Power Mac and Display - power surge?

I hope someone can help even if it's common sense...
I had my Power Mac on for a while and all of a sudden a pop/click sounded and the power went off for the apple mac and the display/monitor.
Neither turned back on and there's no sign of power so I assumed the fuses need changing; however I replaced them and both the display and mac unit still will not turn on or show any power.
Does anyone have any suggestions what else could be wrong? Since it's affecting both display and unit, I can only assume it's power-related. Much appreciated, thanks.
Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4)   Using Logic primarily with plug-ins - no internet connection.

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
Assuming the display is powered by the G5 video card and therefore by the G5 Power Supply Unit - and that you have taken the appropriate steps to ensure that the mains power up to the G5 is working ok - when the mains power to the G5 is first connected and turned on, there is usually a 'relay-click' sound at the back of the G5.
If you don't hear this, and you have a "Late 2005" dual-core G5
http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G5_Late2005.html
then it's possibly the 'Pop of Death' in the Power Supply Unit which would qualify under this recall, sorry, repair extension
http://www.apple.com/support/powermac/powersupply/repairextension/
If you do hear the relay-click, then you could try a PMU/SMU reset
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341
If still no go and you have another, earlier G5 which is not covered by the repair extension above, it sounds like a case for AppleCare, if you have it, or the repair shop. Sorry.
Please post again if you have any questions. Good Luck.

  • How can I play a dvd on my Mac and display it through Apple TV

I want to use my DVD drive on my mac to play back movies through my apple tv2. I notice that on my iPad, iPhone, iTunes on my computer all have the AirPlay option to display the video on my TV through Apple TV. I do not want to burn my DVD onto my Mac and play through iTunes becasue its a hassle.

One thing you can do is to play the DVD in your Mac using DVD Player instead of iTunes, and then, turn on AirPlay Mirroring to stream your computer's display to your Apple TV > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
If your Mac isn't compatible with AirPlay Mirroring, use a third-party app like AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com This is the only option, because the Apple TV isn't compatible with discs
Logical but it won't work - DVD player output will be a grey checkerboard pattern.
Apple apps prevent Airplay of DVD content at low level presumably for some copy protection reason.
VLC player is believed to work.

  • Storing sent email on mac and displaying "to" field

I am trying to transfer my sent email from two accounts to my home computer and store them there, displayed by "to" field like sent folders usually are. Yet when I transfer them to my mac, apple mail only seems able to display them by "from" field.

Kappy is correct that you can't do what you want with POP3 mail. However a workaround I'm thinking about is to use another email account to pull the mail from your Comcast account. Then configure your devices to check that new mail account, which will be IMAP, of course. (I do something similar with my Roadrunner mail.) If you want to, you can leave the Mail settings to still send mail through Comcast's SMTP servers (or whatever you have it set to.) It will just receive mail on the new IMAP server.
The only free email account that I know of offhand that will pull mail and allow for external access is Hotmail. (Yahoo mail will pull POP mail, but you can't access it externally without paying extra. Gmail doesn't seem to have the ability to pull mail from other accounts. Correct me if I'm wrong.) The catch I'm having with Hotmail is that it seems to take a while before everything is synced again. It's likely due to the way my Windows Mobile phone is configured, but it does seem to work if I'm patient.
Technically, Hotmail is not IMAP, but OSX Mail does work with Hotmail so it may be sufficient for you. At the very least it's free so you can try it and not waste $$$ if it doesn't work for you.

  • How can I connect multiple devices to Mac mini display port? I need to connect a Canon 5D to my Mac and display the result on a VGA video projector. I am using mini hdmi to mini display for the camera. Can I connect the VGA to any other port?

Hi there I am connecting a Canon 5D to my laptop trying to use it as a webcam trough camtwist.
At the same time I need to output the streaming to a videoprojector.
The cam is connected to the mini display port do there is no port available for the VGA cable anymore.
Do I need to use a different port for the projector? Should I buy a video card?
Can't connect the camera via USB as that is too slow and it will freeze.

Let the battery fully darain. After charging for an least an hour try a reset and restore. Use Recovery mode if necessary.
If not successful, then time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

One way to add Facicons back is to visit those sites again.
It is time consuming if you really want to have all those back.

  • Power Surge Criples Mac Book

I'm in Central America, a friend was using his MacBook when the power surged, the computer was plugged in at the time. The next time he went to turn it on, only the apple icon was present on the screen. Nothing else will come up. He has tried to take the battery off and put it back in, but it didn't help anything. Any suggestions will be helpful on this one. Is there another way to reset the computer while it is off? Thanks for your answers.

It sounds like your system may have been corrupted by not being shut down properly. You can try repairing it with Disk Utility, though if that doesn't work you may need to try a stronger tool such as Diskwarrior unless you elect to just do an archive and install (keeping users and preferences - make sure you select that).
Boot from the installer disk, select language if applicable, choose utilities, run Disk Utility and verify (and repair if necessary) the drive. You can verify a drive from DU on your main drive while booted but I have found this can result in incorrect reporting of errors. To repair your drive you have to run it from a drive other than the boot drive anyway.

    [Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751]
From BDaqua (couldn't have said it better):
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer (Edit: Do not use this disc if it is not the same general version as what you have currently on your computer, e.g. use a Tiger disc for a Tiger drive, not a Panther disc), then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
If you don't have an installer disc available you can try effecting repairs using [fsk in Single User Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214].

  • Lost Power to Mac and Applications deleted

I have a new iMac which was supposedly connected to a UPS which turns out was faulty. Anyway I lost power to my building, which caused a power spike to hit the Mac, and it lost power. When I turned it back on, it was missing the applications that I had running at the time the power was lost.
When I went to run Safari or Mail from the dock it displayed a question mark, when I searched the hard disk for the applications they were no longer there, completely missing, not in the trash, no where, searched the hard disk and none were found. I have had to reinstall the applications again in order to enable them to run.
    Has anyone heard of this?

    Apple finally resolved this problem

  • Power surge mac mini power light comes on but no video

after a power surge my mac mini 2010 2.63 ghz intel duel core processor 8mb ram 320GB onboard hard drive 2 2T external hard drives powering 2 21inch monitors.
power light comes on but no video

"Failure to chime" is not one problem.
¿ Is the power light flashing? This indicates not enough working RAM to Chime and Start up.
Without the Chime, you get nowhere. The conventional way to debug this situation is to remove everything that could be drawing too much power and build back up from there.
    Remove AC power.
Press the power-on button and hold for a quarter minute. (This does an SMC Reset.)
    remove all drives,
remove all but one unit (a pair on older Mac Pros) of RAM
Remove the graphics card, and all PCIe cards.
Restore AC power, wait a quarter minute, then power on.
    ¿Chime?
--Yes, add the graphics card only and proceed to debug.
--No. if the fans are spinning, check the Voltages at a power connector such as a DVD drive connection.

  • My IMAC seems to have died after power surge. It shut down and won't start.  What shall I do?

my IMAC seems to have died after power surge. It shut down and won't start.  What shall I do?

I would recommend you try an SMC reset at this point:
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If that fails to solve it, it is probable that the power surge damaged some of your iMac's hardware components, and will need to be repaired at an Apple Authorized Service Center.

  • IPOD Shuffle not recognized by computer, and caused a  USB power surge

Device is not recognized by computer, and I tried the listed support recommendations.
The problem originated when I plugged the IPOD shuffle directly into the computer USB ( not using a hub), and this caused a warning window to appear saying unknown device has caused a power surge to this port, and most be removed. Prior to this event, the IPOD shuffle has worked (with direct contact with computer usb or through a powered highspeed usb hub) without issue for nearly 1 year. Any taker's on this issue? Thanks.

    Hi JBR,
Go to your control panel and click on Install/Uninstall programs. Scroll down and see if you have multiple versions of the ipod updater installed on your computer. If you do, then uninstall both versions. Reboot your computer.
Next, go to the downloads page and download/install the 1-10-2006 ipod updater. Once installed, go to your start programs and select ipod updater from there. Plug in your ipod and wait a moment. If it's like mine, it'll recognize your ipod and then you can do a "restore" for a clean format.
After that, open itunes and life should be good.
    Hope this helps!

  • Best way to format my 16GB flash drive for Mac and PC transferring large power point files?

best way to format my 16GB flash drive for Mac and PC transferring large power point files?

format flash drive in Exfat for transferring files between Mac and Pc.
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

Is your device recognized by your computer? If yes, copy the pictures and videos as shown in this article:
Copying personal photos and videos from iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer
If it is not recognized, try this first: iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
Disable autosync in iTunes, right click on it in the device list and choose "transfer purchases" to copy apps and other media bought in iTunes to your new library.
Do the same again and choose "backup", to create a manual backup without syncing.
Since your device will be erased due to the new iTunes library during the first sync, you can use this backup afterwards to restore your settings and data.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer before you start, to be able to merge calendars and contacts.

  • I have a 2011 MBA currently running OS X 10.9.2.  The household power in this area is erratic and subject to surges and full cut-offs.  Do I need a UPS, is auto shut-off available?

Will the battery protect the MBA in the event of a power issue?  Will the MBA interface with a UPS with a USB connection?  Will this allow auto shut-off if the MBA is asleep?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you are using your computer during a brown-out you won't notice a thing because it has a battery. If there is a power-surge one of two things will happen: 1) the power adaptor will handle it, perhaps getting fried in the process or 2) it will be overwhelmed and the computer will also fry. Plugging the power adaptor into a high quality surge protector is a very good idea. Note: surge protectors do 'wear' out. Some have warning lights that indicate this has happened but the techs at work don't trust them. They recommend that you give yourself a new surge protector on your birthday.
