Power mac 5500/250 image control

We have a power mac 5500/225 being used in a classroom, the display image is fuzzy. I can not find a deguass or any other control that will sharpen the image. Any help?

The MiniDIN-8 to two-pin cable is called out by part number in the service manual, along with the procedure. I must have extracted it from that manual at some point, since I had this file hanging around:
On-Screen Video
Before you begin,
• Turn off virtual memory
• Turn off the power
• Remove the I/O door
• Remove the rear housing
• Discharge the CRT
• Remove the anode cap
• Disconnect the microphone cable
• Remove the rear EMI shield
• Remove the modem card (if present)
*Warning: This product contains high voltage and a high-vacuum picture tube. To prevent serious injury, review CRT safety in Bulletins/Safety.
*Warning: Never use an antistatic wriststrap until after discharging the CRT.
Note: The 5500 is made with Rev. B parts.
1 Remove the three Phillips screws that secure the analog board to the chassis.
2 Tilt the analog board back, being careful not to put stress on the cables.
3 Locate jumper P805 (Rev. A) or P102 (Rev. B) near the logic board connector on the lower left corner of the analog board.
4 Remove the shunt that covers the pins of jumper P805 (Rev. A) or P102 (Rev. B).
5 Note: It is very important to perform this step correctly according to the Rev. A or Rev. B instructions
• The square silkscreened marking at P805 (Rev. A only) indicates pin 1 on the analog board. For Rev. A, connect one end of the monitor adjustment cable (922-1513) to P805. Be sure to position the connector so the pin 1 opening is aligned over pin 1 (square marking) on the analog board.
• For Rev. B, connect one end of the monitor adjustment cable (922-1513) to P102. The arrow mark on the plug connector (see graphic) must go over the pin closer to the top of the analog board. Hold the connector with gold connectors facing you, and place the connector on the two pins at P102.
Important: The adjustment won’t work if the plug is incorrectly placed on the pins.
6 Connect the other end of the monitor adjustment cable (922-1513) to the modem port.
Note: You must use the modem port. Remove the internal modem and plastic modem port cover, if present.
7 Route the monitor adjustment cable so it stays clear of sharp edges and remains slack.
8 Reconnect the grounding screw to the EMI shield.
9 *Warning: Be sure to remove the antistatic wriststrap before replacing the anode cap. Replace the anode cap.
10 Position the monitor so you can see the screen.
11 Turn on the power.
12 Run Display Service Utility to display the on-screen video adjustment controls. The controls appear after selecting PowerPC 5200/5300/5400/5500 in the pattern selection box and then select adjust geometry.
13 Use the scroll bars to adjust the horizontal and vertical controls.
14 To cancel settings (and revert to the last saved setting) click Cancel.

15 To save your settings (in the monitor’s selected resolution) click Save.
16 Important: After you click Save or Cancel, the name of the next screen resolution appears at the top of the screen. You must set and save the on-screen video adjustments for each remaining screen resolution. Otherwise, if you change from a saved resolution to an unsaved resolution, the display will appear misadjusted. Set and save the settings for each screen resolution. After saving the last screen resolution, exit Display Service Utility.

  • Power Mac 5500 hard disk woes...

I had a PM 5500 but with a faulty HD. I decided to swap in an 800 MB Quantum Trailblazer from a Performa 5200 I had laying around and was met with some success. However I wanted something a little bigger for my purposes so I found a 40 GB Western Digital Caviar and another 4GB Quantum Fireball SE from an older G3 I have. Here are where my problems start..
To format these, I have been using an external firewire drive enclosure so that I can do it from my Powerbook. So I try formatting and installing Mac OS 9.1 onto the 40 GB and no go. I try again with the 4 GB and still nothing.
    This is what happens...
I boot up the 5500 with one of the other HDs in, and it gives me the floppy question mark error. It spins up, there's a delay before the question marks appears, then the HD sounds like it resets itself and the question mark is shown again. I've checked jumper positions and they are all on master. Just to see if it would help I tried other jumper positions but the computer obviously didn't like that so I was greeted with a black screen.
My question is.. What makes the 800 MB so special that it is allowed to boot, while the other two are victim to a continuous spin up, reset, spin up,
reset cycle. These two drives are both functional, and when I boot into the Mac OS 9 install they are recognized.
It is also important to note that I have tried to copy over the 8.6 system folder that resides on the working HD and copy them over to the other HDs, still met with no success. Also, this 5500 may be living in another chassis. I don't remember exactly but I do remember transplanting mobos from all-in-ones like the 5500 and the 5200 with their respective drives and outer plastics. Not sure if that would change anything.
I think I'm missing something and any help is greatly appreciated... Thanks.
Powermac 5500   Mac OS 9.1.x   Not sure.. But I believe this 5500 lives in another chassis.. I might have swapped it some time ago.

If you format a drive in a firewire case, it might not get the drivers installed that it needs to work internally. Also, if I read your post correctly, you installed OS9 from your PB while the drive was in teh FW box. This is also a problem as the installers often install things that are needed by the computer hte installer is running on.
Is there some reason why you can't boot the 5500 from the OS9 installer and format and install the OS in the 5500? That's your best chance of success.

  • Power Mac G4 shows only screensaver image; won't read disks

My Power Mac G4 will no longer show the finder or any of my folders. It boots beyond the grey and blue screens to show a screensaver I'd chosen earlier, but doesn't show the finder or any of my folders. It will not read any of its original install disks, nor read the OS X Panther disks.
I don't know if its versions are current. It has no internet card, which has not been a problem until now as I also use a G5 that's on a cable modem.
I got this computer second-hand. It came with these disks:
Apple Hardware Test (Power Mac G4)
    Power Mac G4 Software Install
    Power Mac G4 Software Restore
    Power Mac G4 Developer Tools
Mac OS X Panther Install Disks 1, 2 and 3
I have tried installing them all from the screensaver mode, as well as from CD mode. Nothing has been forthcoming. Is my data still present? Does the OS X need to be installed, or has the system just stalled in the booting? I've rebooted a dozen or more times while working with the disks. Since I'm getting beyond the grey and blue screens, is this a sign of life?

    Hi t_orzechowski!
Have you found a resolution yet?
Have you ever run Repair Disk?
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.

  • Temperature Control Issue on a Power Mac G5

    Hello everybody,
I have a Power Mac G5 Dual-Core 2,3 GHz (Late 2005) bought in April 2006. A couple of weeks ago I decided to clean the dust accumulated inside 4 years so I proceeded to disassembly the system, removing almost everything (motherboard, processor, superdrive, hard disk, power supply, etc). After reassembling it I did a "Thermal Calibration" using an Apple Service Diagnostic disc (ver. 2.6.3), the only indication I didn't follow was that the room temperature was 29ºC instead of 25ºC or less. The system works perfectly but for some days I've noticed that the processor's temperature is too high (up to 70ºC) and the fans don't help (they are always at the minimum RPM with slight variations, below 600 RPM, totally inaudible). Before performing the cleaning, with the same room temperature, the processor didn't go above 60ºC because the fans rose its RPM's whenever the processor reached that temperature.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

the only indication I didn't follow was that the room temperature was 29ºC instead of 25ºC or less.
You identified a possible cause of the temperature difference.
Calibrations of any kind use a baseline. In a thermal calibration, an ambient temperature baseline is used, transmitted via the ambient temperature sensor in the G5.
Since proper ambient temperature is necessary to proper calibration, one may assume that as the cause of your current temperature variance.
The only way to be sure, is to re-calibrate the machine with ambient temperatures in the correct range.

  • Power mac become stupidly slow after update from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8

Hey people. My Power mac takes on average 3mins 30 to start up after i updated from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8 . Before it took on average about 50secs to start up and get a application running. Are any of you experiencing this problem. I have only used 50gigs of space. I have done system recoverys and this still happens

i have checked. it will have the have the white screen where you see the apple logo and the loading cursor. That lasts about 40secs. Then it will it will show the loading bar. Thats lasts about 30secs. then it will show my desktop background image. It takes about 40secs to load my desktop items. then it will take about a min after that to show my username, time,Country flag,Volume control and my wireless icon in the top right hand corner. I have done 4 system restores, my recovery disks start at 10.4.4 it will work fine all the way up until 10.4.8. Is there a major bug in the upgrade or what?

  • Can I use a flat screen monitor with my Power Mac G$?

Can I connect my Power Mac G4 (model M5183) to a modern flat screen monitor? I already tried it with a small flat screen TV which works fine with my MacBook Pro but couldn't make it work with the G4. I only need the G4 for a SCSI slide scanner that I use occasionally, and would love to get rid of the mostrosity of a monitor that came with the G4. I've updated the processor in the G4 to 1 GHz and run it with OS 10.5.8.

Hi Ron, what ports are on the G4's Video card? VGA, DVI, or AGP?
    Which Video card?
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac.
Then click on More Info>Hardware>Graphics/Displays and report like this...

  • Jaguar on Power Mac G3 what to do?

    Hello,
I have a nice Power Mac G3 and i would like to install Mac OS 10.2. I have tried to install before but almost everything "unexpectidly quit". I have a cd-rw so i need to install patchburn (unless you have another sugesstion, i do not know what brand the cd-rw is) I will also have to install "wireless card bus" app for my belkin wireless f5d7000 (version 3000). so is there a firmware i need to install before i do anything. I do not have mac os 9 on it. please take me step by step to install 10.2. Thanks!
    TheMacGuy 12

step by step to install 10.2
    • First, assume that 10.2 hates you, and thinks your dog is ugly, too. It will not be polite or cooperative. If your Mac goes to sleep or you try to install too much at once, or you do not repair permissions often during the update process, it will fail.
    • Remove any PCI cards that did not ship in your Mac. Reduce the memory below 192 MB, preferably all Apple original.
    • Open the Energy Saver Control Panel and set Sleep to Never.
    • Insert the Mac OS X Install CD and click on the Install Mac OS X (or similar) Icon. Your Mac should restart, boot from the CD, and bring up the Install Opening Screen, inviting you to choose English or another language.
At this point, If you need to use Disk Utility, it is available on the Installer Menu. Remember that re-partitioning your Hard Drive will Erase your Hard drive. But partitions can be erased individually using Disk Utility, and some users insist they have better luck installing 10.2 on its own newly-erased partition. It is not proven.
    • De-select the extraneous languages and Printer Drivers you do not need, and any Applications you know you will never use. Proceed with the installation.
    • After the installed stuff is automatically optimized, your Mac will re-boot from the newly-installed image on the Hard drive. Sometimes it gets lost at this step and has to be led back to re-boot from the newly-installed image on the Hard Drive. It should enter the Set-up program to establish the Owner account and set various parameters. [In 10.3, it did not all fit on one CD, so after your Mac re-boots, there is still more installing to do, and a CD swap is required.]
    • Set Energy Saver settings to Sleep Never. You should assume that permissions are corrupted. At your earliest opportunity, run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    • If you want to bring your Mac up to 10.2.8, apply the 10.2.8 Combo update [only] and then Repair Permissions.
    • Apply additional updates a few at a time and Repair Permissions after each batch.
    • Once you can run the version of Mac OS X 10.2 you desire, you are free to add your removed Hardware back in, and install any additional drivers you may need.
That's my version of what to do. Be sure to read the directions in the read-me files that come with it, too.

  • My power mac G5 won't boot up but has red flashing light and intense fan noise.

I Have a Power Mac G5 that flashes a red light that I've never seen before. There is nothing on the monitor and the fan noise is incredible.
HAs anyone ever had this problem?

    Hi Michael,
It's normal for the fans to go full speed if the OS won't load to handle them.
Where is this red light, on the logic board, or front panel?
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • 2nd Power Mac as HD Dock Verses Hard Drive Dock

I had Startech satdock4u2e dock with spaces for four hard drives. I hadn't used it for a awhile, but today I found that someone had left the two fans running, which apparently burned the unit out as nothing works although the light on the power adapter clearly shows its getting power. Probably the same person who trashed part of the operating system. In any case this dock was like $120 to $130.00 when new so it got me to thinking why bother putting such money in an item with such cheap short term fans. Some of the other docking stations I've seen cost a lot more and probably don't use standard parts or or parts which are not replaceable.
I have room for another aluminum cased Power Mac here so I am thinking why not buy a second used Power Mac and essentially use it as a docking station. I am starting to expand my self employment in graphics work and often work with very large images (2GB +/-) so I am looking to archive my work on HDs. As the HD units become full they would be removed from the 2nd Power Mac and placed into storage.
Can I use the second Mac Pro as a slave unit without any OS installed on it or would it be better to install a OS on it, but have no monitor?
I am thinking that I might have to install an OS as I have smcFanControl installed on my current Power Mac for increasing the fan speed and I would want that on the second Power Mac.
I wanting to use Carbon Copy Cloner to update the image files on the 2nd Power Mac. I have two spare ports open on my router so I am thinking of just connecting the 2nd Mac Pro via ethernet.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Grant Bennet-Alder wrote:
does not work any longer due to cheap fans
Then pull out the fans, look up the part numbers on their labels, and figure out what air moved in cfm and sound generated in db are. Then look for fans with at least those cfm specs and quieter, and your repair cost will likely be under US$20.
Using a US$1500 Mac Pro silver tower as a hard drive enclosure does not make sense. It could do much more, and uses too much power just to spin up Hard drives.
They don't sell parts. The unit is not meant to be serviced.
These exact fans appear to available from once source in Hong Kong for $15.35 each; however, there is lot of evidence that this place is a scam. How exactly do they ship two fans from H.K. for free for instance? In any case if there is a problem with the items you are expected to ship them back to H.K. as outlined by people who have previously purchased from them. In any case I'd have the same junk fans from China and what is to say the fans didn't burn out other parts of the circuit board to boot.
I am not sure where that $1500 figure comes from, but they don't regularly sell for that used unless you got something extra special and its in mint condition with its original box in which case I wouldn't be buying one of those in the first place.
Power usage is not an issue even if the unit was left running all the time. Less power would be used if kept in sleep mode or shut down completely for once a week backups, which would be similar to wear possible caused by hot swapping them into a dock once a week (i.e., the old leaving them run all the time versus shutting them down argument).
Use a sledge hammer to tap a tack into the wall... whoops broke the dry wall and 2x4!
The FBDIMMs in the 2006-2008 can also put out 10-15W per DIMM and the backside of the case is putting out a lot of heat, enough to warm a room, but generally I don't hear the fans until they hit 1000 rpm and Apple chose to have a default that was too slow to do a good job cooling the memory cage (which blocks air flow from reaching into it properly, and chose to be quiet over adequate or better cooling). And to avoid at any cost going back to the terrible liquid cooling of the G5s.
For casual use I have some fanless open "docks" that are hot-swap and open and yes "warm to the touch" but not hot.
Use to buy only OWC drive cases, some were too loud, some were cheap, never had a problem as far as failure goes.
The balance between noise and cooling, plus how different and what harmonics and sounds people are comfortable with - it may not be "loud" but just the wrong Hz for my ears. You'll love SSDs, a heat sink, no fan, expensive but no moving parts - and fast.
Heat killing disk drives today is less of an issue. 128GB are inside tablets that have no apparent issues or cooling. Servers and big customers demanded and got drives and processors that operate safely 5 and 10 and 15*C warmer than before.
When did you last notice that Seagate and Western Digital 4TB drives have operating temps like these?
    http://www.legitreviews.com/seagate-desktop-hdd-15-4tb-vs-wd-black-4tb-hard-driv e-review_2182
The two main killers of electronics are heat and dust. The cooler the drive runs the longer it will last regardless of what the manufacturer's data says. I tend not to believe what the manufacturer's say - as an example I'd give the current argument among some computer users that some of WD's new Caviar Black HDs are not actually caviar black models, but lessor drives with a black sticker.
The cooler a piece of equipment runs the longer it will last generally applies to most other items. After all we have local farmer's who run their $250,000 tractors at night because they run better and it means less wear and the possibility of having a maintenance problem during harvest season where it might 100 F outside.
I must agree the Apple default fan speed is bad. In winter the internal temp is 108 with the fans at default. In summer its its 122/126 with the default Apple fan setting. This area of the country can easily be 30 below zero in winter (with wind chill) and 100 in the summer. With smcFanControl I able to run the temps downward. In the winter this has an advantage of the computers actually heating the room they are in as you have said. - I actually shut off one of the furnace vents.
I tend to baby my computers a lot - I guess that is why I still have 10+ year old G4 PowerPCs running and look like they are new, although I like the ease of use of the aluminum cases much better.

  • Power Mac G5: A common dilemma: to upgrade or buy new

I know there are a lot of discussions on this topic going around, but everyone's needs and uses are different, so I'd appreciate any input on my situation.
I own a Dual 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 with only 1GB RAM and a failing 160GB hard drive.
At this point, I basically only use this machine for web browsing, iTunes, and Garageband, and am running Tiger.
I had been having some major hard drive problems so I wiped my system and re-installed Tiger , importing everything from my iBookG4 (which, I recently dropped and the screen connection has failed and is unusable except for as an external hard drive in target disk mode. it is probably too expensive to fix for what its worth so I will probably try to sell it for scrap).
Anyway, everything was ok for about a week until I opened firefox and noticed all my settings and bookmarks were gone. When I restarted my computer, my music, pictures, documents, and movies folders were all unable to be located (although my applications were fine and my hard drive still showed that the space was the same). I'm not sure if I imported some problem from my iBook or if my hard drive was just messing up again, but I've decided that I either need to upgrade or get a new computer.
Basically, I am thinking about upgrading my memory, getting a new hard drive, and upgrading to leopard (mostly for time machine). Or, possibly getting a new iMac or waiting a bit and then getting a new iMac or even (gasp) a PC (highly unlikely).
I was going to get the memory from ramjet and I was thinking of only adding 1GB to make 2GB but could be persuaded of getting more but 400Mhz DDR memory is a bit more expensive than other types. As for the hard drive, I was thinking about getting a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA 3.0Gb/s 320-GB Hard Drive with a 16 MB cache. I could pay $15 more for a 500GB with 32 MB cache but i really don't need the space and am unsure whether the cache will really help much. Seagates used to have a pretty good rep I thought, but now they seem to be getting mixed reviews, so I don't know.
Obviously, I am no computer expert, so any help would be great. Would it be worth it to spend between $250 and $325 to get the memory, drive, and leapord when I could maybe sell my G5 and my 23" apple cinema display (the old clear kind) and get an iMac? I could maybe get about $700 - $800 for the G5 and around $300 - $350 for the display. Will an iMac be faster than my G5 with the upgrades? I don't think I need a mac pro for my current uses.
Thanks for your help. Feel free to offer advice on what to do with my iBook too.

    Memory: $60 for 2 x 1GB, I'd call that very affordable.

Disk drives: 2 x $69 for pair of WD Caviar 640GB

It is not about capacity as much as speed and quiet, cool, and how well it handles OS X. I use half the drive, other half is unformatted free space. I'd skip the Seagates. 7200.11 is current.
I expect new iMacs in '09 as they are overdue.
Hard drives you keep or put in FW case.
Current Leopard is 10.5.4 DVD but would be nice to see another DVD now with 10.5.6, $109 (Amazon, maybe less Newegg?).
    iMac vs others:

Sounds like three things you may not be doing or have:
SuperDuper for backups. You don't need Leopard.
Disk Warrior. Everyone, or I should say "HFS+" needs #1 disk repair utility.
Backup drives. Two backup sets you switch between, and a small "emergency" partition on one for running Disk Warrior and such.
I replace or move older drives to backup use and put new boot drive in on a yearly basis. Some new drives and memory should be all you need. A couple people even stress their system with graphics and video, and upgrading to 3 or 4 new drives revived their system so that they could hold on and wait another year.

  • Hey, I'm fixing up a Power Mac G5 for a friend, he gave me a Cinema HD 30' display to use with it. My problem is, the Power Mac G5 doesn't have a place where I can plug in one of the display's cords. the cord is called a "DC power (24.5 V)"

So the Cinema HD's DVI goes in fine, I don't remember what video card is in the computer, all I know is it's Nvideo, it's old, only like 256MB, but does have two DVI ports. Anyway, then the display's firewire and USB can go in. But there's this weird thing, had to do some research to figure out what the connector/cord is called. it's the size of a USB, rectangular with oval sides. It's called a "DC power (24.5 V)" I'm like, what the heck is this thing? it won't go into the computer anywhere, I'm assuming I need some sort of adapter?? Help please, if I need an adapter or video card, links would be extremely helpful.
    Best regards,
    Poly

I don't believe so, I have a DVI to ADC adapter I was messing with, my DVI from the display plugs into the adapter, then i grap the adapter's ADC connector, and it does not go into my Power mac G5's video card. So that confirms that the display is DVI, and works with my DVI video card perfectly. It's just the one wire/connector that apple calls the "DC power (24.5 V)" that won't go in anywhere. Basically the display has a DVI connector, firewire connector, and USB, which all go into my Power mac G5 fine. However, it has another wire with a connector that won't go in anywhere, from what I've read off the teach specs of my Cinema HD 30' that final connector/wire is listed as "DC power (24.5 V)"
So my problem is with that. I have NO idea what it does, or goes into. When I google "DC power (24.5 V) Apple" it comes up with weird images none of which have that connector. So I'm just so. Confused.

  • Use iMac in Target Display Mode with a Power Mac G4

I would like to connect my Power Mac G4 MDD (Model = http://support.apple.com/kb/SP63) to the new iMac (27 inch, Mid 2010) in Target Display Mode. That is, I want the new iMac to be the display for my Power Mac G4. Has anybody done this (including using the iMac 27 inch, Late 2009, which can also do this)? In a general sort of way, this sort of thing is described on this support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924.
The problem: The iMac requires a Mini Displayport connection. The PowerMac has ADC and DVI-I display connections and also came with an adapter for converting DVI-I to VGA. How can I convert/adapt to get the appropriate Mini Displayport connection?
Gefen makes a converter (http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=8913) that will convert DVI-D to Mini Displayport, but the description explicitly says that it will work with DVI-D only while my PowerMac has DVI-I. I know that these are two different, incompatible connections.
Is there another converter that works with DVI-I? Or is there a way to adapt from DVI-I to DVI-D? Or how about a VGA or ADC to Mini Displayport converter?
    Thanks.

Thanks so much for your reply. You're right on target for what I'm looking for and that article is VERY helpful! If you don't mind, I do have a couple more questions/clarifications.
    1) First, I think that I didn't read the Wikipedia reference concerning DVI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigitalVisualInterface) closely enough. It includes the following paragraph. If I understand it and what you said, it shouldn't be a problem to connect the male DVI-D of the converter into the female DVI-I socket of my Power Mac. Right?
+The long flat pin on a DVI-I connector is wider than the same pin on a DVI-D connector, so it is not possible to connect a male DVI-I to a female DVI-D by removing the 4 analog pins. It is possible, however, to connect a male DVI-D cable to a female DVI-I connector. Many flat panel LCD monitors have only the DVI-D connection so that a DVI-D male to DVI-D male cable will suffice when connecting the monitor to a computer's DVI-I female connector.+
    2) I'm not clear on the difference between the Altona AT-DP200 and the Gefen converter. The Gefen converter is somewhat less expensive, so I'm trying to figure out what the downside is. The article you mentioned says that the ATP-DP200 "doesn't scale images", but that seems to only be an issue if I'm trying to connect other devices (PS3, Blu-ray), not if I just want to connect my Power Mac.
The description of the Gefen converter includes the following drawbacks:
+The only major drawback to Gefen's solution is no support for VGA devices or HDCP. A minor gripe would be the fact that the Gefen device only accepts one input resolution and only outputs one resolution (1920 x 1200 at 60 Hz). These limited options aside, the Gefen device looks like it could do the basic trick of transforming a DVI signal to Mini DisplayPort so that you could use your 27" iMac for a few more purposes, provided that the input signal carries the required 1920 x 1200 resolution.+
I'm not clear on what the practical impact of those limitations would be. I don't think the the lack of support for VGA devices or HDCP is an issue for my application. But I'm wondering about the statement that it only accepts one input resolution and outputs only one resolution (1920 x 1200) and the need for the input signal to carry 1920 x 1200. I take it, first of all, that the Power Mac can supply that input resolution. And, what is the impact of the device only having that resolution output to the iMac screen? That is, how would that look on the screen, ugly or okay? Finally, would the Altona device provide a better looking output on the iMac screen because it can apparently handle different resolutions? The manufacturer's description says, "Resolutions: all resolutions up to 1920x1200 (It is Important to select one of the resolutions that display
is capable of displaying, refer to your display’s users manual)."
    Thanks again.
