Power mac g4 Agp ''sawtooth'' wont install 10.4.11

hi
i have a power mac g4 (AGP 400 mhz)
i boot into the 10.4 install dvd about 1/5 th into the install it says please try installing agian.
when i restart without the disk in it shows the flashing no os floder.about 5 seconds after that it shows the white screen with the can't boot icon.
it has no os's onit and i plan to dual boot 10.4 and linux.
thanks.
also im not going to buying a new mac unless its dead because i love it! + im broke if its dead my budget is £75

Has this Mac ever had OS X installed? If not, it needs a firmware update prior to installing OS X.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1395 The firmware update is installed while booted into OS 9.
Is your install DVD black or gray? A black installer is a retail version that you need. A gray installer is Mac model  specific & will only work on the Mac that it came with.
 Cheers, Tom
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

  • Power Mac G4 AGP (Sawtooth) - PSU cable not working, all the time

    Power Mac G4 Friends
P1 is connected to the motherboard and working.
P2 and P3 are connected to hard drives and working.
P4 is connected to a hard drive and working.
P6 is connected to optical and Zip drives and working.
    P5 may not be working.
It was recently that I observed the length of P5. P5 is actually long enough to power an AGP 2x, 4x, ATI or GeForce, 12.v power supply connection required, graphics card.
Formally, I used P5 to power the hard drive in the front drive bay. For years no problem occurred. Suddenly, on occasion, the hard drive would not boot. When I connected the hard drive to P4, the problem was solved.
    Questions
Since P5's length extends to the AGP slot, should P5 only be used for an AGP, power supply required, graphics card?
Is it possible for one PSU cable to not work?
    Is the P5 cable broken?
Can the P5 cable be replaced?
    Thank you

Hello, no idea if this helps, but...
You can convert an ATX PSU for use on a G4...

plunked down WAY TOO MUCH on upgrades to Beige/Yosemite/MDD over the years, enough that "penny wise, pound foolish" I could have had Starbucks instead and gotten a new Mac.
    Hello Hatter, you wrote:
I don't like to work on a system that pegs cpu @ 100%, I want it to run smooth and graceful. I don't need $5000 to get there. And you can have a LOT of fun upgrading Mac Pro and gradually add what you want to. And if you are adventurous... get yrs out of it in the process.
Software and OS upgrades have always helped market new hardware.
Number one: I don't come anywhere near 100 percent cpu usage at all when I am using my MDD. Though, I don't use Apple's complex software, once in a blue moon I will burn DVD's or CD's, but this is fast enough for me.
Secondly: You have owned an MDD far longer than I have. I just recently got this MDD which is a 2003 dual 1.25 - the VERY VERY last one before the G5 came out. I am happy with this machine as it is doing everything that my digital audio did, but faster. I don't need windows, though if emulation of TI-99/4A, MAME, and MESS become a problem, I might consider a MAC MINI alongside my MDD. I am in no way shape of form going to get rid of the G4. Plus, I have so much fun with the powerpc processor and its capabilities. I know, the bus speed is 167, but consider this. I came from a digital audio to this MDD and it only cost me 400 dollars on craigslist. The condition:
Brand spanking new! The owner told me he had never had any problems with it. No over heating problems, nothing! The only problem I had with it was a bad front panel board - but thats all in the past.
True, I personally wouldn't plunk down any more money as far as CPU upgrades go since the 1.8 and 1.6 duals don't offer L3 cache. If anything, I would get at low price a 1.42 board to put in this machine and make it dual 1.42, though 10 percent increase is really miniscule.
Which brings me to the next point - of course, upgrading a Beige, Yosemite was a waste of money because for what those systems were worth they ran on a G3 processor. But, we are talking about a dual 1.25/1.42 MDD, not G3.
I do like the Intel macs, though from what you heard about me spewing hatred towards them and the architecture, I was just plainly upset that day for no reason and decided to take it out on others. For that, I am deeply sorry. However, I plan to get a Mac intel mini to be networked alongside my MDD. I just realized that really for what I use my MAC for, I wouldn't need a mac pro or anything remotely expensive, given right now that I am just starting a new job in a few weeks.
Finally, I am still at odds of whether to upgrade to Leopard, since most of my software is all tiger oriented. I originally had Panther 2 years ago and I was hesitant about going to Tiger, but I did and I am glad I did since I see the performance it is giving me.
So, the MDD is not a bad machine and really isn't as slow as one would think - at least for what I use my system for. Explain to me why you are getting 100 percent cpu on yours?

  • I HAVE A POWER MAC G5 AND IT WONT POWER UP.

I have a Power Mac G5 (late 2005).  It will not power up.I Have already replaced the PRAM battery and tried hitting the SMU button.  Nothing.

Pull the plug from the wall receptacle (the wall receptacle works, right?).
Press the power button (This is to drain builtup charge).
Replug the power cord to the wall receptacle.
    Do you hear any clicks?
Press the power button. Still dead?
If you hear two clicks after reconnecting power, the PSU is likely dead.
Using a volt ohm meter (multimeter) you can test the PSU:

  • Power mac won't reboot after installing OS 10.8

I installed an online copy of OS 10.8 I bought from Apple and now my 5 month-old Quad Core Mac Pro will not boot up. It keeps cycling through start-up then shutting down. I was able to do a safe start by holding the SHIFT key where I was able to update my NVIDIA Graphics Quadra 4800 card with the latest 10.7 software. When I tried to download their latest 10.8 "safe" software it would finish the download. Now I can't start the computer holding the SHIFT key.

It didn't help. I have an NVIDIA quadro 4800 Graphics Card installed and I was able to download the latest update in 10.7.4, but 10.8 doesn't allow me to install the update that, bTW, says works with 10.8. Now my Mac Pro doesn't see the graphics card and I can't use FCP or Resolve. Here's the problem log:

  • Office mac 2011 dmg file wont install

Hey, we brought our first mac the other day so are not too familiar with it, i need microsoft office for work purposes so we purchased it downloaded the file which is X18-08827.dmg  it is refusing to open and start installing and when double clicked comes up with a box saying "following disk images couldnt be opened"  "reason -  not recognised"
I have tried going to the security settings and allowing all programs to be opened but this has still brought no joy
Hope someone can be of assistance
    Many Thanks

Simply re-download it from Microsoft's website. If  it doesn't install then the issue is probably a Microsoft issue. You can locate the download at:

  • MAC OS 9.1 wont install on my imac

i have an imac (summer 2000) edition; mac os 9.0.4 and i am tring to update it but the last step before it can install it says,"MAC OS 9.1 must be installed from the CD when the Language Kit files are already installed."

Here is, maybe, the solution. I did it and it works. But, I have original Jaguar disk. So, you have to go to the page and to download standalone version of Recovery CD. Install it. After successful instalation, insert disk with Jaguar and follow instructions. You will get Classic Support on Mac 10.4.9! It does work like a dream!
Read first this article and try it!

  • AGP SAWTOOTH wont see more than 896mb RAM

It wont see more than 896mb of RAM in any combination of the 4 slots. And whats more, if I put four 256mb chips in, it will only see 512mb. So I currently have 3x256 and 1x128...
This is true with OS 9.1, 10.3 and 10.4...
    Any ideas? thx

Hello! Have you checked to see if all the ram is the same spec. i have 4 512 meg pc133 sticks in my Sawtooth and it shows 2 gig of ram. OS 9 will only recognize 1.5 gigs as I understand it. I think that OSX has the ability to "lock out" portions of memory that may be out of spec. Tom

  • Power Mac G4 (AGP) Problems booting up.

When I turn on my Mac it starts normally but when it gets to the apple logo screen it stays there for about 5 minutes then transitions into a blue screen where I can see my mouse in the upper left hand corner but not move it. My Mac never gets past the blue screen. I'm new to Macs, so any input would be helpful.
    Thanks,

    Hi-
Try starting in Safe Mode. Hold the Shift key while starting. If successfully booted to Safe mode, restart, and the machine should start normally.
If not, there are possible Startup or Login item problems.
    Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items
The startup problem could also be caused by directory problems on the hard drive. Boot to the OS X install disc (hold C while starting) and open Disk Utility in the Menu bar in the pane after the language selection pane. In Disk Utility, select your Startup drive, and select "Repair Disk".

  • New HD and Partitioning with Power Mac G4 AGP (400)

I have not found anyone mentioning the ability to boot in either OSX or OS9 after upgrading a hard drive.
I want to keep that option for awhile longer, but it is necessary to have more than a mere 10G HD.
Before I purchase a new drive, I would like to know if there are any issues regarding the choice to boot in either OS following the upgrade. I am sorry if it is a silly question, but I don't understand what makes this possible in the first place...
Thanks to this forum, I have at least already figured out what HDs are my best choices.... Thanks for the help

Hello! Upgrading your hard drive a has nothing to do with booting into an OS. If your computer can boot into OS9 now it can do it after an upgrade. If you have a 10 gig or so drive running OS9 and you want to go to X I'd suggest that you leave the OS9 drive as is and but a new 120 gig 7200 rpm drive as a secondary drive and put the OSX OS on it. If the machine is currently running OS9 then you'll likely have to do a firmware upgrade before installing OSX on the G-4. You'll have to be booted into OS9 to do the firmware upgrade. Leaving the current drive you have now as OS9 will give you the ability to run in OS9 if need be. Your machine will only see a 120 gig drive without adding another pci card so I wouldn't buy anything larger. As for partitioning think of it as a filing cabinet with two drawers. Each drawer is separate from the other but it's still one cabinet. The hard drive can be "partitioned" into two drawers or "volumes" to be kept totally separate from each other. And by the way adding another gig or so of ram and a 1.2 ghz or faster processor will have the old G-4 smokin' once again. Tom

  • Power Mac G4 (sawtooth) AGP - Firmware and other issues

    Hello,
So I was given an older Power Mac G4 AGP which I've been using while my Power Book G4 gets a logic board replacement but I've been having some issues with the AGP unit. How do you check to see what version of the firmware you have? I read a firmware update but it requires OS 9 to launch and I don't know if I need this or not. The other issue has been when I tried to run Firefox after successfully installing it. Firefox doesn't launch, it just opens and then closes. When I use Safari, the browser will work for about a few minutes but then it will freeze and I need to force quit it. I am running 10.4.11 and I was thinking of installing 10.5.6 but I'm not sure if this is possible with the Sawtooth. Do I need to upgrade the processor? Any advice or help is appreciated.

    Hi, veesh678 -
Early models of the G4 (AGP) models came with OS 8.6; later models came with an installer for a model-specific version of OS 9.0.4. The latter disk will have a blue-gray label, be named "Power Mac G4" with a subtitle "Software Install", and has a part number of 691-2657-A (the part number will be in fine print on the right-hand side of the label).
Non-current firmware will not preclude the machine from booting to that CD; a retail OS 9.0.4 Install CD (white label, gold 9, no model named) probably will not work, although a retail OS 9.1 or 9.2.1 Install CD should work fine.
The current firmware version for the G4 (AGP) model is v. 4.2.8, which can be downloaded from this article -
    Article #120068 - G4 Firmware Update 4.2.8
Note that to install that version the machine must be booted to OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.x from its hard drive, and the firmware update must be run from the same hard drive.
Before installing firmware update v. 4.2.8, download and run DIMM First Aid (it's a free download) to verify the compliance of the RAM in the machine.

  • Install MAC OS 10.4 (Tiger) on Power MAC G4

I have a power MAC G4 and I've installed MAC OS 10.1 and it's working properly. I'm trying to install the MAC OS 10.4 (Tiger) but I'm getting during the installation an alert "this software can't be installed on this machine".
Please advise if I need to install Firmware before and if yes, which version and it's link.
    Thanks and regards,
    Charbel

    Hi cljma,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
you cannot directly upgrade from 10.1.x to 10.4.x (direct upgrade is only recommended for 10.2.x and 10.3.x). You have to do an Erase&Install. Also be aware that you cannot use hardware specific disks that shipped with another computer.
And yes, most likely you do need a firmware upgrade (depending on the exact model of G4 you have): Firmware Upgrades
I suggest you get the retail full install version of Tiger, boot from it, reformat the drive and start the installation from scratch. Do not forget to make a complete backup of all your documents and applications!
If this answered your question please consider granting some stars: Why reward points?

  • Best AGP graphics card for 1st gen Power Mac G5?

    I have a dual 2Ghz 1st generation Power Mac G5 (AGP Graphics).
I currently have the ATI Radeon 9800 PRO SE 256mb, but in my view it's not fast enough for sane Aperture use.
What do you recommend? I was looking at the ATI 800 XT, but surely there are newer and better ones.
Also, Is there a 850 XT onsale or was it only ever 'build to order'? I can't find it on ATI's website, they only have the 800 XT.
    Thanks

The 800xt is available from the apple store and I believe from ATI directly. Surf on over to barefeats.com and check out their performance tests on core image functions and various video cards, the 800 holds its own even with newer cards like the nvidia 7800 available as a bto in the newer G5's. The reason I believe that the 800xt is the end of the road for us AGP G5 owners is that even if we modded a newer card to work (as some out there are doing) there is a limit on the throughput, and the extra capacity goes unused. Getting the 800xt will get you through to the next generation of Powermacs-guess they will drop the power part-perhaps MacTowers-where PCI express will open up the options to whatever the PC community is putting out, with the exception of driver support I guess. But the 800 is good enough combined with 2 or more gigs of memory, and perhaps at somepoint, you might consider a RAID solution if you want to squeeze another year or so out without upgrading.

  • Power Mac g4 freezes up when put in sleep mode

Hello. So the machine has had a lot of changes but the problem just started a couple days ago, before that I was going into sleep mode just fine with no problems. The problem is when the computer goes to sleep it freezes, the screen goes black but the fan and hard drive are still going and the light never turns to the flashing amber. What's more I'm unable to wake it up or use the keyboard restart command. The only way to restart or shutdown are the buttons on the tower. So I've turned power saver off and now have just resorted to shutting down when it's not in use but that's pretty bad in the long run.
Any ideas on what may have started causing this? Like I said it's beem working perfectly for a while now.

Did you install a USB 2.0 PCI card and do you leave bus-powered devices connected to it, when the computer goes into sleep mode? There have been many reported sleep issues associated with USB 2.0 cards in the G4s. What name is printed on the main controller chip (sometimes it's hidden by the card manufacturer's label)? The consensus of opinion is that USB 2.0 cards with an NEC chip tend to have fewer problems. Additionally, it's a good practice to disconnect the bus-powered devices from the card, prior to letting the computer go into sleep mode.

  • Expanding Your Power Mac G4?

    Hi,
I have a Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics)with 385 mgs of RAM. I am currently using the operating system that came with it 9.04, I believe, and am about to purchase Tiger.
My question is....what kind of upgrades can be made to this G4 model, and what is worth doing to it in the future. (I cannot really afford anything at the moment as I will be purchasing the OS X plus a second internal HD) For future reference......would my money be best saved toward ultimately purchasing a newer model computer, rather than spending money to upgrade this one?
I use it for personal and graphic design work, (although not really involved things like video or fancy web stuff.)
Also....any ideas what I should purchase for a second (internal HD?)
    Thanks!

    Hey there!
    Well first thing first;
1.Ensure you have updated your G4's firmware, this can be done by clicking on software update in the control panel. if a firmware update pops up,select it and follow the instructions exactly as is said. This will will improve the systems Firewire compatability and a few minor things. Its also needed if you intend to replace the old CPU with an upgrade card.
2.Upgrade your ram,you should have at least 512MB of ram installed, anything below this will just make your mac run slowly. I would recommend buying a Crucial Mac 512MB stick at £66 (not sure what it is in $), you could use your exsisting ram chips,as long as they match the CL (2/3). if they don't match, system stability and performance may be hinderd. If you bought 512MB of ram, you would end up with a total of 897MB of ram, which should be ok for now,
3.my personal choice for a HD is SeaGate always, great performance and reliability. Quiet and solid performers, better than any other brand i've used yet. A 120GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 8MB Buffer ATA100 will set you back £60. The G4 AGP can only cope with hard drives up to 128GBs,the only relaible way to overide this would be to buy a PCI ATA card like sonnets ATA133 card, which will allow you to install larger size hard drives and benefit from the full ATA133 interface as to the standard ATA66.
By this point your ready to go,and install tiger.
4.Id reccommend a better graphics card as well,as that old Rage 128 Pro is showing it's age badly. The best graphics card for the AGP model is the Radeon 8500 Mac Edition. its fast and has a decent amount of onboard ram. And its Quark Extreme compatible, whcih is part of the OS X interface and software exstensions. They are very rare to get hold of now but if you can get one off ebay, nab it before it goes. They tend to go for £60/£80.OS X tiger will work happy with the old rage card in,but it would benefit greatly to have a better GC.
5.At a latter date,id reccomend a Sonnet Encore/ST G4 1.4Ghz CPU upgrade, they cost about £260. There the fastest performing CPU'S for the agp,as the 2MB L3 Cahce makes up for the 100Mhz FSB. Faster than 1.8Ghz upgrade,as they lack the L3 cache which makes a great deal of difference
Hope that wasn't too confusing for you,Autism doesn't make it easy for me to explain things in great detail. Anything your unsure off, leave us a message and i'll reply ASAP
