Welcome to the forum.
Was your Beige Mac booting up OK previously? When
did this beeping and freezing start? Did you add,
delete, or change anything, hardware or software
around the time that the problem started?
With the information you supplied so far, just a shot
in the dark but, it seems like some required startup
extension has been deleted or made inactive.
Give us more information and we may be able to help
you more.

If I can rember correctly, i beleive it started after completing a disk first aid on the system. I think I rember seeing a file named ___sprocket**###!!? I wish I could be of more discriptive.

  • Where can I get rid of an old Power Mac G3 Beige?

Where is the best place to get rid of an old Power Mac G3 Beige? Are there sites out there where Mac enthusiasts would buy it or its part? It has no hard drive. Also have the Multiple Scan 720 Display Monitor.

Glen.. I'm looking for some 256 sticks of RAM - PC-66 or 100 will do.. and if you want to move that CPU card - is it a Sonnet ZIF?
I have a Yosemite blue and white G3 that's living here while it's owner gets his living situation sorted out.. it was in rough shape as it sat in a few inches of water and is a bit corroded but not so much it's dead.
I'm cobbling it into a bit more stable, modern state for him so his 11 year old daughter can use it with her iPod. So far I have an 80GB hard drive and a Lite-on CD burner installed. I don't have much in the way of $$ right now, but can pay postage, if you want to part bits out. I can mail you a G3/266 processor to swap it out if you still want to have a working machine to part with.
I was going to use the bits from my beige for the Yosemite, but the Quicksilver that landed on my door turned out to be a boat anchor, so I bit the bullet and swapped out a power supply and got the G3 working again as a music server.
Am still on the hunt for freebie, useable parts..

Hi Aaron, should work if it meets these requirements...
    System requirements
Supported Computers:[2]PowerMac G3, G4, early PowerMac G5, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 orG4, or iBook computer
Amount of RAM Required: 128 megabytes (MB) (Although 256 MB to 512 MB is highly recommended by many people who have used Mac OS X v10.2.8 as the real amount of RAM used when only the Operating System is running is around 200 MB, but it can be run with as low as 96 MB) although it will not run at full speed.
Processor Type: PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 running at 233 MHz or higher.

  • Power Mac Dual 2.5 G5 won't start up!

Downloaded Mac OS X Server 10.4.8 Build 8L117 {Power PC} for testing purposes and the installer upgraded my system. Upon restart, I get the progress bar loading all the way but then just stops and does nothing - won't go to the login window. I have no USB bus power, so I can't even start up from the CD! Why would the software disable my USB bus? I'm stuck and can do nothing - any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Power Mac Dual 2.5 GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi Radcock, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
    Hopefully your data is backed-up.
    You could try:
Disconnect everything from the G5 and let it stand for 30 mins.
Then connect only a display, wired keyboard and mouse, and the mains.
Reset the PMU/SMU (bottom of the page)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341
Observe static precautions (keep one hand on the G5 casing and avoid clothing with unnatural fibres) and make sure to press the button once only.
If the drive won't open if you hold down the mouse button on restart - with the G5 powered-down, slide down the silver optical drive gate and insert a strong, straightened paper clip in the emergency eject hole shown in Figure 3 here (you don't have to remove the drive)(it is a mechanical release, so you will have to slide the tray out by hand)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88215
Put the system disc in the tray and, if it doesn't close on re-start, push it in gently, and hold down the 'C' key and see if it will boot from the supplied system disc.
If 'C' doesn't work on Startup, you could try the 'Option(alt)' key. Maybe even disconnect the internal drive and see if that will force it to boot from the system DVD.
If it boots, you could run Disk Utility and see what it makes of your internal boot drive
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1018.html
    but note
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301269
and use only the most recent Disk Utility you have to repair your boot drive.
You may have to erase the internal drive and re-install OS X and combo up to 10.4.7

Please post again if none of this helps.

  • Power Mac G3 (beige) Pulling large files w/out network

I have an old Mac G3 from which I need to pull images. They would be large .jpgs and .tiffs so using the floppy is unfeasible. At this point, IT won't let me network it (which would solve this, obviously). Short of locating an old zip drive (one 25 pin IDE connection available in back), are there any other alternatives? I've looked at removing and docking the hard drive, but that seems to be available only if I had a USB port on the system... I really need the HD to USB to external interface, but to still connect the HD to the Mac. Thanks. MG

"Our company is strickly PC and Linux, so I don't have a Mac available to interface with."
Unless you install a software program like "MacDrive" on one of the PCs so that a Mac-formatted drive is recognized, the adapter mentioned by Allan isn't going to be of much use to you.  Additionally, that type of adapter isn't platform-specific, which means that you can purchase one at a PC store and it would work with PCs and Macs.  I bought/use this one, which is about half the price of the one at Other World Computing.  You referenced the G3's "25 pin IDE connection available in back."  That's a DB-25 SCSI bus port, and although it resembles the parallel port found on the back of older PCs, it's a different/incompatible interface.  A suitable Zip drive would be a SCSI type, not a parallel port type.  If you had access to a SCSI Zip drive (100 MB or 250 MB), you could transfer the files to PC-formatted Zip disks and then use a Zip drive designed for connection to a USB port, to transfer files from the disks to a PC.  Depending on the OS version that the beige G3 is running, you could install a USB PCI card and transfer the files to a flash drive.  Realistically, the G3 should be running OS 9.1 and you'd need to perform a custom installation of the same OS, to install the necessary USB support files.  It just gets more complicated, in terms of the hardware and software upgrades needed to accomplish this.  I'd recommend removing the G3's hard drive and using the USB-to-IDE adapter, which will require a software program on the PC to enable reading the Mac-formatted drive.

  • QuickTake 150 and Power mac G3 (beige mini tower)

hello there I have an apple QuickTake 150 but I don't have the software on the floppies. How ever I was able to download them. This is when I hit trouble. when I start to install the software it will select the proper stuff then it stops and says "there is a newer foriegn acces file is present. do you want to keep the newer one or install an older one" so I click newer. then it says "the plugin QuickTime power plug can't be replaced. the installation will stop" then it will ask me to insert floppy disk 2. but I don't have the disk. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME?!?!

"the plugin QuickTime power plug can't be replaced.
You have solved the problem of newer Vs older "Foreign File Access" ( a sub-extension of the Apple CD driver used to read ISO, High Sierra, PhotoCD, and other foreign file formats).
You have moved on -- to a clash in versions of QuickTime Extensions. The version of the "QuickTime Power Plug" extension is different from the one the Installer wants to Install. In addition, It is possible the extesnion on your Hard Drive is locked. To handle the error and Quit, it want to go back to diskette 2. If you can resolve the error, it is possible it will shut up about diskette 2.

  • Help Needed - Mac Pro tells me to restart during start up

A couple of weeks ago my pc froze and the screen went fuzzy with green and blue, so I held the power button down. Upon restart, I was told I needed to restart my pc again, and from there it started up fine and I had been using it up until now.
This time I can't get past the initial loading page with the Apple logo and grey screen, and the green / blue glitchyness has reappeared. I m still prompted to restart my pc, but so far, after several attempts, none have worked.
Any ideas? For the record, I don't know a whole lot about the technical side of my Mac.

  • Macbook Pro continually powers off during start up process.

My daughter's 13" MacBook Pro (late 2011 - MD313B/A) is not completing it's startup process and continually powers off approximately a 1/5th of the way along the startup "process bar".  Unfortunately, I can't obtain any further info regarding the Operating System etc but am assured that all Apple software is up-to-date.  Both basic and enhanced hardware diagnostic checks show no apparent problems.  Apparently, my daughter was downloading an original music CD to her collection last night when the system froze.  She forced a power shut off and are now unable to power the machine up. Unfortunately we are about 6 weeks outside the extended AppleCare Protection Plan period! Any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

First try SMC and NVRAM resets:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063
If there is no change, boot into the recovery partition.
From the 4 option menu select Disk Utility.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid,  Verify and Repair.
If the disk cannot be repaired, it will have to be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • Power Mac G5 Freezes only the First Time starting up

PowerMac G5 on StartUp freezes every FIRST time. Sometimes it chimes, most times it doesn't. Used the Hardware Test disk and it says RAM is OKAY. I have 4 1 gb chips that I have been using for 2 years without problems. I reset PMU, I zapped PRAM, NRAM, removed Airport card, used compressed air to clean the insides, reseated all RAM chips, repaired permissions - and nothing changes. I removed all peripherals and nothing changes. It always starts the 2nd time, so I can still use it. I need to know what is causing a First Startup freeze at the Grey screen, but again, 2nd start is good. I am a Recording Engineer with a ProTools HD rig, so I can't afford to take the computer out to repair, as I am in the middle of a Project. Just want to know if anyone has seen this issue before and dealt with it?

Very grateful for all of the replies! Disk Utility showed no errors, I replaced the battery last week, with a correct replacement. No problems with Clock/Date. RAM has been reseated. Airport Card removed, etc. I will put in some new RAM as soon as it arrives to see if that solves the issue - and I glad that someone echoed that software testing doesn't always show the whole picture. I cannot boot in Safe Mode. Does this help get closer to the root problem? It's confusing that it always works on the second boot and never the first boot. Even later in the day, it has the exact same issues. It gets to the grey screen spinning gear and freezes - every first boot, all the time. 2nd boot is flawless. That's what I don't understand. What problem goes away on the 2nd boot? Sounds like a Power issue of some sort, but I've never run into it. Also - Chime almost never occurs on startup - so I can't do the PRAM zap while waiting for 3 chimes, because I don't get any. Does this help describe the problem?

  • Power mac become stupidly slow after update from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8

Hey people. My Power mac takes on average 3mins 30 to start up after i updated from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8 . Before it took on average about 50secs to start up and get a application running. Are any of you experiencing this problem. I have only used 50gigs of space. I have done system recoverys and this still happens

i have checked. it will have the have the white screen where you see the apple logo and the loading cursor. That lasts about 40secs. Then it will it will show the loading bar. Thats lasts about 30secs. then it will show my desktop background image. It takes about 40secs to load my desktop items. then it will take about a min after that to show my username, time,Country flag,Volume control and my wireless icon in the top right hand corner. I have done 4 system restores, my recovery disks start at 10.4.4 it will work fine all the way up until 10.4.8. Is there a major bug in the upgrade or what?

  • Power Mac Won't Start Sometimes

I am running a power mac G4, lately when I try to start the computer, I push the power button on my display and the light comes on and the fan starts but nothing else, no chime or screen, I have reset the pmu/smu and checked the internal battery, it tested at 3.68 volts. I notice if the computer doesn't start, I turn it off by holding the power button in, then if I open and close the cover, the next time it starts. Help me please.

    Texas Mac Man wrote:
It still could be the battery. You need to test the voltage while installed or under some type of load.
Definitely.  Best way to test the battery (Apple Service Source method) is with battery in holder, computer off, AC disconnected.  Test battery voltage and replace if lower than 3.3 volts.
Have mentioned before that I have an 11-year-old Tadiran that still measures 3.69 volts open-circuit but drops to 0.28 volts with a 150 ohm load across it.

Is there a Red LED lit on the logic board?
If not then there is no 5V DC to start up.
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...
