Power Mac G3 with OS 8.6 nothing in right side of chooser

ok this is my problem today I came into work and the oldest computer in the place has a problem it runs OS 8.6 and uses a network printer to print. It also stores all of its info from the programs it runs on a network hard drive. here is the thing thats gone wrong. when the computer starts up it is set to connect to the network hard drive that works fine. but when i go to the chooser and try to select what printer i want to you on the network there is none nothing comes up in the right hand window for the chooser and i checked the apple talk in the chooser and none of the servers come up in the right hand side of the chooser as well even tho i am connected to them and they all have icons on the desktop. any ideas on how to fix this it is a computer that has to print off stuff or billing and i really need to get this up and running ASAP. any help would be great oh P.S. all the other computers can see the printers and servers this is the only one that will not print or anything thanks for all the help.

Did you try rebuilding the desktop on this Mac. Restart and hold down the cmd and opt keys. Tech Tool also has this feature if you have it.
Could also then run disk tools and see if it finds anything. If it wasn't for the fact that you can see and access network servers I would said your connection is bad.
Is the PRAM battery good? If not could be due for a change as well.
Is AppleTalk turned on?
Are the drivers for the printers loaded on this mac or are they on that network drive. Is the mac actually accessing it though I would have thought printer drivers would have been loaded on the Mac you are having issues with. If they aren't loaded on this mac can you and will this fix the problem or is that network drive the boot drive.
Sorry for all the questions but perhaps working down the list might find the issue as I can't definitely point to one in particular....

The Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, or similar software. For best results, place the second drive inside the computer or in a FireWire enclosure and boot the computer from it before removing the internal drive.

    Hello,
You need to put the Tiger Install Disc in the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 uMac into Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Boot the G4 holding the Option or alt key, hopefully the Install Disc in the 2011 iMac will show as a boot choice.
We just want to use the 2011 iMac as a big expensive FW Optical drive, it cannot be installed osing the 2011 iMac itself.

  • I recently upgraded to a G5 and Logic Pro 8. My previous system was a Power Mac 7200 with Logic Platinum 3.5.3. I can not open the old song files unless they are first saved in Logic 6 or 7. Where do I get a dongle for Logic 7?

eBay or Craigslist would be the only choice.

I have a Power Mac G5 with Mac OS 10.2.7 and can't seem to install Leopard 10.5.6. Every time i try to install it it either says that it can not validate the contents of the Base System package or could not validate the contents of the Xll User package. If i could get suggestions on what i can try to install Leopard on to my mac G5.

  • I have power mac g5 with OS X10.3.9 but i cannot upgrade to 10.4

I have a power mac G5 1.8ghz with 2.25GB of ram and 160GB HD. It works fine on 10.3.9 but unfortunately this is no good for me. I am trying to upfate to 10.4 but all this does is restart the computer back to the desktop.
All I am doing is double clicking the install icon on the disk and then pressing restart then entering my password. I have tried booting from thge disk but the same happens. I have also tried pressing the options key whilst its restarting and nothing happens
Im at my wits end as its useless to me without a modern OS.
I have also tried pressing the apple icon and going to software update but all it tells me is that everything is upto date.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks

What version of Tiger 10.4 are you attempting to use?
If it is a gray-label, it likely won't work, as those are specific
to a computer model originally intended; a restore-install disc.
Usually these have identifiers on them for their intended Mac.
What numbers are on the Tiger disc? What Mac is it for?
The clock battery or PRAM battery should be replaced every
few years as they do not charge up. They are one-way. This
powers the parameter random access memory chip, where
settings for system function are stored.
The computer could use retail install DVD Leopard OS X 10.5.
This would be the best way to upgrade the OS X, unless you
happen to have a workable way to install OS 9.2.2 to use it
as Classic, to run older applications under Tiger OS X 10.4.11.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • G4 Power Mac compatibility with new monitor

Have a G4 Power Mac with dual 1.25 processors and a Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card. What limits on flat panel monitors does this system have? 22", 24" or resolution?

What monitors work with a given graphics card is limited by the resolution the card will support. Size of the screen, as such, is irrelevant. The Radeon 9000 I believe supports up to 1920 by 1200 pixels via ADC or DVI and up to 2048 by 1536 via VGA (through a VGA extractor).

  • I have a power mac g4 with 10.3.9 can I upgrade to 10.4.11

I have been given a power mac g4 733mhz tower. It powers up and I can get around inside. I have no start up disk or anything else with it but the mouse and key board. Im afraid to sign out not having the passwords for the tower. Being that when it starts up with out having to log in will I be able to upgrade from 10.3.9 to 10.4.11? Is there anyway to get this tower reimaged so that I can set it up for my own use and have my passwords inplace? Thank you in advance for any help anyone can give me.

    Welcome To  Discussions Jon!
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
This is the correct one Mac OS X 10.4.6 Tiger, (DVD) Retail at FastMac.
    And at HardCore Mac.
Both are more expensive, than The Apple Store (U.S.).
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
    Tiger is on DVD.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, once Tiger 10.4.x is installed, you can use the PPC 10.4.11 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.

The Tiger Media Exchange Program, referred to, is no longer available.

  • Is my Power Mac G5 with 2 x GHz that cost nearly £2000 now finished.

My Power Mac G5 has 8Gb of ram with 2 x GHz processors and runs like a dream. I mainly use it to record music for Television. The man in the Mac shop told me I can't upgrade my system to Snow Leopard. That's not very good is it.
However I'm sure the kind people at Macintosh will respect the fact that there are many customers who bought PPC Macs not so long ago and don't plan on buying brand new replacements quite yet since they are still happy with their current machines.
Does anyone know whether Steven Jobs plans to allow us PPC users to upgrade to Mac's "Lion" OS next year?

I recall how a lot of service bureau systems stayed with OS 9 because "it works" and all their workflow and graphic design really didn't need all new software, hardware, etc.
Your G5 2.0DP came out in Oct 2003.
My SE/30 was a great buy in 1989 for $4100 too, but replaced that with Quadra 650 and then PM7100 and eventually some G3s and G4.
People with Snow Loepard complain about how it is a memory hog, sluggish, Safari 5 doesnt' run well, issues with Java, Flash and more.
You could pick up an iMac from Apple Store Specials next year after Lion has been out and had time to iron it out.
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/imac
Lion sounds like a lot of... consumer mobile support for pads, phones, and all these new fangled gadgets and new interface. Give it a year or two to mature. I still don't see that the path from Tiger to Leopard and on to Snow Leopard were more than some service packs and optimizing the kernel to be able to boot 64-bit kernel (like Vista 4 yrs ago).
