Power Mac Dual 2.5 G5 won't start up!

Downloaded Mac OS X Server 10.4.8 Build 8L117 {Power PC} for testing purposes and the installer upgraded my system. Upon restart, I get the progress bar loading all the way but then just stops and does nothing - won't go to the login window. I have no USB bus power, so I can't even start up from the CD! Why would the software disable my USB bus? I'm stuck and can do nothing - any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Power Mac Dual 2.5 GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi Radcock, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
Hopefully your data is backed-up.
You could try:
Disconnect everything from the G5 and let it stand for 30 mins.
Then connect only a display, wired keyboard and mouse, and the mains.
Reset the PMU/SMU (bottom of the page)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341
Observe static precautions (keep one hand on the G5 casing and avoid clothing with unnatural fibres) and make sure to press the button once only.
If the drive won't open if you hold down the mouse button on restart - with the G5 powered-down, slide down the silver optical drive gate and insert a strong, straightened paper clip in the emergency eject hole shown in Figure 3 here (you don't have to remove the drive)(it is a mechanical release, so you will have to slide the tray out by hand)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88215
Put the system disc in the tray and, if it doesn't close on re-start, push it in gently, and hold down the 'C' key and see if it will boot from the supplied system disc.
If 'C' doesn't work on Startup, you could try the 'Option(alt)' key. Maybe even disconnect the internal drive and see if that will force it to boot from the system DVD.
If it boots, you could run Disk Utility and see what it makes of your internal boot drive
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1018.html
but note
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301269
and use only the most recent Disk Utility you have to repair your boot drive.
You may have to erase the internal drive and re-install OS X and combo up to 10.4.7

Please post again if none of this helps.

  • Power Mac Dual 1.8 Ghz: How do I connect to wireless network?

    HELP!!!
I have this Power Mac Dual 1.8 Ghz with 10.4.11 OS. I used to use wire cable to connect the internet, but now the place I rent recently only provides wireless network. I was able to connect wireless network with my Windows Laptop.
Question: How do I connect my Dual 1.8 OS 10.4.11 with wireless network? I only see Internal Modern, Built-in Ethernet and Build-in FireWire options.

You can go the OWM route and get the airport extreme card and antenna

Google the part numbers for more vender choices,
Or, you need to get a PCI WiFi card and antenna. BDAqua or Japamac have posted alternatives which are actually a little cheaper than the Apple parts.
The third alternative is a USB-based wireless adapter.

  • Power Mac Dual G5 2Ghz won't start up

    Hi,
Last night I was playing a DVD on my dual G5, and the superdrive started to make unusually loud, weird noises. I tried to restart the computer from the apple menu, but it wouldn't. Then I tried to force quit all my apps, but it wouldn't either. So I proceeded to push the power button for 5 secs. and that worked. Now the computer won't start. I tried resseting both the PRAM and the PMU, but it still won't start. All I get is the power light fading in and out, like it's breathing.
Any ideas or suggestions as to what may be going on?
    Thank you ver much,
    Daniel

I have the same problem with a different twist. I was playing a DVD based game last night, logged out to go to bed, then this morning the computer won't wake up, won't reboot, there's no fan or hard drive sounds, but the status light just glows, no flashes. The only way to turn it off was to unplug the system. When I plug the computer back in the light comes back on but it still won't start.
There was a power outage this morning and several over the last few days. Otherwise there were no other changes to my system. The most recent installations were Quake and Age of Empires III (the game referred to above).
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • 10.5 on Power Mac Dual G5

When I tried to install Leopard on my Dual G5 Power Mac tower, I was plagued with a multitude of problems...most of which involve my Adobe CS2, my printers and iTunes 7.5...
Is there anyone else with my kind of problems, and can you offer any solutions?

My dual G5 has 2 internal disks, so I cleaned the second one up and installed Leopard on it and migrated everything over from Tiger which is still on the first disk.
No problems and it's now a dual-boot box.
You might check to see if your Adobe is Leopard compatible.
    What is the printer problem?
Are you a subcriber to iTunes or do you just use it to catalog music?
There might be an authorization problem if you are a subscriber. I read somewhere it was best to deauthorize it and then reauthorize it after the upgrade, but since I don't use it that way, I don't know.

  • Power Mac G5 DP 1.8, won't to enter in Open Firmware, and no OF comm. exec.

    Hi Guys,
It seems to strange but my Power Mac G5 DP 1.8 Ghz, cannot enter in the OF and no commands are accepted by the OF (like boot from cd pressing C, or reset Pram, or everything else)
I'm not sure but probably after the last upgrade ( november 2004 if i remember well) but i'm not sure.
    i try all this things:
    1) reset SMU by disconnect the power cord for 15 minutes
    2) change the Keyboard
    3) delete the Password for OF (but didn't sets up)
    4) i use the cd with the Apple test, but all is reported as good
The problem is affecting also the sleep mode, when my Mac go to sleep there're no way to wake up !!!, i can only force the power off.
    HELP !!!
I'm alone with this problem on G5 DP 1.8 ??
I see many post regarding problem on G5, but i see only on a SP 1.8 !!!
    Anyone have idea ?
    thx
    Fabio

    Sorry, i miss some info,
when you press the key on the keyboard nothing happen, and one thing strange are 3 "stock" of noising sound immediately after the white screen with the apple appear on the screen.
After the boot everythings are good, the system is stable, is fast, and the sound is nice.
Nothing could thing to a problem, if i wont to start with another disk or from a cd, the only way is to chose it from the system preferences.
Also the sound volume is "saved" in the pram,so if i shutdown the Mac with no sound, when the mac start the sound is at level 0, so the pram is working good.

  • Launching Color on a 2.7 Power mac dual core - not

I have a 2.7 ghz power mac. I've upgraded final cut studio through 5 up to the crossover to intel and then to 6. When I try to start Color it says Open GL not able to start - turnoff 'video desktop'. (the same programme runs on my octo core intel mac)
Question 1: Will color run on power PC macs and
Question 2. how do I turn off video desktop whatever that is - and
Question 3. why does it conflict with open GL
Question 4. Is there a color forum and why can't I see it if there is ?
The answer to 3 of course is not that important
    Thanks in advance

Ok, that one is easy, just go into your system preferences, Decklinki settings and uncheck the "Enable Video Desktop" box. Tada, it's starting now.
As for the machine, I own the same setup and Color and Motion 3 just work fine, but I've put an ATI X800XT in that G5 for it to work.
    Best regards,

  • Power Mac Dual 2.7Ghz rebooting

I have a G5 machine that reboots itself at various intervals when using. It could be on screensaver or using MS word or playing a game. It also seems to be getting worse.
After being shutdown for about 3 or 4 seconds it reboots itself.
I have checked all the fans etc and even gently hoovered the machine out to remove dust. All fans are working and there is no water leakage. When it does shutdown the fans are on but not full. The temperature of the CPU's don't go over 75C during hard usage, when you hear the fans speed up.
    Anybody got any idea?
    Thanks
    G5 2.7Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.6) 3Gb RAM, Twin 450GB Hard Disk

Hello NeilSBarnett, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
Presuming that you are not seeing this screen
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227
and that you have not recently added any new hardware, you could have a look at Applications - Utilities - Console - Logs: system.log and console.log for unusual entries at the time of the shutdown.
The symptoms sound similar to those of a RAM problem.
However, before opening up the G5, you could boot from the system DVD and Repair Disc and Permissions
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1018.html
and run the Apple Hardware Test
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/aht.html
Note that the AHT does not find all RAM problems - you may have to try running with just the supplied original RAM - and maybe re-seating that. The RAM D-I-Y instructions are here
    http://www.apple.com/support/powermac/doityourself/memory.html
You could try disconnecting all non-essential peripherals and leaving just display, wired keyboard and mouse; unplug from the mains and leave for at least 30 mins; re-connect mains plug to G5,(to earth the casing), then reset the PMU
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341
Note static precautions and the warning to press the button once only.
But first of all - check the logs.
Please post again with anything you find in the logs, and the results from any other things that you try.

mac book pro 17 inch and it won't start and it beep

It will make it easier to help you w/ your problem to know the exact model, size, year built, RAM installed and OS you're running. A little history will also help.
    "it beep"
    If it's 3 beeps that's usually a RAM problem.

  • Second internal HD for my Power MAC Dual G5 2,7 GHz ?

    Hey guys
My Mac has a Western Digital caviar ( WDC - WD2500JD ) which was there right from the start and since I’m going through big reorganization of my computer’s music production I decided to add one more internal HD.
I’ve been researching for hours - but still - I was not able to come up with good solution thanks to all the information I have got.
Before I started with research my choice was Seagate barracuda SATA - 320 Gb or 500 Gb or Western digital Raptor 150 GB.
Unfortunately I’ve found there has been some problems with seagate barracuda 7200.9 and 7200.10 on powermac G5 and basically similar thing with WD Raptor 150 GB.
This is leaving me with Raptor 74 GB which is too small or Maxtor or Hitachi HD which I’m not sure about.
From what I’ve read another choice would be to buy PCI host card and instead of go onboard with seagate or raptor I would have to do it this way. - That apparently would work with both mentioned drives.
So here are my two question
    1) Does anybody know what brand and type of HD would work in my situation ?
    2) Is the PCI host card way to go ? Would that be the solution to make latest seagate or raptor drive work and and also way to improve the performance instead of going onboard.
( I’m no expert that seems to me like I have to spend extra money for PCI card to make my SATA HD work )
    I would appreciate any feedback
    Thanks for your time
    Milan
    Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Search Drive Upgrade DB
In the past there were some drives that didn't work properly.
Seagate drives are fine for video, but don't play as nicely where smaller files are concerned, making it less than stellar for boot drives.
the problem is bad enough that Apple only recently updated the SATA chipset used in Mac Pro (Intel) systems that seems to correct the problem.
On a G5 you may also want to jumper the drive to limit it to 150MB/sec "mode" (G5 only supports SATA 1.0, not SATA II).
mbean (search for userid) had this to day:
Michael Bean of AMUG wrote in reply to my question on write performance with the Seagate 7200.10 drives with PCI SATA cards (vs onboard SATA):
" I saw your question today about the performance of the Seagate 7200.10 on a SATA host adapter. (i.e. was the low write performance seen with onboard SATA.
... the 7200.10 does work properly on a SATA host adapter with read and write speeds of approximately 72MB/sec on a Quad or an original PowerMac G5 2.0GHz Dual. (single drive performance?)
However, if you install that same 7200.10 as a non-RAID volume internally on a PowerMac G5, or a Mac Pro internal SATA bus, the write speed is decreased by approximately 40% to 44MB/sec while the read speed stays at 72MB/sec.
I have sent these details to Seagate and they have a PowerMac G5 available for testing this problem. There is no fix yet but I hope that one will eventually be developed. You can see reviews displaying the performance of the 7200.10 model used on a SATA host adapter at:
    http://www.amug.org/
Amazingly, (using PCI controller) the 7200.10 performs within 2MB/sec along the entire line from 750GB to 250GB.

  • Power Mac Dual G5 (March '04) freezes after disk reformat & Tiger Reinstall

Looking for some help ... read many of the G5 related threads but not sure what to do next.
Within the last month or two the machine started just shutting itself down (at first I thought the kids were doing it!) - it would also just freeze up. But it only happend once a week or so.
Then it happend more frequently ... long story short, since I have a full back I reformated the drive and tried re-installing the O/S. On the first attempt it did not make it through the install, it hung on checking the DVD. So I let it sit and the following evening, I tried it again. And it actually installed, then I ran the software update and the first set of updates went fine - and I rebooted. I then went to run additional software updates from apple and it hung. I rebooted, and now it hangs again after a few minutes.
I did run the hardware diagnostic from the CD, which ran for a little over two hours - but everything checked out.
What could be the problem. Both CPU's are running??? All the RAM (4 Gigs) was factory installed.
Thanks for any help... I am keeping the family happy with my old iMac (the one that looks like a lamp) - running Tiger that friggin machine still rocks!
    Cheers,
    Tom

    Hi Curtis,
I'm not sure though if 80C is normal for a G5 or not. I noticed that when it was unplugged that it wouldn't retain the time
Nope, not normal, way too hot, above 70°C... If you have any temps in the 70°C/160°F range, that's likely it.
Have you blown the dust out of everything with high pressure air?\

  • My Power Mac Dual 1.8 shows only one CPU under the hardware tab is this OK?

I thought it should say two CPUs.
    Thanks

I'd love to help you but you should elaborate a little bit. If you're talking about the icon, it will only show the one icon for both processors. If you're talking about the processor palette, that's a different issue.
Did you happen to install the Apple CHUD (Computer Hardware Understanding Development) Tools? The CHUD tools feature the ability to turn off individual CPUs while the system's running, and if that's the case, the System Information would be changed to match the current CPU count.
If you've never used Apple's CHUD Tools, then either the information is flawed or one of the CPUs failed.

  • Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) won't start After Effects CS5.5 because it's a powerpc app!?

I've had CS 5.5 Master Collection installed on my Mac since it came out. All the CS 5/5.5 apps I've used up to now have worked fine, in 64-bit mode (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, InDesign). Now I need to use After Effects, but I can't get it to start.
First it said it couldn't rename a Workspaces.xml file in the preferences directory in my home folder. In fact, there was no such file there at all. Nothing to rename. So, I uninstalled After Effects using its uninstaller; then reinstalled it from the install DVDs.
Now, it fails on startup saying the After Effects CS5.5 application cannot be run because PowerPC apps are no longer supported. True: OS X no longer runs apps that require Rosetta. CS 5.5 is does not require Rosetta; it's compatible with Lion. The OS 10.7 Known Issues KB article says nothing about After Effects: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/905/cpsid_90508.html?promoid=JBQYY
So...what's going on? I need this thing working for a project with a deadline! I don't get it. Anybody seen this before? (I didn't find anything in the discussions about it, nor Google...)

Interesting article, but I knew I was leaving PowerPC apps behind when I moved to OS 10.7, and Adobe claims that After Effects CS 5.5 is fully compatible with Lion. But you must be right about prefs; there's gotta be something causing the Mac OS to think this version of CS is ancient...
Since my initial message, I've tried and failed to find any details about how to select the right prefs to delete. I also ran Disk Utility to repair permissions on my system drive. That got rid of the PowerPC error:) Now on startup AE says mediacore fails to initialize. I can choose to quit or continue on that error, but continuing just results in another error that says dynamiclinkmanager unexpectedly quit, and then AE locks up and I have to force quit it. Not much progress!
No other answers on this so far... Before I uninstall the entire Creative Suite and then delete all Adobe system and hidden files everywhere, any more suggestions? Or a list of the right prefs I should trash?
