IP, you can connect to the 10.4.8 machine.
Another solution is OpenDoor's $39 Shareway IP, (some OS7, 8, 9 releases had a limited version included)...
    http://www.opendoor.com/shareway/
    Which makes OS9 Tiger compatable.
"Mac OS X 10.4 and later don't support Personal File Sharing (or other AFP) over Appletalk, though by initiating the connection from the opposite direction you could still achieve an IP connection from a Mac OS 8 computer to a sharing Mac OS X computer. The Network preference pane in Mac OS X 10.4 and later still offers the AppleTalk checkbox, but it is for browsing AppleTalk-advertised resources and zones. The subsequent connection must be over TCP/IP."

    3. Finding a hard to find SCSI external Drive & an even harder to find  Firewire<->SCSI converter.
    4. Via Floppy Disk & Finding a USB Floppy for the newer on. Can't remember if they had an Internal Floppy on the 7600.

  • See and copy files from a Power Mac without keyboard and monitor

A friend gave me his G4 Power Mac. I think it is a Quicksilver. (I will post some pics of both the front and back on Flickr if anyone wants to see it.) I didn't get the keyboard or monitor cuz I forgot I would need the keyboard to use Firewire Target Disc mode on it. I just need to see what files are on it (and probably copy whatever ones I need onto my newer Powerbook.)
I have a 17" Powerbook G4 DL and a Powerbook Firewire (500mhz, running OS 9.2.2), and another G4 Power Mac ADP set up to always start up in Firewire Target Mode so I can use it like an external drive (which I never do...) and a bunch of older Macs (LC 580, SE...)
How can I get onto this new machine? I need to see what files are on there. I do not have access to another monitor but I might be able to borrow a USB keyboard so I can start it up in Target Mode. Is there anything I can do before I scrounge for a USB keyboard?
I have tried connecting by Firewire and ethernet with both Powerbooks. The Power Mac isn't showing up either way. I am pretty sure it has a CD drive but pushing on the door (one of two on the front) doesn't open it up.
I am assuming the Power Mac is running OSX.
    Many thanks.
    Cheers,

I think it is a Quicksilver
It may be easier to look at the rear panel for some labeling. It may be silk-screened on with white paint and a bit hard to see.A four-digit model number with "M" as a leader will pretty much nail down the model without taking photos that may not show much.Quicksilvers can have models number M8360, M8493, or M8493 depending on the config.
For snopping the drive, it may be easier to pull the drive from the G4 and use one of these extremely handy gadgets:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/
to mount the bare G4 drive on your working PowerBook with OSX. It will show up on the PB as an external drive and you can see what's there. The adaptor will be serviceable for more than just checking this hard drive. Anyone with multiple Macs will get a lot of use from it.
Remember that some third-party keyboards do not recognize Mac start-up key combos, and that some current Aluminum Apple boards may not work correctly with older Macs. The Al board with numeric keypad (here) says it will work with Tiger. The wireless ones and the short "non-keypad" version require Leopard or higher.

  • Transferring files from old Macintosh HD (G4 Power Mac) to replacement

I have had to install a new hard drive on my G4 Power Mac. How do you transfer Address Book and Mail files and Firefox bookmarks from the old hard drive? The old hard drive is still running although it has 4 bad blocks and causes freezing, hence replacing it. I should be very grateful for instruction over this.

the easiest would be to us Migration assistant to transfer all users (including all their user info) from the old HD to the new one. It will also, let you transfer apps if you like. If you insist on transferring only3 things you mentioned then copy the following from the old hard drive to the corresponding locations on the new one
    ~/Library/Mail
    ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book
    ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
everywhere above ~ means your home directory = /Users/username

  • I have a Power MAC 7200.  It's hardware is failing.  How can I get the old files off, so I can use them on a PC?  This system will save to a 3.5 inch floppy disk.

My Power Mac 7200 is failing.  I would like to be able to use old reports on my PC.  How can I transfer them?
The Mac will save files to a 3.5 inch floppy disk.

You could write the files to a PC formatted floppy, you might be able to do File Sharing from it to the PC with an Ethernet cable.
How bad off is the 7200? Can we maybe fix it?

  • Migrating files from Power Mac G4 to iMac Intel Core 2 Duo machine.

I'm hoping someone can help me figure this out.
I have a Power Mac G4 that runs OS X 10.2.8. I just got an iMac Intel that runs 10.5.2. Both machines have firewire ports but when I have them connected and try to turn on my G4 while holding down the "T" key, the G4 starts to boot up--then it shuts down.
Does anyone have any idea why this keeps happening? Or, alternatively, is there a way for me to transfer files from my G4 to my iMac without using firewire or a flash drive?

Click here for information; the position of the hard drive on the G4's ATA bus needs to be changed. If it is a SCSI drive, FireWire Target Disk mode cannot be used and the items need to be migrated by hand or the drive placed in an enclosure.

You need to tell us A) what app did you create those files with? and B) what format are they in (.doc, .txt, etc)?
It may be possible to just transfer the files and your font to another machine without conversion depending on how they were made.
Where did you get the BengaliCS font?

  • How do I transfer files from my old Power Mac Mini to my new one?

Oops...thought I had to write the question in the above spot.
Question:  How do I transfer my files from my old Power Mac Mini to my new Intel based Mac Mini?  From what I read, I needed a 40/80 cable, which I bought.  However, I only have one monitor.

    Anna,
Here is a discussion on the same topic that will save some typing:

Jolly makes a good point about screen sharing.
I prefer the firewire approach just because I have had more problems with ethernet connections than with firewire connections.  Both options work, firewire has just been easier for me when the operating system on the machines are different.  Read the options and post back if you would like additional coaching.
