Power Mac G4 (867) Upgrade - DP or SP? And more RAM?

I only want to do this once, and would like to get it right first time.
Because price is an object. (I'd love to get a G5, but it's out of the question).
So if you can spare the time to offer some advise I'd be most grateful.
I have a PowerMac G4 867 (Quicksilver) with 1.12Gb SDRAM currently running OS 10.5.2.
(And it runs quiet well, but needs a little bit more "grunt").
Model Name: Power Mac G4
Model Identifier: PowerMac3,5
Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
Processor Speed: 867 MHz
Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
Memory: 1.12 GB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.2.5f1
I'm considering either a:
*FastMac Motorola G4 7455 @ 1.53 Ghz Single Processor* (Model: APP-6216)
or a:
*FastMac Motorola G4 7455 @ 1.4 Ghz Dual Processor* (Model: APP-6280).
(I've checked and my 867 will accept a dual upgrade).
There's a price difference of US$150.00 or AUD$164.95 between the 2 options.
+The specs for the 1.53 says that it "Operates @1.5Ghz on a 100Mhz System Bus".+
+Would having a 133 Mhz Bus mean it operates better?+
As I understand it a dual processor is only really benefical if the software you're using is designed to take advantage of two processors, otherwise it just uses the one. So is there an advantage in a dual processor if you don't know wether the software you're using uses 2 processors? Is there a way to tell what software is dual compatiable?
As the price difference between the two options isn't too bad, (for me at this time at least), should I opt for the slightly faster single 1.53 or go for the dual 1.4? I know it's "one of those questions", where the answer depends on many factors, but generally speaking?
And after some research it appears the most RAM I get install in my dear old G4 867 is approx 1.5Gb. And updating one slot will give me that. Is it possible to add any more? Is there an expansion option that I'm not aware of?
That's it.
Positive feedback most welcome.
And *Many Thanks* in advance.

Hi-
Hello, and many thanks for taking the time to reply.
If you are going to use any photo, video, or audio editing software, get the dual processor upgrade. The OS also uses the dual processors. Any amount of multi-tasking will also benefit from multi processors.
Yes, I do a fair amount of photo, video and audio editing and rendering. Often I'll have more than one prgram running at once. eg: I'll have MPEG Streamclip converting an MPEG2 to a MOV file while editing in FCP or burning a DVD.
The RAM slots are as they are, and no mods are available. 1.5gb is max.
Such is life. Still I have "MenuMeters" installed, allowing me to monitor RAM usage, and I'm yet to see it all being used, even when the CPU usage goes to 100%. (Which is happening more often nowadays, thus the need for an upgrade.
If you are interested, for the same money as the dual, you can get a single 7448 based 2.0ghz processor upgrade. The duals will run about as fast as a single 1.8ghz, but the biggest advantage is to reduce the power demands and the heat produced. The 7455 processors, though very good, do produce more heat, and draw more power, than a 7447 or 7448 processor upgrade.
The other aspect of the 7448 that makes it attractive, is a 1mb L2 cache. Though no L3, the proximity of the large L2 cache makes for a faster processor than the 7447, or even 7455.
I was thinking it might be better to stay with the 7455, especially when going dual.
Does it matter if I change the model of the processor? I was under the impression is was better to stay with the original model type. eg 7455.
That said, the FastMac processors are good upgrades.
The 2Ghz is VERY tempting! But given that I'm doing more video and audio work, (at the same time), it seems the dual 1.4 is the better option. Or is it? Decisions, decisions.
Many Thanks. Jay.

I had an older version of Mac OS, I upgraded to Snow leopard and then OSx Lion, most of my software has been upgraded except for Imovie.  Now I can't get my projects to upload or share to iDVD or iTunes.   Also to compound the situation everytime I attempt to share to iDVD or iTunes, iMovie quits unexpectedly.    What do I do?

If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.

  • Power Mac G4 having video problems -green dots and pixelated lines

Yesterday my Power Mac G4 running OS X (10.5.1) started having unusual video problems. I started to notice green dots on the screen where the mouse pointer had been or where application windows had recently been. The severity of the video symptoms seem to vary - from a cluster of green pixels to slight amount of fuzz in text.
I'm thinking that this is a symptom of a problem with the video card starting to fail but I haven't ruled out the Apple Studio Display either. While the Mac was still under Apple Care support, I did have the video card replaced a few years ago due to symptoms that were much more severe than this.
Should I get a new video card? Could it be the display at fault? How expensive would it be to take it in to the local Apple store for diagnosis/repair?

  • CPU upgrades, RAIDing system drive, and more

Final Cut Studio user... editing on an iMac is murder... need more power Scotti! I intend to buy a Mac Pro next week, either BTO or retail, not sure yet!
I know that CPUs on Mac Pro's are socketed and not soldered. Yipee! Is it confirmed that CPUs are truly upgradable? My usual Mac vendor wasn't convinced.
I know it's possible to RAID 0 or 1 data drives, but is it possible to RAID 0 the system drive? I was thinking about getting a couple of Raptor drives for a performance increase. Also I imagine that the current BootCamp won't be able to manage that.
Speaking of Bootcamp, can Windows be on another drive other then on a partition of the system drive?
My same Mac vendor seemed to think that Bluetooth and AirPort are only BTO and not upgradable (even from a certified repair center). But I see posts that say otherwise. What's the concensus on this?
Will be using existing CRTs off my old PC for now. I assume that any standard DVI-VGA adaptor will do? Or are there variations in those adaptors that I need to be aware of?
    iMac G5 20, 1.8GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Is it confirmed that CPUs are truly upgradable?
Given the socket nature it's potentially possible. Until there's are actually chips out there to actually try it no-one really knows if it's possible or even worthwhile.
but is it possible to RAID 0 the system drive?
    Yes.
Speaking of Bootcamp, can Windows be on another drive other then on a partition of the system drive?
    Yes… any internal drive.
My same Mac vendor seemed to think that Bluetooth and AirPort are only BTO and not upgradable
Yes they are upgradeable after purchase but is a service centre job. While it is probably possible to do the job yourself you would still need to source the part.
I assume that any standard DVI-VGA adaptor will do?
Yes, the Mac comes with at least one DVI to VGA adapter.

  • Upgrading from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8  on my G4 Power Mac Digital audio-is it worth it and how do i find the 10.5.8

Hey Gang.   How's it been going?  I still have the same G4 Digital Audio which came used but with a clean OS, which I managed to up
grade to reach the 10.4.11.  Its works great and I love it.  I can only imagine using a real Mac Pro 2012.  The software is legacy and It will not support the QuarkExpress9 for example.  So what if I found and upgraded to the 10.5.8 or the max OS my G4 can handle?  Is it worth it?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Depends what part of 10.5 you think you need, but 10.5 does not support Classic Apps, requires 3 times the resources & space, is expensive, & slower than Tiger/10.4 even on a G5 Quad with 10 GB of RAM.
    I have run 10.5.8 on a DA/450 MHz/1GB, & it is possible.
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

You need to reset the external image editor in iPhoto's Advanced preference pane to the right version. I assume there's an Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 folder in your Applications folder.  This screenshot is for PSE 10 but would be the same for 12:

  • ?Best OS X version for Power Mac Cube G4-I want to reformat and start again in the hope it will work faster.

Hi. I want to reformat and start again in the hope my G4 PowerMac Cube will work faster. So I'd like to know what the best version of Mac OS X is for the G4. Can anyone advise?  Many thanks.

Hi, the best for speed is the lowest OSX it'll run & still do what you need.
10.1.5 would run in 96MB of RAM, 10.2.x took twice as much, 10.3.x twice again, 10.4.x twice again, 10.5.x thrice again & better Video caards.
And those are minimums, twice that being fairly useful, 4 times that being pretty good.
I suspect 10.4.11 is going to be your "Sweet Spot", I wouldn't run 10.4 on PPC Macs with less than 1.5 GB of RAM, not on IntelMacs with less than 3-4GB of RAM.
OSX is very dependent on it's spped & usability by the speed & amount of free space on the HD.
So we know more about it...

  • I have a power mac g3 it boots fine but mouse and key board do not work

The mac boots fine, I can see desk top, etc. The key board and mouse are connected but do not appear to work.  This has just happened.

You could take it to a service center but: 1) It would probably cost more than the computer is worth. 2) You'd be lucky to find somebody who knows what a G4 is (maybe I exaggerate but really, they would laiugh at anything that "old"). 3) I don't think we're done here.
Do you still have the original discs. One of them has a hardware test that you can run.  You could also see
if it boots to the original disc and if things still won't work.  You could even try OS9.
Also look into CUDA reset and NVRAM reset.  I think they are both references in the link I provided earlier.

If it really turns out to be the USB hardware that's bad you could probably find a third party USB card you could slip in there for next to nothing and would also give you USB2 speeds.  There's minor disadvantages.
Oh, did we determine if it really isn't working at any stage?  What about if you hold down the mouse key while booting the computer? That should open the optical drive door if it is being sensed.

  • Why do character styles disappear after an upgrade to RH9? And more...

I am trying out version 3 of the technical communication suite and have developed a few concerns about RoboHelp 9. I'm wondering if anyone has feedback on the following:
After opening a version 7 project in RoboHelp 9, I noticed that all of my custom character styles are gone. They are not listed in the "style" pane (when the drop-down is set to either "Character Styles" or "Paragraph and Character Styles"), and the text itself does not look correct. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I checked the RH9 release notes, and the three known issues listed have nothing to do with character styles.
On a broader note, I read elsewhere in this forum that upgrading from RH version 7 to either 8 or 9 can be painful. Does anyone know whether Adobe (or anyone else) has a list of upgrade warnings, or a list of proposed solutions for making the upgrade process go more smoothly? I'm not seeing anything in the official Adobe documentation, though I could be missing it.
Also, if anyone has an opinion on whether the  FrameMaker-RoboHelp integration is better in version 3 of technical communications suite (compared with  version 1, which is I am), I would be interested in hearing your reactions. After a first pass, the only part of the version 3 suite I'm really impressed with is the new Acrobat.
    thanks,
    Abby

If you would like to create a new project and set up a topic with your CSS in it, I will take a look at it. How to send it is described on the Contact page on my site.
The most common issue with upgrading to 8 was lists. You can read about that on my site. Look under RoboHelp > Lists.
With 8 the big issue was a bug that will not affect you in 9. The project lost track of files.
I cannot help you on the FM integration and suggest you post a separate question on that aspect at http://forums.adobe.com/community/robohelp/robohelp_framemaker

I'm running Pro Tools|HD 7.4 in a 10.4.9 environment on a Power Mac G5 dual 2.3 GHz (The last Power Mac G5 ever released before Intel) with 4.5GB Ram and I was wondering if the upgrade to 10.5.4 would bring on better performance and stability or if I should stick with 10.4.9. Theres nothing wrong with my current configuration but if anyone thinks 10.5.4 would run better/smoother than 10.4.9 I think I would upgrade.

Leopard is definitely a better choice than Tiger. However, before upgrading, get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire), and make a bootable backup/clone of your current Tiger installation before upgrading and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. See these for details:

  • Upgrading an early 2005 G5 Power Mac - memory & HD - your hindsight appreci

Hello, I have an early 2005 G5 Power Mac, dual 2.3 Ghz, 2GB memory, and a 400GB Hitachi Drive.
In researching memory and hard drives, I come face to face with all the engineering terms and now have cold feet about it.
My existing memory is called: PC3200U-30330 DDR SRAM. I found a Samsung module on the web called a PC3200 DDR400 for $61 but the vendor won't confirm compatibility. Can anyone recommend a competitively priced substitute for the expensive Apple part? Is there a rule of thumb on knowing how much is too much or should I just buy 6 additional 1GB modules and have done with it.
I have one HD. I assume it is a SATA-1. I'd like to buy a 500mb 2nd drive. I have read the SATA-2 drives are backward compatible; are they? How should the jumper on the new drive be set: cable select??
Finally, are there any performance suggestions anyone could mention for me to look into? I am editing music files in the 10 to 75mb range, cutting and re-constructing movie clips in the 4.7 gb range.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions,
    Sam
M978xx/A wATI-Radeon9650XT   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   I am an IBM compatible user converting to Apple

    Hi,
the RAM compatible with your computer you can find here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=219&type=Memory&TI=1906&shoup grds=Show+Upgrades
And also on other Mac's sites like Crucial, Omni Technologies
I would be very careful with PC's RAM - some of them can work with Mac, but some don't.
Hard disk SATA-2 is backward compatible, so you can buy for example Maxtor MaxLine Pro 500 GB:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Maxtor/7H500F0/
    or WD RE2 500 GB:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD5000YS/
    or Hitachi:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/0A31619/
I think that you don't need more then the next 2GB of RAM. In fact, if you editing music - your current 2GB seems to be fine. But always 4 GB is better then 2 GB
And performance suggestion in this case is faster processor - so, you can buy used Quad G5, or better MacPro 3.0 with 2 GB RAM.
    Marek.
