Power Mac 6100 and Mac IIsi Files rescue needed

I have a PowerMac 6100 and a Mac IIsi that I need to rescue the files I have on the hard drives. I haven't turned either of these babies on since 2000. Do you think I have a chance of rescuing them? When I shut down my PowerMac before I moved I couldn't rebuild the desktop anymore. The other Mac has all my Mom's files that she typed before she passed away. If you have any ideas of what I can do, I would appreciate the help.
PowerMac 6100   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier   MacIIsi

Aleki,
Start up the computers and see if they work. The 6100 will probably have a dead battery and need a little extra trick to get the monitor to start up. Push the power button in. After ten seconds, push the power button off then on quickly. This will wake up the monitor.
I had a total stranger drive up to the house and ask for a computer so I said "let's give this one a try for the fun of it." I grabbed an LC 580 that had been out in the pacific/inland northwest weather for over a year ( our storms come in from Portland) and the Mac started right up. I do not recommend leaving your computer out in the rain but if you forget one out in the yard, just dry it out and start it up. No moving parts - just blow the dust out of the disk drive. lol
You will need to put an IBM floppy disk into the drive, open files and save them as rtf files to the floppy for the most convenient file transfers.

  • Pro versus Intel Power Mac??? Need advise please

OK guys it is time for me to upgrade or nearing that time (as soon as Leopard is released)
Currently I have a Power Mac G5 2.0 Ghz with all the usual stuff (Radeon X800XT). I do use it with a 30" ACD. I am looking at jumping platforms to the Intel based Apples. However I thought about maybe even going with a Powerbook Pro. However whenever I speak to a Apple sales associate at the local store, they are always telling me the laptops are unreliable, and that I will have much more problems in general because the electronics are so shrunk. Now I use a windows laptop (IBM) for my day time job and never have had any issues as such due to the miniturization of the components! Are Apple laptops more susceptible to failure. Just wanted to get some opinions from people owning these machines and using them pretty much daily for web development and stuff for long hours and I mean long hours
    Thanks in advance.

    Max,
I prefer 2 GBs of RAM in my machine, as this enables "dual-channel" mode across the memory bus, and it sounds like you won't need any more than that based on your reported usage. 2 GBs generally provides enough physical memory to maintain a sizeable amount of "inactive" RAM (which greatly enhances the launch times of your once-used applications), with a bit left over for overhead "free" memory.
Just about everyone here will recommend you buy when you want to buy, regardless of any upcoming OS release. Compared to the cost of your machine, any upgrade will be nominal, and we have no idea right now when, exactly, Leopard will be released.
If you do go portable, BEWARE!! I have a rockin', if aging, G4 desktop system. This machine is decked out with all the extras: dual monitors for extended Desktop, the most powerful GPU a G4 will take, RAID storage, etc., etc. Alas, it sits completely unused since I went portable myself over a year ago (it still has never been shut down, though!). It is even less likely to be used now that I have a much faster Macbook Pro.
What I think you will find is that a portable is just so much more convenient to use than a desktop system. It can be used anywhere in or out of the house. You can use it sitting, standing, or laying on the floor. You can take it with you anywhere you go. Once upon a time, the convenience of having a portable was a trade-off for power and speed, but not anymore; a Macbook Pro is going to stomp even your G5, I'm afraid.

  • Power Mac 5400 files to G4

I have a 1996 PowerMac 5400 that still works. However, I would like to transfer the files to a Power PC G4. I was able to copy the files onto some zip disks, but I don't know how to get the zip files onto my newer Mac. (scsi vs usb).

Hi there are a few ways to work this out.
-the G4 has an internal bay that will mount an ATA zip drive, these can be found on eBay cheap, you would have to remove the cover but it's easy. The G4 has all the internal wiring.
-you can install a SCSI PCI card in the G4 which you can then plug into with your current Zip drive. This might be the route I would go as it means the disks written on your zip will be read by the same drive and the least amount of work.
-networking is also possible though sometimes this can be slow or problematic I find when you get into different OS. What you would need is a hub. Although you may also need an ethernet card as my recollection of that Mac makes me think it used a comm slot 10T or a card in the PCI slot so it may not have shipped with one originally.
All of the options are inexpensive, unless you get into the hub and card option but not outrageous if you shop in the secondhand market like eBay.

  • Help! Can't open side panel of power mac G4! I need in there!

Hi, I just bought a powermac G4 for my retired parents and they need to hit the reset button but can't open the side panel to get in. They have tried moving the lockable cover latch and pulling the side handle but it seems to be jammed. Any suggestions. They live 400 miles away in Scotland so I can't try anything myself. Heellllppp!
    Any assistance most appreciated,
    Max

Well, no one else has replied, so I'll make a suggestion.
Place the left side of the G4 on the floor. Now push down quite hard on the top (right side) panel near the pull-up lever with one hand while pulling up on the lever. Hopefully the side panel will release.

  • Lost connection between Power Book G4 and Brother Printer/Fax.  Need help.

I am a new Mac user and until recently had a successful wireless connection to the Brother printer/fax. Address # 192.168.1.100 While printing a job I ran out of ink. I turned the printer off to replace the cartridge and lost the connection to the wireless powerbook. The printer works because it prints jobs from the PC that it is connected to by wire. So far I have clicked on "system preferences", clicked print and fax, Clicked + ato add printer and put the address in. Nothing is working. The message says, cannot connect to printer. I need serious, detailed help. My husband connects everything and gets it running and he just left for Iraq! Thanks so much!!

Hello! In the printer setup utility choose "show Jobs" and see if you can click on "start jobs". It's probably gotten stuck because it ran out of ink. Tom

  • High CPU usage during 15 acquiring analog input and write to file (suggestion needed)

    Helllo everybody,
I have a problem about the usage of CPU now i am using a realtime target (PXI-8186) with Daq (PXI-6259) to get 15 analog signals at the rate of 10kHz
at first i try to get signal at different rate but i found out that all of the channels share the same clock so i get the highest frequency that i desired  after that i do
some data manipulation with displaying charts  and use shift register to stack data in array of string  finally i write the data to spreadsheet every  5 second, by doing this the CPU usage
is always 100% and reduce by the time the file is recordedto 71% or so and then start to increase to 100% again. I think  the things that make CPU usage too high are
    1. Time loop: because i set the period to be 10ms maybe this is too low.
    2. The shift registered: may be it use too much overhead memory but i do not know other method to stack data before writing to a file
    3. RAM too low: The RAM of PXI is only 256mb
    4. Poor program arrangement: Because i am new to labview the program is not arranging correctly or i may use some inappropriate structure.
My program is very messy sorry about it because i avoid using SubVI and i am new to labview. Please help any suggestion is apperciated. Thanks in advance.

It looks like you are writing your data to disk every so often.  For that reason, I recommend making it based on the number of samples you have instead of the time.  With that you can preallocate your arrays with constants going into the shift registers.  You then use Replace Array Subset to update your arrays.  When you write to the file, make sure you go back to overwriting the beginning of your array.  This will greatly reduce the amount of time you spend reallocating memory and will reduce your memory usage.

  • How to migrate Power View reports and respective BISM connections from one SharePoint environment to another?

    Hello All,
We have a few Power View reports and respective BISM connections that need to be migrated from our DEV SharePoint 2013 site to our TEST Sharepoint 2013 site. The reports have been "migrated" over but they do not work. Eventually, I just recreated
all the Power View reports from the BISM connections.
We have to do one more Sharepoint migration, and I'd rather not have to recreate the reports. What do we need to do in order to migrate the Power View reports seamlessly?
    Thanks,
    Carter

I created a new BISM in the new SharePoint site with the same name and modified the cinneciton string in the report and uploaded the PowerView Reports ( download from the existing SP site ).
Please see the below link to modify the connection string in the PowerView report.

  • Additional files will need to be installed error -- cannot pdf a simple MS Word doc

Just installed Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium. For some reason it will not let me pdf a word document. When I open acrobat and click on "Create" pdf from file---then select the document I want to pdf...it tells me I cannot and says" Additional files will need to be installed to create pdf from this file. You must have adminstrator priviledges to install these files. Please contact your local administrator."
I have tried this with many different files with the same message. Can anyone help me?

THe additional files statement is related to the PDF Maker files that some solutions are pointed to by others in this discussion. The fact that you can not make a PDF by printing to the Adobe PDF printer indicates more fundamental problems that need to be solved first. Try printing to the printer with Print-to-file selected. Then open this file in Distiller to see if a PDF is created.
If not, the Distiller window should show the errors of the process. When printing to the Adobe PDF printer, if it gets to Distiller the errors are stored in a log file, not displayed on screen necessarily.
If the PDF is created, then go back and try printing directly. If this latter step does not work (your message suggests it will fail), then check for AcroTray running in the background. This is a required application for any of the Acrobat PDF creation tools to work, except when using the print-to-file option I just mentioned.
After these steps work, then start looking at PDF Maker, since it is simply a preprocessor for the printer. When you open a DOC file in Acrobat, it is also just using PDF Maker by way of WORD. All of these processes are layered and not independent. I hope this helps you see the steps for diagnosis.

  • I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

Do it with a Firewire cable (buy a 800/400 adapter if you need it) - the USB transfer takes a much longer time.
Start up your old PowerMac G4 holding down the "T" key, for target disk mode.
On your new MacBook Pro open "Migration Assistant" in your utilities folder.
Connect the 2 computers by firewire cable and follow the prompts in Migration Assistant.

  • How do I back up files and reinstall original disks on my Power Mac G-4 (2000)

How do I back up files and reinstall original disks on my Power Mac G-4 (yr. 2000). I know that sounds basic but I have very few techno skills. So please "talk down" to me. I had a newer PC (2005) but the hard drive crashed and I am trying to resuscitate this old mac until I can afford to buy a new one. I am in the middle of writing a book (based on Steve Job's life) and must have SOMETHING to write with. Anyone have a better one they can loan me? I am in Maine on the coast. BTW this machine seems to have trouble reading or formatting most CD-disks. Can anyone recommend a type and brand that works well with this model? Thanks for any assistance anyone can render. Here is what I have:
    Machine Name:          Power Mac G4
      Machine Model:          PowerMac3,4
      CPU Type:          PowerPC G4  (2.9)
      Number Of CPUs:          1
      CPU Speed:          467 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU):          1 MB
      Memory:          768 MB
      Bus Speed:          133 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          4.2.8f1

Why do you want to reformat the drive?  Is it because the machine is running slow?
Be sure to backup you important files, like the book, daily.
The cheapest approach would be to try to figure out why the machine is running slow.  Be sure to try safe boot.
You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
    1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.
    2) You should run disk utility
          Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
          a) verify the disk
          b) update your permissions.
    3) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive
         is being checked.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
    4) Another way to correct filesystem problems is into single use mode.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
Basically, you hold down the command + s key then  powering on your machine. The command key
has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar.
    4) You may want to run applejack to clean up your machine.
          http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
    6) Run hardware diagnostics.  It's good for a sanity check.
The older versions of ccc were donationware.
Here are two utilities for making a complete backup of your internal hard drive.  I've recommend using one of these so that you can create a bootable system  on your external hard drive. ( PPC require a firewire connected drive. )  Once created, you can run your system from the external drive.  Hold down the option key on your keyboard then power on your machine.  This will bring you in startup manager click on the drive image you wish to boot then click on the arrow key to the right.
"Clone, synchronize, backup. Schedule and forget it."

"SuperDuper is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless."

For your addressbook, export the files to vCard on the PowerMac, then bring them over to your Mac Pro. For your iPhoto, copy the Users -> yourname -> Pictures folder to your Desktop on the Mac Pro, and open iPhoto on the Mac Pro holding the command and option keys.  Select the library file from that Pictures folder and open it.  It should import all the pictures into iPhoto as part of the rebuild process.  Other PowerPC to Intel migration issues are covered here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295

  • See and copy files from a Power Mac without keyboard and monitor

A friend gave me his G4 Power Mac. I think it is a Quicksilver. (I will post some pics of both the front and back on Flickr if anyone wants to see it.) I didn't get the keyboard or monitor cuz I forgot I would need the keyboard to use Firewire Target Disc mode on it. I just need to see what files are on it (and probably copy whatever ones I need onto my newer Powerbook.)
I have a 17" Powerbook G4 DL and a Powerbook Firewire (500mhz, running OS 9.2.2), and another G4 Power Mac ADP set up to always start up in Firewire Target Mode so I can use it like an external drive (which I never do...) and a bunch of older Macs (LC 580, SE...)
How can I get onto this new machine? I need to see what files are on there. I do not have access to another monitor but I might be able to borrow a USB keyboard so I can start it up in Target Mode. Is there anything I can do before I scrounge for a USB keyboard?
I have tried connecting by Firewire and ethernet with both Powerbooks. The Power Mac isn't showing up either way. I am pretty sure it has a CD drive but pushing on the door (one of two on the front) doesn't open it up.
I am assuming the Power Mac is running OSX.
    Many thanks.

I think it is a Quicksilver
It may be easier to look at the rear panel for some labeling. It may be silk-screened on with white paint and a bit hard to see.A four-digit model number with "M" as a leader will pretty much nail down the model without taking photos that may not show much.Quicksilvers can have models number M8360, M8493, or M8493 depending on the config.
For snopping the drive, it may be easier to pull the drive from the G4 and use one of these extremely handy gadgets:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/
to mount the bare G4 drive on your working PowerBook with OSX. It will show up on the PB as an external drive and you can see what's there. The adaptor will be serviceable for more than just checking this hard drive. Anyone with multiple Macs will get a lot of use from it.
Remember that some third-party keyboards do not recognize Mac start-up key combos, and that some current Aluminum Apple boards may not work correctly with older Macs. The Al board with numeric keypad (here) says it will work with Tiger. The wireless ones and the short "non-keypad" version require Leopard or higher.

You need to tell us A) what app did you create those files with? and B) what format are they in (.doc, .txt, etc)?
It may be possible to just transfer the files and your font to another machine without conversion depending on how they were made.
Where did you get the BengaliCS font?

You need to reinstall OS X:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
